Sulfate radical (SO4˙−) based oxidation technologies have been widely used in the remediation of antibiotic-containing wastewater. Activated persulfates are efficient reagents for achieving SO4˙−, but the storage and transportation of concentrated persulfates present associated safety issues. In this study, bisulfite (BS) was used as an alternative precursor for replacing persulfates, and a simple advanced oxidation system (Fe3+/BS) for generating SO4˙− and hydroxyl radical (HO˙) was formulated and evaluated for removing sulfamethoxazole (SMX) from contaminated water. The initial pH, dosages of Fe3+ and BS, as well as the water matrix were investigated to improve the SMX degradation. The results indicated that 1 μmol L−1 SMX was completely removed within 5 min at optimum initial pH of 4.0, Fe3+ dosage of 10 μmol L−1, BS dosage of 100 μmol L−1 and temperature of 25 °C. The presence of HCO3− and natural organic matter (NOM) showed obviously negative effects on SMX degradation, while Cu2+ could slightly promote the degradation of SMX if its concentration was in an appropriate range (∼1 μmol L−1). Scavenger quenching experiments confirmed the presence of SO4˙− and HO˙, which resulted in efficient SMX degradation in the Fe3+/BS system. During the radical chain reactions, Fe2+ and Fe3+ could be converted into each other to form self-circulation in this system. The degradation pathway of SMX by Fe3+/BS was proposed including hydroxylation and bond cleavage.

Some uses of biochar/H 2 O 2 in the removal of organic pollutants from sewage have made the advanced oxidation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products by modified biochar possible. However, little is known about the performance of modified biochar and the mechanism of this process. Herein, the activation of H 2 O 2 by Fe-impregnated biochar (FBC, produced from maize straw, wheat straw and peanut shell) was studied, and the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was specifically investigated. The results show that Fe-impregnated biochar had the ability to activate H 2 O 2 and degrade SMX and its performance was better than that of the original biochar. With the increase of pyrolysis temperature from 350 °C to 700 °C, Fe-impregnated maize straw (1 g/L) enhanced the decomposition of H 2 O 2 (3 mM) from 66% to 99% within 2 h. The degradation of SMX (10 μM) by FM700/H 2 O 2 within 2 h reached 100%, which was approximately 3 times of that of the original biochar. The mechanism of activation-degradation was elucidated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The results show that the interaction of H 2 O 2 with C-OH promoted the generation of HO and that HO and non-radical sites jointly attacked SMX to degrade it. Impregnation with Fe not only increased the specific surface area of the biochar but also provided more active sites to activate H 2 O 2 and degrade SMX.

A novel extraction method was established to determine the water-extractable (available) content of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in soil. The SMX imprinted polymers (MIPs) were synthesised and the performance was evaluated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and binding experiments. Results showed that the MIPs exhibited good selectivity for SMX, so the MIPs were applied as a sorbent. SMX in soil was extracted by water, sorbed from the extract to MIPs and analysed with a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) after its desorption from MIPs. Meanwhile, the classic organic solvent extraction was employed to measure the total SMX content in soil. Results showed that when SMX level in spiked soils varying from 1.0–500 μg kg−1, the observed recoveries of available SMX contents ranged from 63.27 ± 3.11% to 82.11 ± 2.77% (n = 3), while the total SMX varied between 89.59 ± 1.65% and 97.64 ± 3.92% (n = 3). The detection limit of the developed method for SMX in soils was 0.05 μg kg−1. Available SMX contents in five field soil samples ranged from 0.13 to 4.14 μg kg−1, which were only 0.35–25.40% of the respective total SMX contents. Results from this study manifest the importance of the extents of SMX immobilisation with different soils for assessing SMX's ecological and human health risks.

Despite extensive investigation on the toxicity of microplastics (MPs), an emerging global concern, little is known about the combined toxicity of MPs and co-occurring pollutants in aquatic environments. In this study, the combined toxicity of polystyrene MPs and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) antibiotics was explored in zebrafish embryos in terms of the developmental, physiological, and endocrine toxicities. Exposure to PS and SMZ induced mortality (rate: 25.0 ± 7.5%) and malformation (rate: 20~35%) at multiple regions and stages of zebrafish development. Physiological toxicity was also induced as shown by the significant decrease in fetal movement (by 31.1~37.0%) and swimming frequency (by 26.9~36.8%) and the increase in heartbeat rate (by 19.0~20.9%). Finally, PS and SMZ exposure also induced extensive endocrine toxicities in zebrafish as confirmed by increases in various biomarkers including vitellogenin, 17β-estradiol, testosterone, and triiodothyronine. The combination index showed that antagonistic effects were present between PS and SMZ toxicity, which slightly decreased their combined toxicity. This study aims to further understand the combined toxicity of MPs and co-occurring pollutants in aquatic environments.

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) contamination in large quantities of wastewater can cause potential environmental problems. Due to difficulty in degrading SMX by natural processes, it is necessary to develop a novel technology to solve this problem. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been identified as methods with a high potential to treat recalcitrant organic pollutants. The nanoscale schwertmannite (nano-SWT) was prepared with an indoor-temperature synthesis method facilitated by polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). In this study, we performed a reaction of the nano-SWT materials with Fenton-like catalysts for SMX degradation in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) media. The findings showed that the nano-SWT prepared by addition of 0.1 g·L−1PVP (nano-SWT-n,n= 0.1) could degrade 92.5% of the SMX within 90 min at indoor temperature, which was due to the nano-SWT providing abundant reaction sites at the solid/solution interfaces. Additionally, SMX could be highly mineralized with 75% TOC removal and H2O2was efficiently utilized during the nano-SWT/H2O2process. In addition, after six cycles of Fenton-like degradation, the nano-SWT remained stable and reusable as a Fenton-like catalyst for SMX degradation. The nano-SWT performed well as a catalyst for SMX degradation. Additionally, this work provides a feasible environmental purification approach for the efficient degradation of SMX through the use of nanoscale schwertmannite as a catalyst in heterogeneous Fenton-like systems.Keywords:Fenton-like;sulfamethoxazole;nanoscale schwertmannite;degradation

In the electrocatalytic (EC) degradation process, low current efficiency, mineralization efficiency, and mass transfer efficiency have limited its widespread application. To overcome these limitations, spherical particle electrodes (LZT–SO) with high electrocatalytic activity were simply prepared by using lead–zinc tailings (LZT) as catalytically active substances and soil (SO) from riverbeds as the carrier. The LZT–SO electrode was introduced into an electrocatalytic (EC) reaction tank to establish a three-dimensional catalytic oxidation system (EC/LZT–SO). Compared with the EC (0.0118 min−1) and EC/SO (0.0271 min−1) systems, the EC/LZT–SO system exhibited a higher sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) degradation rate (0.0597 min−1). EPR analysis and free radical capture experiments confirmed that ·OH played a major role in the degradation process. SEM + EDS analysis confirmed that Fe and Mn metal oxides were the main active sites of the LZT–SO electrode. Under complex water conditions, the degradation efficiency of SMZ reached 94–100% within 70 min. Even after three cycles, the EC/LZT–SO system still maintained a high removal efficiency of 93.75% for SMZ, with only a slight decrease of 6.25%. Triple quadrupole liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (TEST) software were used to study the products after SMZ degradation and it was found that the products were almost harmless. This work will provide a new perspective for the “treat waste with waste and turn waste into treasure” approach, which can accelerate the development of recycling waste tailings.

Activation of peracetic acid (PAA) by Fe species is the attractive advanced oxidation processes for the removal of antibiotics. However, achieving optimal performance in many of these processes often requires acidic pH conditions , which impedes practical application. In this study, an iron electrocoagulation (EC) system was devised to for activate PAA and oxidate sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Under optimal conditions, the degradation of SMX by the EC/PAA system reached 96.2% within 15 min, with a pseudo-first order reaction constant of 0.241 min −1 , but only consuming 0.044 kW·h/m 3 . Interestingly, the EC/PAA system showed a high buffering capacity in the initial pH range of 4–8 to maintain the final pH of around 7. The quenching experiments revealed both free radical and non-free radical pathways involved in the oxidation of SMX in the EC/PAA system. Specifically, the active species , including •OH, organic radicals (CH 3 COO• and CH 3 COOO•) and 1 O 2 , contribute 86.77%, 5.53% and 7.70%, respectively. These findings suggest that the EC/PAA system has unique advantages and potential for the degradation of antibiotic organics such as SMX in aquatic environments due to its strong oxidative capacity, wide pH range and high buffering capacity.

Antibiotics, as typical emerging contaminants posing significant ecological risks, are frequently detected in global coastal environments. Their biotransformation in marine environments depends on the stress responses of functional microbial communities, while the underlying response mechanisms remain unclear. Through integrated metagenomic and metabolomic approaches, this study systematically investigated the structural and functional responses of marine microbial communities during the co-metabolic degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), a representative antibiotic. A marine microbial consortium was employed for SMX co-metabolism with alginate, prototypical marine natural organic matter, as the co-substrate. Results revealed that under SMX stress, the microbial community underwent a marked shift in OTU composition, alongside significant increases in richness and diversity. The dominant functional taxon Vibrionaceae exhibited a significant decrease in relative abundance from 97.0% to 82.7%, while Paracoccaceae with SMX degradation potential and other low-abundance (<0.01%) functional taxa were significantly enriched, collectively sustaining stable alginate metabolism and facilitating SMX co-metabolism. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed enhanced interspecies associations. Moreover, the functional profile of the microbial community was profoundly reshaped. Specifically, the microbial community activated adaptive responses, enhancing TCS activation, EPS and endospore production, flagellar motility and chemotaxis, antioxidant capacity and DNA repair, and antibiotic resistance, to mitigate the toxicity of SMX and its intermediates. Concurrently, metabolic strategies were altered via regulation of key pathways (e.g., carbohydrate metabolism and amino acid metabolism), which increased by 7.8% and 17.5% in relative abundance compared to the control, boosting energy supply and SMX-degrading enzyme synthesis to enable SMX co-metabolism. This study provides new insights into the response mechanisms of marine microbial communities to SMX stress and the ecological risk assessment of antibiotics in coastal waters. The coexistence and interaction of free metal cations in the environment can significantly affect the migration of organic pollutants, leading to varied effects depending on environmental conditions. However, the mechanisms affecting the adsorption of organic pollutants in the presence of metal ions remain poorly understood due to limited molecular-level studies. This study investigated the adsorption behavior of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) on montmorillonite (MT) at different pH values (1.6, 3.0, and 5.0) in the presence of three metal cations with different valences: Na + , Ca 2+ , and Cr 3+ . At pH 5.0, the adsorption of SMX by MT at pH 5.0 in Ca 2+ and Cr 3+ systems increased significantly—by 7.25 times and 47 times, respectively, compared to those at pH 1.6. In contrast, Na + had a less pronounced effect on SMX adsorption. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that as the pH value increases, the interaction between SMX, metal ions, and MT strengthens. Furthermore, the adsorption binding energy of SMX in the high-valence Cr 3+ system (− 94.51 kcal/mol) was significantly lower than in the low-valence Na + system (− 36.55 kcal/mol). As pH and cation valency increased, the bonding density of cation bridges also increased, leading to a more substantial enhancement in SMX adsorption. This study provides insights into the adsorption mechanism of SMX on MT in the presence of metal cations, contributing valuable understanding of the environmental behavior of organic pollutants under varying cationic conditions.

A novel flow injection chemiluminescence (FI-CL) sensor for the determination of sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) was established which using chitosan/graphene oxide-molecularly imprinted polymers (CG-MIP) as recognition element. The SMZ-CG-MIP was synthesized in acetone as solvent and chitosan/graphene oxide for support, using acrylamide as functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as cross-linker and 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator. The CG-MIP showed satisfactory recognition capacity for the SMZ. Then the synthesized CG-MIP was employed as recognition by packing into a lab-made tube connected in FI-CL analyzer to establish a novel CL sensor respectively. The CL intensity responded linearly to the concentration of SMZ in the range 1.0 × 10 −7 mol/L to 2.3 × 10 −3 mol/L with a detection limit of 2.9 × 10 −8 mol/L (3 σ ), which is lower. The relative standard deviation for the determination of 4.0 × 10 −4 mol/L of SMZ was 1.92% ( n = 11). The sensor is reusable and has a great improvement in sensitivity and selectivity for CL analysis which applied to the determination of SMZ in drug samples.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), known for their severe ecological risks, are frequently detected in coastal waters worldwide. However, the environmental fate in marine systems remains poorly understood. This study investigated the co-metabolic degradation mechanism of a typical PPCP, sulfamethoxazole (SMX), by a marine consortium SAB using alginate—a natural organic matter—as a co-substrate, aiming to elucidate the biodegradation process of PPCPs in actual marine environments. An integrated approach, including metagenomic sequencing (with binning), RT-qPCR, molecular docking, metabolic modeling, and metabolomics, was employed. Results demonstrated that the SAB consortium efficiently degraded SMX at concentrations from 50 μg/L to 10 mg/L, achieving over 96% removal within 24 h. SMX degradation was achieved through metabolic cross-feeding of alginate by key species within the SAB consortium. Specifically, alginate is initially converted by Vibrio into the central metabolite 2-keto-3-deoxy-D-gluconate (KDG). KDG is subsequently metabolized by Tritonibacter , Halopseudomonas , and Vibrio , generating key metabolites such as acetyl-CoA, serine, cysteine, and guanine. These metabolites support microbial growth and induce production of SMX-degrading enzymes, such as threonine dehydratase, cysteine S-conjugate β-lyase, and guanine deaminase, leading to SMX cleavage and mineralization. Additionally, acetyl-CoA provides acetyl groups for arylamine N-acetyltransferase-mediated SMX acetylation. These processes collectively drive the co-metabolic degradation of SMX. Overall, this study provides critical insights into PPCPs' fate in marine environments.

Conventional electrochemical activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) is not very cost-effective and practical by the excessive input of energy. The electricity generated by photosynthetic microalgae fuel cells (MFCs) is utilized to activate PMS, which would achieve the combination of green bioelectricity and advanced oxidation processes for sustainable pollutants degradation. In this study, a novel dual-chamber of MFCs was constructed by using microalgae as anode electron donor and PMS as cathode electron acceptor, which was operating under both close-circuit and open-circuit conditions. Under close-circuit condition, 1–12 mM PMS in cathode was successfully in situ activated, where 32.00%–99.83% of SMX was removed within 24 h, which was about 1.21–1.78 times of that in the open-circuit of MFCs. Meanwhile, a significant increase in bioelectricity generation in MFCs was observed after the accumulation of microalgae biomass (4.65–5.37 mg/L), which was attributed to the efficient electron separation and transfer. Furthermore, the electrochemical analysis demonstrated that SMX or its products were functioned as electronic shuttles, facilitating the electrochemical reaction and altering the electrical capacitance. The quenching experiments and voltage output results reflected that complex active radical (SO 4 ⋅ - , ⋅OH, and 1 O 2 ) were involved in SMX removal. Seven degradation products of SMX were detected and S–N bond cleavage was the main degradation pathway. Predicted toxicity values calculated by ECOSAR program showed that all the products were less toxic or nontoxic. Finally, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the O and N atoms on SMX were more susceptible to electrophilic reactions, which were more vulnerable to be attacked by reactive species. This study provided new insights into the activation of PMS by bioelectricity for SMX degradation, proposing the mechanisms for PMS activation and degradation sites of SMX.
