Facilely transforming bulk materials to SnO/pristine graphene 2D-2D heterostructures for stable and fast lithium storage

Pinxian Jiang,Jialun Jing,Yizhe Wang,Hongju Li,Xiaoying He,Yungui Chen,Wei Liu

Two-dimensional (2D) nano-structured tin monoxide (SnO) offers fascinating possibilities as anode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). 2D architectures of SnO are highly desirable to access advanced lithium storage properties however their application is impeded by the lack of synthetic method. In this study, we report a scalable synthetic route to facilely deriving SnO/pristine-graphene (p-G) 2D-2D heterostructure from bulk SnO and graphite. A “top-down” synthetic method was found effective in transforming SnO micro-sized particles into nanosheets down to a few nanometers in thickness. Assembled with pristine graphene (p-G), the SnO nanosheets were used to build a SnO/p-G heterostructure that delivers remarkable Li-ion storage performances: reversible capacities of 633.9 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.05 A g −1 , and excellent cycling stabilities (0.027% capacity fade per cycle at 1 A g −1 after 700 cycles) were obtained. In comparison, raw SnO exhibited severe SEI over-growth and continuous capacity decay from the on-set at 0.05 A g −1 . The structural advantages of 2D-2D heterostructure were elucidated to understand its exceptional lithium storage properties. This study demonstrates a facile and scalable strategy for producing 2D-2D heterostructures from low-cost bulk materials for LIBs application.

Hybrid of silver nanowire and pristine-graphene by liquid-phase exfoliation for synergetic effects on electrical conductive composites

Konghua Liu,Shilong Chen,Yuanfang Luo,Lan Liu

One-dimensional (1D) silver nanowire (AgNW) and 2D defect-free pristine-graphene have been integrated together to form a 3D hybrid network. The AgNWs were introduced into pristine graphene dispersion and then the sedimentation containing the two ocurred, leading to the formation of an AgNW/graphene hybrid. The graphene sheets embedded within the AgNW network fill the open spaces and enhance the interfacial contact between the AgNWs, leading to a uniform electrical conductive network. The AgNW network can prevent the re-stacking of graphene sheets, and the graphene sheets act as a protective layer to prevent the AgNWs from surface oxidation. The prepared hybrid was used as reinforcing nanoscale fillers to prepare epoxy-based conductive composites. The results show that the hybrid has synergetic effects on the improvement of the electrical conductivity and shear strength of the composites. The composites filled with the AgNW/graphene hybrid have lower volume resistivity and larger shear strength than the composites which contain graphene or AgNWs alone. It is found that the synergetic effect of the hybrid results from the uniform dispersion of the hybrid filler in the epoxy matrix and the formation of more effective electron-transport channels in the composites. This synthetic approach to the 1D/2D nanohybrids opens up opportunities for various potential applications ranging from devices to transparent electrodes and conductive composites.

The interaction between N,N-dimethylacrylamide and pristine graphene and its role in fabricating a strong nanocomposite hydrogel

Gao Ailin,Chen Shuju,Zhao Shuai,Zhang Guangfa,Cui Jian,Yan Yehai

In this work, mechanically strong and electrically conductive poly( N , N -dimethylacrylamide) (PDMAA)/pristine graphene (GR) nanocomposite hydrogel was synthesized by directly dispersing pristine GR into N , N -dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) monomers, which have been commonly used to prepare polymeric hydrogel as reactive monomers. Results showed that the introduction of GR nanosheets as physical cross-linking and its cooperation with organic cross-linker N , N -methylene bisacrylamide (BIS) were found to efficiently improve the mechanical strength, dimensional homogeneity of pore structure, thermal and electrical conductivity of resultant PDMAA hydrogels. More importantly, the intrinsic interaction between DMAA monomer and GR was systematically analyzed by ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotometer, nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR) and rheological test for the first time. These studies help us understand the formation mechanism of PDMAA hydrogel when graphene was added, as well as the fundamental parameters that govern the properties of hydrogels.

Realizing Spontaneously Regular Stacking of Pristine Graphene Oxide by a Chemical-Structure-Engineering Strategy for Mechanically Strong Macroscopic Films

Yu Zhang,Shijun Wang,Pingping Tang,Zhenfang Zhao,Zhiping Xu,Zhong-Zhen Yu,Hao-Bin Zhang

Mechanical–electrical properties of macroscopic graphene films derived from graphene oxide (GO) sheets are substantially restricted by their surface wrinkles and structural misalignment. Herein, we propose a chemical-structure-engineering strategy to realize the spontaneously regular stacking of modified GO (GO-m) with trace carboxyl. The highly aligned GO-m film delivers a fracture strength and modulus of nearly 3- and 5-fold higher than a wrinkled film with conventional Hummer’s method derived GO (GO-c). The favorable assembly pattern of GO-m sheets is attributed to their decreased interfacial friction on the atomic scale, which weakens their local gelation capability for freer configuration adjustment during the assembly process. The chemical structure of GO-m can be further engineered by an epoxide-to-hydroxyl reaction, achieving a record high tensile strength of up to 631 MPa for the pristine GO film. By exploring the relationship between the surface terminations of GO and its stacking mode, this work proves the feasibility to realize high-performance macroscopic materials with optimized microstructure through the chemical modulation of nanosheet assembly.

Synthesis of Cobalt Phosphide Nanoparticles Supported on Pristine Graphene by Dynamically Self-Assembled Graphene Quantum Dots for Hydrogen Evolution

Xiaoyan Wang,Weiyong Yuan,Yanan Yu,Chang Ming Li

A highly active, durable, and low-cost hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst is desirable for energy storage through water splitting but its fabrication presents great challenges. Herein, mediated by dynamically self-assembled graphene quantum dots (GQDs), small, uniform, high-density, and well-dispersed CoP nanoparticles were grown in situ on pristine graphene for the first time. This hybrid nanostructure was then employed as HER electrocatalyst, showing an onset potential of 7 mV, an overpotential of 91.3 mV to achieve 10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 42.6 mV dec −1 , and an exchange current density of 0.1225 mA cm −2 , all of which compare favorably to those of most reported non-noble-metal catalysts. The developed catalyst also exhibits excellent durability with negligible current loss after 2000 cyclic voltammetry cycles (+0.01 to −0.17 V vs. RHE) or 34 h of chronoamperometric measurement at an overpotential of 91.3 mV. This work not only develops a new strategy for the fabrication of high-performance and inexpensive electrocatalysts for HER but also provides scientific insight into the mechanism of the dynamically self-assembled GQDsmediated synthesis process. Graphical CoProducing H 2 : Small, uniform, high-density, and well-dispersed CoP nanoparticles (NPs) were grown in situ on pristine graphene for the first time by dynamically self-assembled graphene quantum dots (GQDs)-mediated synthesis, showing a very high catalytic activity and excellent durability toward the hydrogen evolution reaction.

Synthesis of Fe3O4/graphene oxide/pristine graphene ternary composite and fabrication electrochemical sensor to detect dopamine and hydrogen peroxide

Linlin Cai,Bingjie Hou,Yangyang Shang,Liao Xu,Bo Zhou,Xinning Jiang,Xiaoqing Jiang

In this work, a new Fe 3 O 4 /graphene oxide (GO)/pristine graphene (PG) ternary composite (Fe 3 O 4 /GO/PG) was successfully synthesized. The structure of Fe 3 O 4 /GO/PG was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The TEM result shows that the small PG sheets are attached to the larger GO sheets and the Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles are anchored on the surface of GO/PG composite. A sensor based on this Fe 3 O 4 /GO/PG has been fabricated successfully to detect dopamine (DA) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). The linear detection ranges for DA and H 2 O 2 are 0.30–30 μM and 0.50–277 μM, respectively, with detection limits of 0.18 and 0.09 μM.

The pristine graphene produced by liquid exfoliation of graphite in mixed solvent and its application to determination of dopamine

Juan Zhang,Liao Xu,Bo Zhou,Yinyan Zhu,Xiaoqing Jiang

The pristine graphene can be easily prepared in isopropanol-water mixture with salts as assistant via liquid-phase exfoliation method. The concentration of graphene dispersion reaches as high as 0.565 mg/mL. The graphene film prepared by drop-casting method shows an excellent electrical conductivity (7.095 × 10 4  S/m). Furthermore, an electrochemical biosensor based on the pristine graphene shows high selectivity and sensitivity for the determination of dopamine. The linear detection range for dopamine is 2.5–1500 μM with detection limit of 1.5 μM. This method provides a potential process for preparing high-quality graphene ready-to-use in low-boiling point solvent.

Pristine-Graphene-Supported Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Self-Assembled from Glucaminium-Based Ionic Liquids as Metal-Free Catalyst for Oxygen Evolution

Ming Zhao,Tianhao Li,Lichao Jia,Huilin Li,Weiyong Yuan,Chang Ming Li

Graphical Hydrothermal self-assembly : Graphene-supported carbon with an ultrahigh N-doping level is controllably synthesized by facile and economical in situ self-assembly of a glucaminium-based ionic liquid on pristine graphene under hydrothermal conditions. As an electrocatalyst, it exhibits superior catalytic activity and durability in the oxygen evolution reaction. For the first time, graphene-supported N-doped carbon (G@NC) with a high degree of N doping was synthesized by in situ self-assembly of a glucaminium-based ionic liquid on pristine graphene under hydrothermal conditions. This 2D, metal-free nanohybrid exhibited much higher catalytic activity than most reported metal-free catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and even state-of-the-art Ir- and Ru-based catalysts because the high content of graphitic N greatly increased the number of OER-active sites, the pristine graphene significantly promoted the OER activity of the C sites adjacent to the graphitic N atoms, and N-doped graphitic carbon remarkably enhanced the charge-transfer rate. This work not only creates a facile and economical approach to controllably fabricate pristine-graphene-supported carbon with a high N-doping level for the development of highly efficient metal-free OER catalysts but also provides insight into the mechanisms for both the in situ self-assembly and the high OER catalytic activity of G@NC.

Layer-by-layer chitosan-decorated pristine graphene on screen-printed electrodes by one-step electrodeposition for non-enzymatic hydrogen peroxide sensor

Qin Zhu,Bo Liang,Yu Cai,Qingpeng Cao,Tingting Tu,Bobo Huang,Lu Fang,Xuesong Ye

Layer-by-layer chitosan-decorated pristine graphene on screen-printed electrodes was achieved by one-step electrodeposition method and an enzyme-free hydrogen peroxide electrochemical biosensor was fabricated for its application. Negatively charged pristine graphene absorbed with positively charged chitosan by electrostatic interactions was electrodeposited on the electrodes. The successful immobilization of pristine graphene was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electrochemical characterizations. The graphene-chitosan volume ratio and cyclic voltammetry scan cycles during the electrodeposition process were optimized. The resulting hydrogen peroxide biosensors showed a 178 times improved sensitivity and exhibited two wide linear detection ranges from 20 μM to 20 mM and from 20 mM to 60 mM. The biosensors also showed a good reproducibility, stability, selectivity and could be used in real samples detection. The superior electrochemical performance of graphene-chitosan was attributed to the preservation of excellent properties of pristine graphene, and the formation of layer-by-layer structure with high surface area. The proposed strategy of direct immobilization of pristine graphene can be extended for the immobilization of other nanomaterials and biomolecules.

Smart Hybridization of TiO2 Nanorods and Fe3O4 Nanoparticles with Pristine Graphene Nanosheets: Hierarchically Nanoengineered Ternary Heterostructures for High-Rate Lithium Storage

Long Pan,Xiao-Dong Zhu,Xu-Ming Xie,Yi-Tao Liu

Today, the ever-increasing demand for large-size power tools has provoked worldwide competition in developing lithium-ion batteries having higher energy and power densities. In this context, advanced anode materials are being extensively pursued, among which TiO 2 is particularly promising owing to its high safety, excellent cost and environmental performances, and high cycle stability. However, TiO 2 is faced with two detrimental deficiencies, that is, extremely low theoretical capacity and conductivity. Herein, a smart hybridization strategy is proposed for the hierarchical co-assembly of TiO 2 nanorods and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles on pristine graphene nanosheets, aiming to simultaneously address the capacity and conductivity deficiencies of TiO 2 by coupling it with high-capacity (Fe 3 O 4 ) and high-conductivity (pristine graphene) components. The resulting novel, multifunctional ternary heterostructures effectively integrate the intriguing functionalities of the three building blocks: TiO 2 as the major active material can adequately retain such merits as high safety and cycle stability, Fe 3 O 4 as the auxiliary active material can contribute extraordinarily high capacities, and pristine graphene as the conductive dopant can guarantee sufficient percolation pathways. Benefiting from a remarkable synergy, the ternary heterostructures deliver superior reversible capacities and rate capabilities, thus casting new light on developing next-generation, high-performance anode materials.

Diethylenetriamine-mediated self-assembly of three-dimensional hierarchical nanoporous CoP nanoflowers/pristine graphene interconnected networks as efficient electrocatalysts toward hydrogen evolution

Xiuling Fan,Xiaoyan Wang,Weiyong Yuan,Chang Ming Li

Highly active, durable, and low-cost hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts are critical for large-scale energy storage in the form of hydrogen through water splitting but their fabrication presents great challenges. Herein we report the synthesis of a novel 3D hierarchical nanoporous CoP nanoflowers/pristine graphene interconnected network structure via diethylenetriamine (DETA)-mediated self-assembly, in which DETA promoted the uniform dispersion of graphene and the nucleation of the CoP precursor on graphene, the seed aggregation facilitated the formation of nanoflowers and a 3D network, and the gas release during the low-temperature phosphidation produced nanopores inside the nanoflowers. This nanoarchitecture shows an onset potential of −0.014 V, an overpotential of 98.1 mV to achieve 10 mA cm−2, a Tafel slope of 40.9 mV dec−1, and an exchange current density of 0.119 mA cm−2. The onset overpotential, overpotential to achieve 10 mA cm−2, and Tafel slope are all among the lowest reported for non-noble metal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts, and the exchange current density also compares favorably to those of most reported HER catalysts. In addition, the catalyst exhibits excellent durability with negligible loss in current density after 2000 cyclic voltammetry (CV) cycles (+0.01 to −0.17 V vs. the RHE, at a scan rate of 100 mV s−1) or 23.5 h of chronoamperometric measurement at an overpotential of 98.1 mV, and a high faradaic efficiency of close to 100%. This work not only creates a high-performance and inexpensive HER electrocatalyst by utilizing the great advantages of 3D hierarchically nanostructured networks, but also develops a facile and economical strategy for the self-assembly of hierarchical nanostructures and offers scientific insight into its mechanism.

Self-assembled ultrasmall mixed Co–W phosphide nanoparticles on pristine graphene with remarkable synergistic effects as highly efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution

Xiaoyan Wang,Jia Bo Le,Yang Fei,Ruiqin Gao,Maoxiang Jing,Weiyong Yuan,Chang Ming Li

In situ mixing of transition metal phosphides (TMPs), especially those with dissimilar metals, in ultrasmall spaces and assembling them on nanoscale supports for remarkably enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity are rather challenging. We have fabricated pristine graphenesupported ultrasmall, highly dispersed, and high-density Co–W–P nanoparticles (NPs) via phosphotungstic acid-mediated self-assembly. This nanohybrid exhibits outstanding activity with all of the onset overpotential, overpotential (10 mA cm−2), Tafel slope, and exchange current density in both 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1 M KOH superior to those of most reported non-noble-metal-based catalysts and excellent durability showing negligible current change after 24 h chronoamperometric measurement and after 2000 CV cycles. The superior catalytic performance is ascribed to in situ intimately grown Co–W–P NPs with ultrasmall sizes and high dispersion greatly promoting electron transfer, ultrasmall and well-dispersed Co–W–P NPs on graphene providing numerous electrochemically accessible active sites, and synergistic interaction between WP2 and CoP significantly enhancing intrinsic activity. This work not only develops a facile and economical strategy to synthesize pristine graphene supported mixed phosphides of dissimilar transition metals as low-cost and high-performance HER electrocatalysts, but sheds light on synergistic effects between TMPs for high activity and self-assembly mechanisms toward the synthesis of various unique nanohybrids.
