The excessive levels of neonicotinoid insecticides, particularly thiacloprid (THI), in the environment have become a significant threat to ecosystems. This study investigates the catalytic degradation of THI using pinewood biochar (PBC), zero-valent iron (ZVI), and ZVI/PBC composite, with a particular focus on the reaction activity modulation mediated by organic acids (humic acid: HA and oxalic acid: OA). Reductive dechlorination dominated THI degradation as observed by Cl−release kinetics. Compared to HA (39.73%), the OA (73.44%) addition markedly increased the THI removal efficiency by ZVI/PBC, which alone has a lower removal efficacy, i.e., 37.29%. The increase in the THI removal rate was attributed to its enhanced electron transfer capacity. As confirmed by electrochemical characterization, the addition of organic acids promotes electron transfer between THI and catalysts (ZVI, PBC, or ZVI/PBC), thereby improving the removal efficiency of THI. XRD/XPS analyses elucidated that OA preferentially converted passivating Fe2O3/Fe3O4on ZVI/PBC to reactive FeOOH and formed electron-conductive Fe–COO bonds, thereby suppressing oxide layer formation. PBC amplified these effects through ZVI dispersion and electron shuttling, reducing aggregation-induced activity loss. These findings provide a mechanistic framework for optimizing ligand-engineered iron composites, offering practical strategies to enhance pesticide remediation efficiency in organic acid-rich environmental systems.

AS a low-cost and high-performance catalyst, spinel cobalt oxide (Co3O4) has two different catalytic active sites (tetrahedral Co2+ and octahedral Co3+) to drive the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) through Co2+/Co3+ redox cycle. Tuning Co2+/Co3+ atomic ratio on the surface of Co3O4 for the construction of a synergy in the Co2+/Co3+ redox cycle might be an effective way to further boost PMS activation performance of Co3O4 catalyst. Herein, we suggested a metal-doping strategy to regulate Co2+/Co3+ atomic ratio of Co3O4 by partially substituting Co2+ with inert Mg2+ and formed a series of Mg doped Co3O4 (MCO) catalysts. Structural characterizations and experimental investigations demonstrated that Mg doping did not change Co3O4 host lattice and particle morphology, but could manipulate surface Co2+/Co3+ atomic ratio of Co3O4 for an improved PMS activation. The optimal MCO catalysts (MCO-0.2) with the suitable Co2+/Co3+ atomic ratios (1.13) exhibited the excellent thiacloprid (THIA) degradation performance through PMS activation, and the apparent degradation rate constant (0.2835 min−1) was highly outperformed that of pure Co3O4 (0.09555 min−1) and other similar cobalt-based catalysts. The optimal THIA degradation conditions might be: catalyst dose 100 mg L−1, PMS concentration 0.8 mM, pH 7 and THIA concentration 20 mg L−1. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) characterizations suggested SO4˙−, HO˙ and 1O2 were all involved in THIA degradation during the MCO-0.2/PMS process. Furthermore, the steady-state concentrations of these reactive species and their relative contributions to THIA degradation were also calculated by combining a kinetic model and a series of probe compound-based experiments. The results indicated that SO4˙− and HO˙ were generated at lower steady-state concentrations than that of 1O2, but they dominated THIA abatement during the MCO-0.2/PMS process. This study presented new insights into the construction of efficient PMS activator and a mechanistic understanding for PMS-mediated reaction.

The high efficient surface-enhanced Raman scatterring (SERS) methods to detect thiacloprid and imidacloprid were established using ZIF-8-wrapped Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) modified with β -cyclodextrin ( β -CD). The substrate of ZIF-8/ β -CD@AgNPs was characterized by ultraviolet visible spectra (UV–vis), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The interaction between the substrate and thiacloprid/imidacloprid was also explored. The optimum measurement conditions were obtained by response surface model based on single-factor experiments. Enhancement factors (EFs) of thiacloprid and imidacloprid were respectively 2.29 × 10 6 and 2.60 × 10 6 . A good linearity between the scattering intensity and the concentration of thiacloprid/imidacloprid within 3–1000 nmol L −1 /6–400 nmol L −1 was established. The interference experiments indicated that the methods had good selectivity . The SERS methods were successfully applied to detect thiacloprid and imidacloprid in several vegetables samples. The recoveries ranged from 95.5 % to 105 % (n = 5). The detection limits (LODs) (S/N = 3) for thiacloprid and imidacloprid were 1.50 and 0.83 nmol L −1 , respectively.

Neonicotinoids (NEOs) are the most widely used insecticides in the world and pose a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems. The combined use of free-floating aquatic plants and associated microorganisms has a tremendous potential for remediating water contaminated by pesticides. The aim of this study was to determine whether plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) could enhance the phytoremediation efficiency of duckweed (Lemna aequinoctialis) in NEO-contaminated water. A total of 18 different bacteria were isolated from pesticide-stressed agricultural soil. One of the isolates, Pseudomonas monteilii FC02, exhibited an excellent ability to promote duckweed growth and was selected for the NEO removal experiment. The influence of strain FC02 inoculation on the accumulation of three typical NEOs (dinotefuran, thiacloprid, and imidaclothiz) in plant tissues, the removal efficiency in water, and plant growth parameters were evaluated during the 14-day experimental period. The results showed that strain FC02 inoculation significantly (p < 0.05) increased plant biomass production and NEO accumulation in plant tissues. The maximum NEO removal efficiencies were observed in the inoculated duckweed treatment after 14 days, with 92.23, 87.75, and 96.42% for dinotefuran, thiacloprid, and imidaclothiz, respectively. This study offers a novel view on the bioremediation of NEOs in aquatic environments by a PGPB–duckweed partnership.

Cu 2 O/MIL(Fe/Cu) composite was fabricated via an in-situ Cu-bridging strategy to enhance interfacial synergistic effect of photo-Fenton catalysis for thiacloprid (TCL) degradation. Characterization results showed that: (1) Cu 2 O was proved to grow on the surface of MIL(Fe/Cu) in Cu 2 O/MIL(Fe/Cu) composite and display a high BET surface area of 1553 m 2 /g; (2) Cu 2 O/MIL(Fe/Cu) reduced band gap from 2.5 to 1.3 eV and extended absorption from UV to visible region; (3) Cu-bridge was proved to promote the intimate interface between Cu 2 O and MIL(Fe/Cu), which accelerated charge transferred and shortened the binding gap and the reaction pathway from photo-induced electrons to Fenton-generated radicals. As a result, this boosted the redox reaction of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and promoted the reversible degree of this catalytic redox ability of MIL(Fe). Catalytic performance exhibited that (1) Cu 2 O/MIL(Fe/Cu) showed a fast kinetics (2–40 times faster than the state-of-the-art catalysts) and ultra-high mineralization (82.3% within 80 min) for TCL degradation; (2) Cu 2 O/MIL(Fe/Cu) showed a promising cycling stability due to improved charge transfer ability that could protect Cu 2 O from photo-corrosion during photo-Fenton reaction; (3) The catalytic performance of Cu 2 O/MIL(Fe/Cu) was characterized and seven photocatalytic intermediates were identified by both HPLC/MS and Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy. The cyanoimino group in TCL was proved for the first time to be attacked primarily. Moreover, among all the detected intermediates, thiazolidin-2-amine (P6) was found to be the most stable intermediate to be degraded, and it can directly influence the TOC determination during photodegradation process.

A method is described for simultaneous voltammetric determination of the pesticides triazophos (TRS) and thiacloprid (THD). A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with a metal-organic framework (type UiO-66-NH 2 ) which has a large specific surface (1018 m 2 ·g −1 ) and contains large amounts of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions, with adsorption capacities of 230 and 271 mg·g −1 , respectively. The antigen-loaded particles were then bound to antibody, magnetically separated, and analyzed by square wave voltammetry to give signals for Cd(II) and Pb(II) at −0.82 and − 0.56 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) for TRS and THD, respectively. Under optimized conditions, the method has a wide linear range (0.2–750 ng·mL −1 ) and low detection limits (0.07 and 0.1 ng·mL −1 at a S/N of 3 for TRS and THD, respectively). It is perceived that this assay represents a useful tool for simultaneous determination of multiple pesticide residues. The method has a wide scope in that may be extended to monitoring of other small organic pollutants by changing the types of metal ions and by using other antibodies.
Schematic presentation of an amino-modified metal-organic framework (type UiO-66-NH 2 ) loaded with Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions for simultaneous electrochemical immunosensing of triazophos (TRS) and thiacloprid (THD). It is based on the fabrication of antigen (Ab)-immobilized UiO-66-NH 2 -based signal tags (a), and of an antibody (Ab)-immobilized magnetic bead (MB-COOH)-based capture probes (b).

Thiacloprid (THI) is a synthetic insecticide, the misuse is targeted chiefly to control aphid pest species in orchards and vegetables. Melatonin (MET) is a hormone that plays crucial physiological roles in anti-inflammatory capacities of fish. We explored the function of MET (100 μM) to mitigate the toxicity induced by THI (20 μM) in lymphocytes. Our results indicate that THI led to a notable rise in lymphocyte mortality. Lymphocytes exposed to THI exhibited a heightened incidence of pyroptosis, accompanied by upregulation in expression associated with pyroptosis (NLRP3, GSDMEA, and IL-18). Meanwhile, THI exposure led to a decrease in lymphocyte mitochondrial membrane potential, an increase in mtROS levels, and a reduction in intracellular ATP, DNA, and NADPH/NADP+ levels, indicating an imbalance in the mitochondrial metabolism within the lymphocytes. Additionally, these effects were reversed by MET treatment, where MitoQ treatment showed that the suppression of mtROS reduced the lymphocyte pyroptosis caused by THI via the mtROS/cGAS-STING/NF-κB axis. Importantly, MET provided defense against the immunotoxic impacts of THI by ameliorating pyroptosis and enhancing anti-inflammatory capability via the mtROS/cGAS-STING/NF-κB axis. Our research potentiates the safeguarding of cultured fish from biological hazards caused by THI and highlights the valuable application of MET in common carp.
