Synthetic Ni–CaO–CeO2 dual function materials for integrated CO2 capture and conversion via reverse water–gas shift reaction

Jiayi Wu,Yuhang Zheng,Jiali Fu,Yafei Guo,Jun Yu,Jie Chu,Pu Huang,Chuanwen Zhao

Integrated CO 2 capture with reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction to produce syngas represents a promising technology to realize C1 recycling and utilization. Designing highly efficient Ni–CaO dual function materials (DFMs) is the key to achieve integrated CO 2 capture and utilization (ICCU). In this work, Ni–CaO–CeO 2 DFMs powders and pellets are prepared by the wet mixing, coprecipitation and sol–gel methods using acetate and nitrate precursors. Physicochemical properties and ICCU performance of the Ni–CaO–CeO 2 DFMs depend on synthetic mode, precursor, and granulation process. NiCaCe-SG (A) and NiCaCe-SG (N) prepared by sol–gel method show excellent ICCU-RWGS performance due to the developed pore structures, enhanced surface basicity, uniform Ni dispersion, minimized Ni grain size, abundant oxygen vacancies and reinforced reducibility. The NiCaCe-SG (A) sample prepared using acetate salts as precursors exhibits better ICCU-RWGS performance than the nitrate precursors-derived NiCaCe–SG (N) DFMs. Granulation adversely affects the CO 2 capture capacity, CO yield and working stability of the NiCaCe–SG (N) sample due to declined textural properties, weakened surface basicity and reducibility. NiCaCe–SG (A) represents an excellent DFMs candidate for ICCU-RWGS with high CO 2 uptake and conversion rate of 15.34 mmol CO 2 /g and 92.4 %, great CO yield and CO selectivity of 5.97 mmol CO/g and 89.1 %, and good working stability (a low decay rate of 11.6 % in 10 cycles). These results have provided new insights into the rational design of high-performance DFMs for ICCU applications.

Effects of LiF on sintering behavior and properties of CaO-B2O3-SiO2 dielectric ceramics obtained by solid-state reaction

Xiaodong Zhu,Fantao Kong,Xinsheng Ma

Li-added CaO-B 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (CBS) dielectric microwave substrates for low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) applications were prepared using a solid-state reaction, and the effect of the LiF additive on the sintering behavior, dielectric performance and mechanical properties of the product was investigated. In this presently reported work, we found that the LiF additive could effectually reduce the sintering temperature of the CBS ceramics and also substantially improved the densification, dielectric and mechanical properties of it. The experimental results showed that an addition of 3 wt% LiF to the sample sintered at 790 °C resulted in a main crystalline phase of β-CaSiO3 which had excellent proprieties. These included an excellent degree of densification, ε r of 6.43, tan δ of 5.9 × 10 −4 and a volume resistivity of 8.20 × 10 11 Ω cm at 1 MHz, and flexural strength of 241 MPa.

Combined effect of La2O3 and Fe2O3 on the crystallization behavior and microstructure of CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 glass-ceramics

Zhuoqing An,Yuan Gao,Jiajing Chen

The CaO-MgO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (CMAS) glass-ceramics containing complex nucleation agents including La 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3 were prepared by melt process. The effects of these complex nucleation agents on the crystallization and microstructure of CMAS glass-ceramics were investigated through the thermal analysis (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The results indicated that the addition of La 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3 decreases viscosity and ion movement resistance. Furthermore, the La 2 O 3 can increase the crystallization peak temperature, while the Fe 2 O 3 has an inverse effect. The crystallization activation energy decreased from 298.87 to 264.26 kJ/mol as the mole ratio of La 2 O 3 increased to 2%. Conversely, when the mole ratio of Fe 2 O 3 increased to 2%, the crystallization activation energy increased from 298.87 to 347.21 kJ/mol. However, the addition of La 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3 decreased the Avrami parameter and promoted the surface crystallization within the CMAS glass system, as confirmed by the microstructure analysis. The crystal show branch-like crystal morphology when La 2 O 3 adding, whereas Fe 2 O 3 addition led to a compact, seaweed-like morphology with a fractal structure. With decreasing La 2 O 3 and increasing Fe 2 O 3 , the width of the dendritic branches increased. The major crystal phases detected on the surface were augite and diopside phase. Fe is predominantly present in the augite phase and La is primarily incorporated as a solid solution within the crystal phase.

Biodiesel production from sheep fat catalyzed by CaO-SrO(x)/BCs(y) acid-base bifunctional catalyst and process optimization

Shengyan Wang,Hongyu Fu,Abulikemu Abulizi,Kenji Okitsu,Yasuaki Maeda,Aisha Nulahong,Tiezhen Ren,Shengli Niu

In this study, an environmentally friendly and recyclable acid-base bifunctional CaO-SrO/biomass chars (BCs) catalyst was prepared using egg shells and poplar leaves as the base materials, and it was used to transesterify waste sheep fat into biodiesel. The structure and properties of the catalysts were investigated by EDX/SEM, BET, NH 3 TPD, and XRD analyses. Biodiesel yield was optimized for maximum values using RSM and ANN. The highest biodiesel yield of 98.83 % was achieved at a catalyst amount of 6 wt%, an alcohol-oil ratio of 8:1, a reaction time of 1.5 h, and a reaction temperature of 65 °C. The catalyst maintained 80.3 % yield after five cycles and showed good acid resistance. By studying the thermodynamics and kinetics behavior of transesterification, the results showed that the doping of SrO reduced the activation energy of the reaction, the activation energy of the reaction is 45.38 kJ/mol. These results show the great potential of our catalyst in transesterification reactions. In addition, the quality of sheep fat biodiesel meets the ASTM D6751 standard. In a life cycle cost analysis, it is shown that our process is relevant for the scale-up and to industrialize of biodiesel production.

Influence of FeSiAl content on the morphological evolution and electromagnetic properties of FeSiAl/CaO–B2O3–SiO2 microwave-absorbing coatings

Chen Zhang,Benzheng Gao,Houyang Yu,Xin Wang,Jianliang Xie

CaO–B 2 O 3 –SiO 2 (CBS) is a promising lightweight, low-dielectric matrix material for high-temperature microwave-absorbing coatings. However, the comprehensive study of absorbent morphology evolution within such coatings and its influence on electromagnetic (EM) performance has not been conducted. In this work, a series of FeSiAl (FSA)/CBS composite coatings with various FSA contents were fabricated using atmospheric plasma spraying. The morphological evolution of the FSA phase and the resulting EM properties of the coatings were systematically analyzed. Experimental findings show that during the spraying process, when the size of FSA clusters in the composite powder exceeds the thickness of CBS splats, FSA clusters form a rigid contact with the underlying solidified coating, leading to the development of a lamellar structure. This lamellar FSA phase creates local conductive networks, which significantly increase the complex permittivity of the coating. These results provide valuable guidance for controlling absorbent morphology and optimizing the EM properties of CBS-based coatings.

Blue light irradiation-stirred washing high luminescence and highly stable CsPbBrI2 quantum dots modified with CaO for backlight display

Yanling Lin,Zhennan Wu,Enrou Mei,Jiapeng Yang,Ye He,Zhenbo Xu,Xiaojuan Liang,Xingen Hu,Ruowang Liu,Weidong Xiang

Perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have become the star material for liquid crystal display (LCD). However, instability affects its practical application. Herein, CsPbBrI 2 quantum dots (CsPbBrI 2 QDs) with high quantum efficiency have been successfully precipitated in situ by adding CaO to the Li-Al-Si glass substrate. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) was adjusted from 64.5 % to 87.5 %. At the same time, we adopted a new strategy of blue light irradiation-stirred water washing. When blue light irradiation and stirred water washing interact synergistically, the naked CsPbBrI 2 QDs detached from the glass surface, while smaller CsPbBrI 2 QDs continued to grow. This process successfully resulted in CsPbBrI 2 QDs with high luminescence intensity and high stability. Moreover, when exposed to 60 °C, 90 % relative humidity (RH), and 2000 nit blue light for 240 hours (h), the treated sample could retain 91.1 % of the original emission intensity. The color gamut of the prepared CsPbBrI 2 @CsPbBr 3 @glass@polystyrene (PS) light conversion film covered 122 % of the NTSC 1953 standard and 90 % of the Rec. 2020 standard. It provided great value for the commercialization of QDs in backlight display applications.

Mn-enhanced performance of the Ni-CaO/γ-Al2O3 dual function material for CO2 capture and in situ methanation

Shu-Xiang Xiang,Jin-Peng Wang,Su Gao,Zhan-Kuo Guo,Hui-Lin Jiang,Bao-Xia Dong,Yun-Lei Teng

The CH 4 yield over dual functional materials (DFMs) remains low and requires further improvement. In this work, we first examined the influence of Mn on the performance of the Ni-CaO/γ-Al 2 O 3 DFM for CO 2 capture and in situ methanation. Our results showed that the MnNi-DFM-3 (MnNi-CaO/γ-Al 2 O 3 DFM) exhibited the best performance at 350 °C, with a CH 4 yield of 0.56 mmol/g which is 4 times higher than that of the Ni-DFM-1 (Ni-CaO/γ-Al 2 O 3 DFM) (0.14 mmol/g). Nanoscale characterization revealed that highly scattered Mn 3 O 4 acted as a barrier preventing the agglomeration of Ni-based catalysts. Furthermore, our density functional theory (DFT) analysis demonstrated that the introduction of Mn enhanced the activation of CO 2 , promoted the dissociation of H 2 and intermediates, and reduced the activation energy needed to produce carboxylic acid intermediates on the Ni catalyst. The prepared MnNi-DFM is promising to be a cheap efficient material for CO 2 capture and in situ methanation. This work opens up a new pathway for enhancing the performance of DFMs using inexpensive transition metals.

Morphology effects of CeO2 on the performance of CaO-Cu/ CeO2 for integrated CO2 capture and conversion to CO

Yu Fan,Bowen Lu,Ziqiang Han,Cong Luo,Liqi Zhang

CeO 2 support inhibits CaO sintering, and oxygen vacancy influences CO 2 hydrogenation performance, making CeO 2 widely applied in Integrated CO 2 capture and in-situ conversion technology for reverse water–gas shift (ICCC-RWGS). Oxygen vacancy concentration was dependent on the morphology of CeO 2 , which would affect metal dispersion and CO 2 hydrogenation conversion. However, Very little is known about the morphology effect of CeO 2 on the carbon capture and in-situ hydrogenation performance of DFMs. Here, Cu/CeO 2 with different CeO 2 morphologies was synthesized, and high Cu dispersion was achieved on Cu/CeO 2 -R, exhibiting the best CO 2 hydrogenation performance. Integrated Cu/CeO 2 with CaO by physical mixing method, CaO-Cu/CeO 2 was used to investigate the morphology effects of CeO 2 on the performance of CaO-Cu/CeO 2 for integrated CO 2 capture and conversion to CO. CaO-Cu/CeO 2 -R exhibited the best capture-hydrogenation performance (CO 2 conversion rate of 75 %, CO production rate of 9.72 mmol/g). The CeO 2 -R provided more surface oxygen vacancies, enhancing carbonate hydrogenation. The larger specific surface area and {1   1   0} crystal plane of CeO 2 -rod enhanced Cu dispersion, and the smaller particle size of CeO 2 -R enhanced its interaction with CaO, improving the cyclic stability of CaO-Cu/CeO 2 -R. The hydrogenation performance of CaO-Cu/CeO 2 was dependent on the morphology of CeO 2 , providing insights into the design of high-activity metal catalytic components in ICCC-RWGS.

Understanding the Competition Mechanism between Na2O and CaO for the Formation of the Initial Layer of Zhundong Coal Ash

Maierhaba Abudoureheman,Lanzhen He,Kunpeng Liu,Bo Wei,Jia Lv,Jianjiang Wang,Quan Zhu

The contents of alkali and alkaline earth metals are higher in Zhundong coal, and there are serious problems of slagging and fouling during the combustion process. Therefore, it is of great significance to reveal the mechanism of slagging and fouling in the boiler of Zhundong coal. In this paper, first-principle calculations based on density functional theory are used to study the competition mechanism of alkaline metal oxides during the combustion process in Zhundong coal by establishing the Na2O(110)/CaO(100)-SiO2(100) double-layer interface model. The results show that the bond lengths of the surface of Na2O(110) and CaO(100) with SiO2(100) after adsorption were generally lengthened and the value of bond population became smaller, which formed a stable binding energy during the reaction. The electron loss of Na is 0.05 e, the electron loss of Ca is 0.03 e, and the electron loss of Na2O is greater than that of CaO. The charge transfer on the surface of Na2O with SiO2is obviously higher than that of CaO and the orbital hybridization on the surface of CaO with SiO2is weaker than that on the surfaces of Na2O with SiO2. Na2O is easier to react with SiO2than CaO. The adsorption energies on the surface of Na2O and CaO with SiO2are −5.56 eV and −0.72 eV, respectively. The adsorption energy of Na2O is higher than that of CaO, indicating that Na2O is more prone to adsorption reactions and formation of Na-containing minerals and other minerals, resulting in more serious slagging. In addition, the XRD analyses at different temperatures showed that Na-containing compounds appeared before Ca-containing ones, and the reaction activity of Na2O is stronger than that of CaO in the reaction process. The experimental results have good agreement with the calculation results. This provides strong evidence to reveal the slagging and fouling of Zhundong coal.

Synergistic catalytic effect of activated carbon nanomaterial and CaO for highly selective oxidation of levulinic acid to citramalic acid

Yaqi Duan,Conghao Ku,Yuping Lv,Yantao Wang,Weiran Yang

Due to its unique physical and chemical properties, applying activated carbon nanomaterials as catalysts gradually become a hot research topic. Herein, the synergistic catalytic effect of activated carbon nanoparticles and CaO for highly selective oxidation of levulinic acid to citramalic acid was first reported. Among various activated carbons tested (commercially available and biomass-derived), the one obtained from Nanjing Chemical Reagent Co., Ltd. exhibits the best catalytic activity due to its large surface area, suitable pore structure, abundant active sites, and excellent O 2 activation ability. The levulinic acid conversion and citramalic acid selectivity respectively reached 100 % and 82.8 % at 90 °C for 0.5 h under 0.5 Mpa O 2 . Further, the 3D flower-like CaO/carbon composite (CaO/CF) was developed, which also showed excellent catalytic activity for the selective oxidation of levulinic acid to citramalic acid, with 91 % levulinic acid conversion and 81.8 % citramalic acid selectivity under otherwise the same reaction condition. The mechanistic study indicated that superoxide anion radical ( O 2 – ), Ca 2+ and OH – all play a crucial role in levulinic acid oxidation. This work may promote the application of activated carbon nanomaterial as an effective catalyst for selective oxidation reactions.

The dual role of MgO in phase transformation and dissolution within the FeV2O4-CaO-MgO system: Toward efficient vanadium extraction

Hongru Rao,Junyi Xiang,Lu Qiao,Xu Zhang,Wei Lv,Qingyun Huang,Xuewei Lv

The calcium‑magnesium composite roasting – acid leaching process represents a sustainable alternative for vanadium extraction from vanadium slag, yet its underlying mechanism remains insufficiently understood. This study systematically investigates the phase transformation and dissolution behavior within the FeV 2 O 4 –CaO–MgO system to clarify the role of MgO. Results reveal its critical dual role: it promotes the formation of acid-soluble calcium‑magnesium vanadate (Ca 5 Mg 4 V 6 O 24 ), yet concurrently facilitates the formation of insoluble magnesium‑iron vanadates (e.g., Mg 2 FeV 3 O 11 ), thereby severely compromising leaching efficiency. The formation of the low-melting-point compound CaMgV 2 O 7 can also inhibit extraction via phase encapsulation. As a result, vanadium recovery demonstrates a pronounced non-monotonic dependence on MgO content, with a well-defined efficiency maximum under optimal conditions. These findings elucidate the phase-transformation mechanism governing leaching performance and establish a fundamental basis for the rational design of efficient vanadium recovery processes.

Unraveling the role of CaO and MgO as supports in the vanadium-based nitrogen carrier for chemical looping ammonia production

Ziheng Han,Tuo Guo,Yuhai Liu,Yuzhe Lu,Jingjing Ma,Xiude Hu,Qingjie Guo

The limited reactivity of single transition metal nitrogen carrier (NC) is a significant factor contributing to the suboptimal performance of chemical looping ammonia production (CLAP). This research proposes a strategy of loading alkaline earth metal oxides to construct a vanadium-based NC loading CaO (VN/CaO composite NC) with enhanced reactivity. The results demonstrate that the incorporation of CaO increases the lattice nitrogen conversion rate of VN from 4 % to 21 % and reduces the ammonia production temperature. The ammonia production rate of VN/CaO composite NC reaches 481.25 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 at 800 °C. In contrast, the electron-donating ability of MgO is weaker than that of CaO, and the ammonia production rate of the VN/MgO is 350 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 . Theoretical calculations and experimental characterizations reveal that CaO maintains the surface basicity of the NC, creating an electron-rich surface that weakens the V N bond strength, promotes H 2 adsorption and dissociation, and enhances the reactivity of vanadium-based NC. The reaction mechanism of VN/CaO composite NC follows the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism, with the hydrogenation of NH 3 intermediates identified as the rate-determining step. This study provides theoretical support for the development of multi-component composite NC.
