Data on corresponding solid–liquid equilibrium of erythritol in methanol, ethanol and methanol + ethanol was measured with temperature range from 283.15 K to 333.15 K under atmospheric pressure by employing the gravimetric method. The experimental results indicated that the solubility of erythritol in the solvents increases with increasing both temperature and mass fraction of organic solvents. The experimental data were well-correlated with the modified Apelblat equation, the λh equation and the van’t Hoff equation. In addition, the calculated solubilities showed good agreement with the experimental results. It was found that the modified Apelblat equation could obtain the better correlation results than the other two models. The standard enthalpy, standard entropy, and Gibbs free energy change of solution of erythritol were calculated from the solubility data by using the modified Apelblat model and the van’t Hoff equation. What's more, the experimental data and model parameters would be useful for optimizing the process of purification of erythritol in industry.

High energy composite films made from high explosives has important applications in pyrotechnics. In this study, electrostatic spraying was used to prepare energy-containing films based on 1,2,3,4-butanetetrol tetranitrate (ETN). The results show that all energy containing films are made of nanofibres. They have excellent hydrophobicity and combustion properties. In particular, monolayer films in which ETN is the main energy containing substance. Once ignited, the trace monolayer film generates a maximum pressure of 0.85 MPa and an adiabatic flame temperature of 2,855 °C. For single and double layer films, the heat of combustion can reach 9899 J/g and 11975 J/g respectively. The level of combustion heat can also be controlled by adjustment of the ETN content. The results of the thermo-properties performance evaluation show that by optimizing the nanostructure, the ETN-based energy-containing fiber membranes can meet the requirements of advanced pyrotechnic products. In particular, there is great potential in the metastable intermixed composites (MICs) field.

This study elucidates an attempt to develop a stable and efficient composite phase change material for mid-temperature solar thermal storage by incorporating erythritol (Ery) into a designed 3D porous carbon foam/carbon aerogel (CF/CA) scaffold. This work aims to tackle the challenge of significant supercooling, volume expansion, and liquid leakage associated with pure Ery. The Ery@ CF/CA Composite was synthesized via vacuum melting impregnation, using Ery loadings up to 79 wt% supported by the CF/CA scaffold. The optimal composite showed a dense structure with a melting point of 118.9 °C and a high latent heat of 272.4 J/g (for 79 wt.% Ery). Meanwhile, its thermal conductivity remained low at 0.939 W/(m·K) at 25 °C. After 5 cycles, the material showed no leakage or distortion, retained >90% of its enthalpy, and achieved a 26.98% reduction in supercooling. The improved thermal storage capacity and structural stability are attributed to the combined effect of the insulating carbon network and the high latent heat Ery. The findings provide the role of 3D carbon scaffold in stabilizing phase change materials and offer a promising materials strategy that can meet the future demand for efficient and reliable mid-temperature solar thermal storage systems.

The supercooling effect is deemed to be a crucial issue for thermal energy storage using phase change materials (PCMs). The exploration of promising additives plays a decisive role in effective suppression efforts for suppressing the supercooling effect of a PCM. The present work proposed a potential additive, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), to reduce the supercooling of erythritol, which is the most promising polyol PCM candidate for medium temperature range. PVP with various loadings was dispersed in erythritol to make composites for the proof-of-concept tests. It was shown that the degree of supercooling of erythritol can be reduced significantly from over 64 °C to about 21 °C in the presence of only 1.0 wt.% PVP. Along with the mitigated supercooling effect, the addition of PVP also leads to an increase of the retrievable latent heat during crystallization, from ∼187 J/g to ∼224 J/g at the same minute PVP loading of 1.0 wt.%, by increasing the crystallinity of erythritol. The PVP-loaded erythritol composites exhibit little sacrifice in latent heat of fusion, i.e., only ∼15% loss when the PVP loading reaches 6.0 wt.%. In addition, multiple tests confirmed that PVP can be dissolved in erythritol, thus desirable compatibility was obtained and the composites would have long-term reliability. This proposed additive enables an efficient and cost-effective way for improving the crystallization behaviors of erythritol (and other polyol PCMs) towards real-world applications.

The serious supercooling of erythritol (ET) limits its application in the field of mid-temperature thermal energy storage (TES), especially in the recently developed form-stable phase change materials (PCMs). The primary purpose of this paper is to find out the factors to mitigate the supercooling of ET/expanded graphite (EG) form-stable composite PCM and obtain the correlation among the morphology, kinetic parameters, and a supercooling degree in the non-isothermal crystallization process. Firstly, five types of supercooling relaxation agents (nano-Al 2 O 3 , nano-SiO 2 , CMC, urea, and citric acid) were added to prepare the ET/EG form-stable CPCMs. Among them, the ET/EG/nano-Al 2 O 3 exhibited excellent form-stable ability, a high heat release ratio of 78.9%, and the lowest supercooling degree (Δ T ) of 45.7 °C. Based on the chosen ET/EG/nano-Al 2 O 3 CPCM, the tablet pressures from 1 to 13 MPa were applied, obtaining lowest Δ T decreased by 59.0% in 1 MPa. Moreover, the non-isothermal crystallization processes were discussed on the ET/EG/nano-Al 2 O 3 with the Avrami equation modified by Jeziorny. ET tended to grow spherulites under the high cooling rate of 18 °C/min with triggering as the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami exponent n increased to 4.22. Meanwhile, the supercooling degree increased from 48.8 to 56 °C with the cooling rate growing from 2 to 18 °C/min. And the activity energy Δ E of the ET/EG/nano-Al 2 O 3 CPCM (7092.35 kJ/mol) was smaller than that of the ET/EG CPCM (8211.19 kJ/mol) because of the interaction between the heterogeneous nucleation effect and blocker effect of nano-Al 2 O 3 .

The thermal contact resistance (TCR) between the interfaces of phase change materials (PCMs) and their encapsulation materials, usually thin-walled metals, have a great impact on the heat storage/retrieval rates of PCM-based latent heat storage (LHS) systems. However, the TCR data beteween metal/PCM interfaces are rarely reported in the literature. In this work, an improved self-designed steady-state apparatus was adopted to measure the TCR between the interfaces of erythritol, a cost-effective sugar alcohol with great potential for medium-temperature LHS, and multiple metals including SS304, nickel silver (a copper-nickel-zinc ternary alloy), and 1060 Al. The metal/erythritol composites were prepared by naturally solidifying molten erythritol on the surface of thin metal plates. The variation of the TCR between metal/erythritol interfaces was measured as a function of the surface roughness (of the metal plates) and the contact pressure applied (between the interfaces). With the decrease of surface roughness, the TCR also decreases due to the better contact between the interfaces as observed by a microscope. Comparing to SS304 and nickel silver, the 1060 Al/erythritol composites exhibit a significant reduction of TCR by ~40% when rising the contact pressure from 0 MPa to 7 MPa, for all surface roughness levels tested. The in situ measured sample thickness variations confirmed that upon pressurization, the softer metal, i.e., 1060 Al, experiences more micro-deformation at the interface. In addition, correlations of the TCR data between metal/erthyritol interfaces were proposed with the surface roughness and contact pressure. The results and correlations attained in this work could serve as a reference for the thermal design of LHS units using erythritol.

Erythritol (ET) has received increasing research attention for medium-temperature phase change solar-thermal energy storage. However, ET suffers from serious supercooling, low thermal conductivity, poor solar absorption and leakage after melting, which lead to low solar-thermal energy harvesting and releasing efficiency. Herein, we simultaneously overcome these inherent shortcomings by impregnating ET within surface-roughened hydrophilic copper foam, which is prepared by subsequent oxidization of commercial copper foam and thermal reduction under hydrogen, and using stably dispersed crumpled graphene particles as the solar-thermal converter. Such oxidization-reduction-treated copper foam not only provides numerous heterogeneous nucleation sites and lowers the nucleation energy barrier for forming ET crystals during the solidification process, but also facilitates rapid charging and discharging along three-dimensional heat conductive networks, and confines the melted ET. Compared with neat ET, the copper foam-templated composites have reduced the supercooling degree by ~60 °C and improved thermal conductivity by more than 5 times, which in turn lead to a large latent-heat releasing percentage of 85.8% and a high heat-extraction efficiency of 94.2%. We demonstrate that such composites can be used for high-efficiency, medium-temperature, form-stable, direct solar-thermal energy harvesting, and the harvested heat can be readily converted into electricity to power small devices.

NaBH 4 was widely regarded as a low-cost hydrogen storage material due to its high-mass hydrogen capacity of approximately 10.8% (mass) and high volumetric hydrogen capacity of around 115 g·L –1 . However, it exhibits strong stability and requires temperatures above 500 °C for hydrogen release in practical applications. In this study, two polyhydric alcohols, xylitol and erythritol (XE), were prepared as a binary eutectic sugar alcohol through a grinding-melting method. This binary eutectic sugar alcohol was used as a proton-hydrogen carrier to destabilize NaBH 4 . The 19NaBH 4 -16XE composite material prepared by ball milling could start releasing hydrogen at 57.5 °C, and the total hydrogen release can reach over 88.8% (4.45% (mass)) of the theoretical capacity. When the 19NaBH 4 -16XE composite was pressed into solid blocks, the volumetric hydrogen capacity of the block-shaped composite could reach 67.2 g·L –1 . By controlling the temperature, the hydrogen desorption capacity of the NaBH 4 -XE composite material was controllable, which has great potential for achieving solid-state hydrogen production from NaBH 4 .

Long-term phase change thermal storage is critical for large-scale renewable energy application, as it uses phase change materials' (PCMs) high latent heat to resolve spatiotemporal energy supply-demand imbalances. However, the practical application of erythritol (ERY) and similar PCMs is hindered by their crystallization kinetics, which cause prolonged supercooling, spontaneous crystallization, and an inability to release stored heat on demand. Herein, we propose a novel strategy, constructing a deep eutectic system via strong hydrogen bonds between hydroxy-functionalized ionic liquids (OH-ILs) and ERY to tailor its crystallization kinetics and phase behavior. Among composites, 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-hydroxy pyridinium bromide (IL2)/ERY70 performs best, with melting enthalpy of 256.4 J/g and crystallization enthalpy of −159.8 J/g. Differential scanning calorimetry, in situ confocal micro-Raman spectroscopy demonstrate that the strong hydrogen-bonding interactions formed within the IL2/ERY system effectively reduce its melting point, and restructures its phase-change behavior and crystallization kinetics. The observed shift from cooling-induced to heating-induced cold crystallization, coupled with a transition from growth-dominated to nucleation-dominated kinetics, results in a more controllable, albeit slower, crystallization process. These synergistic modifications collectively enhance the supercooling stability of the material and significantly improve the controllability of energy release. In addition, IL2/ERY70 demonstrates exceptional cyclic stability, with its enthalpy varying only 5.1% over 50 cycles. Infrared analysis confirms its structural integrity, making it a promising high-performance material for long term thermal energy storage. This study provides an effective eutectic engineering strategy for advanced PCMs with high stability, controllable heat release, and long lifespan.

Three different methods, acid oxidation, mechanochemical process and ball milling, were used to modify multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The MWCNTs were dispersed into erythritol (Ery) to prepare composite phase change materials (PCMs). The effects of the MWCNTs on the thermal properties of erythritol-based composite PCMs were studied experimentally. FT-IR and XPS spectroscopy show that hydroxyl groups and carboxylic groups were generated on the surface of the MWCNTs after modification. The pretreatment of MWCNTs can improve their dispersibility in erythritol. When the mass fraction of MWCNTs was 1%, the thermal conductivity of Ery was increased obviously from 0.1956 W/(m·K) to 0.9779 W/(m·K). Besides, the MWCNTs could help improve the supercooling and solidification enthalpy of erythritol significantly. When the mass fraction of A-MWCNTs was only 0.5%, the freezing temperature of PCMs increased from 18.8 °C to 58.15 °C and the solidification enthalpy increased 50 J/g. After 10 heating and cooling cycles, the Ery/A-MWCNTs composites show a very good thermal cycling stability.

The main aim of this paper is to mitigate the supercooling and improve the heat release performance of erythritol (ET) as phase change material for thermal energy storage using the method of encapsulation and doping additives . The capsules containing ET, thickening and nucleating agent were prepared and various characterization techniques were employed to investigate the structure and thermo-physical properties of the composite, especially the supercooling inhibition and exothermicity improvement. Experimental results reveal that capsulation and adding thickening and nucleating agents have positive influence on the supercooling elimination, heat discharging ability improvement and thermal stability enhancement. The optimal capsules, with the maximal ET mass percentage of 59.2%, melt at 121.2 °C and freeze at 106.4 °C with the latent heat of 213.3 J/g and 206.9 J/g, respectively. Due to the improved crystallization kinetics , the degree of supercooling decreased by 83.6% as well as the heat release ratio increased by 52.2% compared to those of pristine ET. The as-prepared capsules have obvious core-shell structure, good compatibility between the shell and core materials. The thermal conductivity is 0.84 W/m K, increased by 29.2% than that of pristine ET. The results of accelerated thermal cycling test indicate that the supercooling, heat release ability and thermal reliability of encapsulated ET changed imperceptibly. In total, the technology of capsulation and adding thickening and nucleating agents can be used to suppress the supercooling and improve the thermal behavior of ET.

Erythritol has attracted wide attention due to high latent heat of 297.2 kJ/kg and excellent chemical stability as a medium- to low-temperature thermal energy storage (TES) material. However, low thermal conductivity leads to extended charging and discharging time and severely affects its large-scale application. In this article, three cheap nanoparticles (CuO, Al 2 O 3 , and Fe 2 O 3 ) and triethanolamine (TEA) were used as heat transfer enhancers and dispersant to improve the TES performance of erythritol. Sedimentation of nanoparticles in erythritol indicates that TEA is an effective dispersant in erythritol for three kinds of nanoparticles. The experimental results show that the thermal conductivity increased from 0.671 W/(m·K) of erythritol to 0.722 W/(m·K) and 0.761 W/(m·K) of 1.5 wt% CuO and Fe 2 O 3 nano-enhanced phase change materials (NePCMs), respectively. Based on the DSC results, the melting temperature and heat of fusion of NePCMs stayed stable with nanoparticles but increased significantly after adding TEA. Furthermore, the charging/discharging cyclic behaviors of NePCMs were tested in the cycle test platform. During the cycle test, the melting time of 1.5 wt% CuO NePCM decreased from 657.9 s for pure erythritol to 615.8 s but increased to 757 s and 680.6 s for 1.5 wt% Al 2 O 3 and 1.5 wt% Fe 2 O 3 NePCMs. The solidification time decreased from 311.2 s for erythritol to 179.3 s, 198.5 s, and 132.4 s for 1.5 wt% CuO, 1.5 wt% Al 2 O 3 , and 1.5 wt% Fe 2 O 3 NePCMs. Interestingly, the supercooling degree of NePCMs we got from the test was much lower than that from the DSC curves, indicating that the supercooling is related to the sample size. These results testify that CuO and Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles can improve the thermal conductivity of erythritol effectively.
