Oriented BN/Silicone rubber composite thermal interface materials with high out-of-plane thermal conductivity and flexibility

Qinghua Hu,Xue Bai,Chenxu Zhang,Xiaoliang Zeng,Zhengyong Huang,Jian Li,Junwei Li,Yuexing Zhang

Polymer composites with high out-of-plane thermal conductivity , flexibility, and low modulus have always been one of the ideal thermal interface materials . Using softer polymer composites can reduce thermal contact resistance and stress caused by the mismatch of the coefficient of thermal expansion, as well as heat can be quickly transferred due to its high out-of-plane thermal conductivity. Herein, we report a silicone rubber-based composites with high out-of-plane thermal conductivity and softness prepared by combining shear orientation and layer-by-layer stacking methods. The composites exhibit an out-of-plane thermal conductivity of 7.62 Wm -1 K −1 , while maintain the flexibility and high elastic recovery of silicone rubber. According to finite element simulation analysis, the increase in thermal conductivity comes from the orientation of the BN flakes and the formation of the thermal network. This work provides a simple method for the preparation of flexible thermal interface materials with high out-of-plane thermal conductivity for many potential applications.

Robust PU foam skeleton coated with hydroxylated BN as PVA thermal conductivity filler via microwave-assisted curing

Wang Wenbo,Liu Botao,Lv Xiaomeng

To achieve adaptation to the heat dissipation effect of electronic devices in the 5G era and improvement of the anisotropic thermal conductivity of the insulating polymer, three-dimensional (3D) PU@BNNS-OH network structure was constructed via layer-by-layer assembly with polyurethane (PU) foam as the robust skeleton of three-dimensional structure, and hydroxylated boron nitride nanosheet (BNNS-OH) as thermal conductive filler. Then PU@BNNS-OH was composited with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) via microwave-assisted curing method to get the final thermal conductivity composites (PVA/PU@BNNS-OH). The result showed that the interconnected thermal conductivity network was significantly effective in improving the anisotropic thermal conductivity of the composite with high-temperature endurance and moderate mechanical property. When the BNNS-OH coating is 10 wt%, the optimal thermal conductivity of the composite is 4.68 W · \({\mathrm{m}}^{-1}\) · \({\mathrm{K}}^{-1}\) and the thermal conductivity enhancement efficiency is 45.50, which is significantly higher than others reported in the literature. Both the finite element analysis and thermal infrared analysis indicated that the thermal conductivity of the composites was significantly improved and paved the way for its potential application. The present microwave-assisted synthesis strategy is fast and energy-saving and can be widely used for synthesizing different insulated polymer-based thermal interface materials.

A CsPbBr3 quantum dots/ultra-thin BN fluorescence sensor for stability and highly sensitive detection of tetracycline

Wei Wang,Pengyin Deng,Xiqing Liu,Yuqin Ma,Yongsheng Yan

The abuse of tetracycline (TC) antibiotics would seriously affect human health and hence the detection had become essential. Here, we had constructed a hydrophobicity of fluorescence sensor based on the excellent photoluminescence emission of CsPbBr 3 QDs and the hydrophobic ability of Boron Nitride (BN). This design effectively solved the instability of CsPbBr 3 QDs and realized the sensitive detection of TC. Under optimum conditions, the linear range of TC was 0–0.44 mg L −1 with the 6.5 μg L −1 . Furthermore, the sensor was successfully used for the recognition of TC in honey and milk samples. This work also provided an ideal for designing CsPbBr 3 QDs-based on fluorescence sensor.

Simultaneous enhancement of impedance matching and the absorption behavior of BN/RGO nanocomposites for efficiency microwave absorption

Zhiyang Jiang,Haoxu Si,Xin Chen,Huimin Liu,Lei Zhang,Yahong Zhang,Chunhong Gong,Jingwei Zhang

In this work, to meet the comprehensive demands for efficiency and lightweight electromagnetic wave absorption (EWA) material, boron nitride/reduced graphene oxide (BN/RGO) nanocomposites were prepared via a one-step thermal nitridation process. The insulative BN component in the obtained nano BN/RGO hybrids realized the regulation of conductivity and thus impedance matching, and the large interface area of the hybrids facilitated the high-frequency polarization effect and contributed to the enhanced EWA performance. Remarkably, the EWA performance of optimized BN/RGO hybrids reached a strong reflection loss ( RL ) of −48.9 dB in a broad effective absorption bandwidth of 4.2 GHz with a low filler content of 3.0 wt. % and at a thin thickness of 2.6 mm, which well outperforms that of most other reported dielectric absorption materials. Our results may light a new way on introducing light element component to produce high-efficiency RGO-based EWA materials with facile and low-cost production process.

Synergetic enhancement of thermal conductivity in the silica-coated boron nitride (SiO2@BN)/polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) composites

Tang Yunlu,Xiao Chao,Ding Jiwan,Hu Kun,Zheng Kang,Tian Xingyou

High thermal conductivity polymer composites have increased application in modern electronics. To achieve high thermal conductivity at relatively low filler content, two critical approach are used: surface modification of the filler and construction of thermal conductive network in polymer composites. This article provided a new simple and feasible method to modify h-BN consisting of physical absorption of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). Then, SiO 2 @BN/PMMA composites were fabricated via solution-mixing and hot compression. The surface modification of BN enhanced the interface interaction between adjacent BN, which led to reduced thermal resistance and phonon scattering. The solution-mixing and hot compression process ensured the formation of thermal conductive pathway at the same time. The highest thermal conductivity of 40 vol% SiO 2 @BN/PMMA composite reached 5.583W /m K, which exhibited 3292% and 200% enhancement compared with the pure PMMA and melt-mixing BN/PMMA composites, respectively.

Surface self-assembled multi-layer MWCNTs-COOH/BN-PDA/CF for flexible and efficient solar steam generator

Qingbin Qi,Yu Wang,Wei Wang,Dan Yu

Many new laboratory-scale photothermal conversion materials have been developed for purification or desalination but developing easy-to-manufacture, low-cost and scalable materials with high efficiency of solar energy to thermal energy still faces great challenges. Herein, we provided a simple and effective method for self-assembly of dopamine-modified boron nitride (BN-PDA) and carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) layers on cotton fabric (CF), and assembled a solar steam generator by using the as-prepared composite cotton fabric as photothermal layer, cotton yarns (CYs) as water supply channel, and thermally insulated polystyrene (PS) foam as a supporting material. This solar steam generator exhibited a superior evaporation rate of 1.55 kg m −2 h −1 and an excellent photothermal conversion efficiency of ∼83.66% under 1.0 sun irradiance (1.0 kW m −2 ), with optical absorption up to 93.50% in the wavelength of 300–2500 nm. Meanwhile, excellent quality of freshwater from seawater and dyeing wastewater was also demonstrated. Different from other solar steam generator systems, this assembled fabric is cost-effective and readily available, suitable for large-scale industrial applications. Notably, the results show that multi-layer structure imparts it with outstanding mechanical flexibility and robustness, making it a potential candidate for fresh water supply in remote, off-grid or water-contaminated areas.

Practical mutual transformation of azobenzene and hydrazobenzene using porous BN supported Cu nanoparticles as a redox catalyst

Yumei Zhang,Xinhao Liu,Yandong Duan,Yue Wang,Jinying Song,Qingzhi Luo,Jing An,Xueyan Li,Huiying Mu,Desong Wang

Azobenzene and hydrazobenzene compounds are essential intermediates for synthesizing pharmaceuticals and dyes. Meanwhile, the hydrazobenzene/azobenzene couple is a potential hydrogen storage system when both the dehydrogenation of hydrazobenzene and the hydrogenation of azobenzenes can be achieved under mild reaction conditions. In this work, we report an entirely mutual transformation of azobenzene and hydrazobenzene under very mild conditions using porous BN supported Cu nanoparticles (Cu/PBN) as the catalyst for the first time. Direct oxidative dehydrogenation reaction proceeded in the open air with the removal of molecular hydrogen as the by-product and a wide range of hydrazobenzenes readily undergoes dehydrogenation, resulting in an excellent yield of the corresponding azobenzene.

A Full-component recyclable Epoxy/BN thermal interface material with anisotropy high thermal conductivity and interface adaptability

Jingkai Liu,Haoyang Feng,Jinyue Dai,Kerong Yang,Guangmeng Chen,Shuaipeng Wang,Dandan Jin,Xiaoqing Liu

Thermal interface materials (TIMs) with excellent heat dissipation capacity are highly desired for the development of miniaturized, integrated, and dense electronic devices. In addition, with the increasing accumulation of e-waste, the recyclability of TIMs has also become an urgent concern. Herein, a fully recyclable TIM with high thermal conductivity and conformability to the rough surface was prepared based on the synthesized epoxy vitrimer and boron nitride (BN) nanosheet. Results revealed that only by simple hot-pressing, the filled BN could be easily oriented in the plane and led to a thermal conductivity of 3.85 W m −1 K −1 with the BN content of 40 wt%, which was 30 times higher than that of the pristine epoxy resin and 4.3 times higher than the composite before hot-pressing treatment. The electronic device made of the prepared composite exhibited a 20 °C lower core temperature than the commercial silicone material, due to the superior thermal conduction and mechanical compliance. Moreover, benefiting from the multistage degradation mechanism of the synthesized epoxy vitrimer, the fabricated composite could be efficiently chemically recovered under mild conditions, demonstrating the BN recovery rate of 96.2% and other organic raw materials recovery rate of 73.6% to 82.4%. This work provides us with a new strategy for the design of recyclable and high-performance TIMs.

Design of Silicon Rubber/BN Film with High Through-plane Thermal Conductivity and Ultra-low Contact Resistance

Taoqing Huang,Tian Wang,Jun Jin,Min Chen,Limin Wu

Polymer-hexagonal boron nitride (BN) composite has become an ideal thermal interface material (TIM) for electronic devices because of its high thermal conductivity and superior electronic insulation. However, owing to the 2D shape and chemical inertness of BN filler, the vertical alignment of BN and the huge thermal resistance are current challenges, which hinder the efficient heat transfer of polymer/BN composites. Herein, by a novel non-solvent induced phase separation process combined “ in-situ welding” strategy, we present the fabrication of silicone rubber film with finger-like continuous BN-welded filler skeleton, which reveals a high through-plane thermal conductivity of 15.4 W m −1 K −1 at only ∼ 15 wt% BN. Finite element simulation and nonlinear model analyses theoretically confirm that the filler-to-filler interfacial thermal resistance (ITR) is halved after in-situ welding process. In addition, thanks to the excellent compressibility and conformability of silicon rubber matrix, the contact thermal resistance (<70 Kmm 2 W −1 ) of this composite film is much lower than that of the commercial thermal pad under different pressure. The proposed strategy opens up a novel and high-throughput preparation strategy for the high-performance TIM for modern electronic devices.

Rapid densification mechanism and properties of h-BN/ZrO2 composites with oxide additives by spark plasma sintering

Mao Chen,Bingbing Fan,Haoyuan Lei,Zijie Song,Shaojun Zhang,Hailong Wang,Rui Zhang,Hongxia Li,Yongqiang Chen

Large size high density h-BN/ZrO 2 composites (ø = 110 mm, h = 15 mm) were rapidly prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) with sintering cycle 20 min. The effects of additives on the mechanical properties , microstructure evolution, and corrosion resistance of the h-BN/ZrO 2 composites were studied. The Al 2 O 3 , MgO , SiO 2 , La 2 O 3 and ZrO 2 rapidly formed heterogeneous eutectic crystals under the action of SPS. The low eutectic compounds significantly promoted the diffusion of h-BN or ZrO 2 , also increased the density. The flexural strength of h-BN/ZrO 2 composites could reach 196.31 MPa, and the apparent porosity was only 0.42 %. The additives are combined with zirconia to form a high viscosity eutectic, whose corrosion resistance to molten steel is obviously better than that of single ZrO 2 . The corrosion depth of h-BN/ZrO 2 composites was only 114 µm after corroded in molten steel at 1550 °C for 80 min. The comprehensive properties of h-BN/ZrO 2 composites were obviously improved by appropriate additives.

Enhancing thermal conductivity of epoxy composites via f-BN@f-MgO hybrid fillers assisted by hot pressing

Xudong Wu,Haojie Yu,Li Wang,Xingguang Meng,Zhikun Huang,Xiaowei Liu,Xiaodan Gong,Jinyi Liu

High thermal conductive polymeric composites are extremely desired for the thermal management of electronic devices due to the rapid development of the modern microelectronic industry. Herein, the functionalized boron nitride (BN) and magnesium oxide (MgO) hybrid fillers (f-BN@f-MgO) were synthesized and used to prepare the enhanced thermal conductive epoxy (EP) composites through the hot-pressing method. The results demonstrated that the covalent binding of BN and MgO in the hybrid fillers reduced the interface thermal resistance effectively between fillers and matrix and the hot-pressing induced force facilitated the construction of the continuous thermal conduction paths. Consequently, the as-prepared epoxy composite at 40 wt% hybrid fillers loading had high thermal conductivity (TC) (1.97 W/[m·K]), outstanding insulating performance (6.9 × 10 15 Ω cm) and excellent thermal stability. Furthermore, a probable thermal conduction mechanism was proposed to illustrate the high TC of the epoxy composite. Therefore, this study provides a new approach to preparing epoxy composites with outstanding performances.

Graphene/h-BN Nanosheet/Nanosphere Composites Constructed by In Situ Laser Irradiation with Synergistically Improved Tribological Performance

Wei Li,Ting Luo,Changxu Zhu,Bin Zhang,Bingqiang Cao

Graphene/hexagonal boron nitride nanocomposites with different dimensions have great application prospects in the field of lubrication due to their unique layered structure and excellent mechanical properties. However, due to their complex synthesis process, easy agglomeration, and poor stability, graphene/hexagonal boron nitride nanocomposites have not yet been applied in lubricating applications. Herein, a simple and green in situ laser irradiation method is proposed to construct two-dimensional (2D) reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets and zero-dimensional (0D) hexagonal boron nitride nanosphere 2D/0D nanocomposite (L-rGO/h-BN). During the one-step laser irradiation in liquid, the GO nanosheets were reduced to rGO nanosheets. Meanwhile, the hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) transformed from nanoflakes to nanospheres via a pulsed laser heating and reshaping process and embedded into the multilayer graphene nanosheets. The spherical h-BN nanoparticles as interlayer support can maintain the 2D graphene with a more stable layered structure, while the insertion of graphene sheets also effectively inhibits the agglomeration of the spherical h-BN nanoparticles. Therefore, a hierarchical 2D/0D layered rGO/h-BN nanocomposite was formed. Importantly, such composite nanoparticles can well disperse in the lubricating oil without significant precipitation for over 30 days and show remarkably improved tribological performance. This is due to the synergistic lubricant effect of the deposition repair effect from rGO nanosheets reducing wear and micro-bearing effect from h-BN nanospheres reducing friction by changing sliding friction into rolling friction.
