Sustainable phosphorus (P) recovery from sewage sludge is crucial to reconciling the simultaneous shortage and excess of P. In this study, magnetic biochar (MBC) was synthesized and innovatively applied to enhance P recovery as vivianite. The effects of anaerobic digestion (AD) time, hydrothermal (HT) pretreatment temperature and MBC dose on vivianite formation were investigated using batch experiments and a modified sequential P extraction protocol. The P fractionation results showed that the concentration of pure vivianite-bound P (Fe(II)-P) reached a maximum on the 10th day of AD treatment, and then declined sharply due to vivianite oxidation and P limitation. HT pretreatment operated at relatively high temperatures (135 and 185 °C) reduced vivianite formation; this negative effect of HT pretreatment was partially compensated by MBC supplementation. The proportion of Fe(II)-P in the solid phase of sludge was substantially raised up to 57.1% from 8.3~17.4% with an increasing dose of MBC from 0 to 12.5 g/L, indicating that MBC had a markedly enhanced effect on vivianite formation; this could be attributed to the MBC-improved Fe(II) production, as evidenced by the elevated proportion of Fe(II) in Fe2p XPS spectra and the increased ratio of Fe(II)-P to oxidized vivianite-bound P (Fe(III)-P) in the sludge after MBC supplementation. MBC addition also decreased the proportion of water-extractable P by sorption and promoted organic P decomposition, which further facilitated vivianite production. These findings reveal a new strategy for enhancing P recovery from HT-pretreated AD sludge. Keywords:vivianite;sewage sludge;P recovery;biochar;HT-AD

Vivianite crystallization has been regarded as a suitable option for recovering phosphorus (P) from P-containing wastewater. However, the presence of humic substances (HS) would inevitably affect the formation of vivianite crystals. Therefore, the influences of HS on vivianite crystallization and the changes in the harvested vivianite crystals were investigated in this study. The results suggested the inhibition effect of 70 mg/L HS on vivianite crystallization reached 12.24%, while it could be attenuated by increasing the pH and Fe/P ratio of the solution. Meanwhile, the addition of HS altered the size, purity, and morphology of recovered vivianite crystals due to the blockage of the growth sites on the crystal surface. Additionally, the formation of phosphate ester group, hydrogen bonding, and COOH–Fe 2+ complexes are the potential mechanisms of HS interaction with vivianite crystals. The results obtained herein will help to elucidate the underlying mechanism of HS on vivianite crystallization from P-containing wastewater.

Phosphorus recovery by vivianite from different types of wastewater has attracted considerable attention recently. However, the existence of calcium (Ca) would unavoidably affect the formation of vivianite. In this work, the effect of calcium on vivianite crystallization was investigated. The pH of the solutions with low Ca concentration (1–10 mg/L) increased by only 0.06 compared to the conditions without Ca, while a more visible change occurred at high concentrations. Besides, higher removal rate of phosphorus was obtained at higher Ca concentration and the residual amount of Fe in the supernatant increased from 2.01 mg/L in control to 27.29 mg/L at 100 mg Ca/L, indicating competition between Ca and Fe ions. Furthermore, microscopic observation revealed that Ca caused the surface of vivianite to be covered by fine particles, resulting in the inhibition of vivianite growth. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis demonstrated the fine particles covering in the surface of vivianite crystals were mainly amorphous Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 and the formation of Fe-phosphate (s) also led to the decrease of the recovery rate and purity of vivianite. The zeta potential of the recovered product indicated that electrostatic adsorption existed in the process and complemented with surface adsorption to become the main routes of Ca binding. The results obtained herein will provide a theoretical basis for understanding the interference of calcium with vivianite crystallization.

Vivianite as a significant secondary mineral of dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR) exhibits marvelous potential to solve eutrophication as well as phosphorus shortage. Geobattery represents by natural organic matters (NOM) with rich functional groups influences bioreduction of natural iron mineral. Activated carbon (AC) which contains abundant functional groups is expected to serve as geobattery, but there remains insufficient understanding on its geobattery mechanism and how it benefits the vivianite formation. In this study, the charging and discharging cycle of “geobattery” AC enhanced extracellular electron transfer (EET) and vivianite recovery was demonstrated. Feeding with ferric citrate, AC addition increased vivianite formation efficiency by 141 %. The enhancement was attributed to the electron shuttle capacity of storage battery AC, which was contributed by the redox cycle between C O and O–H. Feeding with iron oxides , huge gap of redox potential between AC and Fe(III) minerals broke through the reduction energy barrier. Therefore the iron reduction efficiency of four Fe(III) minerals was accelerated to the same high level around 80 %, and the vivianite formation efficiency were increased by 104 %–256 % in pure culture batches. Except acting as storage battery, AC as a dry cell contributed 80 % to the whole enhancement towards iron reduction, in which O–H groups were the dominant driver. Due to the rechargeable nature and considerable electron exchange capacity, AC served as geobattery playing the role of both storage battery and dry cell on electron storaging and transferring to influence biogeochemical Fe cycle and vivianite recovery.

Crystallization of vivianite-phosphorus is a promising method to recover phosphate as a vital resource from sewage sludge hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) products. This study reveals the in-situ recrystallization mechanism of vivianite-phosphorus (Fe 3 (PO 4 ) 2 ·8H 2 O) regulated by FeCl 3 -assisted HTC in depth. The key finding includes the decipherment that phosphorus is mainly enriched in hydrochar (72.7 ± 2.9 %wt ∼ 84.4 ± 3.31 %wt). Further identified by HRTEM and XRD, dominant phosphorus is profiled as vivianite (Fe 3 (PO 4 ) 2 ·8H 2 O) with very few calcium phosphate crystals (Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 ) formation in hydrochar at near-neutral condition. Under acidic conditions, HMF oxidation triggers reductive dissolution of surface-bound Fe(III)-phosphate complexes, releasing Fe 2+ , HPO 4 2− , and PO 4 3− . The anoxic, reducing conditions at circumneutral pH created by HTC, combining with favorable Fe: P ratio (1.72) and lower calcium concentration (532 mg L −1 ), comprehensively drives the crystallization of Fe 3 (PO 4 ) 2 ·8H 2 O. This demonstration-of-practice study provides deep insights into dual organic waste resource and energy valorization.

Recovering phosphorus (P) from wastewater is crucial for sustainable resource management, and microbially induced vivianite crystallization represents a promising approach for P recovery. However, different forms of humic substances (HS) exert complex and distinct influences on this process through their interactions with both Fe reduction and crystallization. This study systematically investigated the dual roles of three representative HS types (fulvic acid (FA), humic acid (HA), and humin (HM)) in regulating microbially induced vivianite formation. All three HS types promoted Fe(III) reduction, with the promoting effect decreasing in the order FA > HA > HM. In contrast, FA and HA inhibited vivianite crystallization, while HM exhibited a slight promoting effect. Owing to differences in their biodegradability, the duration of these promoting or inhibitory effects also varied substantially. Consequently, HA achieved the most favorable balance between sustained Fe reduction and minimal crystallization inhibition. Quantitative XRD analysis confirmed that the HA group produced the highest vivianite purity (86.1%), significantly exceeding the FA (77.0%), control (78.2%), and HM (74.5%) groups. Electrochemical, spectroscopic, and microbial community analyses further elucidated the trade-off mechanism between Fe reduction and crystal growth. Overall, HA was identified as the most promising HS fraction for optimizing vivianite-based P recovery. These findings also offer implications for understanding P fixation in natural sediments and mitigating eutrophication.

Recovering phosphorus (P) as vivianite from P-rich wastewater has become a focal point of attention due to increasing P demand and eutrophication risks. The anaerobic fermentation supernatant, as a promising target for P recovery, commonly contains organic acids such as acetic acid and propionic acid, which may influence the formation of vivianite crystals. This study investigated the influence of organic acids on the phosphorus recovery from synthetic anaerobic fermentation supernatant through vivianite crystallization. The interaction mechanism was explored with various spectroscopic analyses and density functional theory (DFT) calculations from molecular and atomic levels. The results indicated that organic acids exerted negligible inhibition on P recovery at low concentrations, but caused significant suppression at high concentrations (>700 mg/L). Both acetic and propionic acids led to approximately 8 % inhibition at 1000 mg/L. The organic acids had minimal impact on the overall crystal structure and size distribution of vivianite, but they noticeably altered the surface morphology. Surface complexation, coordination reactions, and chemical bonding between organic acids and vivianite surfaces impeded crystal growth and induced alterations in electronic states. Notably, DFT calculations indicated that propionic acid exhibited a stronger adsorption affinity than acetic acid, thereby affecting crystal growth and electronic states. The experimental results shed light on the relationship between organic acid concentration and the formation of vivianite crystals, providing valuable insights for optimizing P recovery strategies.

This study investigated phosphorus release, iron reduction, and the generation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) during the anaerobic co-fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS) and starchy food waste (SFW). Meanwhile, the formation of vivianite crystals was compared between two different iron sources: ferric oxyhydroxide (FeOOH) and iron citrate (FeC 6 H 5 O 7 ). The results showed that when the amount of SFW added was 30%, phosphorus release increased by 3.5-5 times, and the VFAs yield reached 2857.85 mg/L. When using FeC 6 H 5 O 7 as the iron source, the production of vivianite and VFAs increased by 2 times and 5 times, respectively. Additionally, citric acid enhanced the metabolic activity of acid-producing bacteria, promoting the conversion of more substrates into VFAs. The addition of organic substrates during co-fermentation promoted the growth of hydrolytic and acidogenic bacteria, enhancing hydrolysis and acidogenesis. These changes were beneficial to the biological processes of Fe 2+ and PO 4 3− release and VFAs production. The experiment further revealed that in the organic iron source FeC 6 H 5 O 7 experimental group, the acid-producing bacterial consortium preferentially utilized tyrosine-type substrates, ultimately achieving coupling between VFAs accumulation and Fe 3+ reduction. Overall, this study provides new insights into vivianite formation and VFAs production during the co-fermentation of WAS and SFW with different iron sources, offering a potential pathway for simultaneous nutrient recovery and waste valorization. Formation of vivianite is a promising strategy to recover phosphorus from urban sewage and livestock wastewater, in which both various antibiotics and dissolved organic matters are contained. In this study, the interaction relationship and mechanism between vivianite, antibiotics and DOM were analyzed through the variations of DOM and antibiotics concentrations in supernatant, combined with characterization analysis and theoretical calculation. It’s found that the adsorption of three kinds of antibiotics onto vivianite following the order: tetracycline (TC) (∼90%) > ciprofloxacin (CIP) (∼15%) > sulfamethoxazole (SMX) (∼5%). The presence of fulvic acid (FA) greatly enhanced the adsorption of CIP, SMX to about 90%, 17% respectively, while there was no significant change in the adsorption of TC probably due to its good adsorption in the absence of FA. Interestingly, further analysis demonstrated that the FA will enhance the adsorption of antibiotics to vivianite because of the non-bonding interaction between FA molecules adsorbed on the surface of vivianite and antibiotics, and make the vivianite form better crystal without significant influences on phosphorus recovery. In addition, this study found that the adsorption of different kinds of antibiotics by vivianite was significantly related to the molecular weight of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the actual livestock wastewater. Interestingly, the promotion of SMX adsorption is more likely to occur in the presence of DOM with small molecular weight (<5 kDa), while the introduction of DOM with larger molecular weight has greater promotion effect on CIP adsorption. The results gained in this study will expand the knowledge about the fate of antibiotics and recovery of phosphorus from urban sewage and livestock wastewater in the formation of vivianite.

Exploiting phosphorus resources from waste streams such as municipal wastewater is essential for their recycling and utilization. However, common practice on phosphorus recovery via main-stream biological phosphorus removal and side-stream phosphorus precipitation still faces great challenges such as organic mineralization induced CO 2 emission and aeration caused energy consumption. In this work, ferrihydrite and magnetite were respectively dosed into bioflocculation organic carbon capture system to comprehensively evaluate their potential improvements on phosphorus recovery from municipal wastewater. Results showed that ferrihydrite would outcompete magnetite on phosphorus capture, by increasing TP removal efficiency from 17.5% to 91.2% while maintaining a high organic carbon capture efficiency of about 50%. Although both iron minerals were favored for improving sludge settling performance, the potential toxicity of magnetite was higher than that of ferrihydrite. Chemical precipitation and adsorption are the main pathways for phosphorus removal by iron minerals. Subsequent anaerobic fermentation showed that ferrihydrite bounded phosphorus was mainly transformed to vivianite while magnetite captured phosphorus was released into the liquid. Surprisingly, ferrihydrite was favored for the volatile fatty acids rather than biogas production, with an average yield of 523.2 mg/g volatile suspended solids. This work might be valuable for exploring a more sustainable value-added resource recovery paradigm.

Recovering phosphorus (P) from wastewater benefits both the environment and the field of clean energy. Vivianite is a key precursor for clean energy lithium batteries, making it a highly valuable and promising product in wastewater P recovery. As a widely used cathode material in lithium-ion batteries, LiFePO 4 is valued for its excellent thermal stability, safety, and long cycle life, making it a promising material for sustainable energy applications. However, the large amount of aluminium (Al) present in the recirculated sludge can be released into the supernatant during the anaerobic digestion process, which affects the recovery of vivianite and further impacts the performance of LiFePO 4 . This study investigated the effect of Al on vivianite crystallization throughout the P recovery process and explored the direct synthesis of LiFePO 4 using Al-containing vivianite. Varying initial Al concentrations were examined to understand their influence on the crystallization kinetics, purity, and morphology of vivianite. At low Al concentrations (1–50 mg/L), Al formed amorphous aluminium phosphate that attached to vivianite crystals via electrostatic interactions and surface adsorption. At high Al concentrations (100–300 mg/L), Al predominantly entered the solid phase through co-precipitation, significantly inhibiting vivianite formation. LiFePO 4 /C cathode materials were synthesized using the recovered Al-containing vivianite. The results revealed that Al existed as inert substances within LiFePO 4 /C, reducing its crystallinity and specific discharge capacity. These findings elucidate how Al affects vivianite crystallization during P recovery and provide theoretical insights for converting Al-containing vivianite into value-added LiFePO 4 .

Addressing the challenges associated with phosphorus and arsenic coexistence is not only a scientific necessity but also a practical imperative for the growing importance of sustainable sewage sludge management. This study investigates the speciation and crystallization transformations of phosphorus and arsenic in sewage sludge under Fe(III)-catalyzed hydrothermal treatments with pH ranging from 2.5 to 8.5. Arsenic and phosphorus, both belonging to the same group of the periodic table, exhibit dynamic interactions during Fe(III)-catalyzed hydrothermal treatments. Results reveal that hydrochar yield decreases with lower pH, while the proportion of arsenic(V) in hydrochar decreases with increasing calcium ion concentration. Scanning electron microscopy shows that fibrous and needle-like structures on hydrochar surfaces enhance the adsorption and enrichment of dissolved phosphorus and arsenate, forming vivianite-P and vivianite-like mineral phases. Notably, the crystallization of scorodite (FeAsO 4 ·2H 2 O) facilitates the immobilization of As(III) in near-neutral environments. These findings deepen our understanding of the synergistic morphological processes and crystallization transformations of arsenic and phosphorus during Fe(III)-catalyzed hydrothermal treatments, offering significant implications for P-rich biochar fertilization and application.
