Graphical A sol-gel assisted solid-phase method was employed to prepare BaTiO 3 doped with varying Ta 5+ doping amounts. The results showed that Ta 5+ doped into the BaTiO 3 lattice and caused lattice distortion when the heat treatment temperature reached 1052.7 °C. The 1.25 mol %Ta 5+ -doped BaTiO 3 exhibited the best activity of photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production, which was 2.4 times that of BaTiO 3 . BaTiO 3 , as a perovskite type material with excellent chemical stability and suitable conduction, has been widely studied in the field of photocatalysis. However, it can only absorb ultraviolet light because of its wide band gap. Herein, the lifetime of photogenerated electrons of BaTiO 3 doped with Ta 5+ can be enhanced. To study the band structure and photocatalytic performance of Ta-doped BaTiO 3 , sol-gel assisted solid-phase method was employed to prepare BaTiO 3 doped with varying Ta 5+ doping amounts, and the structure characteristic and formation mechanism of the Ta-doped BaTiO 3 were analyzed. The results showed that the heat treatment temperature reached 1052.7 °C, sufficient thermodynamic conditions were obtained for Ta 5+ to dope into the BaTiO 3 lattice, and lattice distortion occurred in BaTiO 3 . Meanwhile, the particle size after doping decreased with the increase of Ta 5+ doping amount. The 1.25 mol %Ta 5+ -doped BaTiO 3 had the lowest band gap (3.077 eV), and the photocatalytic water splitting had the best hydrogen evolution activity, which was 2.4 times that of BaTiO 3 . Furthermore, the conductance potential of 1.25 mol %Ta 5+ -doped BaTiO 3 was more negative than that of BaTiO 3 , which improved the thermodynamic advantage of the photocatalytic water splitting, and it had higher and more stable photoresponse and photogenerated carrier migration rate.

The limited energy storage density which is ascribed to low dielectric constant impedes the more diversified applications of polymer dielectric capacitors, and the environmental pollution problem caused by petroleum-based polymers cannot be ignored. Cellulose has the characteristics of wide source, low cost, and strong polarization generated by the hydroxy groups on the molecular chain giving it a high dielectric constant. In addition, nanocellulose has excellent mechanical properties that enable it to be fabricated into homogeneous films with high tensile strength. In this work, barium titanate nanoparticles (BTNPs) were incorporated into nanocellulose films to obtain enhanced dielectric performance. The composite film has the best comprehensive performance with BTNP content of 0.9 wt.%, resulting in a discharge energy density of 5.21 J cm −3 and charge/discharge efficiency of 77.7% at 350 MV m −1 . Consequently, nanocellulose-based dielectric materials give great promise for applications in biopolymer-based dielectric capacitors. Graphical abstract

BaTiO 3 , Ba(Ti 0.2 Zr 0.2 Sn 0.2 Hf 0.2 Nb 0.2 )O 3 , SrTiO 3 , Sr(Ti 0.2 Zr 0.2 Sn 0.2 Hf 0.2 Nb 0.2 )O 3 , (Sr 0.5 Ba 0.5 )TiO 3 and (Sr 0.5 Ba 0.5 )(Ti 0.2 Zr 0.2 Sn 0.2 Hf 0.2 Nb 0.2 )O 3 ceramic samples were prepared using a traditional solid-state reaction method. XRD analysis shows that all the samples are a single-phase perovskite structure. After the addition of B-site high-entropy components Sn 4+ , Zr 4+ , Hf 4+ , and Nb 5+ in BaTiO 3 , the permittivity and dielectric loss decrease significantly, and the temperature stability of the permittivity is remarkably improved. Compared with the undoped sample, the insulation resistance of the high-entropy ceramic sample increases exponentially. The incorporation of high entropy components changes the conduction mechanism, improves the insulation performance, and significantly decreases thermal conductivity, which improves the adiabatic performance of ceramics. These results demonstrate that the high entropy strategy can significantly influence the electrical and thermal properties of BaTiO 3 and SrTiO 3 -based ceramics. Our work provides a new idea for the modification of functional ceramic materials and offers new promising candidates of dielectrics applied for Class-I type ceramic capacitors.

In this work, we report a new generation of single microbead bioassay that employs a single BaTiO3 microbead as an optical booster for target biomarker enrichment and optical enhancement toward protein and nucleic acid analysis. The single BaTiO3 microbead can not only concentrate the target molecules by nearly 104-fold but also act as an optical booster to prominently enhance the target-induced fluorescence signal by the whispering gallery mode for improving the excitation efficiency and the microlens effect for promoting the signal collecting efficiency, respectively. Compared with using a conventional single microbead, this optical booster exhibits nearly 2 orders of magnitude higher sensitivity without the assistance of any signal amplification techniques or costly instruments. Moreover, this single microbead optical booster is capable of detecting different kinds of protein and nucleic acid biomarkers in a simple mix-and-read manner, holding great potential for early clinical diagnosis.

The use of environmentally friendly aqueous tape casting has emerged as a promising route for fabricating high-quality BaTiO 3 -based films, particularly for ultra-thin multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). In this study, a high-solids-content BaTiO 3 slurry was formulated using APC (a polycarboxylate ammonium salt) as the dispersant, WB4101 as the acrylic binder, and PL002 as the plasticizer. The resulting 9.50 μm green tape exhibited a high density (3.65 g/cm 3 ), tensile strength (7.65 MPa), and fracture strain (11%), indicating good mechanical integrity. BaTiO 3 -based MLCC chips prepared from this tape showed a room-temperature capacitance of ∼28.0 nF and a dielectric loss of 0.02. Comprehensive evaluations of temperature coefficient of capacitance (TCC), ferroelectric hysteresis, DC-bias-dependent dielectric behavior, and resistivity degradation under accelerated DC stress were conducted. Notably, the TCC satisfied the X7R specification (−55 °C to 125 °C, ΔC/C 25 °C ≤ ±15%), confirming excellent dielectric temperature stability. Ferroelectric hysteresis characteristics, DC-bias-dependent dielectric stability, and resistance to degradation collectively demonstrate the excellent electrical reliability of the material. These results demonstrate that the proposed aqueous tape casting system is effective for producing reliable, high-performance BaTiO 3 -based MLCCs and provides a practical pathway for future development of lead-free, eco-friendly capacitor technologies.

Dielectric capacitors, which can achieve tremendous power density and ultrafast charge/discharge speed, are crucial components for high power equipment. Yet, the synchronous achievement in high recoverable energy density ( W rec ) and high efficiency ( η ) is a long-term difficulty for dielectric ceramics. Herein, the (0.85 − x )NaNbO 3 –0.15BaTiO 3 – x Bi(Mg 1/3 Ta 2/3 )O 3 (NN–BT– x BMT) relaxor ferroelectric ceramics were proposed and studied. The doping of BMT was conducive to promoting the microstructure and bandgap and improving the dielectric relaxation properties of NN–BT ceramics. Finally, the sample of x = 0.10 presented a high W rec of 5.9 J/cm 3 and a high η of 90% simultaneously. In addition, the sample also exhibited superb charge/discharge performances with large power density ( P D = 137 MW/cm 3 ) and fast charge/discharge speed ( t 0.9 = 39 ns). The above results reveal that the NaNbO 3 -based ceramics could serve as potential alternatives for advanced dielectric capacitors.

The utilization of alkyl radicals (•R) for hypoxic tumor therapy has great prospects due to its O2-independence and high reactivity. However, correlational initiators for in vivo activation remain scarce. Here, we report that ultrasound excitation of oleic acid-capped BaTiO3 (OA@BaTiO3) can result in an •R cascade and hence a means to conquer hypoxic tumors. Mechanistic studies find that the •R signal disappears when OA@BaTiO3 undergoes acid washing post-treatment, which is a common procedure for removing the unwanted byproduct BaCO3. Combined with the infrared spectrum analysis, acid treatment was proven to weaken the peaks at 2840–2970 cm–1 characteristic of -CH2- and terminal -CH3 stretching vibration of OA. There is compelling evidence that high temperature thermal oxidation of OA involves the generation of •R. Thus, acid washing is considered to remove the loosely bound yet catalytically active OA. And piezoelectric BaTiO3, a potential electron–hole redox catalyst, can sensitize these OA molecules and disintegrate them to •R. This unexpected discovery provides us with a distinctive mentality to seek diverse •R initiators for tumor ablation, as well as an additional perspective on the postprocessing of synthetic materials.

The prime advantage of BaTiO 3 for energy-storage applications is its compatibility with reducing-atmosphere sintering processes, a well-developed technology that allows cost-effective co-firing with Ni electrodes. Nevertheless, the high hysteresis and low breakdown strength of BaTiO 3 limit its broader applications in energy-storage devices. In this work, core-shell structured BaTiO 3 @ZrO 2 ceramics are synthesized by a sol-gel method, with particular attention paid to the effects of coating time on the microstructure and energy storage properties. The introduction of ZrO 2 layer significantly increases the breakdown strength of BaTiO 3 ceramics. When the coating duration is 5 h, a high discharge energy density of 2.09 J/cm 3 is obtained, representing a fourfold enhancement over pure BaTiO 3 ceramics. Additionally, the BaTiO 3 @ZrO 2 ceramics exhibit an excellent energy storage stability against DC-bias, temperature, and frequency. This work provides a feasible way to optimize the energy storage properties of ferroelectric ceramics.

Ba 0.85- x (Bi 0.58 Na 0.42 ) x Ca 0.15 Ti 0.85 Zr 0.15 O 3 (BCTZ- x BN) was employed as the research focus to modulate grain size, lattice distortion, and defect concentration by adjusting the BN content, thereby regulating energy storage performance. The influence mechanisms of grain size, lattice distortion, and defect concentration on energy storage performance were investigated through experimental and numerical calculations. Experimental characterization (XRD diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and impedance testing) and theoretical analysis (V-F model, macroscopic and phenomenological models, and Landau Devonshire theory) revealed that the polar nanoregions (PNRs) induced by lattice distortion and charge defects improved energy storage efficiency. Finite element simulation and impedance analysis indicate that fine grain size and fewer charge defects contribute to improved breakdown strength. As a result, the W rec and η of the modified samples were significantly improved by 6 and 1.7 times, respectively. This work provides insights into the design of high-performance ceramic capacitors and establishes a theoretical framework for understanding the energy storage mechanism.

Single component semiconductor materials with piezoelectric response can promote the activation of hydrogen ions (H + ) and the generation of hydrogen (H 2 ) under the action of mechanical force, but the high recombination rate of carriers is the major obstacle to strengthen piezocatalytic efficiency. Here, a groundbreaking Bi 2 MoO 6 -BaTiO 3 (BMO-BTO) Type-I heterojunction piezocatalyst is successfully fabricated through a solvothermal strategy, and applied for cocatalysts-free piezocatalytic H 2 production reaction. Under ultrasonic vibration, the H 2 production rate of BMO-0.1BTO heterojunction can reach up to nearly 152.57 µmol/g/h, which is approximately 9.33 and 4.47 times with respect to that of pristine BMO (16.36 µmol/g/h) and BTO (34.16 µmol/g/h) alone, respectively. Furthermore, BMO is also combined with other commonly used piezocatalysts to construct heterojunctions, and analogous marvelous piezocatalytic H 2 production performance was attained. The enhanced piezocatalytic H 2 production performance can be credited to the established built-in electric field (BIEF) in heterojunction extraordinarily suppressed the recombination rates of piezocarriers, rather than an increase in piezoelectricity, which is emphatically verified through a series of physics and chemical characterizations. This study presents an innovative paradigm for fabricating BMO-based heterojunction piezocatalyst to efficiently convert mechanical energy into chemical energy.

Improving mechanical quality factor Q m is of great significance for high-power applications. Here, a new strategy of the [111] c texture engineering was proposed to enhance the performances of high-power piezoelectric ceramics. The 5 vol% BaTiO 3 (BT) templates with the [111] c preferred orientation were introduced into matrix powders of 0.03 Pb(Mn 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 –0.33Pb(Ni 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 –0.28 PbZrO 3 –0.36PbTiO 3 (28PZ(R)) to form the [111] c textured ceramics (28PZ(T)), possessing a texture degree of 74 %. The multiple of uniform density in EBSD increased from 0.63 in randomly oriented 28 PZ(R) to 6.63 in 28PZ(T). The good lattice matching between BT templates and textured grains was observed using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, confirming the microscopic origin of the [111] c texture. The maximum phase angle θ max of 88.2° was quite near 90° in 28PZ(T), ensuring the optimal Q m value of 1275 and the great figure of merit of 255,000 pC/N. The increased Q m in [111] c texture ceramics was confirmed due to the reduced intrinsic polarization directions rather than the pinning effect of the internal bias field. Larger grain sizes with larger domains restrained the movement of domain walls in 28 PZ(T), which was also favorable to higher Q m . This work may provide a new promising route for further high-power applications.

Piezocatalysis, the direct conversion of mechanical energy into chemical reactivity, offers a promising route for sustainable pollutant removal and chemical synthesis. However, practical applications require materials that are able to simultaneously deliver high activity, stability, and ease of recycling. Here, we report a flexible micro-nano-engineered BaTiO 3 /PVDF@Ag composite film, whereby {111} BaTiO 3 single-crystal microsheets are embedded in a poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix and decorated with photo-deposited Ag nanoparticles. This BaTiO 3 /PVDF@Ag composite microstructure design endows the optimal composite with outstanding piezocatalytic performance, including a Rhodamine B degradation rate constant of 0.24 min −1 , a hydrogen peroxide generation rate of 3520 µmol g −1 h −1 , and a CO 2 reduction rate of 535 µmol g −1 h −1 , while maintaining its activity over repeated cycles. Systematic structural, spectroscopic, and electrochemical characterization, together with theoretical simulations, reveal that the ferroelectric BaTiO 3 and electroactive β -phase PVDF enhance the local piezoelectric potential under mechanical stimulation, while the Ag nanoparticles act as efficient electron traps and catalytic sites. Interfacial polarization as resulting from the dielectric and conductivity mismatches between the composite components also reduces charge-transfer resistance and thereby accelerates carrier separation and migration. These synergistic effects enable efficient formation of reactive oxygen species, thereby driving high H 2 O 2 yields and CO 2 reduction. The mechanically robust film can also be easily recovered and reused, demonstrating a viable route to green, high-performance piezocatalysts for environmental applications.
