Roxarsone (ROX) as an organoarsenic feed additive has been widely used in livestock breeding and poultry industry, but ROX can degrade into highly toxic inorganic arsenic species in natural environments to threaten to the environment and human health. Therefore, there is a considerable interest in developing convenient, selective and sensitive methods for the detection of ROX in livestock breeding and poultry industry. In this work, a fluorescent molecularly imprinted polymer (MIPs) probe based on amino-modified Mn-ZnS quantum dots (QDs) has been developed by sol–gel polymerization for specific recognition of ROX. The synthesized MIPs-coated Mn-ZnS QDs (MIPs@Mn-ZnS QDs) have highly selective recognition sites to ROX because there are multi-interactions among the template ROX, functional monomer phenyltrimethoxysilane and the amino-functionalized QDs such as the π–π conjugating effect, hydrogen bonds. Under the optimal conditions, an obvious fluorescence quenching was observed when ROX was added to the solution, and the quenching mechanism could be explained as the photo-induced electron transfer. The MIPs@Mn-ZnS QDs sensor exhibited sensitive response to ROX in the linear range from 3.75×10−8M to 6.25×10−7M (R2= 0.9985) and the limit of detection down to 4.34 nM. Moreover, the fluorescence probe has been applied to the quantitative detection of ROX in feed samples, and the recovery was in the range of 91.9% to 108.0%. The work demonstrated that the prepared MIPs@Mn-ZnS QDs probe has a good potential for rapid and sensitive determination of ROX in complicated samples.

To eliminate environmental risk that induced from organoarsenic feed additive ROX, and enhance special selectivity and recognizability of this micro-polluted aromatic organoarsenicals compound in complex aqueous as well. Novel core-shell magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) were successfully synthesized through the surface imprinting technology , which circumvented the drawbacks of traditional method such as the deep embedding of the imprinting sites and incomplete elution of the target molecule. Owing to its imprinting effect, the obtained MMIPs displayed excellent behavior and performance for ROX removal compared with magnetic non-imprinted polymers (MNIPs), the binding isotherms of ROX for both MMIPs and MNIPs were better fitted by Langmuir model, and two types of binding sites (specific and non-specific adsorption sites) existed on the surface of MMIPs. The removal efficiency of ROX by MMIPs remained unchanged along with a broad pH range (3.0–10.0), whereas pH seriously affected the ROX removal efficiency of MNIPs. The better uptake of ROX by MMIPs co-existed with competitive substances and two other organic/inorganic arsenic compounds ( p -ASA/As(V)) confirmed the high binding selectivity and special recognizability for its target pollutant. Finally, the application in different spiked real water samples and continuous flow tests further demonstrated MMIPs were the promising candidates and of the potential application future to selectively remove this trace pollutant in different water bodies.

Roxarsone (3-nitro-4-hydroxyphenylarsonic acid, Rox(V)), an extensively used organoarsenical feed additive, enters soils through the application of Rox(V)-containing manure and further degrades to highly toxic arsenicals. Microplastics , as emerging contaminants , are also frequently detected in soils. However, the effects of microplastics on soil Rox(V) degradation are unknown. A microcosm experiment was conducted to investigate soil Rox(V) degradation responses to polyethylene (PE) microplastics and the underlying mechanisms. PE microplastics inhibited soil Rox(V) degradation, with the main products being 3-amino-4-hydroxyphenylarsonic acid [3-AHPAA(V)], N -acetyl-4-hydroxy-m-arsanilic acid [N-AHPAA(V)], arsenate [As(V)], and arsenite [As(III)]. This inhibition was likely driven by the decline in soil pH by PE microplastic addition, which may directly enhance Rox(V) sorption in soils. The decreased soil pH further suppressed the nfnB gene related to nitroreduction of Rox(V) to 3-AHPAA(V) and nhoA gene associated with acetylation of 3-AHPAA(V) to N-AHPAA(V), accompanied by a decrease in the relative abundance of possible Rox(V)-degrading bacteria (e.g., Pseudomonadales), although the diversity, composition, network complexity, and assembly of soil bacterial communities were largely influenced by Rox(V) rather than PE microplastics. Our study emphasizes microplastic-induced inhibition of Rox(V) degradation in soils and the need to consider the role of microplastics in better risk assessment and remediation of Rox(V)-contaminated soils.

Zero-valent iron (ZVI) can enhance anaerobic digestion , and has great potential to alleviate/eliminate methanogenesis inhibition. Little is known about the feasibility of utilizing ZVI to alleviate methanogenesis inhibition that is caused by typical animal feed additive roxarsone in livestock wastewater. In this study, the role of ZVI on alleviating roxarsone-induced methanogenic inhibition and its mechanisms were investigated. With the increase of roxarsone concentration from 5 to 50 mg/L, the inhibition of methanogenesis increased from 3.0% to 65.7%. This inhibition was alleviated by 80.7% and 57.2% when 1.0 and 10.0 g/L ZVI were added, respectively. Due to ZVI addition, an efficient arsenic immobilization onto ZVI (45.4–85.8%) was achieved mainly through the formation of FeAsO 4 precipitate and adsorption by ZVI. Under the function of ZVI, hydrogenotrophic methanogenic activity was obviously restored. The microbial community analysis indicates that the ZVI-regulated alleviation on the methanogenesis inhibition was attributed to the enrichment of Methanobacterium and Methanosarcina . The findings from this study demonstrate that ZVI addition is an effective way for treatment of organoarsenic-contaminated wastewater.

Solar light driven organoarsenicals degradation and simultaneous inorganic arsenic immobilization with naturally abundant hematite is very promising for organoarsenicals remediation, but suffers from the fast electron-hole charge recombination of hematite. Herein, we report that oxalate, widely existed in soil and water environments, can greatly enhance the photocatalytic molecular oxygen activation of hematite to degrade a typical organoarsenical roxarsone and immobilize the resulted inorganic arsenic. It was found that oxalate could chelate with surface Fe(III) of hematite to generate plenty of •OH via a surface Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle mediated oxygen molecular activation process under a simulated solar light, and thus induced 85.1% of roxarsone transformation into inorganic arsenic species, mainly As(V), within 6 h. The generated As(V) could be further adsorbed on hematite surface with prolonging the reaction time to 24 h in dark, avoiding secondary pollution. More importantly, hematite was reusable for the simulated solar light driven roxarsone degradation and As(V) immobilization in the presence of oxalate. This study offers a green and effective strategy for organoarsenicals remediation, and also sheds light on the environmental effects of iron oxides and oxalate.

The eco-risk of roxarsone (ROX) was evaluated using multiple responses of earthworm biomarkers under different ROX concentrations for 28 d. With the increasing total arsenic accumulation (TAs-E), biological responses in earthworm generally showed a two-stage changes of homeostasis dysregulation and dose-dependent alterations. At the early periods, ROX stress increased the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) in a similar manner, and apparently disrupted mitochondrial calcium ([Ca 2+ ] m ). But earthworms regulated their mitochondrial and redox homeostasis through stable mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and increase of ATP level, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). After 14 d, the positively correlated mitochondrial effects of ROS, [Ca 2+ ] m , MMP and ATP were related to the behavioral inhibition of burrow length, depth and reuse rate as well as antioxidant up-regulation of Nrf2, HO-1, sod1 and cat . These results contributed possible biomarkers from the dose-dependent relationship between mitochondrial, antioxidant and behavioral responses. Multiple biological detection in earthworms can better reflect the sub-chronic ecotoxicity of phenylarsenic pollutants in soil.

Organoarsenical contaminants such as roxarsone (ROX) pose a persistent challenge in water treatment because oxidative degradation of the parent compound inevitably generates inorganic arsenic (iAs), whereas adsorption-based processes immobilize iAs without removing the organoarsenical precursor. As a result, arsenic is redistributed among species rather than eliminated, and its overall fate during transformation and immobilization remains poorly quantified. Here, we develop a Co-doped LaOCl catalyst (Co 0.5 LOC) that enables coupled oxidative transformation and arsenic immobilization under peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation via spatially integrated Co and La sites. Critically, a complete time-resolved arsenic mass balance is achieved throughout the reaction, with total arsenic recovery maintained at 100 ± 2%, thereby directly linking ROX degradation, iAs formation, and final immobilization. The catalyst exhibits a pseudo-first-order ROX degradation rate of 0.2935 min −1 , 2.2-fold higher than pristine LaOCl, with >96% removal across pH 5–9 and >81% activity retention after five cycles. Mechanistic analysis identifies surface-confined singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) as the dominant reactive species, providing strong resistance to chloride ions and natural organic matter. A synergy index of 6.72 quantifies non-additive oxidation–adsorption coupling. Total organic carbon monitoring reveals that structural transformation substantially exceeds mineralization, with approximately 26% of the initial carbon remaining at 120 min; LC-HRMS tentatively identifies four aromatic intermediates in the residual fraction, consistent with the limited ring-opening capability of surface-confined 1 O 2 . Overall, this work establishes a unified strategy for organoarsenic remediation by integrating oxidative destruction with quantitative arsenic sequestration, enabling comprehensive contaminant fate accountability in advanced water treatment systems.

Roxarsone (ROX), a widely used organic arsenic feed additive, enters paddy soils through animal manure fertilizer, posing serious risks to environmental and human health. However, the underlying mechanisms of ROX stabilization, particularly the role of soil cultivation duration, remain poorly understood. Here, we compared ROX stabilization in new paddy soil (NPS, 10-year cultivation) and old paddy soil (OPS, 100-year cultivation). NPS exhibited higher ROX stabilization ability than OPS, as evidenced by a 1.5-fold higher adsorption rate constant, a 28-fold higher organic carbon-normalized partition coefficient (K oc ) and retention of 13-fold more arsenic in the residual fraction (non-extractable arsenic). The improved adsorption and stability in NPS were mainly due to complex formation between nitrogen-rich organic matter and Fe(II). In-situ spectroscopic and electrochemical analyses revealed that the complex promote ROX fixation by forming a Fe(II)-ROX-N ternary configuration. This structure was derived from the bidentate binuclear binding of As(V) with iron sites and deprotonated N-containing functional groups. These findings provided mechanistic insights into organic arsenic adsorption in soils and offered theoretical guidance for optimizing soil composition management strategies.

In this study, the effect of Mn(II) on the roxarsone (ROX) removal efficiency by iron oxide was systematically investigated. ROX removed by iron oxide obeyed pseudo-second-order non-linear kinetic model with the addition of Mn(II), and the removal rate constant normalized by specific surface area was calculated to be 4.5 × 10 −3 g m −2 h −1 , which was 4.8 times than that in the absence of Mn(II). Based on a series of experimental and characterization results, we found that Mn(II) could not be oxidized to Mn(III) in the presence of iron oxide, and the enhanced ROX removal process was attributed to the promoted ROX adsorption process. Further zeta potential results suggested that the addition of Mn(II) increased the isoelectric point of iron oxide from 5.3 to 7.5, which provided positive adsorption site favoring adsorption process of the negative charged arsenic functional group in ROX. This investigation provided fundamental understanding for the effect of Mn(II) on the removal efficiency of ROX by iron oxide.

Roxarsone (3-nitro-4-hydroxyphenylarsenic acid, ROX) is easily converted into highly toxic inorganic arsenic compounds, therefore, the development of highly efficient adsorbents for the removal of ROX from wastewater is necessary but remains challenging. In this study, NH 2 -MIL-101 (Fe) was synthesised and modified with TPA-CHO (4-(N, N-diphenylamine) benzaldehyde) to obtain TPA-MIL-101(Fe) with triphenylamine functionalised groups. The modified TPA-MIL-101(Fe) exhibits the very high adsorption capacity (728.2 mg g −1 ) and fast adsorption equilibrium (2 h). The TPA-MIL-101(Fe) showed excellent selectivity, and the adsorption efficiency hardly decreased in the presence of competing ions (Cl − , NO 3 − , SO 4 2− ). The TPA-MIL-101(Fe) showed good adsorption performance for ROX at pH 3–13, with the best performance at pH = 9. In addition, TPA-MIL-101(Fe) was able to remove trace amounts of ROX from actual water samples (<5 mg L −1 ) with an efficiency of 99.46 %, and the remaining ROX content meets the international drinking water standards of the World Health Organization (29 μg L −1 ). The mechanism studies have shown that the Fe-O-As coordination and the π-π stacking interaction between TPA-MIL-101(Fe) and ROX greatly enhance its adsorption performance. In conclusion, this work provides a promising material for effective removal of ROX from the environmental water.

Roxarsone (ROX), a feed additive widely used worldwide, was degraded into toxic products in the natural environment. Advanced oxidation processes (AOP) based on nonradicals used for the degradation of ROX had not been reported. Herein, resorcinol–formaldehyde resins (RFs) produced by a simple high-temperature hydrothermal method had efficient photocatalytic properties to produce H 2 O 2 . FeOOH quantum dots (QDs) act as the activator and electron shuttle to decompose H 2 O 2 to produce 1 O 2 . RFs decorated with FeOOH quantum dots (RFs-Fe QDs ) were successfully synthesized and completely remove ROX with a rate of 0.03649 min −1 under simulated sunlight. Otherwise, the 99.42% arsenic-containing portion that shed from Roxarsone was eventually converted to As(V) and in-situ adsorbed by FeOOH quantum dots. The experiment data showed that ·OH, O 2 ·− and 1 O 2 participated in the degradation and 1 O 2 was the dominant reactive species. Moreover, the systems have excellent reusability and stability over a wide pH range. This study provided a new strategy for photocatalytic production of 1 O 2 to remove the ROX from water.

The organoarsenical feed additive roxarsone (ROX) is a ubiquitous threat due to the unpredictable levels of arsenic (As) released by soil bacteria. The earthworms representing soil fauna communities provide hotspots for As biotransformation genes (ABGs). Nonetheless, the role of gut bacteria in this regard is unclear. In this study, the changes in As speciation, bacterial ABGs, and communities were analyzed in a ROX-contaminated soil (50 mg/kg As in ROX form) containing the earthworm Eisenia feotida . (RE vs. R treatment). After 56 d, earthworms reduced the levels of both ROX and total As by 59 % and 17 %, respectively. The available As content was 10 % lower in the RE than in R treatment. Under ROX stress, the total ABG abundance was upregulated in both earthworm gut and soil, with synergistic effects observed following RE treatment. Besides, the enrichment of arsM and arsB genes in earthworm gut suggested that gut bacteria may facilitate As removal by enhancing As methylation and transport function in soil. However, the bacteria carrying ABGs were not associated with the ABG abundance in earthworm gut indicating the unique strategies of earthworm gut bacteria compared with soil bacteria due to different microenvironments. Based on a well-fit structural equation model (P = 0.120), we concluded that gut bacteria indirectly contribute to ROX transformation and As detoxification by modifying soil ABGs. The positive findings of earthworm-induced ROX transformation shed light on the role of As biomonitoring and bioremediation in organoarsenical-contaminated environments.
