The development of biodegradable antifouling coatings represents a promising route to environmentally compatible marine protection. However, most polyester-based systems exhibit limited interfacial evolution and a poor long-term biofouling resistance. Here, we report poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)-based polyurethane (PU) coatings that bear covalently tethered eugenol (EU) side groups (PLGA–PU-EUx), designed to couple hydrolytic degradation with interfacial bioactivity. Compared with PLA-based analogues, the PLGA–PU-EUx coatings show greater mass loss, lower water contact angles during seawater immersion, more evident chemical and morphological evolution, and markedly enhanced inhibition of marine bacteria (Micrococcus luteus) and diatoms (Navicula incerta). At 15 wt % EU, diatom inhibition exceeds 95%. Leachate analysis indicates that freely dissolved EU-related species are highly limited under the tested conditions, while zebrafish embryo assays show no obvious acute developmental toxicity. These findings establish degradation-function coupling as a general strategy for designing durable and environmentally benign antifouling interfaces.

Eugenol, a major bioactive compound present in various essential oils with substantial antibacterial activity, has limited application in food industries due to its low water solubility. To address this limitation, a microemulsion system was developed utilizing Tween 80 as a surfactant and lactic acid as a co-surfactant to facilitate the delivery of eugenol. The resulting microemulsion underwent physicochemical characterization, antibacterial evaluation, and sanitation trials on fresh-cut lettuce. Phase analysis revealed three distinct types of microemulsions with stability and dispersibility: water-in-oil with 0%–20% water, bicontinuous with 30%–60% water, and oil-in-water with 70%–90% water. Antibacterial assays indicated minimum inhibitory concentrations of 0.5 mg/mL for Staphylococcus aureus and 0.25 mg/mL for Escherichia coli , along with minimum bactericidal concentrations of 1 and 0.5 mg/mL, respectively. Furthermore, the microemulsion at 1 mg/mL exhibited rapid bactericidal effects against both bacterial strains, achieving a population reduction of over 6-log units within 10 min. In refrigerated fresh-cut lettuce sanitation experiments, microemulsion concentrations of 0.25, 0.5, and 1 mg/mL effectively suppressed the number of total microbes, mold, and yeast, with 0.5 mg/mL treatment being most effective in maintaining lettuce quality and freshness. Additionally, these treatments contributed to the preservation of vitamin C content, chlorophyll level, and color stability. Overall, the results demonstrate that eugenol microemulsions hold strong potential as green sanitizers for vegetables, offering a promising avenue to enhance food safety and quality.

The spoilage and weight loss of meat products during storage always results in numerous problems for their commercialization and economic value. An edible thermo-reversible emulgel was prepared in this study, and its application in the preservation of meat products was investigated. The microstructure of the emulgel in liquid and solid forms was characterized. The decreased gel strength of the emulgel compared to the gelatin gel was likely due to the presence of the surfactant. The interaction between eugenol (Eu) and gelatin was mainly due to hydrophobic interactions and was weakened at 4 °C. The results of the physicochemical and antibacterial experiments for the meat products showed that the emulgel effectively controlled the release of Eu on the meat surface; thus, it could significantly inhibit the growth of microorganisms and weight loss in meat, which prolonged the shelf-life of meat for more than 3 days. The transparent emulgel can be easily removed from meat by soaking in warm water (∼40 °C), and it is a promising application for improving the safety and quality of meat products.

Aspirin eugenol ester (AEE) is a new potential drug with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant stress pharmacological activity. Paraquat (PQ) is an effective and commercially important herbicide that is widely used worldwide. However, paraquat is highly toxic and can cause various complications and acute organ damage, such as liver, kidney and lung damage. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether AEE has a protective effect on hepatotoxicity induced by PQ in vivo and in vitro. Cell viability, apoptosis rate, mitochondrial function and intracellular oxidative stress were detected to evaluate the protective effect of AEE on PQ-induced BRL-3A (normal rat hepatocytes) cytotoxicity in vitro. In vivo, AEE pretreatment could attenuate oxidative stress and histopathological changes in rat liver induced by PQ. The results showed that AEE could reduce the hepatotoxicity induced by PQ in vivo and in vitro. AEE reduced PQ-induced hepatotoxicity by inhibitingoxidative stress and maintaining mitochondrial function. This study proved that AEE is an effective antioxidant and can reduce the hepatotoxicity of PQ.

To explore more sustainable, safer UV-curable acrylates, a series of bio-based acrylates (SIEEA, SIPEEA, and SIDPEEA) are synthesized from eugenol and siloxanes under mild conditions without any solvent. The molecular structures of the acrylates are characterized, and the acrylates exhibit much lower viscosities than a commercial bisphenol A glycol dimethacrylate (BisGMA) does. The synthesized acrylates can be well cured under UV radiation to form thin films and thick 3D objects. The cured acrylates display significantly improved thermal properties and hydrophobicity and a decreased dielectric constant as low as 3.0 (1 kHz) due to the siloxane backbones. Moreover, they are low in toxicity with the cytotoxicity value above 80%, which is far lower than that of BisGMAs. More interestingly, SIEEA is used as a UV-curable ink and successfully shaped into objects such as chess pieces and a dental model with a high resolution by 3D printing. To summarize, these eugenol-based siloxane acrylates can be readily synthesized, showing a good promise for UV-curable coatings and 3D printing with high thermal stability, low dielectric constant, and low toxicity.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections have gained increasing attention due to the high incidence rates and high mortality, especially for the carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) infection that can cause severe complications (e.g., pneumonia and sepsis) in multiple organs. Therefore, the development of new antibacterial agents against CRKP is imperative. Inspired by natural plant antibacterial agents with broad-spectrum antibacterial properties, the antibacterial/biofilm activity of eugenol (EG) on CRKP and their underlying mechanisms are investigated in our work. It is found that EG exhibits remarkable inhibitory effects on planktonic CRKP in a dose-dependent fashion. Meanwhile, the destruction of membrane integrity induced by the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and glutathione reduction results in the leakage of bacterial cytoplasmic components, including DNA, β-galactosidase, and protein. Moreover, when EG contacts with bacterial biofilm, the whole thickness of the dense biofilm matrix decreases, and the integrity is destroyed. Overall, this work verified that EG could eliminate CRKP via ROS-induced membrane rupture, which offers vital evidence to explain the antibacterial ability of EG against CRKP.

Eugenol is a natural phenolic essential oil extracted from cloves, that has analgesic and anesthetic effects and is widely used in fishery anesthesia. However, the potential safety risks of aquaculture production associated with the massive use of eugenol and its developmental toxicity during early life stages of fish have been overlooked. In this study, zebrafish ( Danio rerio ) embryos at 24 hours post-fertilization (hpf) were exposed to eugenol at concentrations of 0, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 mg/L for 96 h. Eugenol exposure delayed the hatching of zebrafish embryos, and reduced the body length and the inflation rate of the swim bladder. The accumulated number of dead zebrafish larvae in the eugenol-exposed groups was higher than that of the control group, and it was dose-dependent. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis showed that the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway that regulates the development of the swim bladder during the hatching and mouth-opening stages was inhibited after eugenol exposure. Specifically, the expression of wif1 , a Wnt signaling pathway inhibitor, was significantly up-regulated, whereas the expression of fzd3b , fzd6 , ctnnb1 , and lef1 involved in the Wnt/β-catenin pathway was significantly down-regulated. These results suggest that the failure of zebrafish larvae to inflate their swim bladders as a result of eugenol exposure may be caused by the inhibition of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway inhibited. In addition, the inability to catch food due to the abnormal development of the swim bladder may be the key to the death of zebrafish larvae during the mouth-opening stage.

Preservation of refrigerated meat has always been a concern in food industry. In our study, eugenol (Eu) microcapsules were prepared to solve this problem. Eu was embedded into a gelatin-based emulgel with both low-energy and high-energy methods. The emulgel was further spray dried to obtain the Eu microcapsule. The physicochemical properties, microstructure, and thermodynamic properties of the microcapsules were studied. Results showed that the microcapsule powders prepared from the high-energy emulgel (HEG) contained less water and appeared no caking. But the microcapsule prepared from the low-energy emulgel (LEG) showed more regular shape. After dissolution, the reconstructed emulgel was investigated in terms of texture, microstructure, thermal properties, and preservation effects. Reconstructed emulgel from both LEG and HEG showed significantly higher gel strength but similar thermal properties comparing to the fresh one. In addition, meat covered with reconstructed emulgel showed less weight loss and more stable pH and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) value, as well as stronger resistance to bacterial reproduction, especially against lactic acid bacteria. The results indicated that the microencapsulation of Eu through gelatin-based emulgel might be a convenient and effective technology for refrigerated meat preservation.

Marine biofouling has caused huge economic and energy losses, and the application of marine antifouling coatings is one of the effective solutions to this problem. Sily-acrylate based self-polishing coatings are favored because of excellent antifouling performance. However, weak static antifouling performance restricts the development of sily-acrylate based antifouling coatings. To solve this problem, an eugenol ester-based sily-acrylate polymer (EMSPs) is synthesised, which showed both self-polishing and antifouling performance. The highest content of eugenol (EMSP-16) inhibits Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) up to 62.2% and 76.3%, respectively, and inhibits the adhesion of Halamphora sp. and Nitzschia closterium (N. closterium) up to 85.1% and 90.8%, respectively. Mussel adhesion experiments show that mussels tend to avoid coatings with high eugenol content. The eugenol ester-based sily-acrylate polymer provides a new way to develop new environmentally friendly marine antifouling coatings and alleviate heavy metal pollution in the marine environment.

The practical application of eugenol, a valuable bioactive compound, is significantly hindered by its inherent volatility and chemical instability. Conventional encapsulation systems often fail to provide adequate protection and lack intelligent release capabilities. This study presents an innovative solution using white beeswax as a smart shell material, leveraging its unique temperature-dependent crystalline structure for controllable release. Through systematic optimization of melt-dispersion parameters—specifically a 1:5 oil-to-water ratio, 100 mL Poloxamer F68, and 800 r/min stirring rate—we successfully fabricated eugenol-loaded microcapsules with uniform particle size (60–80 μm). Comprehensive characterization revealed their rough surface morphology, enhanced thermal stability, and robust mechanical properties, evidenced by an average rupture force of 4.09 mN. The microcapsules demonstrated exceptional temperature-responsive behavior: providing sustained release over several days at 20 °C while achieving complete release within hours at 45 °C. Remarkably, the release rate could be dynamically and reversibly modulated through temperature cycling between these points, attributed to the reversible crystalline-to-amorphous transitions of the beeswax matrix. Kinetic analysis established that this intelligent release follows first-order kinetics, indicating a diffusion-dominated mechanism through the wax matrix. This work not only establishes an optimized preparation protocol but also provides fundamental insights into the release mechanisms, offering a robust platform for developing smart delivery systems with promising applications in temperature-activated food packaging and dermatological therapeutics.

The aim of this study was to investigate the antifungal activity and mechanisms of citral, limonene and eugenol against Zygosaccharomyces rouxii . All the three essential oil ingredients presented strong antifungal activities against Z. rouxii . Minimum inhibitory concentrations of citral, limonene and eugenol were 0.188, 0.75 and 0.4 μL/mL, and the minimum fungicidal concentrations were 0.375, 3 and 0.8 μL/mL, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the tested essential oil compounds had destructive effects on the yeast cell surface. After treated by citral, limonene and eugenol, the relative electric conductivity and leakage of nucleic acid were increased significantly. SDS-PAGE analysis indicated that the essential oil components could result in the loss of soluble proteins and might also destroy the yeast protein or inhibit their expression. These results demonstrated that citral, limonene and eugenol exerted their antifungal action against Z. rouxii through cell membrane damage and destruction of cellular proteins. This study provided a theoretical possibility that citral, limonene and eugenol could be used as natural food preservatives for the control of Z. rouxii -related spoilage in the fruit juice industry.
