Recently, there has been growing interest in developing Bi3+-activated luminescence materials for optoelectronic applications. Herein, new yellow/orange-emitting ABZn2Ga2O7:Bi3+ (ABZGO, A = Ca, Sr; B = Ba, Sr) phosphors with tunable optical properties are synthesized by an alkaline earth cation substitution. When Sr2+ substitutes Ca2+ and Ba2+, the excitation wavelength has a red shift from 325 to 363 nm, matching well with the n-UV chip based white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). CaBaZn2Ga2O7:0.01Bi3+ (CBZGO:0.01Bi3+) exhibits two evident emission peaks at 570 and 393 nm originating from the respective occupation of Ca and Ba sites by Bi3+ ions. The optical tuning of the CBZGO:Bi3+ phosphor is achieved by changing the Bi3+ doping content and excitation wavelength based on the selected site occupation. Differently, both SrBaZn2Ga2O7:0.01Bi3+ (SBZGO:0.01Bi3+) and Sr2Zn2Ga2O7:0.01Bi3+ (SZGO:0.01Bi3+) phosphors exhibit a single broad emission band, peaking at 600 and 577 nm, respectively. Two different Bi3+ sites are also verified respectively in SBZGO and SZGO hosts by the Gaussian fitting of the asymmetric PL spectra and lifetime analysis. The different luminescence behaviors of ABZGO:0.01Bi3+ phosphors should be ascribed to the synergistic effect of the centroid shift, crystal-field splitting, and Stokes shift. Moreover, the temperature-dependent PL spectra reveal that cation substitutions of Sr2+ for Ca2+ and Ba2+ can efficiently improve the thermal stability of ABZGO:0.01Bi3+ phosphors. In view of different thermal responses to various temperatures for two emission peaks of the CBZGO:0.01Bi3+ phosphor, an optical thermometer is designed and has a good relative sensitivity (Sr = 1.453% K–1) at 298 K. Finally, a WLED with CRI = 97.9 and CCT = 3932 K is obtained by combining SZGO:0.01Bi3+ and BAM:Eu2+ phosphors with a 370 nm n-UV chip, demonstrating that SZGO:0.01Bi3+ is an excellent yellow-orange-emitting phosphor for n-UV WLED devices. This work stimulates the exploration of optical tuning by cation substitution to obtain remarkable luminescence materials for optical temperature sensing and WLED applications.

Trivalent bismuth (Bi3+) has been regarded as a favorable emitting center since it can give off light of different wavelengths from ultraviolet (UV) to red in different host materials. These Bi3+ single-doped phosphors have been of great interest for applications in white light-emitting diodes (LEDs), optical information storage and anti-counterfeiting. However, it still remains a challenge to achieve multimodal luminescence in Bi3+ activated single-component inorganic luminescent materials for multifunctional applications. Here, Bi3+ single-doped Sr3Sc2Ge3O12 phosphors with dual-mode luminescence, emitting narrowband cyan photoluminescence and long-lasting ultraviolet-A (UVA) persistent luminescence, are reported for the first time by selective site occupation of a Bi3+ emitter. Intense cyan photoluminescence peaking at 487 nm when excited at 386 nm is assigned to the Bi3+ in the Sr2+ site, which shows very good luminescence thermal stability. Moreover, after UV excitation at 254 nm or under sunlight irradiation, UVA persistent luminescence with a peak maximum at 333 nm and a long persistence time of more than 12 h is achieved, which can be attributed to the Bi3+ in the Sc3+ site. The dual-mode luminescence in a Bi3+ single-doped Sr3Sc2Ge3O12 garnet not only provides a directional solution for constructing warm white LEDs, but also holds great promise for optical information write-in and read-out applications.

Red-emitting phosphors are indispensable compounds which are used to achieve a warm white light in phosphor-converted white light emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs). However, the luminous efficiency and stability of red phosphors are still big challenges. In this work, we developed red-emitting double perovskite phosphors La2ATiO6:Bi3+,Mn4+ (A = Mg, Zn) (LAT:Bi3+,Mn4+) and discuss the relationship between the double perovskite phosphor structure and the luminescence performance in detail. According to the Rietveld refinement results for the La2Mg(1−w)ZnwTiO6:Bi3+,Mn4+ (0 ≤ w ≤ 1) (LM(1−w)ZwT:Bi3+,Mn4+) solid solution, the proposed mechanism of the spectral adjustment is ascribed to the appearance of the phase transition, which results in a lower local structural symmetry of the [LaO12] polyhedron and the variation of the crystal field environment for Mn4+. Notably, this is the first time that the influence of the local structure variation on the luminescence tuning in double perovskite structure phosphors has been revealed, and this could offer guidance for the development of new phosphor system. By designing Mg2+/Zn2+ cation substitution, the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) is remarkably enhanced beyond 20%. In addition, we succeeded in achieving a Bi3+/Mn4+ co-doped energy transfer in the double perovskite structure phosphors. Owing to the Bi3+ → Mn4+ energy transfer in LAT, the red emission of the Mn4+ ions could be dramatically enhanced. The energy transfer efficiency of LAT:Bi3+,Mn4+ eventually exceeded 90%. The IQE and the thermal stability were all enhanced by around 30% compared to the non-co-doped samples, respectively. These results indicate that the Bi3+ → Mn4+ energy transfer strategy could play a pivotal role in the development of highly efficient red-emitting phosphors. The performance of the fabricated pc-WLEDs devices indicates that LAT:Bi3+,Mn4+ could be a promising red phosphor for near ultraviolet (n-UV) based warm pc-WLEDs.

Building upon the Ln 2 Zr 3 (MoO 4 ) 9 (Ln = La, Pr, Sm, Eu, Gd) molybdate system, this study strategically employs (Bi 0.5 Ta 0.5 ) 4+ co-substitution at Zr 4+ sites to achieve a enhancement in quality factor ( Q×f ), concurrently reducing optimal sintering temperatures for La- (725 °C) and Sm-based (725 °C) systems compared to their pristine counterparts. Comprehensive structural characterization through X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and electron microscopy confirms the formation of phase-pure solid solutions with enhanced densification (relative density >95%), while bond valence analysis reveals that Ln-O bonds predominantly govern ionic characteristics ( f i >78%), whereas Mo-O interactions critically determine lattice energy and thermal expansion coefficients. The engineered Ln 2 [Zr 0.89 (Bi/Ta) 0.11 ] 3 (MoO 4 ) 9 ceramics exhibit microwave dielectric properties tailored by lanthanide ionic radii: La-system demonstrates εᵣ = 10.97,Q×f = 135,333 GHz,τf = −29.74 ppm/°C; Sm-system achieves εᵣ = 11.46, Q×f = 157,465 GHz, τf = -30.96 ppm/°C; Gd-system yields εᵣ = 11.63, Q×f = 157,280 GHz, τf = −30.60 ppm/°C.Notably, sintering temperature reduction is particularly pronounced in Eu-system (675 °C, εᵣ = 11.49, Q×f = 87,850 GHz, τf = −35.59 ppm/°C), attributed to the synergistic effects of bond polarizability enhancement and lattice energy optimization. These results establish a universal ion-substitution paradigm for developing advanced ULTCC materials with simultaneously improved Q×f and reduced processing temperatures (<725 °C), demonstrating significant potential for millimeter-wave communication applications. Through ion substitution, these materials all have low sintering temperatures and high Q×f values, making them ideal candidates for low-temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC).

The development of highly efficient and thermally stable Bi 3+ -activated phosphors has emerged as a central focus in current research on phosphor materials. Based on the Bi 3+ -based metal-to-metal charge transfer (MMCT) transition and the characteristic of possessing a rigid crystal structure, this study successfully designed a yellow-emitting phosphor, designated as CaBaTa 2 O 7 :Bi 3+ , which exhibits high quantum efficiency and excellent thermal stability. The crystal structure, electronic structure, and luminescent properties of CaBaTa 2 O 7 :Bi 3+ were systematically investigated. Upon near-ultraviolet excitation, CaBaTa 2 O 7 :Bi 3+ emits bright yellow light centered at 552 nm, with a quantum efficiency of 96 % and thermal stability of 81 %@150 °C. The luminescence mechanism of CaBaTa 2 O 7 :Bi 3+ was explored through structural analysis, spectral characterization, and theoretical calculations, confirming that the luminescence originates from the Bi–Ta MMCT transition. Furthermore, the practical applicability of CaBaTa 2 O 7 :Bi 3+ was evaluated via WLED device packaging and hydrolysis tests. The results demonstrate that CaBaTa 2 O 7 :Bi 3+ holds significant promise for application in WLED technology.

Both Al 3+ and Y 3+ ions co-doped Na 4 CaSi 3 O 9 :Bi 3+ ,Eu 3+ (NCSO:Bi 3+ ,Eu 3+ ) series phosphors were synthesized by a high temperature solid-phase method, and characterized by various advanced structural and spectral instruments. The impact of different doping ion concentrations on the luminescent behavior of the phosphors was also investigated. It is found that an ion substitution strategy is useful for enhancing the luminescence performance of the as-obtained NCSO:Bi 3+ ,Eu 3+ phosphors. The results show that doping a certain amount of Al 3+ ions into the NCSO:0.01Bi 3+ ,0.1Eu 3+ phosphor leads to a significant red-shift in the blue emission spectrum of Bi 3+ up from 350 to 405 nm and an increase in the half-peak width by 21 nm, better spectral match for plant response. Furthermore, doping Y 3+ ions into the matrix also enhances the sensitization effect of Bi 3+ ions, resulting in a significant increase in luminous intensity. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) was used to verify the crystal structure and phase purity of the synthesized phosphors. The mechanism of Al 3+ and Y 3+ doping affecting the emission spectrum is further discussed through the structure refinement. Finally, by comparing with the absorption spectra of plant growth pigments, it is found that the developed phosphors show great potential in promoting light controlling for plant growth.

The single-component white light emission microcrystals were synthesized in Bi 3+ /Sb 3+ /Ho 3+ ions tri-doped Cs 2 Ag 0.2 Na 0.8 LuCl 6 double perovskites by a simple precipitation method. In Bi 3+ /Sb 3+ ions double-doped Cs 2 Ag 0.2 Na 0.8 LuCl 6 microcrystals, the tunable emission from yellow (Bi 3+ ) to blue (Sb 3+ ) can be achieved under ultraviolet light excitation. Particularly, the white light emission is obtained after doping Ho 3+ ion because of the energy transfer processes of Bi 3+ →Ho 3+ and Sb 3+ →Ho 3+ . The chromaticity coordinates (CIE) of Cs 2 Ag 0.2 Na 0.8 LuCl 6 :5 mol% Bi 3+ ,1 mol% Sb 3+ ,15 mol% Ho 3+ microcrystal are (0.3354, 0.3394) under 315 nm excitation. Meanwhile, the white light emissions with different color temperatures are obtained through varying the excitation wavelength (255–365 nm). Additionally, temperature-dependent fluorescence spectra show that the emission intensity of Bi 3+ /Sb 3+ /Ho 3+ tri-doped Cs 2 Ag 0.2 Na 0.8 LuCl 6 microcrystal at 423 K remains 54% of that at 303 K. Moreover, the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of 641 and 665 nm is highly temperature-dependent, the relative sensitivity ( S r ) reaches 1.06%/K at 303 K under 315 nm excitation. Simultaneously, the microcrystal shows thermochromism phenomenon, and the emission changes from white to blue-purple with the increase of temperature from 303 to 513 K. The novel temperature sensing is achieved based on CIE coordinates and temperature technology in Cs 2 Ag 0.2 Na 0.8 LuCl 6 :5 mol% Bi 3+ ,1 mol% Sb 3+ ,15 mol% Ho 3+ microcrystal by exciting at 315 nm. The corresponding maximum S r is 0.34%/K. Accordingly, Bi 3+ /Sb 3+ /Ho 3+ ions tri-doped Cs 2 Ag 0.2 Na 0.8 LuCl 6 double perovskite has potential applications in the fields of white light emitting diode and optical temperature sensing.

The high-temperature solid-state method synthesized novel double perovskite CaSrLaSbO 6 : Bi 3+ , Mn 4+ phosphors. Its crystal structure, luminescence properties, crystal field strength, energy transfer process, and temperature-sensitive properties were comprehensively investigated. The band gap values of CaSrLaSbO 6 were calculated using density functional theory. In the CaSrLaSbO 6 host, Bi 3+ exhibits multiple emission properties in the violet, blue, and NIR regions due to the 3 P 1 → 1 S 0 transition, while the red emission is due to the 2 E g → 4 A 2g transition of Mn 4+ . Light-converting films fabricated using CaSrLaSbO 6 :Bi 3+ , Mn 4+ under 302 nm UV excitation with multiple emissions showed significant plant growth promotion. In addition, the optical temperature-dependent response of CaSrLaSbO 6 : Bi 3+ , Mn 4+ was analyzed using the luminescence intensity ratio technique, and the relative sensitivity of the best samples reached 2.1 % K −1 . The above results indicate that CaSrLaSbO 6 : Bi 3+ , Mn 4+ provides almost all the light sources necessary for plant growth and can be applied in the field of optical temperature sensors, which shows that this multifunctional phosphor has great potential for application.

The realization of tunable multicolor luminescence especially full-spectrum white-light emission in a single matrix has aroused more attention from researchers. To address the above challenge, Bi 3+, and Tb 3+ are selected as both activators and sensitizers with the help of energy level matching engineering of Bi 3+ and Tb 3+ having matching energy levels with Eu 3+ , a series of 1D Y 4 Al 2 O 9 :Bi 3+ , Bi 3+ /Eu 3+ , Tb 3+ , Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ and Bi 3+ /Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ nanofibers (NFs) are designed and synthesized by a simple electrospinning technique combined with an oxidative calcination. Under 298-nm UV light excitation, Y 4 Al 2 O 9 :Bi 3+ /Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ NFs demonstrate tunable multicolor luminescence (blue, purple, red, green, yellow, and white) especially full-spectrum white-light emission via double energy transfer (ET) effect and modulation of molar ratio among Bi 3+ , Tb 3+ and Eu 3+ . Additionally, Y 4 Al 2 O 9 :3%Bi 3+ /7%Tb 3+ /1%Eu 3+ NFs are sensitive to temperature, and the maximum S α and S γ values of Y 4 Al 2 O 9 :3%Bi 3+ /7%Tb 3+ /1%Eu 3+ NFs reach 0.0417 K −1 and 0.84% K −1 , respectively. In virtue of electrospinning, triple activators (Bi 3+ , Tb 3+ , and Eu 3+ ) are readily and uniformly doped in Y 4 Al 2 O 9 NFs single matrix to achieve dual function of tunable multicolor luminescence and temperature sensing. The formation principle and luminescence theory of the samples are clarified. The findings in this work are instructive to develop multicolor luminescent phosphors and temperature-sensing materials.

Nowadays, ultraviolet (UV) and blue converted phosphors have played a key role in the solid-state lighting field, and the white light is usually produced by mixing multiple phosphors. In this work, we report a type of UV converted single white phosphor, i.e. , Ba 9 La 2 Si 6 O 24 :Eu 3+ ,Bi 3+ .Various techniques, such as powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopic (SEM), photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and quantum efficiency (QE), have been used to characterize the samples. In Bi 3+ doped samples, upon excitation within the wavelength range of 250–380 nm can lead to three Bi 3+ emission bands ( i.e. , 358 nm, 415 nm, and 516 nm), but only one emission band peaking at 415 nm appears when the excitation wavelength exceeds 380 nm. Structural analysis and discussion on the PL intensity variation reveal there are three Bi 3+ luminescent centers at two different La 3+ sites and one Ba 2+ site. The Bi 3+ concentration-induced luminescent quenching is dominated by the d-d interaction. In view of the spectral overlap between the Bi 3+ emissions and the Eu 3+ excitation spectra , the energy transfer from Bi 3+ to Eu 3+ of the Ba 9 La 2 Si 6 O 24 :Eu 3+ ,Bi 3+ is studied, and it is dominated by a dipole-quadrupole ( d - q ) interaction. Moreover, upon excitation at 365 nm, the emissions broadly tuning from blue, white and to red are achieved by varying the Eu 3+ content. For the white Ba 9 La 2 Si 6 O 24 :Eu 3+ ,Bi 3+ sample, high temperature PL results show that it does not have severe degradation of emission intensity after increasing the temperature from 25 to 300 °C, exhibiting a good thermal stability . To show the potential application in the lighting fields, we fabricate a white light LEDs device by depositing this white phosphor on a 365 nm UV LED chip. As a result, the values, i.e. , a color rendering index (CRI) of 95, luminous efficiency of 80 lm/W, and color temperature (CT) of ~4215 K at chromaticity (0.382, 0.398), are achieved.

The separation of photogenerated carriers and the efficient utilization of high-level energy electrons (HLEEs) are the key processes for improving the performance of photocatalysts. Herein, Ce 2 Ti 2 O 7 /ZnIn 2 S 4 (CTOZIS) and Bi 3+ -doped Ce 2 Ti 2 O 7 /ZnIn 2 S 4 (BCTOZIS) photocatalyst were successfully synthesized through hydrothermal method . The photocatalytic hydrogen production of CTOZIS and BCTOZIS was 1233.7 μmol g −1 and 4168.5 μmol g −1 under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm) within 5 h, which was 2.3 and 7.6 times than that of pure ZnIn 2 S 4 , respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy and electrochemical characterization demonstrated that after Bi 3+ doping, the electron-hole pairs recombination of BCTOZIS was inhibited, which may be ascribed to the establishment of a Z-scheme heterojunction and the presence of oxygen vacancy and Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ redox center. The doping of Bi 3+ resulted in the adjustment of the valence band position of Ce 2 Ti 2 O 7 from 1.98 V to 1.92 V. This adjustment enabled direct transfer of HLEEs generated in Ce 2 Ti 2 O 7 to the conduction band of ZnIn 2 S 4 for hydrogen production with a wavelength below 423 nm. The synergistic effect of conventional Z-scheme electron transfer and the unique utilization of HLEEs boosted the photocatalytic performance of BCTOZIS. This study affords an innovative insight for designing visible-light-driven photocatalysts with high photocatalytic activity .

Reabsorption and color drift at high temperature hinder the high-quality application of the phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs) devices, thus it is urgent to develop the single-phase white-emitting phosphors with good chromatic stability. In this work, a series of color-tunable Y 3 TaO 7 :Bi 3+ , Eu 3+ phosphors are designed by co-doping Bi 3+ and Eu 3+ based on the crystal structure information and energy transfer principle between Bi 3+ and Eu 3+ , which can be adjusted to achieve single-phase white emission. By increasing the temperature to a high value of 473 K, the emission peak of Bi 3+ ions still present at 470 nm in Y 3 TaO 7 :Bi 3+ phosphors even when the concentration of Bi 3+ ions changes, and the characteristic emission peaks of Bi 3+ and Eu 3+ basically maintain unchanged throughout in Y 3 TaO 7 :Bi 3+ , Eu 3+ phosphors. Finally, the single-phased Y 3 TaO 7 :0.025Bi 3+ , 0.06Eu 3+ phosphor was employed with ultraviolet chip to produce a warm WLED device with color rendering index of 81.5, correlated color temperature of 4165 K and the Commission International de I′Eclairage chromaticity coordinates of (0.3645, 0.3347). The results indicate that Y 3 TaO 7 :Bi 3+ , Eu 3+ phosphors with high chromaticity stability have great application potential in full-spectrum WLEDs.
