Preparation of Biochar-Supported N,S-BiOBr Photocatalytic Material and Optimization of Its Performance for Tetracycline Degradation

Nianping Chi,Yang Luo,Zhenwen Yang,Yuanping Li,Zhenyu Wang,Jun Zhou

Biochar was synthesized through high-temperature pyrolysis, and a biochar-supported nitrogen and sulfur co-doped BiOBr (BC/N,S-BiOBr) photocatalyst was successfully prepared via a one-step solvothermal method, which was applied for the degradation of tetracycline (TC), a widely detected representative antibiotic pollutant, in aqueous solution. This study systematically investigated the effects of catalyst type, initial solution pH, catalyst dosage and initial TC concentration on the photocatalytic degradation process. The experimental results showed that the as-prepared BC/N,S-BiOBr composite exhibited a flower-like nanosphere morphology, characterized by a more complete three-dimensional hierarchical structure, larger specific surface area and suitable optical absorption band, which endowed the composite with significantly improved visible-light absorption capability. Under the optimized reaction conditions (pH = 5, catalyst dosage of 0.7 g/L, initial TC concentration of 10 mg/L), the degradation efficiency of TC over BC/N,S-BiOBr reached 98% after 50 min of visible-light irradiation. In situ electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy combined with radical quenching experiments confirmed that the modified composite contained abundant oxygen vacancies, and the main reactive species governing TC degradation were identified as photogenerated holes (h+), hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and superoxide radicals (·O2−), with their contribution to TC degradation following the order of h+> ·OH > ·O2−. In summary, by converting municipal sludge into biochar-supported N,S-BiOBr photocatalyst, the modified BC/N,S-BiOBr composite exhibits faster photocatalytic reaction kinetics and higher tetracycline removal efficiency compared with pristine BiOBr, while simultaneously enabling waste resource recovery, solar energy exploitation, and water purification, thereby comprehensively promoting sustainable development in terms of environmental remediation, resource circulation, and low-carbon operation.

CO2 reduction synergistic tetracycline degradation toward Co-BiOBr ultrathin nanosheets with rich defects and (102) active faces

Yibo Ma,Xiangyu Xu,Tianyi Yang,Yuying Shen,Feng Jiang,Yawei Zhang,Xiaoting Lv,Yunming Liu,Bo Feng,Guangbo Che,Lijing Wang

The development of bifunctional reaction by combining CO 2 reduction with antibiotics degradation is of great significance. Designing bifunctional catalysts with excellent performance is the focus of scholars' research. In this paper, Co-doped BiOBr ultra-thin nanosheets exposing rich (102) active crystal faces were prepared by one-step hydrothermal method. Since Co 2+ has a smaller radius than Bi 3+ , Co was successfully incorporated into the lattice of BiOBr, which changed the crystal structure of BiOBr and obtained thinner nanosheets with rich lattice defects. The Gibbs free energy of CO 2 reduction reaction was synergistically optimized by the combination of exposing (102) active crystal faces and introducing lattice defects. In addition, the addition of Co changed the band structure of BiOBr and improved the carrier separation ability, making Co-BiOBr be an excellent bi-functional photocatalyst for CO 2 reduction and co-degradation of tetracycline, realizing the synergistic process of environmental purification and energy conversion. This work provides theoretical and experimental reference for the rational design of bifunctional photocatalysts.

Amorphous FeOOH-mediated directional charges transfer in light-switchable oxygen vacancies BiOBr for boosting photocatalytic oxygen evolution

Fangxia Xie,Qing Xi,Mei Zhang,Rui Li,Xiaoming Gao,Houfen Li,Xiaochao Zhang,Yawen Wang,Yunfang Wang,Xiuping Yue,Jianxin Liu,Caimei Fan

Directing the transfer of photoinduced charges to various reaction sites through catalyst design plays crucial roles in enhancing photocatalytic oxygen evolution. Herein, we used a facile alcoholysis method to synthesize amorphous FeOOH modified light-switchable oxygen vacancies BiOBr, which exhibited outstanding photocatalytic oxygen evolution activity. Density functional theory calculations, photoelectronchemical tests and kelvin probe force microscopy revealed that FeOOH overlayer acts as the hole storage layer, while oxygen vacancies (OVs) provided a number of electron trap centers. Benefiting from this synergistic effect, the photogenerated charges showed an outstanding directional transfer performance, which greatly prolong the lifetime of the photo-induced charge carriers. Moreover, as a cocatalyst for water oxidation, FeOOH can effectively lower the kinetics barriers and provide more active sites for oxygen evolution reaction. Therefore, under simulated sunlight irradiation, the 2%FeOOH/BiOBr photocatalyst demonstrated remarkable photocatalytic activity towards oxygen evolution, achieving a rate of 284.34 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which is around 1.71 folds than pure BiOBr. Finally, the possible reaction mechanism has also been discussed. This work has provided valuable insights and inspiration for the effective design and optimization of BiOBr-based catalysts, which play a critical role in facilitating efficient directional transfer of photogenerated charges.

Acceleration of Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction at Intimate Interface in AgBr/BiOBr Heterojunctions via a Co-anion Strategy

Jing Xie,Jianguo Huang,Dilireba Turgan,Zhenjiang Lu,Jindou Hu,Yue Feng,Yali Cao

Constructing heterojunctions with strong interfacial interactions can accelerate the transfer and separation of photogenerated charge carriers. However, finding a simple strategy to construct tightly connected heterojunctions remains a major challenge. In this work, AgBr/BiOBr S-scheme heterojunctions were designed via a straightforward co-anionic strategy without using a solvent. The experimental results indicate that the AgBr/BiOBr heterojunction with a close contact interface can extend the use of visible light, accelerate the separation, and induce the transfer of photoelectrons and holes while maintaining an excellent redox capacity. Undoubtedly, the photocatalytic reduction rate of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide by 1.0 AgBr/BiOBr is 87.73 μmol·g–1·h–1 (quantum efficiency is 0.57%), which is 12.15 times and 4.45 times higher than that of pure AgBr and BiOBr, respectively. The present work provides insights into a simple strategy for the preparation of strongly interacting interfacial heterojunctions for photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Degradation of bisphenol A by Fe-doped BiOBr enhanced UV/persulfate system: Significant role of superoxide radicals

Zezheng Lin,Yang Guo,Xiaoxuan Qu,Yuying Xiang,Shuwen Shen,Xin Zhu

Widely diffused pollution of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) has indeed threatened the safety of ecological environment and human health. A hydrangea-like Fe doped BiOBr (Fe-BiOBr) microsphere was synthesized and used to enhance the performance of UV/persulfate (PS) system using bisphenol A (BPA) as the targeted contaminant. The photochemical characterization of Fe-BiOBr showed that Fe doping markedly improved the separation efficiency of photoelectron and hole, and enhanced the utility rate of luminous energy of BiOBr. Degradation test demonstrated that with the assistance of Fe-BiOBr, the efficiency of UV/PS system was increased by 1.8 times, while 85.7% of BPA can be degraded within 10 min. Through scavenging experiments, sulfate radical (SO 4 •− ), superoxide radical (O 2 •− ), and hole were demonstrated as the dominate reactive species (RSs) in UV/Fe-BiOBr/PS system. Then, the role and mutual transformation of RSs was further clarified by radicals steady-state concentrations estimation and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. Based on the results, the produced O 2 •− can be subdivided into confined O 2 •− and free O 2 •− from the UV induced oxygen vacancy and photoelectron, respectively. Of which, SO 4 •− and confined O 2 •− were symbiotic via the redox cycle of Fe species. Significantly, only 2.6% of TOC can be simultaneously removed within 10 min treatment time, suggesting the incomplete degradation of BPA. For this, 16 organics was detected using LC-MS and the degradation route of BPA was also determined based on the intermediates analysis. Finally, the application possibility of the system was evaluated from the perspective of ecotoxicity by ECOSAR and T.E.S.T. softwares. This study investigates the dual effect of transition metal doped semiconductor on coupling system, and provides new insights into the role of O 2 •− .

Dayu Li,Longfei Li,Wenchao Zhang,Chao Zhang

Construction of heterojunction can inhibit the recombination of electron holes and improve the sunlight absorption, thus improving the photocatalytic performance of semiconductors. In this research, Bi@BiOBr/ZnO coatings are in-situ grown on nickel foam by a facile hydrothermal method . Before coating deposition the nickel foam surface is modified under different radiofrequency plasma atmospheres (O2, H2/Ar, Ar, CH4) in pulsed mode. The plasma treating effects on the coating morphology, crystallization, chemical and photocatalytic properties are investigated. It is found that various morphologies of Bi@BiOBr/ZnO coatings have been grown on the plasma-treated nickel foam surface by using the different plasma atmospheres. The polycrystalline structure including Bi, BiOBr and ZnO phases has been identified for the different coatings. The photocatalytic mechanism includes the SPR effect of metal Bi which can inhibit the recombination of electron holes and heterojunction structure of BiOBr–ZnO has good effects on the photodegradation performance of MO solution under visible light .

Facile fabrication of Z-scheme Ag2WO4/BiOBr heterostructure with oxygen vacancies for improved visible-light photocatalytic performance

Shuai Fu,Yanqiang Du,Junhong Bie,Zhiquan Huang,Hai Hu,Qiang Huang,Huijie Zhu,Wei Yuan,Leicheng Li,Bo Liu

Z-scheme Ag 2 WO 4 /BiOBr heterojunction with rich oxygen vacancies was successfully synthesized by the simplest hydrothermal method, which was systematically characterized in the structural, optical and electronic properties. The photocatalytic applications of Z-scheme Ag 2 WO 4 /BiOBr heterostructure with different weight percentages of Ag 2 WO 4 were studied. The optimized Ag 2 WO 4 (20%)/BiOBr heterostructure exhibited superior photodegradation efficiencies (98%) towards Lanasol Red 5 B (LR5B), which was 4.67- and 3.38-fold higher than pristine BiOBr and Ag 2 WO 4 , respectively. The principal reason for the elevated photocatalytic property of Ag 2 WO 4 /BiOBr was ascribed to the formation of oxygen vacancies and intimate Z-scheme heterostructure between Ag 2 WO 4 and BiOBr, improving the light trapping capability and facilitating separation of photo-induced charge. Moreover, the removal efficiencies of Ag 2 WO 4 /BiOBr heterostructure towards TC (tetracycline), CIP (ciprofloxacin) and RhB (rhodamine B) were 74%, 23%, and 13%, respectively. The simultaneous degradation experiment confirmed the competitiveness between LR5B and CIP for active species, leading to the inferior degradation efficiency for LR5B, along with the experimental factor towards LR5B was researched. The probable Z-scheme mechanism and the significant role of hydroxyl radical and superoxide radicals were demonstrated by the radical capture experiment and electron spin resonance (ESR). The Z-scheme mechanism has resulted in prominent improvement in charge separation, along with higher redox properties, which were responsible for the excellent photocatalytic activity.

Enhanced photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO over BiOBr assisted by phenolic resin-based activated carbon spheres

Kangli Liu,Xiaochao Zhang,Changming Zhang,Guangmin Ren,Zhanfeng Zheng,Zhiping Lv,Caimei Fan

Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 using solar energy to decrease CO2 emission is a promising clean renewable fuel production technology. Recently, Bi-based semiconductors with excellent photocatalytic activity and carbon-based carriers with large specific surface areas and strong CO2 adsorption capacity have attracted extensive attention. In this study, activated carbon spheres (ACSs) were obtained via carbonization and steam activation of phenolic resin-based carbon spheres at 850 °C synthesized by suspension polymerization. Then, the BiOBr/ACSs sample was successfully prepared via a simple impregnation method. The as-prepared samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDX, DRS, PL, EIS, XPS, BET, CO2 adsorption isotherm and CO2-TPD. The BiOBr and BiOBr/ACSs samples exhibited high CO selectivity for photocatalytic CO2 reduction, and BiOBr/ACSs achieved a rather higher photocatalytic activity (23.74 μmol g−1 h−1) than BiOBr (2.39 μmol g−1 h−1) under simulated sunlight irradiation. Moreover, the analysis of the obtained results indicates that in this photocatalyst system, due to their higher micropore surface area and larger micropore volume, ACSs provide enough physical adsorption sites for CO2 adsorption, and the intrinsic structure of ACSs can offer effective electron transfer ability for a fast and efficient separation of photo-induced electron–hole pairs. Finally, a possible enhanced photocatalytic mechanism of BiOBr/ACSs was investigated and proposed. Our findings should provide new and important research ideas for the construction of highly efficient photocatalyst systems for the reduction of CO2 to solar fuels and chemicals.

Convenient fabrication of BiOBr ultrathin nanosheets with rich oxygen vacancies for photocatalytic selective oxidation of secondary amines

Tong Xuanjue,Cao Xing,Han Tong,Cheong Weng-Chon,Lin Rui,Chen Zheng,Wang Dingsheng,Chen Chen,Peng Qing,Li Yadong

Photocatalytic oxidation has been widely employed in organic synthesis, by virtue of the green, mild and simple reaction conditions as well as high selectivity. Introducing oxygen vacancies (OVs) with proper concentrations into the photocatalysts has been proven as an effective strategy to boost the catalytic performances. However, the currently used treatment method under high temperature at reducing atmosphere inevitably introduces a large number of OVs at the interior of the catalyst and serving as the recombination centers of carriers. To address this issue, here we develop a facile solvothermal process to prepare ultrathin BiOBr nanosheets with rich surface OVs. This method effectively decreases the bulk of the material and the ratio of interior OVs, rendering most of the OVs exposed on the surfaces which act as exposed catalytic sites and enhance the separation of carriers, therefore significantly elevates the photocatalytic performances. For the photo-oxidation reaction of secondary amines, under the conditions of visible light, ambient temperature and atmosphere, the BiOBr nanosheets featuring rich surface OVs deliver a doubled conversion compared to those with low OV concentrations, and a high selectivity of 99%, a high stability as the performance shows no reduction after 5 times of circular reaction.

The Ternary Heterostructures of BiOBr/Ultrathin g-C3N4/Black Phosphorous Quantum Dot Composites for Photodegradation of Tetracycline

Tianhao Jiang,Chaoqun Shang,Qingguo Meng,Mingliang Jin,Hua Liao,Ming Li,Zhihong Chen,Mingzhe Yuan,Xin Wang,Guofu Zhou

Herein, we synthesized BiOBr/ultrathin g-C3N4/ternary heterostructures modified with black phosphorous quantum dots using a simple water bath heating and sonication method. The ternary heterostructure was then used for the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline in visible light, with an efficiency as high as 92% after 3 h of irradiation. Thus, the photodegradation efficiency is greatly improved compared to that of ultrathin g-C3N4, BiOBr, and black phosphorous quantum dots alone. The synthesized ternary heterostructure improves the charge separation efficiency, thus increasing the photodegradation efficiency. This work provides a new and efficient method for the degradation of antibiotics in the environment. Keywords:BiOBr;ultrathin g-C3N4;black phosphorous quantum dots;photodegradation;antibiotics

A Comprehensive Strategy Enables High-Loading BiOBr@BiOIO3 Cathodes for Quasi Ah-Level Aqueous Zn-Ion Batteries

Jiajun Wan,Qian Zhang,Xu Jia,Pengfei Zhang,Yuanze Yu,Jiyang Tian,Jie Liu

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs) recently have attracted broad attention. To achieve high energy density of AZIBs, constructing high-loading cathodes is the prerequisite. However, the cycling stability of high-loading cathodes still faces great challenges. Herein, a comprehensive strategy is proposed to improve the structural stability of the cathode material and mechanical stability of the high-loading cathode. The BiOBr@BiOIO 3 heterostructure are successfully constructed via sharing the interfacial oxygen atoms, in which the interfacial effect can effectively enhance the reaction dynamics and structural stability. Meanwhile, a biomimetic binder is skillfully designed via in situ dual cross-linking between guar gum and cation ions to achieve the application of water-based and sustainable polymer binder in AZIBs. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate the guar gum possesses strong affinity toward BiOBr@BiOIO 3 to firmly adhere the active materials. Quantitative nanomechanic technology visually demonstrates the robust mechanical properties of the as-obtained BiOBr@BiOIO 3 cathode. As a result, when the active material loading increases to as high as 100.71 mg cm −2 , an ultrahigh areal capacity of 20.02 mAh cm −2 can be achieved. Specially, a quasi-Ah-level (0.244 Ah) pouch-type cell with a loading of 1.17 g can be constructed, showing the practical application potential.

Surface decoration of BiOBr with BiPO4 nanoparticles to build heterostructure photocatalysts with enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity

Meichao Gao,Dafeng Zhang,Xipeng Pu,Huiyan Ma,Changhua Su,Xin Gao,Jianmin Dou

BiPO 4 /BiOBr photocatalysts were successfully prepared via a facile in situ chemical transformation method. The X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, UV–vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence and photocurrent measurements were employed to characterize the crystal structures, morphologies, optical properties, and electron-hole separation efficiency of as-synthesized photocatalysts. BiPO 4 /BiOBr composites exhibited much higher photocatalytic activity for the degradation of Rhodamine B than pure BiOBr under visible light irradiation. The significant enhancement of photocatalytic activity could be mainly ascribed to the formation of heterojunction structure of BiPO 4 /BiOBr composite which can effectively improve electron–hole separation during photocatalytic process. Moreover, the effects of Cl − , SO 4 2− , NO 3 − and HCO 3 − anions on the photodegradation performance were investigated, and the as-synthesized BiPO 4 /BiOBr photocatalysts exhibit excellent photo-stability under visible light irradiation.
