Mechanism of interaction between hydration–carbonation of C2S

Kai Luo,Wensheng Zhang,Jiayuan Ye,Jun Li,Zhongyuan Lu,Xuehong Ren

The physical and microscopic properties of γ-C 2 S and β-C 2 S under hydration, carbonation , and hydration–carbonation cycle reactions were investigated. The hydration–carbonation cycle reaction facilitated the carbon sequestration of C 2 S, and the generation of CaCO 3 filled the pores of the matrix and enhanced the matrix density in the carbon fixation reaction process. In the subsequent hydration and reaction process, the formation of hydration products increased the number of pores in the matrix and reduced the matrix density. Post-hydration, γ-C 2 S slurry became powder and had no mechanical strength . However, after carbonation reaction and two carbonation–hydration cycles, γ-C 2 S exhibited better mechanical properties than β-C 2 S.

Physicochemical effects of nanosilica on C3A/C3S hydration

Pengkun Hou,Xinming Wang,Piqi Zhao,Kejin Wang,Shiho Kawashima,Qinfei Li,Ning Xie,Xin Cheng,Surendra P. Shah

In this paper, C 3 A-gypsum and C 3 A-C 3 S-gypsum model cement systems with and without nanosilica were studied. The effects of nanosilica on the early stage cement hydration, particularly C 3 A hydration, were assessed through the heat of hydration (isothermal calorimetry), phase assemblage (quantitative X-ray diffraction), zeta potential, ion concentration measurements, and morphology (scanning electron microscopy) examinations. The results indicate that while promoting C 3 S hydration, nanosilica retarded C 3 A hydration in both the systems studied. The retardation was caused by the adsorption and coverage of nanosilica on C 3 A surfaces through the electrostatic interaction, thus decreasing the C 3 A dissolution rate and hindering the precipitation of hydration products. Consequently, the reduced gypsum consumption rate and the seeding effect of nanosilica further promoted C 3 S hydration. These findings suggest that nanosilica and other silica-based nanoparticles can physicochemically influence hydration of cement-based materials, and a better understanding of these influencing mechanisms can help optimize performances of nanoparticle-modified cement-based materials.

Study of gelatin as biodegradable shale hydration inhibitor

Xinliang Li,Guancheng Jiang,Lili Yang,Shuanglei Peng

In order to develop a biodegradable and efficient shale inhibitor, gelatin, a biodegradable amino polymer, was introduced as a potential shale inhibitor. The inhibitive properties were evaluated by linear swelling test, hot-rolling recovery test and montmorillonite (MMT) plate soaking test. The results showed that the inhibition of gelatin was better than other common inhibitors. The inhibitive mechanism of gelatin was also investigated via a variety of characterization methods. First of all, gelatin was adsorbed on MMT particles through electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds. Then, the negative charge on MMT particles was neutralized and the double electrical layers were suppressed. For the adsorbed gelatin molecules, only a few molecules entered the interlayer space and expelled water. Meanwhile, the main part of gelatin was strongly adsorbed on the surface of MMT particles and formed a polymer film, which made clay surface more hydrophobic. Thus, the polymer formed an effective shield to prevent the invasion of water. Finally, the MMT layers were compressed together in a form of thicker and larger agglomerations and the hydration was well inhibited.

Hydration heat and hydration products evolution of PC clinker-C$-CSA cement ternary system containing ZIF-8-based composite phase change materials

Dandan Yan,Min Li,Chunxiang Qian

Phase change materials are used in cementitious materials to reduce the hydration temperature rise and thus inhibit the temperature cracks generation. However, the influence mechanism of phase change materials on the hydration properties of cementitious materials is still unclear. In this study, ZIF-8-based composite phase change materials (CPCM) were added to the Portland cement (PC) clinker-anhydrite (C$)-calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement ternary system (PCCSA) in the form of admixtures. The effects of controlling the phase change temperatures, dosages of CPCM and hydration temperatures on the hydration exothermic characteristics, hydration products and the compressive strength development in the PCCSA composite system were investigated. CPCM addition reduced the hydration exothermic rate and cumulative heat release of the ternary system, especially when the phase change temperature of CPCM was 25.8 ℃, and the larger the dosage, the more obvious the reduction effect. In addition, CPCM did not participate in the hydration reaction of the system, but promoted the formation of CH and AFm. Simultaneously, the compressive strength of the PCCSA system paste containing CPCM decreased due to increased porosity in the paste. Furthermore, elevated hydration temperature significantly improved the hydration rate of the system, while reduced the hydration degree, and the hydration products types of the system were not affected by the hydration temperatures. This study results are fundamental for predicting the hydration behavior of cement systems containing CPCM and promoting the application of composite phase change materials in cementitious materials.

Hydration and microstructure of tricalcium silicate incorporating nano-TiO2

Zhenhai Xu,Jianming Gao,Zonghui Zhou,Yasong Zhao,Xuemei Chen

In order to clarify the enhancing mechanism of nano-TiO 2 (NT) on tricalcium silicate (C 3 S) paste, the hydration and microstructure of C 3 S with and without NT were investigated. Hydration properties were analyzed by setting time, compressive strength , hydration heat, Ca(OH) 2 content and relative content of C-S-H. Moreover, the microstructure of C 3 S paste was studied by pore structure and micromorphology. The results showed that seeding effect of NT promoted the chemical activity as well as hydration of C 3 S and more NT led to higher hydration degree. Besides, NT can increase the content of Ca(OH) 2 and the relative content of C-S-H, which also proved the enhancement effect of NT on C 3 S chemical activity and hydration. Furthermore, the seeding effect and filling effect of NT decreased total porosity, enhanced density and meliorated the microstructure of hardened C 3 S paste. Ultimately, the improved hydration and optimized microstructure introduced by NT enhanced the compressive strength of C 3 S paste.

Hydration kinetics and mechanism of C3S with cellulose nanocrystals

Aofei Guo,Danying Gao,Zhihui Sun,Hu Feng,Zhenyun Yu,Zeyu Guo,Hong Shang,Fengjuan Liu

Tricalcium silicate (C 3 S) is the primary ingredient in ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Understanding the hydration kinetics of C 3 S with cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) is the key to unveiling the intrinsic mechanism of CNC affecting OPC hydration . This study investigates the hydration interactions between C 3 S and CNC through extensive testing. Findings indicate that CNC incorporation can initially slow the hydration reaction and postpone the early-stage hydration of C 3 S. However, past the initial period (3 days in this study), CNC presence enhances the hydration pace and aids the hydration process , leading to an increase in the formation of calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H) and calcium hydroxide (CH) without creating new phases. Further, the presence of CNC promotes the homogenous hydration of C 3 S, ensuring a homogenous distribution of hydration products . It also reduces the Ca/Si ratio in the C–S–H, without altering the C–S–H morphology. A correlation is made between heat flow and the thickness of hydration products enveloping C 3 S particles, confirming that CNC can intensify the inward water diffusion rate through C 3 S particles for the same hydration product thickness. Critically, it is found that the effect of CNC on C 3 S hydration is dependent on the water/C 3 S ratio. A low or moderate water/C 3 S ratio can promote C 3 S hydration but a very high water/C 3 S ratio diminishes the beneficial effects of CNC on C 3 S hydration. Finally, the study proposes a explanation for CNC's influence over the hydration of C 3 S with varying water/C 3 S ratios.

Dehydration/hydration of MgO/H2O chemical thermal storage system

Zhihao Pan,C.Y. Zhao

Thermal energy storage systems improve the inefficiency of industrial processes and renewable energy systems (supply versus demand). Chemical reaction is a promising way to store thermal energy because of its high energy storage density , long-term energy storage, etc. This study investigated an MgO/H 2 O chemical thermal storage system that stores thermal energy by decomposing Mg(OH) 2 (endothermic reaction), and supplies thermal energy by combining water vapor with MgO (exothermic reaction). Heat supply is greatly influenced by MgO properties, particularly dehydration temperature. Therefore, the equilibrium hydration fractions of MgO prepared at various dehydration temperatures were measured. Then, the relation between dehydration temperature and the equilibrium hydration fractions of MgO was determined. The equilibrium hydration fractions of MgO at various hydration temperatures and pressures were also measured. The chemical thermal storage system was inefficient at dehydration temperatures lower than 350 °C or higher than 500 °C. The efficiency of this system can be improved by increasing the hydration temperature while keeping the relative vapor pressure unchanged.

A Novel Environment-Friendly Natural Extract for Inhibiting Shale Hydration

Fan Zhang,Jinsheng Sun,Xiaofeng Chang,Zhe Xu,Xianfa Zhang,Xianbin Huang,Jingping Liu,Kaihe Lv

This paper reports the first use of Tribulus terrestris extract (TTS), a newly developed nonionic surfactant, as an inhibitor for shale hydration. The critical micelle concentration of TTS was determined using the surface tension method, while its inhibition properties were evaluated with a variety of inhibition assessment methods. The sodium bentonite inhibition tests revealed that TTS can significantly inhibit clay pulping. The scanning electron microscopy images of unmodified and TTS-modified shale samples were observed and discussed. The hydrogen bonds between the hydrophilic tail of the TTS molecules and the available oxygen atoms on the clay silica surface led to the formation of a hydrophobic shell on the clay surface, which is considered as the main inhibition mechanism of TTS. The results from the contact angle experiments also validated this conclusion. In addition, the environmental aspects of TTS were measured in this paper. The experimental results suggest that TTS has a better inhibitor performance than either of the more conventional potassium chloride or polyamine and show that it has a good application prospect as an environment-friendly shale inhibitor.

pH-Controllable Enthalpically-Driven Interfacial Hydration of Strong Polyelectrolyte Brushes

Yue Huang,Xiaoxuan Zheng,Guangtao Mei,Haowen Lu,Shuji Ye,Guangming Liu

Understanding the thermodynamic driving force behind the pH-controllable interfacial hydration of strong polyelectrolyte brushes (SPBs) is crucial yet challenging. Using the poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) brush as a model system, we elucidate this thermodynamic mechanism by employing advanced femtosecond sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG-VS). SFG-VS identifies the hydrogen bond interactions between the bound hydronium counterions and the grafted PSS chains, along with the ordering of water molecules at the PSS brush surface. As pH increases, more hydrogen bonds are formed between the interfacial water molecules and the PSS brush accompanying the disruption of the integrated hydrogen-bond network inside the brush, concurrently enhancing the ordering of interfacial water molecules, thereby leading to the interfacial hydration of the PSS brush with negative changes in both enthalpy (ΔH < 0) and entropy (ΔS < 0). Consequently, the pH-controllable interfacial hydration of the PSS brush is consistent with enthalpically driven hydration. Moreover, this pH-controllable, enthalpically driven interfacial hydration may extend to other SPB systems, enabling the key properties of SPBs pH-responsive. This work provides a thermodynamic perspective on the pH-controllable interfacial hydration of SPBs, and will pave the way for novel applications of SPBs in material science.

Molecular elucidation of cement hydration inhibition by silane coupling agents

Chen Binmeng,Wang Meng,Manzano Hegoi,Zhao Yuyang,Li Yunjian

Silane coupling agents are widely recognized to retard early hydration when incorporated into fresh cement paste, yet the atomic-level mechanisms underlying their effects on clinker dissolution, such as adsorption of silane monomer onto reactive surface sites and modification of ion detachment pathways, remain unexplored. Here we show dissolution behavior of tricalcium silicate (Ca 3 SiO 5 ) under 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane impact using ab initio metadynamics, with experimental validation of the retardation effects in silane-treated pastes. The shielding effect of silane induces shifts in free energy changes of stepwise calcium dissolution from negative to positive and alters the most stable Ca coordination state during dissolution, resulting in the transition of dissolution from spontaneous to non-spontaneous. Specifically, hydrolyzed silane adsorbs dissociatively onto the Ca 3 SiO 5 surface by forming ionic Ca-O bonds, thereby occupying reactive sites and introducing steric hindrance. This, in turn, impedes coordination interactions between calcium ions and water molecules. Experimental results further corroborate these interactions, as evidenced by reduced calcium concentrations in silane-treated pastes, which in turn slowed the hydration process. These findings offer nanoscale insights into the role of SCAs in cement hydration and provide a foundation for future research into the complex interactions within organic/cement systems.

Hydration and conduction behavior of Sc and Zr-substituted Ba7Nb4MoO20

Sara Adeeba Ismail,Lulu Jiang,Hui Guo,Wenhao Li,Donglin Han

Ba 7 Nb 4 MoO 20 has acceptably high ionic conductivity at 600–800 °C and is attractive for potential application in high temperature solid state electrochemical devices. Up to now, most of the research focuses on isovalent and donor-doping to improve the electrical properties of Ba 7 Nb 4 MoO 20 . In this work, an acceptor-doping strategy was taken by doping Sc and Zr to partially substitute Nb. More vacant oxygen sites thereby form for charge compensation, leading to the increasing proton concentration following the compositional sequence of hydrated Ba 7 Nb 4 MoO 20  < Ba 7 Nb 3.97 Zr 0.03 MoO 19.985  < Ba 7 Nb 3.97 Sc 0.03 MoO 19.97 . Notably, both the H 2 O/D 2 O isotope effect and EMF measurements indicate that the proton conduction – if there is any – is negligibly small, and the Sc and Zr-doped Ba 7 Nb 4 MoO 20 is essentially an oxide ion conductor in the temperature range studied in this work.

Hydration Induces Dehydration: Creating Negative Swelling Gel by a Paradox

Zhi Zhao,Xiaotong Zheng,Yurong Li,Xuan Yao,Haibin Wang,Xuemei Liu,Tielong Han,Xiaoyan Song

Swelling positively in water is a common behavior of hydrogels, which, however, can lead to reduced mechanical performance and stability. Enabling negative swelling represents a promising way to address those issues but is extremely challenging to realize. Here, real negative swelling hydrogels are successfully prepared for the first time through a unique molecular architecture. Specifically designed interpenetrating transformable-rigid polymer network undergoes self-assembly and collapses upon hydration, which in turn dehydrates itself. This paradoxical hydration-induced-dehydration process brings about revolutionary outcomes. Gels can now lose up to 35% weight underwater and exhibit water-strengthened mechanical properties, enhanced structural responsiveness, underwater repair ability, resistance to deformation, and swelling turn-off effect. Those unique properties allow future material development and applications to be carried out in much broader dimensions.
