This work reports the ion exchange fabrication of maghemite (γ-Fe 2 O 3 ) modified NaY zeolite (Fe 2 O 3 @Y) with bifunction of adsorption and catalysis. The Fe 3+ successfully replaced the Na + in the β cage of zeolite in the ion exchange process and coordinated with framework oxygens to form magnetic γ-Fe 2 O 3 . Therefore, most of the γ-Fe 2 O 3 particles were confined in the β cages, which resulted in the high dispersal and stability of the catalyst. The Fe 2 O 3 @Y could remove methylene blue (MB) model pollutants up to 59.02 and 61.47% through the adsorption and catalysis process, respectively. The hydrogen bond between the OH − ions around the Fe 2 O 3 @Y surface and the N and O presented in the MB molecules enabled the chemical adsorption to MB, which accorded with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Further, the H + existed in the solution and the β cage of zeolite promoted the collapse of micro-nano bubbles (MNBs). Then, the γ-Fe 2 O 3 catalyst would be activated by high temperature and oxidated OH − to produce hydroxyl radicals for pollutant degradation . Thus, pollutant removal was attributed to the combined effects of adsorption and catalysis in the Fe 2 O 3 @Y + MNB system. In this work, the Fe 2 O 3 @Y was demonstrated as a potentially magnetic adsorbent or MNB catalyst for wastewater treatment .

To fabricate ideal wound dressings without involvement of chemical processes is attracting the interest in clinical requirements. Nano-maghemite-incorporated chitosan-coated cellulose porous membranes were prepared and evaluated in terms of those critical requirements as wound dressings. The composite membranes were characterized using elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). In addition, tensile strength, transparence, water absorption, water retention, water vapor transmission rate, adsorption of BSA, and antibacterial properties were thoroughly investigated. Incorporation of citrate-modified nano-maghemite strengthened the binding of chitosan onto cellulose membranes thus omitted the any subsequent crosslinking processes between chitosan and cellulose. Moreover, the incorporation enhanced the tensile strength and the water absorption and water retention capacity of the membrane. Chitosan was tightly coated on cellulose membranes without blocking the pores. The water vapor transmission rate was determined and exhibited suitable for ideal wound dressings. Especially, the antibacterial evaluation revealed that the coating of chitosan significantly enhanced the growth inhibition of both S. aureus and E. coli . Therefore, the obtained membrane was considered as a potential candidate for wound dressing materials.

Microbially mediated bioreduction of iron oxyhydroxide plays an important role in the biogeochemical cycle of iron. Geobacter sulfurreducens is a representative dissimilatory iron-reducing bacterium that assembles electrically conductive pili and cytochromes . The impact of supplementation with γ-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles (NPs) (0.2 and 0.6 g) on the G. sulfurreducens -mediated reduction of ferrihydrite was investigated. In the overall performance of microbial ferrihydrite reduction mediated by γ-Fe 2 O 3 NPs, stronger reduction was observed in the presence of direct contact with γ-Fe 2 O 3 NPs than with indirect contact. Compared to the production of Fe(II) derived from biotic modification with ferrihydrite alone, increases greater than 1.6- and 1.4-fold in the production of Fe(II) were detected in the biotic modifications in which direct contact with 0.2 g and 0.6 g γ-Fe 2 O 3 NPs, respectively, occurred. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that magnetite was a unique representative iron mineral in ferrihydrite when active G. sulfurreducens cells were in direct contact with γ-Fe 2 O 3 NPs. Because of the sorption of biogenic Fe(II) onto γ-Fe 2 O 3 NPs instead of ferrihydrite, the addition of γ-Fe 2 O 3 NPs could also contribute to increased duration of ferrihydrite reduction by preventing ferrihydrite surface passivation. Additionally, electron microscopy analysis confirmed that the direct addition of γ-Fe 2 O 3 NPs stimulated the electrically conductive pili and cytochromes to stretch, facilitating long-range electron transfer between the cells and ferrihydrite. The obtained findings provide a more comprehensive understanding of the effects of iron oxide NPs on soil biogeochemistry .

In recent years, the emergence of non-toxic but catalytically active inorganic nanoparticles has attracted great attention for cancer treatment, but the therapeutic effect has been affected by the limited reactive oxygen species in tumors. Therefore, the combination of chemotherapy
and chemodynamic therapy is regarded as a promising therapeutic strategy. In this paper, we reported the preparation and bioactivity evaluation of poly(lactic acid-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) grafted-γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles with dual response of endogenous
peroxidase and catalase like activities. Our hypothesis is that PLGAgrafted γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles could be used as a drug delivery system for the anti-tumor drug doxorubicin to inhibit the growth of lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells; meanwhile, based on its
mimic enzyme properties, this kind of nanoparticles could be combined with doxorubicin in the treatment of A549 cells. Our experimental results showed that the PLGAgrafted γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles could simulate the activity of catalase and decompose hydrogen
peroxide into H2O and oxygen in neutral tumor microenvironment, thus reducing the oxidative damage caused by hydrogenperoxide to lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells. In acidic microenvironment, PLGA grafted γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles could simulate the activity
of peroxidase and effectively catalyze the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to generate highly toxic hydroxyl radicals, which could cause the death of A549 cells. Furthermore, the synergistic effect of peroxidase-like activity of PLGA-grafted γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles
and doxorubicin could accelerate the apoptosisand destruction of A549 cells, thus enhancing the antitumor effect of doxorubicin-loaded PLGA-grafted γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles. Therefore, this study provides an effective nanoplatform based on dual inorganic biomimetic
nanozymes for the treatment of lung cancer.

The aim of this study is to develop transparent maghemite/cellulose nanocomposite membranes with high porosity, high adsorption capacity and controlled release of doxorubicin to be used as a candidate for wound dressing. The membranes were fabricated by a tape casting method through blending a homogeneous dispersion of citrate coated maghemite nanoparticles and cellulose in the NaOH/urea aqueous solution system. The prepared membranes were characterized by Light transmittance measurements, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray Diffractometry (XRD), Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Tensile tests and Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Furthermore, porosity, swelling behavior, water loss ratio and Bovine serum albumin adsorption capacity were evaluated. Drug loading and release was investigated using doxorubicin hydrochloride as a model drug. In vitro cytotoxicity and cells morphology assays of cells growth and proliferation were also studied. This study served as a demonstration of the feasibility of maghemite/cellulose nanocomposite membranes for loading and release of bioactive compounds as a candidate for wound dressing.

The composite material of manganese-copper oxide/maghemite (Mn x Cu y O z /γ-Fe 2 O 3 ) was synthesized by the co-precipitation-calcination method. With the initial concentration of 0.2 g/L Mn x Cu y O z /γ-Fe 2 O 3 and 10 mg/L O 3 , the chloramphenicol (CAP, 10 mg/L) could be completely degraded, which was about 2.22 times of that treated with ozonation alone. The contribution of O 3 and hydroxyl radical (•OH) for CAP degradation in the catalytic process was 6.9% and 93.1%, respectively. According to the effects of catalyst dosage, ozone dosage, and pH on the catalytic performance of Mn x Cu y O z /γ-Fe 2 O 3 , a predictive empirical model was developed for the ozonation with the Mn x Cu y O z /γ-Fe 2 O 3 system. The HCO 3 − /CO 3 2− and phosphates in solution could inhibit the degradation of CAP with the inhibition ratios 8.45% and 13.8%, respectively. The HCO 3 − /CO 3 2− could compete with CAP and react with •OH, and the phosphates were considered as poisons for catalysts by blocking the surface active sites to inhibit ozone decomposition . The intermediates and possible degradation pathways were detected and proposed. The catalytic ozonation could effectively control the toxicity of the treated solution, but the toxicity was still not negligible. Furthermore, Mn x Cu y O z /γ-Fe 2 O 3 could be easily and efficiently separated from the reaction system with an external magnet, and it possessed excellent reusability and stability.

Magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) have been widely applied in environmental remediation, biomass immobilization and wastewater treatment, but their potential impact on anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) biomass remains unknown. In this study, the short-term and long-term impacts of maghemite NPs (MHNPs) on the flocculent sludge wasted from a high-rate anammox reactor were investigated. Batch assays showed that the presence of MHNPs up to 200 mg L −1 did not affect anammox activity, reactive oxygen species production, or cell membrane integrity. Moreover, long-term addition of 1–200 mg L −1 MHNPs had no adverse effects on reactor performance. Notably, the specific anammox activity, the abundance of hydrazine synthase structural genes and the content of extracellular polymeric substance were increased with elevated MHNP concentrations. Meanwhile, the community structure was shifted to higher abundance of Candidatus Kuenenia indicated by high-throughput sequencing. Therefore, MHNPs could be applied to enhance anammox flocculent sludge due to their favorable biocompatibility.
