The control of anthropogenic CO2 emissions has attracted worldwide attention because of global warming. Among diverse carbon capture technologies, calcium looping (CaL) is proposed as a favorable approach for postcombustion CO2 mitigation. However, the sorbents’ capacitive loss with increased CaL cycling has severely limited the efficient application of the method. Therefore, obtaining sintering-resistant Ca-based sorbents with high capture capacity, fast capture kinetics, and superior stability is considered a research priority. Here, we reported our latest work on the development of a novel Y2O3/MxOy-modified Ca-based sorbent with superior CO2 sorption performance. Y20/Mg20, i.e., synthetic Ca-based sorbents with Y and Mg incorporated at the mass ratio of 1:1, achieved a significantly high conversion (above 90%) in 20 CaL cycles at a typical calcination temperature (∼900 °C) and was stabilized at the CO2 uptake of 0.311 g of CO2/g of sorbent even after 122 CaL cycles. A comprehensive investigation revealed that the outstanding performance arose from the characteristics of (1) superior surface area and pore volume, provided by pores with radii of <20 nm, (2) a gradually formed skeleton-type structure, and (3) a porous internal structure with a homogeneous distribution of Y2O3 and MgO nanoparticles.

The rapid development of the biodiesel industry is of significant importance for achieving carbon emission reduction in the transportation sector. However, the presence of trace amounts of water in the feedstock during biodiesel synthesis may lead to severe saponification reactions, thereby reducing the yield of fatty acid methyl esters. In this study, based on our exploration of the characteristic of porous carbon to absorb moisture from the environment, we synthesized a CaO catalyst with porous carbon coating via discarded shrimp shell biomass. Because the carbonization temperature of organic matter in shrimp shells is lower than the decomposition temperature of CaCO 3 , the CO 2 generated during pyrolysis can erode the pyrolytic carbon and form porous structure. The mesoporous carbon shell facilitates the diffusion of oil and methanol molecules while adsorbing moisture in the alcohol phase. This structure effectively minimizes the interaction between CaO and water, thereby suppressing saponification reactions and ensuring the smooth progression of the desired transesterification reaction. Through a series of physicochemical characterizations, the structure and water absorption performance of the catalyst were confirmed. The as-prepared CaO@PC-900 catalyst demonstrated the ability to maintain a biodiesel yield of over 85% in a reaction system with a water content of 3%, significantly surpassing the performance of commercial CaO and previously reported Ca-based solid bases. This work provides a new approach to the design of anti-saponification transesterification catalysts, while also offering a novel pathway for the synthesis of porous carbon from discarded crustacean biomass.

Heterogeneous catalysts can avoid the problem of difficult separation and recovery of homogeneous catalysts in transesterification reactions, but there is a lack of basis for process optimization because the quantitative influence mechanism of supports is not clear. In this work, we firstly attempt to make a comprehensive comparation on the effect of potassium fluoride (KF) catalysts on various supports (carbonates and oxides of cerium, magnesium and calcium) on the transesterification reaction, especially on the kinetics. According to the results, oxide-supported catalysts are significantly more active than carbonate-supported catalysts because they have more active sites. When oxides were used as supports, KF/MgO exhibited good activity because of its stronger basicity and higher number of active sites on the surface. Under the same process conditions, the stability time of KF/CeO 2 , KF/CaO and KF/MgO catalysed transesterification reaction was 240 min, 90 min and 30 min, respectively. KF/MgO achieved a conversion of 68.0 %. The activation energies of the KF/CeO 2 , KF/CaO and KF/MgO catalysed transesterification reaction were 22.22 kJ/mol, 15.93 kJ/mol and 15.80 kJ/mol, respectively. The surface alkalinity of KF/MgO increased the frequency of molecular collisions of the reactants and exhibited a faster reaction rate.

On-demand dissolution of hydrogels has shown much potential in easy and pain-free removal of wound dressings. This work firstly describes a type of carbon dots (CDs) for dissolving Ca-alginate hydrogel via site-specific mineralization method. The CDs were characterized by two features, which included presence of primary/secondary amine groups and generation of calcium crystals with Ca 2+ . Especially, the amount of primary/secondary amine groups on CDs played key role in determining whether hydrogel could be dissolved. When there were sufficient primary/secondary amine groups, the mineralization occurred on CDs rather than alginates due to the hydrogen bond between primary/secondary amine and carboxyl of alginates. Thereby, this promoted the gel-sol transition through Ca 2+ capture from the hydrogels. Moreover, antibacterial test revealed Ca 2+ capture from cell walls, while in vivo test revealed hypoxia relief due to porous structures of the renewed hydrogels. Overall, CDs with sufficient primary/secondary amine groups could dissolve Ca-alginate hydrogel through site-specific mineralization method, accompanying by additional functions of antibacterial and hypoxia relief. Lanthanide ions-doped fluoride nanocrystals have excellent application prospect. However, low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) is usually along with lanthanide ions-doped fluoride nanocrystals owing to their low molar absorptivity and narrow absorption band . In order to increase the absorption cross section of Ln 3+ in fluoride nanocrystals, a facile synthesis strategy to enhance luminescence of AF 2 : Ln 3+ (A = Ca, Sr; Ln = Eu, Tb) by the use of carbon dots (CDs) has been developed in this work. A series of characterizations including TEM , XRD , FTIR and XPS demonstrated that the CDs have been successfully combined with the surface of AF 2 : Ln 3+ nanocrystals. The combination of CDs has little influence on the microstructure and phase structure of AF 2 : Ln 3+ , and CDs@AF 2 : Ln 3+ nanocrystals have uniform and regular shape with cubic phase. CDs are used as a broadband sensitizer and lead to the broadband excitation of Ln 3+ , resulting in the enhancement around 10-fold of Ln 3+ luminescence emission in AF 2 : Ln 3+ nanocrystals after CDs combination. The corresponding PLQY increases almost three times, and the luminescence enhancement mechanism by combining CDs is proposed. In addition, the CDs@AF 2 : Ln 3+ nanocrystals are used to prepare CDs@AF 2 : Ln 3+ /PVA films, which exhibits excellent luminescence properties under the excitation of UV light . This work provides a superior method for enhancing the luminescence properties of lanthanide ions-doped nanocomposites and demonstrates practical potential as promising candidates for light-converting thin films .

The exploitation of highly active, cheap cost and durable electrocatalyst for acidic water oxidation reaction still presents a major technological and scientific challenge in proton exchange membrane water electrolysers (PEMWEs). Herein, a hybrid aerogel of oxygen defect-rich RuO 2 nanoparticles coupling with carbon (V O -RuO 2 @CA) was designed to promote their activity and stability during acid water oxidation. The optimized V O -RuO 2 @CA achieves an ultralow overpotential of 207 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for acidic water oxidation and sustains a prominent long-term stability during the 30 h chronopotentiometry test in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . Furthermore, V O -RuO 2 @CA exhibits high mass activities of 186.5 mA mg Ru −1 and TOF values of up to 2.07 s − 1 at an overpotential of 300 mV, being 17.7 and 4.8 times higher than commercial RuO 2 , respectively. Theory calculations and experimental results verify that the oxygen vacancies (V O ) could significantly weaken the binding energy of O* with respect to OOH* for the interfacial Ru centers between RuO 2 and carbon, rendering the increase of the intrinsic water oxidation activity and resistance to over-oxidation for RuO 2 . This research provides a novel pathway to explore remarkably efficient 3D porous hybrid aerogel electrocatalysts toward anodic electrocatalysts applications in PEMWEs.

Biological metal ions play crucial roles in various life processes and exhibit diverse biological functions. Specifically, Ca(II), Mg(II), Cu(II), and Mn (II) ions are intricately involved in insulin function. To further clarify the biological functions of biological metal ions on insulin, the interaction mechanism of insulin affected by Ca(II), Mg(II), Cu(II), and Mn (II) ions were comparably investigated via spectroscopic, circular dichroism(CD), and electrochemical approaches. Electrochemical studies demonstrate that Mn(II) forms an M 2 L-type complex with insulin, exhibiting a binding constant of β Mn = 9.3 × 10 9 , while Cu(II) and insulin form an M 4 L-type complex with a significantly higher binding constant of β Cu =9.18 × 10 12 . Electrochemical investigation of the interaction between Ca(II) and Mg(II) with insulin adsorbed onto a glass carbon electrode surface revealed that the presence of Ca(II) and Mg(II) induced conformational changes in insulin, resulting in reduced adsorption capacity. Additionally, it was observed that the presence of Ca(II) and Mg(II) enhanced the redox signal of probe ions. The binding constants values were calculated to be 1.108 × 10 3 L•mol –1 for the insulin-Ca(II) system and 2.28 ×10 2 L• mol –1 for the insulin-Mg(II) system. Spectroscopic studies showed that the binding of Cu(II) ions to insulin molecules may be controlled by chelation mechanism, and the interaction between Cu(II) ions and insulin molecules may occur in the aromatic region. Mn(II) ion binding is mainly controlled by ionic interactions, and its binding site is far away from the aromatic region. The combination of Ca(II) and Mg(II) with insulin induced a small enhancement in the Ultraviolet-visible (UV) absorption peak, with Ca(II) exhibiting a more pronounced effect compared to Mg(II). The results of spectral, CD and electrochemical studies are consistent.

To reduce mortality rate caused by life-threatening bacterial infections, advanced antibacterial materials have attracted widespread attention from researchers worldwide. In this study, the antibacterial P(AA-AM)/CA/GA nanofiber membranes with pH-responsive properties were successfully prepared by facile electrospinning technology. A series of characterizations of the obtained nanofiber membranes showed the addition of P(AA-AM) improves the surface wettability of the as-spun fibers in comparison to those of CA and CA/GA nanofiber membranes. High-temperature treatment was found to enhance the mechanical properties of the P(AA-AM)/CA/GA membranes due to the crosslinking reactions. The prepared P(AA-AM)/CA/GA nanofiber membrane exhibits a pH-responsive effect which is evident by the change in GA’s release rate in solutions with different pH values. The cellulose acetate (CA) spinning nanofiber structure formed by P(AA-AM) coated GA also extended the release process of GA and improved the antibacterial timeliness of nanofiber membranes. The antibacterial experiments on E. coli and S. aureus showed that the electrospun nanofiber membranes containing GA had potent antibacterial properties , which were further enhanced by increasing the GA content in the P(AA-AM)/CA/GA blends. This study provides an insight into the design and preparation of pH-sensitive antibacterial materials using facile electrospinning technology.

Carbonic anhydrase (CA) has been suggested as a biocatalyst for carbon dioxide capture since it could effectively catalyze the hydration of carbon dioxide. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted significant attention in the development of immobilized enzyme carriers due to their pore tunability and excellent stability. In this study, UiO-67 materials with varying defect degrees (DUiO-67) were prepared using the organic linker missing method to enhance the catalytic performance. The results indicated that both the defect degree and the pore size of DUiO-67 materials decreased with an increase in acetic acid equivalent. After CA immobilization, all DUiO-67 materials exhibited excellent thermal, pH and recycling stability. CA@DUiO-67–25 showed higher enzyme catalytic activity and conversion ability than the other materials. After 10 cycles, CA@DUiO-67–25 retained 57 % of its initial conversion capacity. The construction of defective MOFs provides a promising new strategy for CA immobilization to achieve the catalytic conversion of CO 2 .

Despite significant breakthroughs that have been made in the application performance of traditionally distributed Guerbet alcohol ethoxylates (GAEO), research on the characteristics of their narrow distribution products remains relatively limited. Herein, a series of hydrophilic and hydrophobic nonionic surfactants have been synthesized via the ethoxylation of 2-butyl-octanol with ethylene oxide. Ca(OAc) 2 was employed as a narrow distribution (NRD) catalyst, while KOH served as a broad distribution (BRD) catalyst. The synthesized products were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), 1 H and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H, 13 C NMR) spectroscopy. In addition, a comprehensive assessment of the physicochemical and surface properties of the NRD GAEO surfactants was conducted through systematic investigations. The results were then compared to conventionally distributed GAEO surfactants. The study has demonstrated that NRD GAEO surfactants exhibited lower critical micelle concentration (CMC) values, which have the higher efficiency of the surfactant application. In addition, the NRD products have superior wettability performance, reduced foaming capacity in foam properties, and improved rapid defoaming capacities. In regarding their other properties, they closely mirrored the performance of BRD products. These findings will contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the properties of NRD ethoxylates and have substantial practical implications in optimizing personal care and household cleaning products.

Improving saline-alkali soil requires cost-efficient and stable technologies. In this study, a novel technology combining in-situ super-stable mineralization with Ca-bentonite was successfully applied to ameliorate saline-alkali soil. A simulation experiment was conducted on Ca-bentonite in solution to validate its feasibility, and in-situ mineralization using humic acid, Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O, and Ca-bentonite was performed to treat saline-alkali soil. Additionally, climate modeling and field experiments were employed to investigate the effects of this technology on soil physicochemical properties, crop growth, and crop yield. Under natural conditions, Ca-bentonite can transform into Na-bentonite via cation exchange with Na + . The results from the in-situ mineralization experiment showed that the soil pH, total content of CO 3 2− and HCO 3 − , Na + content, electrical conductivity, and bulk density decreased from approximately 10.30 to below 9.00, 7.81 to 1.53 g/kg, 7.20 to 1.51 g/kg, 2741 to 552 μS/cm, and 1.63 to 1.24 g/cm 3 , respectively. Furthermore, the germination rate of corn increased from 0 % to 83.3 % in climate simulation experiments. Field trials conducted in Inner Mongolia and Jilin, China, further demonstrated significant improvements in soil properties. The seedling emergence rates for corn and oats significantly increased, rising from 0 % to over 85 % and 95 %, respectively. Correspondingly, crop yields reached 323 kg/hm 2 for corn and 182 kg/hm 2 for oats. Together, our study introduces a novel, cost-effective, and efficient technology to enhance crop growth by mitigating soil salinity and alkalinity. This approach provides a new perspective for alleviating salt-alkali stress and contributes to the advancement of healthy and sustainable agricultural practices.

Flexible wearable electronics impose ever-more stringent demands on the design strategies for piezoresistive sensing materials. Nanofiber aerogels (NFAs) have emerged as a focal point in this field, attributed to their unique characteristics such as low density, extensive specific surface area, high porosity, and outstanding mechanical performance. Conventional methods for fabricating conductive NFA composites often entail complex procedures, including additional thermal annealing and carbonization, to establish three-dimensional conductive networks, which significantly hinder scalability and practical applications. To overcome this challenge, we propose a sustainable, cost-effective, and efficient hydrogen-bonded self-assembly drive strategy for designing conductive nanofiber networks with robust coaxial structures. During polymerization, pyrrole monomers were in situ polymerized onto cellulose acetate/thermoplastic polyurethane (CA/TPU) composite nanofibers through hydrogen-bonding, forming a roubst conductive shell layer while facilitating the mutual cross-linking of short nanofibers to establish a porous three-dimensional network. Benefiting from the nanofiber skeleton and multilevel pore structure, the resultant CA/TPU/PPy NFA (CTP-NFA) possesses an ultra-low volume density (30.77 mg cm −3 ) and remarkable mechanical properties (55.78 kPa at 80 % strain), enduring deformation under 1700 times its weight. Furthermore, the associated aerogel sensor exhibits ultra-high sensitivity (33.56 kPa −1 ), rapid response time (100 ms), and exceptional cycling stability (>5500 cycles of compression). Significantly, the NFA-based piezoresistive sensor precisely detects pressure signals as low as 30 Pa, enabling accurate monitoring of adult pulse waveforms. Given its superior performance, the resultant NFA presents substantial promise for applications in human health monitoring and human-computer interaction.
