A 3D-bioprinted multifunctional ADM/CSMA/TA hydrogel scaffold for sustained delivery of mechanically stimulated fibroblast-derived exosomes accelerates diabetic wound healing

Zhiyu Ding,Yijun Ren,Xin Luo,Song Wu,Wengjuan Li,Yong Chen

Mechanical stretching enhances the therapeutic potency of fibroblast-derived exosomes. • Mechanical conditioning reshapes the miRNA cargo and bioactivity of exosomes. • M-Exos promote fibroblast function, angiogenesis, and pro-reparative macrophage polarization. • A 3D-bioprinted ADM/CSMA/TA scaffold enables sustained local delivery of M-Exos. • The multifunctional scaffold accelerates tissue regeneration in diabetic wounds. Diabetic wound healing is hindered by impaired cellular function, insufficient angiogenesis, persistent inflammation, and bacterial infection. Here, we developed a 3D-bioprinted multifunctional M-Exos/ADM/CSMA/TA hydrogel scaffold for diabetic wound repair. Mechanical stimulation enhanced the therapeutic activity of fibroblast-derived exosomes (M-Exos), which promoted fibroblast and endothelial cell proliferation and migration, enhanced tube formation, and facilitated pro-reparative macrophage polarization. miRNA sequencing revealed distinct molecular profiles associated with tissue repair-related pathways. The incorporation of acellular dermal matrix, chitosan methacrylate, and tannic acid produced a porous, biocompatible, and antibacterial scaffold, and 3D bioprinting enabled sustained M-Exos release. In a diabetic full-thickness skin-defect model, the scaffold accelerated wound closure, re-epithelialization, collagen remodeling, and neovascularization while alleviating local inflammation and infection. This mechanically activated exosome-based scaffold integrates regenerative, angiogenic, immunomodulatory, and antibacterial functions, providing a promising strategy for diabetic wound treatment.

The effect of oxygen-containing species on corrosion behavior of Ta (1 1 0) surface: A DFT study with an experimental verification

Jiping Zhao,Youlong Xu,Shiheng Liu,Xiangdong Ding

Adsorption of oxygen-containing species on the surface of tantalum (Ta) electrode significantly affects its electrochemical corrosion behavior. Density-functional theory (DFT) is employed to investigate the adsorption energies, structural properties and electronic structures of atomic oxygen (O) and molecular water (H 2 O) on Ta (1   1   0) surface. The adsorption behavior of H 2 O at room temperature is also studied based on ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD). We find the passivation of Ta metal is mainly attributed to the strong adsorption of oxygen atoms. Thermodynamic results show that bulk Ta 2 O 5 is easily formed at room temperature, which is the fundamental reason for the spontaneous passivation of Ta (1   1   0) surface. The formation of an oxygen monolayer (1.00 ML) on Ta (1   1   0) surface dramatically increases the work function, making the equilibrium potential of Ta electrode move in the positive direction, thus slowing down the corrosion rate of Ta metal. However, the adsorption of H 2 O causes a negative work function change, which promotes its anodic dissolution. The electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) of tantalum foil in three different NH 4 F-methanol electrolytes (pure, 0.01 M water and oxygen saturated) shows that the charge transfer resistance increases in the sequence R H2O  < R pure  < R oxygen , which can be well explained by the results of DFT calculations.

Unraveling the composition-dependent CMAS corrosion resistance in A6B2O17 (A = Hf, Zr; B = Ta, Nb) ceramics: An experimental and first-principles study

Sai Liu,Xiaopeng Hu,Guangsheng Chen,Shenxiang Luo,Yu Zou,Jinwei Guo,Wang Zhu

Despite their promise as candidates for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), the engineering application of A 6 B 2 O 17 ( A = Hf, Zr; B = Ta, Nb) ceramics is currently limited by a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding their CMAS corrosion behavior and underlying mechanisms. This paper addresses this gap by elucidating the governing effects of compositional modulation and corrosion conditions on the CMAS corrosion performance of these ceramics, integrating experimental and first-principles theoretical approaches. The results demonstrate that while all compositions exhibit similar corrosion products and resistance mechanisms, A 6 Ta 2 O 17 (particularly Hf 6 Ta 2 O 17 ) displays superior corrosion resistance. This enhanced performance is attributed to a combination of factors, including its exceptional thermodynamic stability, reduced Ca 2+ diffusivity, the significant barrier effect of its dense corrosion product layer, and stronger interfacial bonding strength. Corrosion-induced spallation in Zr 6 B 2 O 17 primarily stems from two factors: the phase transformation of ZrO 2 and an inherently weak interfacial bonding strength. Moreover, while an elevated Ca/Si ratio increases the aggressiveness of CMAS melts, the formation of a dense corrosion product layer on the ceramic surface effectively mitigates this detrimental effect.

Nano-(Ta, Zr)C Precipitates at Multigrain Conjunctions in TaC Ceramic with 10 mol% ZrC and 5 mol% Cu as Sintering Aid

Lianbing Zhong,Guihong Geng,Yujin Wang,Feng Ye,Limeng Liu

A fully dense TaC ceramic was prepared by hot pressing using 10 mol% ZrC plus 5 mol% Cu as a sintering aid. Formation of (Ta, Zr)C solid solution (ss) by reaction between TaC and ZrC facilitated densification. Addition of Cu refined the microstructure and consequently improved flexural strength of the TaC ceramics. TEM investigation found ubiquitous precipitation of nanocrystallites at multigrain conjunctions. The nanocrystallites were (Ta, Zr)C solid solution with uniform dispersion in an oxygen-rich glassy matrix. Although formation of nanoprecipitates may not much affect the mechanical properties of the TaC ceramic, the structure suggested a new type of nanoceramic worth further research.

In situ formation of tannic (TA)-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) nanospheres on inner and outer surface of polypropylene membrane toward enhanced dye removal capacity

Yuyang Zhou,Xiaochun Wu,Jin Zhang,Zhenxing Wang

Tannic acid (TA) − 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) coating (TA-APTES coating) composed of abundant nanospheres with secondary reaction sites has many distinct advantages for surface modification. Herein, an in-situ growth method is proposed to generate TA-APTES nanospheres on both the outer and inner surface of polypropylene (PP) membrane. Compared with previous reported TA-APTES nano spheres coating just on the outer surface of the membrane (named PP-Su-NPs), TA-APTES nano spheres on both outer and inner surfaces prepared with this method (named PP-En-NPs) exhibits much better functional performance after secondary reactions. As a proof of concept, the TA-APTES nanospheres is functionalized by tannic acid, polyethyleneimine (PEI) and Fe 3+ to carry positive charges for absorbing anionic dyes, and the dye adsorption performance of the PP-En-NPs after the secondary reactions is 7–8 times higher than that of PP-Su-NPs. Interestingly, the functionalized coating can not only absorb anionic dyes, but also cationic dyes, and selective desorption is also realized for this functionalized coating. The possible mechanism is revealed in this study. This study will accelerate the development of the TA-APTES coating, and make it become a powerful tool for membrane modification.

Development of a magnetic core-shell Fe3O4@TA@UiO-66 microsphere for removal of arsenic(III) and antimony(III) from aqueous solution

Pengfei Qi,Rong Luo,Thomas Pichler,Jianqiang Zeng,Yan Wang,Yuhua Fan,Kunyan Sui

Removal of trivalent species of As and Sb from wastewater is crucial due to their more toxic and mobile properties. In this study, a novel magnetic core-shell microsphere Fe 3 O 4 @TA@UiO-66 was developed via in-situ crystal growth of UiO-66 around the magnetic Fe 3 O 4 modified by Tannic Acid (TA). Characterization of the microsphere by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) confirmed that UiO-66 was adhered on the surface of Fe 3 O 4 functionalized by TA. Adsorption experiments showed that the magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @TA@UiO-66 had high adsorption capacity for As(III) and Sb(III) and could be rapidly separated from aqueous media within two minutes after treatment. The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms were described well by the pesudo-second order model and Langmuir model, respectively. In addition, the composite exhibited excellent removal performance for As(III) and Sb(III) in a broad solution chemistry environment, including pH and co-existing anions. Based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) measurement, we proposed that the removal mechanism was mainly controlled through a synergistic interaction of surface complexation and hydrogen bonding. This study indicates the potential of the magnetic microsphere to be used as an effective material for the removal of As(III) and Sb(III) from water.

Experimental and theoretical investigation of the influence of carrageenan-polyvinyl pyrrolidone combination on the chemical mechanical polishing of TSV Ta barrier layers

Zhe Liang,Ru Wang,Yu Zhu,Xuhua Chen,Zhanjie Du,Tao Zheng,Yanwei Dong,Yang Chen,Peng Yang,Yunhui Shi

Polishing of Ta barrier layer by through-silicon-via (TSV) has a low removal rate. Large particles with diameters greater than 0.5 μm tend to form in the slurry, which complicates the achievement of an atomic-level planarized wafer surface during chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) while also maintaining a high removal rate of Ta. To address this challenge, this paper developed a novel environmentally friendly surfactant for the Ta barrier layer polishing, composed of carrageenan (CG) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). By contact angle measurement, electrochemistry, XPS, FESEM, slurry Zeta potential stability and particle size test, the synergistic mechanism of carrageenan and polyvinyl pyrrolidone was analyzed, and the comparative analysis of the surface quality of Cu and Ta was conducted after CMP under varying conditions. The findings reveal that slurry’s composition was modified by the addition of CG and PVP, the removal rate ratio of Ta to Cu achieves a 2:1 ratio under the conditions of 10 wt% SiO 2 , 0.3 wt% H 2 O 2 , 1.5 wt% guanidine phosphate (GP) and pH 9, surface roughness indicators, including Sq and Ra, of Cu and Ta both reach sub-nm level. The surface non-uniformity of Cu and Ta decreased to 1.7 % and 1.8 %. This indicates that the synergistic effect of CG and PVP in the slurry can obtain a better wafer surface while ensuring a high level of Ta removal efficiency.

Poly(terephthalic acid diallyl ester) embedded by tantalum microspheres (PTADE@Ta) for precise and long-term X-ray imaging in the embolization

Xiao Qinglin,Ai Xiujuan,Chen Zhiyuan,Chen Piaoyi,Chen Lingling,Liu Ou,Ma Yongyan,Huang Yugang,Li Xufeng,Ye Guodong

Transcatheter arterial embolization is one of the important tools in the interventional treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma. However, the existing embolic agents cannot achieve long-term visualization effectiveness. Therefore, we developed a radiopaque embolic microsphere (PTADE@Ta) capable of long-term imaging. PTADE@Ta was successfully prepared by dispersing tantalum nanoparticles in a poly (diallyl terephthalate) via photopolymerization. The microspheres were characterized by SEM observation and thermogravimetric analysis. The in vitro biocompatibility was assessed by determining the cell metabolic activity of human umbilical vein endothelial cells, and the in vivo biocompatibility was assessed by observing tissue sections from New Zealand white rabbits. Their non-degradability was verified by their degradability in lysozyme solution. The radiopaque effect was verified by X-ray and CT imaging capability. The results showed that the embolic product has good dispersibility, thermal stability, biocompatibility and long-term imaging. Graphical abstract

Simultaneous Enhancement of Mildew Resistance and Dimensional Stability of Bamboo with a Facile One-Step In Situ Growth of ZnO/TA/Ag Composites

Juan Xu,Jinju Ma,Lanxiang Liu,Baoshan Tang,Hong Zhang,Wenwen Zhang,Zhengjun Shi

Bamboo is a renewable and fast-growing biomass resource with limited utilization and service life owing to its susceptibility to mold. Conventional nano-modification methods, particularly two-step approaches, are limited by weak interfacial bonding between nanoparticles and the bamboo substrate, complex processing, and an inability to simultaneously enhance antimildew performance and dimensional stability. To address these limitations, we developed a one-step hydrothermal method involving the use of tannic acid (TA) for in situ fabrication of ZnO/TA/Ag composite particles on bamboo surfaces. Process parameters were optimized to 100 °C, 10 h, and a zinc acetate-to-tannic acid molar ratio of 20:1. The modified bamboo was characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. We demonstrated that ZnO/TA/Ag composite particles were successfully loaded onto the bamboo surface, thus improving the all-around performance of the bamboo simultaneously. Antimildew activity against Aspergillus niger and Penicillium citrinum increased from grade 4 in untreated bamboo to grades 1 and 0, respectively; water absorption decreased by 52.85%, and anti-swelling efficiency reached 30.41%, indicating improved mold resistance and dimensional stability. Thus, our technique could serve as a green and efficient one-step in situ modification strategy for high-performance functionalization of bamboo, making it suitable for applications in humid outdoor and indoor environments.

Controlled surface segregation via hydrogel-facilitated phase separation enables uniform TA/PVP layer and in situ silver assembly for high-performance antifouling membranes

Yuting Sang,Zhan Lv,Yuanyuan Yu,Haotian Hu,Jixiang Yang,Le Han,Liang Shen,Zhongbo Zhou

Surface segregation during non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) enables in-situ membrane functionalization, yet the inherently rapid and uncontrolled phase separation kinetics typically yield heterogeneous additive distribution. Herein, we presented a hydrogel-facilitated phase separation (HFPS) strategy to achieve controlled surface segregation of tannic acid/polyvinylpyrrolidone (TA/PVP) for subsequent in-situ Ag + reduction and assembly of a functional AgNPs layer. By exploiting delayed phase separation kinetics, physical confinement and interfacial gelation imparted by the hydrogel, HFPS yielded substantially higher and more uniform TA/PVP surface coverage (79.8%) compared to NIPS (60.9%). This uniformly enriched TA/PVP layer enabled high-density, homogeneous AgNP grafting with a narrow size distribution on HFPS membranes. The optimized HFPS membrane—with balanced TA/PVP and Ag + loadings—exhibited superhydrophilicity (water contact angle ~ 40°), high water flux (895 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ), and excellent BSA rejection (>98%)—significantly outperforming its NIPS counterpart (50–65°, 362 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , ~ 98%). In dynamic antifouling tests, it achieved a flux recovery ratio (FRR) of 84.7% with BSA filtration and only 5.3% flux decline during bacterial filtration, substantially exceeding NIPS controls (64.4% FRR, ∼45% decline). Moreover, by utilizing patterned hydrogel templates, surface microstructures were introduced to further enhance flux to 994 L·m −2  ·h −1 ·bar −1 and reduce flux decline to 3.8% for bacterial filtration. Ag + release measurements confirmed a higher total Ag loading of 59.1 μg·cm −2 and a stable release rate of 0.199 μg·cm −2 ·day −1 sustained over 40 days. Overall, this HFPS-guided surface segregation strategy offers a promising platform for fabricating high-performance antifouling membranes for engineering applications.

Preparation of Ta-based layer on SS316N as bipolar plate of high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells by molten salts disproportionation reaction

Feng Xiong,Hao Deng,Ruoyin Luo,Shaojie Gao,Chenming Fan,Xin Gao,Bing Li

In this study, a dense Ta-based layer with a thickness of 400 nm was fabricated on SS316N bipolar plates (Ta-SS316N) by using a disproportionation reaction of Ta in a K 2 TaF 7 -Ta(powders)-KCl-NaCl molten salt system at 900 °C for 6 h. According to XRD analysis , the Ta-based layer was mainly composed of metallic Ta as well as Ta 2 N 0.86 . In the simulated HT-PEMFC cathode environment, the corrosion current density of Ta-SS316N obtained from the potentiodynamicl polarization curves was 0.96 μA/cm 2 , which meets the 2025 U S. DOE standard. Compared to the SS316N substrate, Ta-SS316N showed two orders of magnitude higher corrosion resistance and nearly 1 V higher self-corrosion potential, with an interfacial contact resistance of 27.5 mΩ∙cm 2 , accounting for about one-quarter that of SS316N substrate. This provides a low-cost, easy-to-operate method to prepare Ta-based layer on stainless steel bipolar plates used for HT-PEMFC.

Synthesis of a novel poly-TA-Si nanohybrid with dynamic covalent SS bonds and its effect on the mechanical strength of cement paste

Shuzhen Zheng,Wenxiu Qiao,Jianfeng Ma,Yinwen Li,Shoufang Xu,Qianping Ran

Using organic/inorganic nanocomposites to optimize the microstructures of cement hydration products at the micro/nanometre scale is a promising method for improving the mechanical properties of cement-based materials. One type of novel nanohybrid material modified by the flexible autonomous healing polymer poly-TA (thioctic acid) was synthesized and used as a highly efficient mechanical improvement agent for cement paste. The nanohybrids linear LNTS-1 and bulk CNTS-2 were synthesized from silane-coupled nanosilica and alpha thioctic acid. Due to the existence of hydrogen bonds, coordination bonds and dynamic covalent S S bonds, this type of linear poly-TA with a certain amount of calcium content exhibited good self-healing properties. Linear LNTS-1 can effectively improve the macro flexural strength of cement-based materials without a negative effect on their compressive strength. The flexural strength of cement pastes with 1.0‰ LNTS-1 increased by 11.9%, 15.6%, and 16.9% after curing for 3, 7, and 28 d compared with the control cement paste. The results of adsorption experiments show that nanohybrid LNTS-1 has strong adsorption on calcium ions, which affects the formation of cement hydration products.
