Nanostructured BiVO4 Derived from Bi-MOF for Enhanced Visible-light Photodegradation

Chen Jianfei,Chen Xiaoyu,Zhang Xing,Yuan Yao,Bi Ruyi,You Feifei,Wang Zumin,Yu Ranbo

BiVO 4 , a promising visible-light responding photocatalyst, has aroused extensive research interest because of inexpensiveness and excellent chemical stability. However, its main drawback is the poor photoinduced charge-transfer dynamics. Building nanostructures is an effective way to tackle this problem. Herein, we put forward a new method to prepare nanostructured BiVO 4 from Bi-based metal-organic frameworks[Bi-MOF(CAU-17)] precursor. The as-prepared material has a rod-like morphology inherited from the Bi-MOF sacrificial template and consists of small nanoparticle as building blocks. Compared with its counterparts prepared by conventional methods, MOF-derived nanostructured BiVO 4 shows better light absorption ability, narrower bandgap, and improved electrical conductivity as well as reduced recombination. Consequently, BiVO 4 nanostructure demonstrates high photocatalytic activity under visible light towards the degradation of methylene blue. Methylene blue can be degraded up to 90% within 30 min with a reaction rate constant of 0.058 min −1 . Moreover, the cycling stability of the catalyst is excellent to withstand unchanged degradation efficiency for at least 5 cycles.

Organic ligand nanoarchitectonics for BiVO4 photoanodes surface passivation and cocatalyst grafting

Lin Jingyi,Li Xin,Wang Zhiliang,Liu Runlu,Pan Hui,Zhao Yixin,Kong Lingti,Li Yao,Zhu Shenmin,Wang Lianzhou

Bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) is a promising photoanode material for efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, whereas its performance is inhibited by detrimental surface states. To solve the problem, herein, a low-cost organic molecule 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (BTC) is selected for surface passivation of BiVO 4 photoanodes (BVOs), which also provides bonding sites for Co 2+ to anchor, resulting in a Co-BTC-BVO photoanode. Owing to its strong coordination with metal ions, BTC not only passivates surface states of BVO, but also provides bonding between BVO and catalytic active sites (Co 2+ ) to form a molecular cocatalyst. Computational study and interfacial charge kinetic investigation reveal that chemical bonding formed at the interface greatly suppresses charge recombination and accelerates charge transfer. The obtained Co-BTC-BVO photoanode exhibits a photocurrent density of 4.82 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a low onset potential of 0.22 V RHE under AM 1.5 G illumination, which ranks among the best photoanodes coupled with Co-based cocatalysts. This work presents a novel selection of passivation layers and emphasizes the significance of interfacial chemical bonding for the construction of efficient photoanodes.

Enhanced sulfamethazine detoxification by a novel BiOCl (110)/NrGO/BiVO4 heterojunction

Xiaofan Yang,Yutao Xu,Saraschandra Naraginti,Xueyu Wei

The emerging contaminants removal from the environment has recently been raised concerns due to their presence in higher concentrations. Over usage of emerging contaminant such as sulfamethazine poses serious threat to the aquatic and human health as well. This study deals with rationally structured a novel BiOCl (110)/NrGO/BiVO 4 heterojunction which is used to detoxify sulfamethazine (SMZ) antibiotic efficiently. The synthesised composite was well characterized and the morphological analysis evidenced the formation of heterojunction consisted of nanoplates BiOCl with dominant exposed (110) facets and leaf like BiVO 4 on NrGO layers. Further results revealed that the addition of BiVO 4 and NrGO tremendously increased the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of BiOCl with the rate of 96.9% (k = 0.01783 min −1 ) towards SMZ within 60 min of visible light irradiation. Furthermore, heterojunction energy-band theory was employed to determine the degradation mechanism of SMX in this study. The larger surface area of BiOCl and NrGO layers are believed to be the reason for higher activity which facilitates the excellent charge transfer and improved light absorption . In addition, SMZ degradation products identification was carried out by LC-ESI/MS/MS to determine the pathway of degradation. The toxicity assessment was studied using E. coli as a model microorganism through colony forming unit assay (CFU), and the results indicated a significant reduction in biotoxicity was observed in 60 min of degradation process. Thus, our work gives new methods in developing various materials that effectively treat emerging contaminants from the aqueous environment.

Photocatalytic Water Oxidation by Surface Modification of BiVO4 with Heterometallic Polyphthalocyanine

Guoquan Liu,Yong Zhu,Hua Gao,Suxian Xu,Zhibing Wen,Licheng Sun,Fei Li

Developing efficient photocatalysts for water oxidation is among the central challenges of solar energy conversion. Here, we report semiconductor–molecular photocatalysts by integration of heteronuclear bimetallic polyphthalocyanine (PPc) catalysts with particulate bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) as the photosensitizer. Their photocatalytic activity for water oxidation was modulated by tuning the Fe/Co ratio of polyphthalocyanines. At an optimal Fe/Co ratio of 3:1, the resulting Fe3CoPPc-BiVO4 hybrid exhibits an excellent oxygen evolution rate of 4557 μmol g–1 h–1 in the presence of iodate under visible light irradiation, which is nearly two orders of magnitude greater than that of pristine BiVO4 and superior to those of the corresponding homometallic counterparts. Both experimental and theoretical methods suggest that the presence of a large population of high-valent Fe/Co molecular species due to the favorable interfacial charge transfer and upshift of the d-band centers of metal sites toward Fermi level lead to a lower energy barrier for the O–O bond formation and eventually promote the oxidation of water.

Wrapping BiVO4 with chlorophyll for greatly improved photoelectrochemical performance and stability

Lv Zunyan,Meng Linxing,Cao Fengren,Li Liang

Dull surface oxygen evolution reaction (OER) dynamics seriously hinders the application of BiVO 4 (BVO) photoanodes in photoelectron-chemical (PEC) water splitting. In this study, we built an inorganic/organic hybrid photo-anode to improve the PEC performance of BVO by covering a multifunctional film. The film contains modified chlorophyll (Chl) organic compounds and Co and Si ions with a gradient distribution. The Co ions present at the interface between BVO and Chl promote the transport of photogenerated holes, and the Si ions on the surface of the photoanode enhance the hydrophilicity of PEC cells. This modified Chl film not only reduces the OER barrier and promotes carrier transfer but also inhibits loss of vanadium and increases the stability of the BVO photoanode. Finally, the modified BVO photoanode exhibits a photocurrent density of 5.1 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V RHE (RHE: reversible hydrogen electrode), and the onset potential moves 350 mV negatively in 0.5 mol L −1 Na 2 SO 4 . This article provides a general and simple surface hybrid inorganic/organic solution to improve the catalytic ability of photoanodes.

Boosting Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation with Cobalt Phosphide Nanosheets on Porous BiVO4

Haili Tong,Yi Jiang,Qian Zhang,Wenchao Jiang,Kaili Wang,Xiaoxi Luo,Ze Lin,Lixin Xia

Modification of the semiconductor surface by cobalt-rich catalysts is an effective strategy to improve the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation kinetics and migration of photogenerated electron and hole. In this study, cobalt phosphide (CoP) nanosheet was integrated on the nanoporous bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) electrode by using the hydrothermal method. The introduction of CoP significantly improved the PEC performance of the photoanode, with a photocurrent up to 4.0 mA cm–2 at 1.23 V (versus RHE) under simulated 100 mW cm–2 irradiation, a 3-fold enhancement over that obtained by the bare BiVO4. The BiVO4+CoP photoanode exhibited an impressive early onset of water oxidation, with a more than 220 mV cathodic shift of the onset potential, superior to the typical Co3O4 and Co–Pi cocatalysts-modified BiVO4 photoanode. Systematic studies show that the improvement in PEC performance by CoP is mainly due to the restraint of surface charge recombination and increase in photovoltage.

Oxygen Vacancy-Induced Dipole Moment Enhancement in BiVO 4 for Efficient Pyro-Catalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Jie Zhang,Qifeng Jia,Meng Li

Pyroelectric catalysis utilizes temperature fluctuations to drive hydrogen production reactions, but its application is limited due to the relatively weak spontaneous polarization intensity of most materials. Electron localization function (ELF) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrates that the presence of oxygen vacancies induces an asymmetric charge distribution in the BiVO4 lattice and disrupts its local symmetry. This distortion leads to an enhanced local dipole moment, thereby effectively improving the macroscopic spontaneous polarization capability. The COMSOL simulation indicates that the fluctuation of temperature difference and the pyroelectric potential exhibit a nonlinear response relationship. The polarization field induced by the pyroelectric effect effectively promotes the separation of electrons and holes, resulting in a remarkably high hydrogen evolution rate of 5.38 mmol h-1 g-1 for BiVO4-VO. This work not only provides profound atomic-level insight into the defect-mediated polarization enhancement mechanism but also establishes a practical foundation for designing high-performance pyroelectric catalysts that can efficiently harvest low-grade waste heat for sustainable hydrogen production.

Insight into a novel microwave-assisted W doped BiVO4 self-assembled sphere with rich oxygen vacancies oriented on rGO (W-BiVO4-x/rGO) photocatalyst for efficient contaminants removal

Guanshu Zhao,Jing Ding,Fanyang Zhou,Qingliang Zhao,Kun Wang,Xueqi Chen,Qingwei Gao

A novel W doped BiVO 4 with rich oxygen vacancies (OVs) oriented on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) photocatalyst (W-BiVO 4-x /rGO) was developed by a simple one-step microwave hydrothermal method for efficient removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and chlortetracycline (CTC) under visible light. The synergistic effect of W doping, BiVO 4 with OVs, and rGO on the enhancement of photocatalytic activity was clarified from experimental and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations results. W doping significantly improved the density of photo-generated charge carriers. The introduction of rGO enlarged the specific surface area, expanded the light absorption range, and promoted the charge transfer of BiVO 4 . OVs both narrowed the band gap and enhanced the generation of O 2 − . W doping and OVs both enhanced the interactions between BiVO 4 and rGO. The CIP degradation rate constant of W-BiVO 4-x /rGO photocatalyst was 1.73, 5.32, 6.43, and 10.70 times higher than those of W-BiVO 4 /rGO, BiVO 4 /rGO, W-BiVO 4 , and BiVO 4 , respectively. Besides, W-BiVO 4-x /rGO photocatalyst prepared by microwave hydrothermal method exhibited higher photocatalytic activity and better combination between materials. This study offers a new strategy to address the problem of antibiotic residues in wastewater.

Turning off the “shunt channel” by coating with CoFe layered double hydroxide nanocrystals for efficient photoelectrocatalytic water splitting

Peicheng Wei,Yan Wen,Kaifeng Lin,Xin Li

Building a photoelectrochemical cell to drive water decomposition into hydrogen and oxygen is a feasible way to access clean energy, but the unideal charge transfer path between the cocatalyst and the substrate greatly limits its application. We have developed a facile route for the preparation of a very small and highly crystalline CoFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) cocatalyst on a BiVO4 electrode through a low temperature chemical bath process. Unlike the conventional successive amorphous CoFe LDH layer coatings achieved through the electrodeposition process, the tiny and crystalline CoFe nanoparticles can close the “shunt channel” between the cocatalyst and the substrate, and the recombination of photogenerated charge caused by back-reaction is inhibited. Also, the interface between crystalline CoFe nanoparticles and BiVO4 has fewer surface trapped states compared with that of amorphous CoFe LDH layers. The CoFe/BiVO4 photoanodes showed a desirable photocurrent of 4.3 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, and the maximum applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE) for the crystalline CoFe/BiVO4 photoanode was calculated to be 1.2% at 1.01 V, consistent with 1.5 times enhancement over that of amorphous CoFe/BiVO4 and nearly 4 times enhancement over that of BiVO4.

Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting System—A Study of Interfacial Charge Transfer with Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy

Bingyan Zhang,Xiaofan Zhang,Xin Xiao,Yan Shen

Fast charge transfer kinetics at the photoelectrode/electrolyte interface is critical for efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting system. Thus, far, a measurement of kinetics constants for such processes is limited. In this study, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is employed to investigate the charge transfer kinetics at the photoelectrode/electrolyte interface in the feedback mode in order to simulate the oxygen evolution process in PEC system. The popular photocatalysts BiVO4 and Mo doped BiVO4 (labeled as Mo:BiVO4) are selected as photoanodes and the common redox couple [Fe(CN)6]3–/[Fe(CN)6]4– as molecular probe. SECM characterization can directly reveal the surface catalytic reaction kinetics constant of 9.30 × 107 mol–1 cm3 s–1 for the BiVO4. Furthermore, we find that after excitation, the ratio of rate constant for photogenerated hole to electron via Mo:BiVO4 reacting with mediator at the electrode/electrolyte interface is about 30 times larger than that of BiVO4. This suggests that introduction of Mo6+ ion into BiVO4 can possibly facilitate solar to oxygen evolution (hole involved process) and suppress the interfacial back reaction (electron involved process) at photoanode/electrolyte interface. Therefore, the SECM measurement allows us to make a comprehensive analysis of interfacial charge transfer kinetics in PEC system.

Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Performance of BiVO4 Photoanodes Co-Modified with Borate and NiFeOx

Siqiang Cheng,Yun Cheng,Taoyun Zhou,Shilin Li,Dong Xie,Xinyu Li

Despite significant progress in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, high fabrication costs and limited efficiency of photoanodes hinder practical applications. Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4), with its low cost, non-toxicity, and suitable band structure, is a promising photoanode material but suffers from poor charge transport, sluggish surface kinetics, and photocorrosion. In this study, porous monoclinic BiVO4films are fabricated via a simplified successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method, followed by borate treatment and PEC deposition of NiFeOx. The resulting B/BiVO4/NiFeOxphotoanode exhibits a significantly enhanced photocurrent density of 2.45 mA cm−2at 1.23 V vs. RHE—5.3 times higher than pristine BiVO4. It also achieves an ABPE of 0.77% and a charge transfer efficiency of 79.5%. These results demonstrate that dual surface modification via borate and NiFeOxis a cost-effective strategy to improve BiVO4-based PEC water splitting performance. This work provides a promising pathway for the scalable development of efficient and economically viable photoanodes for solar hydrogen production.

BiVO4 Photoanode Modification by In-Doping and Anoxic Annealing by Synergistic Regulation

Yaping Zhang,Xi Chen,Fengqiu Jiang,Yuyu Bu,Jin-Ping Ao

In this work, we fabricate a semitransparent BiVO4 photoanode via the synergistic effect of indium (In) doping and anoxic annealing. An optimized photocurrent density of 3.6 mA cm–2 at 2 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode is obtained in a sacrificial free electrolyte system (AM 1.5G 100 mW cm–2). In-doping increases the difficulty to form bonds between Bi atoms and O atoms in the crystal bulk. Thus, quasi-oxygen vacancies in the bulk of the BiVO4 crystal can be induced under anoxic annealing to increase the mobility, lifetime, and concentration of the photogenerated carriers. On the other hand, anoxic annealing can inhibit the conversion rate of the BiOI nanosheet arrays to BiVO4 to form a nanonet structure with a large surface reaction area. Therefore, through a simple In-doping and controlled anoxic annealing process, the photogenerated carriers and the nanomorphology of BiVO4 photoanode are synergistically optimized.
