Core-shell BN/SCF architectures with dual phonon-electronic conduction pathways for synergistically enhance thermal conductivity, EMI shielding and mechanical properties of CF/EP composites

Jiamei Luo,Yi Xue,Chenxi Yang,Yong Liu,Liying Zhang,Hui Zhang,Jianyong Yu

The urgent demand for reliable thermal management, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and mechanical properties in aerospace electronics operating under extreme conditions drives the development of advanced multifunctional composites. Herein, the core-shell boron nitride/short carbon fiber (BN/SCF), synthesized via diazonium coupling and electrostatic assembly, is strategically aligned onto CF felts using a high-voltage electric field. Subsequent lamination with CF cloth and vacuum-assisted resin infusion (VARI) molding to fabricate multifunctional carbon fiber/epoxy resin (CF/EP) composites. The three-dimensional CF felt establishes thermal conduction bridges within EP interlayers, effectively mitigating the intrinsic limitation of out-of-plane thermal conductive. Concurrently, the BN nanoplates coated onto SCF enhance EP phonon transport via architecturally ordered crystalline lattice alignment, while oriented SCFs extend phonon pathways, collectively establishing dual phonon-electron thermal channels. Consequently, the CF/EP composites achieved optimal out-of-plane and in-plane thermal conductivities of 1.20 and 14.08 W m -1 K -1 . The unique core-shell BN/SCF promotes multiple reflections of electromagnetic waves (EMWs) through an energy band structure mismatch between the wide bandgap BN and conductive SCF, and BN dielectric polarization, achieving exceptional shielding effectiveness (SE) of 50.06 dB, which was a 63.33 % improvement over the original CF/EP composites (30.65 dB). Moreover, the core-shell BN/SCF acts as rivet-like reinforcements, suppressing crack propagation through synergistic mechanical interlocking and chemical bonding, achieving 35.50 % and 97.35 % enhancement in ILSS and mode II toughness compared to original CF/EP. This multiscale structural engineering strategy demonstrates a material-level solution to fulfill the multifunctional requirements of next-generation aerospace systems operating under extreme environment conditions.

An efficient and low-cost liquid silicon infiltration method to prepare SiC-coated carbon short fiber for fiber protection of Cf/SiC ceramic matrix composites

Jie Tang,Meng Liu,Yuquan Wei,Yong Yang,Zhengren Huang

Liquid silicon infiltration (LSI) is a fast and low-cost method for the manufacturing of C f /SiC composites. However, due to the high reactivity of LSI process, the carbon fiber is easily to be eroded by liquid silicon. A recognized solution is to coat the fiber surface with a protective layer. Here, we report a preparation method of C f @SiC short fiber for carbon fiber protection in LSI process. First, C f @HTC short fiber with controllable thickness (1–10 μm) and uniform Hydrothermal carbon (HTC) coating was prepared by hydrothermal method . After the first LSI, silicon carbide layers which was derived from the reaction of HTC and liquid silicon had been successfully constructed on the carbon fibers with the thickness rang form 1–3 μm. This strategy demonstrates a tantalizing possibility and promising prospect to the preparation of light and high strength C f /SiC ceramic matrix composites with good fiber protection.

Formation and mechanism of carbon coating on carbon fibers through glucose-to-carbon conversion and its effect on the mechanical properties of Cf/ZrB2-SiC composites

Huiyi Fang,Zonghao Sheng,Wenxia Wang,Chuncheng Wei,Shuang Li,Xin Geng,Xiaowei Li,Nannan Zhu,Guangwu Wen,Shun Dong,Peng Wang

The protection for carbon fibers is crucial for carbon fiber-reinforced materials. Carbon coatings were prepared on carbon fibers through gelation, hydrothermal caramelization and pyrolysis, with glucose as precursor of carbon. The glucose-to-carbon conversion mechanism was explored, as well as the effect of high pressure in hydrothermal reactor and the catalytic role of KCl. The high pressure suppressed gas escape and was beneficial to the formation of dense carbon coating. The KCl promoted the generation of 5-HMF, thereby accelerated the glucose-to-caramel conversion. C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composites were prepared by introducing ZrB 2 -SiC slurry into the carbon fiber preform and hot press sintering. The carbon coating protected the carbon fibers from damage during sintering at high temperature. The carbon coating significantly improved the flexural strength, fracture toughness, and fracture work of C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composites from 122 MPa, 3.24 MPa‧m 1/2 , and 231.6 J/m 2 to 321 MPa, 5.87 MPa‧m 1/2 , and 567.1 J/m 2 , respectively.

External and internal dual-controls: Tunable cavity and Ru–O–Co bond bridge synergistically accelerate the RuCoCu-MOF/CF nanorods for urea-assisted energy-saving hydrogen production

Yilin Wang,Yunmei Du,Ziqi Fu,Mengmeng Wang,Yunlei Fu,Bin Li,Lei Wang

Currently, there are still many limitations in the research of conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in the field of electrocatalysis . On the one hand, most MOFs have a solid construction, seriously hindering their mass transfer process. On the other hand, innate bonding is not conducive to the optimization of electronic structures and the excitation of intrinsic active sites. Therefore, external/internal dual-control of MOFs is urgently needed to break the shackles of their activity. Herein, the hollow RuCoCu-MOF/CF nanorods with tunable cavities are directionally constructed by a self-sacrificial template method. Benefiting from the exact morphological control and the unique Ru–O–Co bond bridge, RuCoCu-MOF/CF exhibits superior performances for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR). Surprisingly, a record-breaking voltage of 1.402 V drives a current density of 10 mA cm −2 for urea-assisted overall water splitting under alkaline conditions, greatly promoting the development of energy-efficient hydrogen production technology. This work firstly constructed the MOF-based self-supporting electrode with ultra-high urea-assisted hydrogen production and urea degradation performances via the dual controls of the cavity size and chemical bond bridge. This points out the direction for the development of unique integrated electrodes for both hydrogen production and decontamination .

Fabrication of high-temperature thermoplastic and highly compatible poly(amide-amide acid) salt interface via water-soluble precursor in-situ construction strategy for aerospace-grade CF/PPS composites

Yu Zhang,Chengchang Ji,Song Yan,Sen Zhang,Mengtong Li,Xuran Ruan,Jianfeng Zhou,Shu Zhu

Interfacial failure in aerospace-grade polyphenylene sulfide/carbon fiber composites has long limited their critical applications, primarily stemming from the inherent inability of conventional thermosetting sizing agents to simultaneously achieve high thermal stability and interfacial compatibility. To address this challenge, we devised an environmentally friendly strategy involving molecularly designing water-soluble poly(amide-amide acid) (PAAAs) precursors synthesized via a one-pot aqueous polymerization. Through targeted temperature control, we achieved in-situ construction of a thermoplastic poly(amide-imide) (PAI) interface on fiber surfaces, characterized by excellent thermal resistance and compatibility. This designed interphase not only enhanced fiber–matrix integration through synergistic hydrogen bonding and π-π conjugation but also activated a unique cavitation toughening mechanism under stress. The strong interfacial interactions effectively induced cavitation within the PPS matrix, enabling substantial energy dissipation and cracked path deflection. This in-situ constructed interface significantly improved the composite’s interfacial shear strength, interlaminar shear strength, and flexural strength by 75.9%, 62.2%, and 41.4%, respectively, while transforming the failure mode from brittle interfacial debonding to ductile matrix fracture. Our molecular designed strategy for in-situ PAI interface construction successfully enabled low-viscosity sizing while resolving the long-standing compatibility and thermal resistance challenges in CF/PPS composites, establishing a new paradigm for interfacial design in thermoplastic composites.

Construction of an interphase with heat and solvent resistance by a waterborne self-crosslinking polyamide-imide sizing agent to enhance the interfacial and mechanical performance of CF/PEEK composites

Wentao Chen,Ke Zhang,Shuai Wang,Siyu Wang,Chunhai Chen,Xiaogang Zhao,Hongwei Zhou,Daming Wang

The inherent inertness of carbon fiber (CF) and poly ether ether ketone (PEEK), coupled with the insufficient thermal stability of conventional sizing agents, limits the full realization of the exceptional properties of CF/PEEK composites. In this study, self-crosslinked aqueous polyamide-imide (PAI) sizing agents with varying rigid-to-flexible ratios are synthesized for interfacial modification of CF/PEEK composites. The results indicate that, when the ratio of rigid to flexible monomers is 5:5, the mechanical properties and interfacial performance of the composite reach their optimal values, with tensile modulus and strength, flexural modulus and strength, and impact strength increased by 20.2 %, 39.1 %, 32.1 %, 30.4 %, and 60.4 %, respectively. Additionally, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of the composite increases by 86.0 %. The interface between CF and PEEK is analyzed using atomic force microscopy (AFM), the results reveal the successful formation of a modulus transition layer with a gradual modulus decrease between them. This special structure facilitates more uniform load transfer within the composite and achieves higher transfer efficiency. Beyond these improvements, tensile strength of the composite at 200 °C increases by 63.7 %, and the sized CF demonstrates an IFSS retention rate of up to 97 % after immersion in organic solvents. This study proposes a novel and viable approach for the optimization of the interface of CF/PEEK composites.

1O2-dominated coral-like ZnO nanospheres modified Cu(OH)2@CF composite electrode for electro-fenton-degradation of tigecycline: In situ activation of H2O2 and non-radical degradation mechanism

Ruoyi Li,Jian Zhang,Dong Liu,Haina Bai,Chuntao Zhu,Xinyan Wang,Jia Li

In conventional Electro-Fenton systems, the oxidation process dominated by the Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cycle and · OH radicals, although effective in degrading organic pollutants, is still limited by a narrow pH applicability range (2–4). To address this challenge, a coral-like ZnO nanospheres modified Cu(OH) 2 @CF composite electrode was synthesized in this study, which significantly broadened the applicable pH range (2–10). The ZnO/Cu(OH) 2 @CF composite electrode enhanced the selective generation of single-linear oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and overcame the inherent defects, such as the extremely short lifetime of · OH (<1 μs), while enabling the efficient in situ generation of H 2 O 2 (272.51 mg/L, 30 min). And the complete degradation of tigecycline (TGC) was realized within 30 min with an operating cost of only 0.044 ¥·m −3 (energy consumption 0.076 kWh·m −3 ). and a low Tafel slope of only 24.80 mV·dec -1 is required for an efficient Electro-Fenton reaction. Notably, the ZnO/Cu(OH) 2 @CF composite electrode exhibited high degradation rates for a variety of typical antibiotics and could be adapted to different water quality conditions. After 10 cycles of use, its degradation rate of TGC was still as high as 92.67 %. The continuous flow reactor not only maintained more than 90 % degradation efficiency for TGC after 300 min of operation, but also maintained a high degradation rate of 80 % for mixed antibiotic wastewater. The dominant mechanism of action of 1 O 2 was deeply analyzed by bursting experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS), three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy (3DEEMs) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) techniques were used to reveal the degradation pathways of the pollutants and the toxicity evolution of the intermediates.

Preparation of CF-GO-SiO2 multi-scale reinforcements based on electrostatic interaction: A non-destructive and simple method to construct hybrid interface layers of carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic resin composites

Shan Cheng,Nan Li,Bing Wang,Fangyuan Hu,Lishuai Zong,Haoyue Hao,Qingguang Bao,Cheng Liu,Yousi Chen,Xigao Jian

A GO-SiO 2 hybrid interface layer was prepared by electrostatic adsorption to synergistically improve the weak interface bonding between carbon fiber (CF) and poly(phthalazinone ether ketone) (PPEK). FTIR, Raman and XPS confirmed that GO-SiO 2 interface layer is constructed on CF surface. SEM and AFM indicated that the synergistic effect of GO-SiO 2 could obviously improve the CF surface roughness. CF-GO-SiO 2 /PPEK composite exhibits excellent interlaminar shear strength (84.2 MPa), flexural strength (1620 MPa), storage modulus (132.9 GPa) and T g (285 °C). The GO-SiO 2 interface layer improves the mechanical interlocking and wettability between CF and PPEK, and the failure mechanism of the composite changes from interfacial debonding for Untreated CF/PPEK composite to matrix cohesive destruction and fiber breakage for CF-GO-SiO 2 /PPEK composite. Moreover, the layer is beneficial to the hydrothermal ageing resistance of the composite. This study provides a promising strategy for improving the interfacial properties of advanced thermoplastic composites.

Lipid core-shell nanoparticles co-deliver FOLFOX regimen and siPD-L1 for synergistic targeted cancer treatment

Weiran Cao,Xue Zhang,Rui Li,Zijie Li,An Lu,Fei Yu,Lu Sun,Jiancheng Wang,Zhiyu Wang,Huining He

FOLFOX regimen, composed of folinic acid, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and oxaliplatin (OXP), has been used as clinical standard therapeutic regimen in treatments of colorectal cancer (CRC) and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). To further improve its therapeutic outcomes, FOLFOX was combined with anti-PD-1 antibody to form an advanced chemo-immune combination strategy, which has been proven more efficient in controlling cancer progression and prolonging patients' survival in various clinical trials. However, bad tumor accumulation, relative high toxicity, numerous treatment cycles with high fees and low compliance as well as drug resistance seriously limit the prognosis of FOLFOX regimen. The “all-in-one” formulations, which could precisely delivery multidrug regimen into tumor sites and cells, showed a promising application prospect for targeted drug delivery as well as reducing side effects. However, the design and preparation of the “all-in-one” formulation with high drug encapsulation efficiencies for all drugs was still challenging. Herein, a lipid core-shell nanoparticle codelivery platform was designed for simultaneous encapsulation of variant FOLFOX composed of miriplatin (MiPt), 5-Fluoro-2′-deoxyuridine 5′-monophosphate (FdUMP), calcium folinate ( CF ) and PD-L1 siRNA (siPD-L1) with high efficiencies, and their synergistic anti-tumor mechanisms were studied, respectively. MiPt, a precursor of OXP, was validated capable of inducing efficient immunogenic cell death (ICD) in this work. Additionally, ICD-mediated release of damage associated molecular patterns functionalized synergistically with PD-L1 silence by siPD-L1 to overcome chemoresistance, reverse suppressive tumor microenvironment and recruit more CD8 + T cells. FdUMP, as the intracellular active form of 5-FU, could induce large amounts of reactive oxygen species to enhance the ICD. CF worked as the sensitizer of FdUMP. The enhanced long-term anti-tumor effect of the prepared “all-in-one” formulation compared to free drug regimen and other controls, was verified in heterotopic CRC mice models and ESCC mice models, providing new thoughts for researchers and showing a promising prospect of translation into clinical applications.
