Experimental study on enhanced flotation of fine molybdenite by CO2 nanobubbles with positive charge

Junchao Wang,Yunfei Zhang,Yulei Li,Lijun Deng,Yijun Cao,Guosheng Li

The flotation efficiency of fine molybdenite remains low because of the strong hydrophilicity and electronegativity of the edges and the low probability of bubble-particle collision. In this work, an effective approach has been proposed to enhance the flotation of fine molybdenite using positively charged CO 2 nanobubbles (NBs) based on electrostatic driving and NB bridging effects. The positively charged CO 2 NBs with an average size of approximately 210 nm and a zeta potential of about 9 mV were prepared using a micro-nano bubble generator based on circulating countercurrent and multiphase vortex gas-liquid shearing technology. The flotation test results showed that compared with conventional flotation, the introduction of NBs could significantly improve the flotation efficiency of fine molybdenite, and the strengthening effect of CO 2 NBs on the flotation of fine molybdenite was better than that of air NBs. The interaction mechanism was illustrated through contact angle measurements, turbidity measurements, zeta potential measurements, hydrophobic agglomeration behavior analysis and fractal dimension analysis. On one hand, positively charged CO 2 NBs could be adsorbed onto the basal and edge surfaces through hydrophobic attraction and electrostatic attraction, respectively, to enhance the overall hydrophobicity of molybdenite particles, facilitate hydrophobic agglomeration of particles, and thereby increase the apparent size of particles and the probability of collision between particles and macro-sized bubbles. On the other hand, CO 2 NBs could boost the attachment between particles and macro-sized bubbles through bridging effect, thereby significantly improving the flotation efficiency of fine molybdenite. This research has important theoretical and practical value in expanding the enhanced methods for the flotation process of fine molybdenite

Enhancing separation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite via ozone micro-nano bubble oxidation and flotation

Yehao Huang,Jia Yao,Bowen Yu,Longyu Zhang,Xiangyu Song,Weijun Peng

Chalcopyrite and molybdenite present challenges in flotation separation due to their similar floatability. In this study, ozone micro-nano bubble was employed to oxidize chalcopyrite and molybdenite, altering their surface properties to facilitate them separation via flotation. The flotation results demonstrated a significant reduction in the recovery of chalcopyrite through ozone micro-nano bubble oxidation, while molybdenite remained unaffected. The concentrates with the Mo recovery remained steady at 84 % and Cu recovery below 9 % were achieved in flotation experiments of the artificially mixed ores with various mass ratios of chalcopyrite and molybdenite. Analysis of the results from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), zeta potential , and contact angle measurements indicated that the surface of chalcopyrite was oxidized to form metal oxides and hydroxides after ozone micro-nano bubble oxidation, thereby decreasing its floatability. In contrast, the oxidation products of molybdenite dissolved in the pulp, preserving its original surface and floatability. Additionally, experimental results confirmed that micro-nano bubbles exhibited superior oxidation effectiveness and rate than those of conventional bubbles. In summary, ozone micro-nano bubble oxidation presented a promising green alternative to traditional depressants for the efficient separation of copper and molybdenum sulfide ore.

Efficient and Green Flotation Separation of Molybdenite from Chalcopyrite Using 1-Thioglycerol as Depressant

Feng Jiang,Shuai He,Wei Sun,Yuanjia Luo,Honghu Tang

The effective and environmental separation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite has long presented a challenge in mineral processing due to their similar floatability and close association at room temperature. This study explores the non-toxic 1-thioglycerol (1-TG) as a selective depressant for chalcopyrite–molybdenite flotation separation. An impressive separation effect was realized through single-mineral and mixed-mineral flotation experiments when using 1-TG as a depressant and kerosene as a collector. Contact angle measurements, zeta potential tests, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) confirm the selective adsorption of 1-TG on the chalcopyrite surface, leading to enhanced surface hydrophilicity and the inhibition of collector adsorption. The depression mechanism is further elucidated through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which demonstrates that it occurs via chemosorption between the thiol group in 1-TG and active iron sites on the chalcopyrite surface. These findings provide a potential efficient depressant for chalcopyrite–molybdenite flotation separation with low dosage, environmental friendliness, and human harmlessness.

A fundamental study of leaching kinetics and mechanisms of molybdenite assisted by mechanical activation

Yubiao Li,Zhiming Li,Bing Wang,Zhaomin Dong,Shaoxian Song

The mechanical activation was applied as a pre-treatment method to improve molybdenite (MoS 2 ) leaching . The effects of grinding ball size, ball to powder mass ratio, milling speed and time, molar ratio of mineral to oxidants, as well as the influence of solution pH, temperature and leaching time were investigated in detail. The results showed an extremely low Mo extraction (less than 2% at acidic and neutral conditions) for MoS 2 activated alone. However, Mo extraction was increased significantly after co-grinding of MoS 2 with NaClO 2 and Na 2 CO 3 , e.g ., more than 58% in any leaching solution applied. Prolonging the grinding time improved Mo extraction but the efficiency was declined gradually, giving rise to an optimum grinding efficiency at 4 h with a molar ratio of 1:3:5 for MoS 2 :NaClO 2 :Na 2 CO 3 . Distilled water was selected as the leaching solution since this gave similar Mo recovery to other lixiviants. Higher temperature and longer leaching time were beneficial to Mo extraction. However, it was also found that too large grinding balls and high ball to powder mass ratio adversely affected MoS 2 extraction. The kinetics analysis indicated that the leaching of activated MoS 2 followed a chemical reaction controlled mechanism. The XRD and SEM analyses indicated that mechanical activation not only reduced the particle size of MoS 2 but also triggered solid state reaction to produce soluble Na 2 MoO 4 , thereby improving Mo extraction significantly.

Fluidized-bed flotation of coarse molybdenite particles: Matching mechanism for bubble and particle sizes

Chao Li,He Kang,Ai Wang,Boai Zhang,Yijun Cao

Fluidized-bed flotation is a novel process with combined features of flotation and density separation. The application of fluidized-bed flotation in grinding circuit to reject coarse gangues for sulfide ores has been increasingly attracting attentions. Previous studies have focused on the effect of mineral liberation on coarse particle separation. Little work has yet been conducted to simultaneously investigate the effect of mineral liberation, particle and bubble sizes on the fluidized-bed flotation efficiency. The lack of this work has hindered the process optimization to some extent. In this study, three sizes of bubbles (498 μm, 1200 μm, 1952 μm) were generated to separate molybdenite ores under three particle size fractions (150–450 μm, 450–700 μm and 700–1000 μm) in a fluidized-bed flotation column (80 mm in diameter). For the 150–450 μm and 450–700 μm particles, small bubbles of 498 μm could achieve separation by effectively reducing the particle density. For the 700–1000 μm particles with greater mass, intermediate bubble of 1200 μm was required to reduce the particle density for separation. No separation was observed for the three particle size classes with the oversized bubbles of 1952 μm due to high bubble detachment probability. It was concluded that fluidized-bed flotation is a consequence of matched bubble and particle sizes affected by the exposure rate of hydrophobic mineral and its distributing discreteness, the underlying mechanism for which was discussed. It is believed that the outcomes of this work could facilitate the optimization of fluidized-bed flotation in coarse gangue rejecting for sulfide ores.

Application of Acetylcysteine for Selective Separation of Chalcopyrite and Molybdenite: Flotation Performance and Depression Mechanism

Zhang Taozhong,Yin Wanzhong,Yao Jin,Ban Xiaoqi,Sun Wenju,Du Weifan,Yin Chao

Given the comparable natural floatability of molybdenite and chalcopyrite, together with the environmental concerns associated with conventional inorganic depressants, achieving their flotation separation remains a major challenge. Herein, acetylcysteine (NAC), a low-toxicity organic reagent, was investigated as a selective depressant for the flotation separation of molybdenite and chalcopyrite. Flotation results showed that, at pH 8.0 and 40.0 mg/L NAC, efficient separation of molybdenite from chalcopyrite was achieved, with a molybdenite recovery of 97.69%, a chalcopyrite recovery of 10.02%, and a selectivity index of 19.50. Furthermore, NAC remained highly effective in depressing chalcopyrite flotation under xanthate-containing conditions. To elucidate the interfacial origin of NAC selectivity, zeta-potential, wettability, adsorption capacity, FTIR, XPS, and DFT analyses were integrated to reveal the adsorption behavior and interaction mechanism of NAC on chalcopyrite and molybdenite. The results suggest that the –SH and –C═O groups of NAC participate in interfacial interactions with surface Cu sites on chalcopyrite, thereby contributing to its preferential adsorption, whereas only weak interaction is observed on molybdenite. This preferential adsorption markedly increased the hydrophilicity of chalcopyrite, while molybdenite retained its hydrophobicity. These findings indicate that NAC is a promising organic depressant for the selective flotation separation of molybdenite from chalcopyrite.

Tiopronin as a novel copper depressant for the selective flotation separation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite

Bingqiao Yang,Hai Yan,Mengyuan Zeng,Huanyu Zhu

In this work, an environmental-friendly surfactant named tiopronin was tested as a novel copper depressant in copper-molybdenum sulfide separation for the first time. The separation performances were evaluated by micro-flotation and the depression mechanism was revealed by means of Zeta potential , Scanning Electron Microscope and Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (SEM-EDS), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) measurements. The micro-flotation tests demonstrated that tiopronin exhibited powerful depressing effect on chalcopyrite and it could achieve satisfactory separation results with high selectivity in wide pH range. The novel depressant had promising application prospect due to its high selectivity and low toxicity in compared with conventional one. Zeta potential, SEM-EDS, XPS and ToF-SIMS measurements manifested that tiopronin was chemisorbed on chalcopyrite surface through the strong chemical reaction of copper sites with C O and SH groups in tiopronin molecular to form five-membered chelating rings. In addition, a possible depression model was proposed.

Interaction Mechanism between Molybdenite and Kaolinite in Gypsum Solution Using Kerosene as the Flotation Collector

Liqing Sun,Yijun Cao,Yinfei Liao,Zilong Ma

This paper aims to understand the fundamental interaction mechanism between molybdenite and kaolinite in gypsum solution using kerosene as collector. Micro-flotation tests were conducted to study the effect of gypsum solution on the flotation performance of mixed −74 μm molybdenite and −10 μm kaolinite mineral. The results showed that the recovery of molybdenite decreased from 86% to 74% while the gypsum solution concentration increased from 0 to 800 mg/L, indicating the detrimental effect of kaolinite on molybdenite flotation could be enhanced by gypsum solution. This is mainly caused by the slime coating of kaolinite on molybdenite through dissolved calcium ion of gypsum solution. In order to confirm the slime coating phenomenon, zeta potential distribution, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements were used to investigate interaction characteristics and mechanisms. The zeta potential distribution results revealed that mixed samples had the value between signal molybdenite and kaolinite samples in gypsum solution, which proved the coating phenomenon of kaolinite on molybdenite. Moreover, the coating phenomenon was becoming more and more obvious with the gypsum solution concentration. The coating phenomenon of kaolinite on molybdenite surface was also directly observed from SEM results. The AFM results provided further evidence for the possibility of slime coating, as the adhesion force increased with the gypsum solution concentration, which means the aggregates of molybdenite and kaolinite were becoming more stable.

Selective fabrication of hydrophilic BiOCl deposition layer on bismuthinite surface for efficient molybdenite/bismuthinite separation

Shangyong Lin,Hongliang Zhang,Xiangsong Meng,Ruolin Wang,Wei Sun,Haisheng Han,Chenyang Zhang

Molybdenite and bismuthinite are valuable components arising from Mo–Bi sulfide ore, and their recoveries are considerably limited by separation efficiency. Herein, calcium hypochlorite (Ca(ClO) 2 ) was first introduced as bismuth depressant for efficient separation of molybdenite and bismuthinite, and its depression mechanisms were investigated through a series of analytical techniques supplemented with solution chemistry and thermodynamic calculations. Flotation results showed that Ca(ClO) 2 had a stronger depressing ability than conventional depressant sodium sulfide and exhibited superior selectivity for bismuthinite against molybdenite. At pH around 8.0, the high-selective separation of Mo–Bi bulk concentrate was realized, where more than 96% of molybdenite was recovered and over 98% of bismuthinite was depressed. Solution chemistry and thermodynamic analysis indicated that the bismuthinite surface was preferentially oxidized by Ca(ClO) 2 to SO2- 4 and Bi 3+ . The former dissolved into solution and existed as stable ions, whereas the Bi 3+ further interacted with Cl − and was hydrolyzed as BiOCl precipitates. Surface analysis demonstrated that the deposition of BiOCl on the bismuthinite surface not only made its surface rougher but also enhanced its surface hydrophilicity. In comparison, the surface of molybdenite was slightly oxidized and it remained hydrophobic as confirmed from scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and contact angle results. The difference in surface characteristics resulted in the selective adsorption of collector on the surface of molybdenite rather than that of bismuthinite, thus improving the floatability of molybdenite and drastically deteriorating the floatability of bismuthinite. This work suggests that Ca(ClO) 2 could be a promising depressant for bismuthinite in the flotation separation of Mo–Bi sulfide ore.

Electrooxidation of polyacrylamide in the wastewater from molybdenum ore flotation: Resurrecting molybdenite floatability and degradation mechanism

Longyu Zhang,Junhong Liu,Zepeng Ma,Jinting Sha,Weijun Peng,Yehao Huang,Wei Wang,Yijun Cao,Bingqiao Yang,Nasriddinov Zamoniddin Zainiddinovich

To enable the reuse of molybdenite flotation wastewater, it is necessary to degrade the residual flocculant polyacrylamide (PAM) to eliminate its inhibition on molybdenite floatability. This study adopted electrooxidation technology to degrade PAM and investigate its mechanism as well as its effect on restoring molybdenite flotation. Under optimized conditions (current density: 40 mA/cm², oxidation time: 60 min), the molybdenite recovery in the 10 ppm PAM system increased from 1 % to 96 %, with a total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency of 81.39 %. For the artificial mixed ore (molybdenite:quartz = 1:9), after treatment of the system containing 2.5 ppm PAM, the Mo recovery and grade increased from 17 %/10 % to 96 %/27 %, respectively. Characterizations via atomic force microscopy (AFM), contact angle measurement, and Zeta potential analysis confirmed that PAM forms a hydrophilic adsorption layer on the molybdenite surface via hydrogen bonding (evidenced by a contact angle decrease from 85° to 55°). In contrast, electrooxidation degraded PAM into short-chain fragments, reducing the PAM coverage on the molybdenite surface to 10.33 % and restoring the contact angle to 83°, thereby reconstructing hydrophobicity. The degradation pathway involves free radicals (·OH/·Cl/·ClO) attacking the PAM main chain to cause chain scission, generating small-molecule products containing alkenes and esters, which are ultimately mineralized into CO₂, H₂O, and NO₃⁻. This technology provides an efficient solution for flotation wastewater recycling and green mineral processing.

Promoting azo dye decomposition in natural molybdenite activated peroxymonosulfate process by low concentration of ferrous ions

Qin Yingzhi,Zhang Xin,Yuan Guang-En

In this study, low concentration of ferrous ions (Fe 2+ ) was added into natural molybdenite (MDN) activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) process to degrade a typical azo dye, orange G (OG). It was found that the addition of Fe 2+ promoted OG degradation and simultaneously reduced the leaching of toxic Mo ions significantly. Further, the utilization efficiency of MDN was improved immensely, which was estimated from reuse experiment. MDN mainly acted as the reductant to promote cycling of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox couple through reducible sulfur and Mo(IV) on its surface. Sulfate radicals (SO 4 •- ), hydroxyl radical (•OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) were verified as the main reactive oxygen species responsible for OG degradation by scavenging tests and electron paramagnetic resonance. Some experiment parameters, such as MDN dosage, Fe 2+ concentration, PMS concentration, initial solution pH and coexisting anion, all affected OG degradation efficiency. In a word, this work provides a new method of enhancing PMS activation by MDN using low concentration of Fe 2+ for degradation of organic pollutants in water. MDN was applied as an efficient co-catalyst for permonosulfate activation. The sulfur element on MDN surface was able to reduce generated Fe 3+ . , , and were responsible for the removal of OG in MDN/Fe 2+ /PMS system. The Fe 2+ was demonstrated to promote the reusability of MDN.

A fluoride-free dual-functional coating based on natural molybdenite for efficient anti-icing and deicing

Le He,Yingzhi Chen,Miaohua Zhou,Yuanhong Zhong,Yingxia Zhao,Ming Sun,Lin Yu

Natural molybdenite enables a eco-friendly superhydrophobic photothermal coating. • Phase-regulated 1T/2H-MoS 2 heterostructure enables highly efficient photothermal conversion. • The coating exhibits outstanding icephobicity, delaying ice formation for over 16 h at −15 °C. • The coating melts a 4-mm ice layer at −20 °C in 100 s, with near-complete evaporation within 180 s. • The coating withstands corrosion, extreme pH, and abrasion, showing high real-world applicability. In cold environments, ice accumulation poses infrastructure challenges, highlighting the need for advanced anti-icing and deicing technologies. Here, a photothermal superhydrophobic coating with hierarchical micro/nano structure was fabricated from natural molybdenite. Using (3–aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) as an intercalator, a mixed–phase MoS 2 heterostructure (M2–MoS 2 , 1T/2H) was obtained. Subsequent functionalization with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and epoxy resin (EP) yielded a robust bilayer coating, designated M2–MoS 2 @PDMS–EP/PDMS. The resulting coating exhibits excellent superhydrophobicity, with a water contact angle (WCA) of 150.8° and a sliding angle (SA) of 7.5°. At −15 ± 1 °C, it delays ice formation for 57,829 s, significantly outperforming conventional counterparts. Owing to broad-spectrum solar absorption and efficient photothermal conversion, the coating rapidly reaches 85.0 °C under 100 mW/cm 2 irradiation at a 0° tilt, while maintaining performance across various inclination angles. It also demonstrates rapid deicing capability, melting a 4  mm-thick ice layer at −20 ± 2 °C within 276 s under 100 mW/cm 2 illumination. Furthermore, the coating exhibits outstanding durability, retaining hydrophobic properties after exposure to saline, acidic, and alkaline environments, as well as ultrasonic vibration and mechanical wear tests. This study provides a cost-effective and sustainable strategy for designing high-performance anti-icing coatings based on natural mineral resources.
