ZIF-8, a metal-organic framework, has large sorption capacities for a series of heavy metals. However, it is difficult to be separated from aqueous solution, limiting its practical application in wastewater treatment . Herein, ZIF-8 was in-situ grown on the polyethyleneimine-functionalized alginate to construct the ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI aerogels with a three-dimensional network structure. This synthesis strategy not only overcomes the above-mentioned defects of ZIF-8, but also provides more functional groups, pores, and channels. The synthesized ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI aerogels exhibit outstanding removal performance towards Pb(II) and Cd(II) with maximum sorption capacity values of 295.986 and 249.838 mg·g −1 , respectively. The sorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) on ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI is strongly affected by pH, but little influenced by ionic strength. In the multi-component sorption systems, ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI shows better sorption affinity and selectivity for Pb(II) than for Cd(II). The three-dimensional network structure constructed by alginate makes Pb(II) and Cd(II) easier to contact with the surfaces of ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI. The strong surface complexation of the O- and N-containing functional groups provided by ZIF-8 and PEI with Pb(II) and Cd(II) makes the largest contribution to the removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI. In summary, the experimental findings of this work prove that the synthesized ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI aerogels have promising applications in practical wastewater treatment .

In this study, lignin extracted from rice husk was used to synthesis double network hydrogel adsorbent, named RH-CTS/PAM gel. RH-CTS/PAM gel exhibited macroporous structure and high buried water content, which gave rise to the exceptional adsorption performance. As results, in individual systems, the equilibrium time of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) with initial concentration of 200 mg/L could be reached within 10 min, with the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 374.32, 196.68 and 268.98 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption rate and capacity of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) in multicomponent systems were lower than that of individual systems. However, in a few cases of ternary system, higher adsorption rate and capacity was observed compare to binary systems. Adsorption mechanism indicated that both oxygen-containing and nitrogen-containing functional groups played a dominant role during the adsorption process, and mainly through chemical interaction along with a small amount of physical interaction.

The continuous expansion of the market demand and scale of commercial amidoxime chelating resins has caused large amounts of resin to be discarded around the world. In this study, the waste amidoxime chelating resin was reutilized as an adsorbent for the removal and recovery of Pb(II), Cu(II), Cd(II) and Zn(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The physical morphology and chemical composition of the waste amidoxime chelating resin (WAC-resin) from the factory was characterized by the elemental analyzer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The influence of the initial metal ions concentration, contact time, temperature and the solution pH on the adsorption performance of the metal ions was explored by batch experiments. It was shown that the optimal pH was 4. Kinetic studies revealed that adsorption process corresponded with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the adsorption isotherm was consistent with the Langmuir model. At room temperature, the adsorption capacities of WAC-resin for Pb2+, Cu2+, Zn2+and Cd2+reached 114.6, 93.4, 24.4 and 20.7 mg/g, respectively. Keywords:waste amidoxime chelating resin;characterization;reutilization;heavy metals

Novel porous cellulose/chitosan composite spheres loaded with nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI/PCSs) were fabricated for the removal of Cd (II) from aqueous solution and the remediation of Cd species in contaminated soil. The green-based nZVI/PCSs exhibited the improved dispersion and antioxidability of nZVI compared to the pristine one. The results from SEM/EDS suggested that the Fe (0) took part in the adsorption of the Cd (II) ions; whereas XPS analysis revealed that Fe (0) and amino groups in nZVI/PCSs played crucial roles in Cd (II) removal via the effects of precipitation or chelation. The results of the experiments in aqueous solution and model fitting showed that the adsorption of Cd (II) induced by nZVI/PCSs was better described by Langmuir isotherm and the maximum adsorption capacity reached up to 110.3 mg/g. The soil remediation tests demonstrated that nZVI/PCSs could significantly enhance cadmium immobilization, enabling the conversion of most exchangeable Cd species to Fe Mn oxides and organic matters in contaminated soil after the remediation. Overall, nZVI/PCSs have great potential as an excellent adsorbent with cost-effectiveness in Cd (II) removal from the aqueous solution and the remediation of Cd species in contaminated soil phases.

This study introduces the development of a portable electrochemical sensor for the detection of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions based on a screen-printed graphene electrode (SPGE) enhanced with alkalized MXene and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Experimental results reveal that the Au@Alk-MXene/SPGE electrode exhibits excellent electrical conductivity, enlarged active surface area, and efficient electron transfer capability, which enhances the electrochemical detection of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions. Under optimal experimental conditions, the sensor demonstrates good electrochemical response and distinct stripping peaks for both ions. The linear detection range of the sensor is 5-130 μg L⁻¹ for both Pb(II) and Cd(II), with detection limits of 0.198 μg L⁻¹ for Pb(II) and 0.106 μg L⁻¹ for Cd(II). Furthermore, the sensor shows excellent repeatability with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 1.16% (n = 10) for Pb(II) and 1.25% (n = 10) for Cd(II), as well as remarkable reproducibility with RSD values of 1.56% for Pb(II) and 1.57% for Cd(II). The sensor was successfully applied to analyze tap water and lake water samples, demonstrating satisfactory recovery rates. This research shows the use of MXenes and AuNPs to modify SPGE electrodes, offering a rapid and portable electrochemical sensor for detecting Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions in water.

Heavy metals (HMs) in wastewater, including Cd, Pb and Ni, were toxic and needed urgent treatment. Using biochar as an adsorbent to purify HM-containing wastewater is effective. However, there are few studies on screening of high-efficiency modifier and comparing their adsorption capacity. Herein, three different modification methods, including heteroatomic doping (urea), alkali hydroxide (NaOH) and chemical oxidation (KMnO 4 ), were used to improve removal ability of HMs by biochar. The difference in impregnation solution resulted in completely differences in microscopic morphology, physicochemical properties and adsorption efficiency of modified biochar. Biochar modified by KMnO 4 (Mn-BC) had significantly better adsorption capacity for Cd, Pb and Ni, reaching 46.40 mg/g, 80.20 mg/g and 18.65 mg/g, respectively, compared with raw biochar and other modification biochar, which might be due to the highest surface area and pore volume, lower zeta potential and loaded MnO x onto Mn-BC surface. Chemical and monolayer adsorption was dominant during adsorption of HMs. After adsorption, HMs were detected on the Mn-BC surface in the form of carbonate, hydroxide or oxide. Mineral precipitation and cation exchange were the dominant mechanisms during adsorption, accounting for 17.4%-41.8% and 43.0%-77.2%, respectively. Moreover, according to the correlation analysis, the increase in biochar pH, pore volume and degrees of carbonization were beneficial for HM adsorption. Mn-BC could adapt to a wider pH range (pH=4–6), and its adsorption capacity would not be interfered by coexisting ions (50 mg/L). This research proved advantages of biochar with KMnO 4 modification and highlighted its application in treatment of wastewater contaminated with multiple HMs.

A reduced graphene oxide supported Au-Bi bimetallic nanoparticles (rGO/Au-Bi) have been synthesized and employed as a novel sensing platform for electrochemical determination of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ simultaneously. The successful formation of rGO/Au-Bi nanocomposites was investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. At the rGO/Au-Bi nanocomposites modified electrode, two well-resolved voltammetric peaks for Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ were observed in differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) measurements. Under the optimized conditions (pH 4.5, deposition potential −1.0 V, deposition time 200 s), the DPASV response currents demonstrated good linearity with the concentration of Pb 2+ (0.1–500 μg L −1 ) and Cd 2+ (0.1–300 μg L −1 ). The detection limits was 0.05 μM for Pb 2+ and 0.02 μM for Cd 2+ , respectively. In addition, the proposed electrode exhibited outstanding resistance to potentially interferents, high stability and excellent repeatability. Satisfactory application of proposed electrode was also demonstrated by the determination of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ in real river water samples.

Development of carbonaceous materials from biomass have attracted tremendous research interest because of their intriguing physicochemical properties and promising applications. However, endowing them with precisely controlled morphologies remains a formidable challenge. Herein, oxygen-functionalized biomass-derived carbon-nanosheets (CNSs) framework was synthesized using ball-milling ultrasonic exfoliation for their application to remove cadmium Cd(II) from water matrices. The obtained CNSs showed remarkably higher surface area (368.9 m 2 /g), thickness-range (∼6–8 nm) and pore size (10.58 nm) than pristine carbon (PC) (10.126 m 2 /g, 1–2 µm and 2.13 nm, respectively). CNSs demonstrated higher adsorption capacity (545.76 mg g −1 ), superior reusability (removal efficiency maintained >91 % after 10 cycles) and excellent selectivity (K d = 4.7 × 10 6 mL g −1 ). The adsorption isotherm and kinetics data were better fitted by Langmuir and pseudo-second order models. High adsorption selectivity of CNSs led to 97.7 % Cd(II) adsorption in presence of Cu(II), Zn(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II) ions. The strong efficiency of CNSs was also evident in complex water matrices including tap water, groundwater (Cd(II) removal of >99 %) and river water (98.97 %). The experimental analyses indicate that electrostatic attraction and surface complexation as the prominent adsorption mechanisms. Overall, this work illustrates an applicable strategy to develop carbon-nanosheets and their successful application to remove toxic metals from water matrices.

Abstract In this study, a new-style “ex-situ charge interaction” strategy has been developed to prepare graphene oxide/organic functionalized silica nanoparticles (GO/OSNs) composites. The crucial point of the strategy is that the OSNs have positive charge by adding Hydrochloric acid (HCl). Four types of OSNs were prepared via one-pot sol–gel reaction of four different kinds of organosilane. Then the positively charge OSNs and negatively charge GO could effectively composite via charge interaction. The GO/OSNs were characterized by Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission electronic microscope (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that “ex-situ charge interaction” strategy might be a general method for the fabrication of GO/OSNs. This research provides a new approach for the fabrication of GO/OSNs composites with other OSNs structures. In addition, the application of GO/OSNs in the adsorption of Cd(II) has also been investigated, which included adsorption properties of four GO/OSNs, parameters of adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics.
GO/OSNs composites were fabricated based on a new-style “ex-situ charge interaction” strategy. OSNs were first prepared via one-pot sol–gel reaction. Furthermore, they were given positive charge by adding HCl. Finally, GO/OSNs were fabricated by charge interaction of between GO and OSNs.

A novel polyamine-type starch/glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) copolymer with a high capacity for the adsorption of heavy metal ions was prepared via graft copolymerization of GMA and corn starch and a subsequent amination reaction between amino group of diethylenetriamine and epoxy group in GMA. The copolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, and adsorption properties on modified starch of Cu(II), Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cr(III) were studied. By analysing the relationship between adsorption capacity and pH, adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics, it is proved that the adsorption of the four metal ions is mainly based on the chemical adsorption of coordination. The maximum adsorption capacities of the copolymer were up to 2.33, 1.25, 0.83 and 0.56 mmol g−1 for Cu(II), Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cr(III), respectively. The adsorption of the four concerned metal ions was hardly affected by common coexisting ions such as Na(I), K(I), Ca(II) and Mg(II), whereas it was slightly decreased when Fe(II) and Zn(II) coexisted in the solution, which illustrates the selective adsorption of Cu(II), Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cr(III) from wastewater. After 10 cycles of adsorption–desorption experiments, there was no significant change in the adsorption capacity, indicating that the polyamine-type starch/GMA copolymer has high adsorption capacity and good reusability.

In this study, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) were first assembled via the chemical co-precipitation, and high-quality carbon-based metal-free nanomaterials were synthesized using a heat-treatment process. The internal and morphological characteristics of hexagonal Star ZIF-8 were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrochemical sensor with a good response to Cd(II) was prepared via square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) with Star ZIF-8 nanomaterial-modified glassy carbon electrodes. The main parameters were adjusted to obtain the optimal stripping response and a wide linear range. Concurrently, under the calculation of SWASV, the sensitivity of Star ZIF-8-Nafion/GCE to Cd(II) was increased by five orders of magnitude (0.5–230 μg/L), and the determination level was even low to 0.48 μg/L. Based on the high anti-interference ability and stability of the sensor, the application potential of Star ZIF-8 carbon-based metal-free nanomaterials for the detection of trace Cd(II) in was confirmed.

Adsorption has been deemed as one of the most efficient technologies for the removal of heavy metals from water because of its diversity of adsorbents, low cost, and simple operation. In this study, acrylic acid underwent free radical polymerization in an aqueous solution of lignocellulose extracted from peanut shells (PS) to form a porous double network hydrogel adsorbent, PS(H)-PAA. The PS(H)-PAA hydrogel had high water permeability and a porous network structure, which could provide a fast channel for metal ions diffusion from solution into hydrogel and gave rise to good adsorption performance. The adsorption process of heavy metal ions on the PS(H)-PAA hydrogel was identified to be a spontaneous endothermic adsorption and reached kinetic equilibrium within only 10 min for Pb(II) and 60 min for Cd(II) at an initial concentration of 100 mg/L using 0.5 g/L of adsorbent. According to a Langmuir model, at T =313 K the maximum theoretical adsorption capacities were as high as 250.42 and 109.89 mg/g for Pb(II) (pH 5) and Cd(II) (pH 6), respectively. Moreover, a PS(H)-PAA hydrogel showed good adsorption performance over a pH range of 4–9. The surface properties, dimensional morphology, and thermal stability of the adsorbents were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and derivative thermogravimetry. The adsorption behavior under different conditions (such as pH, contact time, ion strength, and interfering ions) and the adsorption mechanism were studied. The adsorption mechanism indicated that oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups play a major role in the adsorption process, primarily through chemical interactions, and secondarily through physical interactions. In addition, these adsorbents exhibited strong chemical stability, had very high swelling ratios in water, and could be recycled easily. These results indicate the developed PS(H)-PAA hydrogel is an environmentally friendly and potentially effective adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals.
