The generation of humins by-products in biorefinery is often unavoidable. We here report the valorization of chitosan-derived humins for removal of heavy metal ions to enhance the atomic economy of the biomass conversion. Chitosan-derived humins were synthesized by catalysis of oxalic acid (OA), whereby the adsorption performance for Cd(II), Cr(III) and Cr(VI) was explored. The adsorption data were well fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, complemented by the Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models, revealing maximum adsorption capacities of humins for heavy metal ions as follows: 358.7 mg/g for Cr(VI), 152.6 mg/g for Cd(II), and 40.2 mg/g for Cr(III). The mechanistic studies revealed that the adsorption of Cd(II) and Cr(III) by humins mainly occurs through ion exchange (carboxyl groups) and surface complexation (hydroxyl, carbonyl, and amino groups). In comparison, the adsorption of Cr(VI) by humins involves electrostatic attraction, alongside ion exchange and surface complexation. After carbonization and activation, the specific surface area increased markedly, however the adsorption capacity decreased owing to reduced oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups. Competitive adsorption studies, industrial wastewater experiments, and cyclic adsorption tests demonstrate that humins exhibit remarkable adsorption performance even in complex environments. This work highlights that chitosan-derived humins are promising adsorbents for the remediation of heavy metal ions.

Curcumin, a polyphenol extracted from turmeric (Curcuma longa), has emerged as a potent multimodal cancer-preventing agent. It may attenuate the spread of cancer and render chemotherapy more effective. However, curcumin is neither well absorbed nor well retained in the blood,
resulting in low efficacy. In an attempt to enhance the potency and to improve the bioavailability of curcumin, new delivery agents, hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD)-modified GoldMag nanoparticles (CD-GMNs) were designed and synthesized to incorporate curcumin. The CD-GMNs
were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Thermo-gravimetric Analysis (TGA), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Dynamic Light Scattering measurements (DLS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) analyses. For the magnetic carrier
of CD-GMNs, the content of HP-β-CD was 26.9 wt%. CD-GMNs have a saturation magnetization of 22.7 emu/g with an average hydrodynamic diameter of 80 nm. The curcumin loading, encapsulation efficiency and releasing properties in vitro were also investigated. The results showed
that the drug encapsulation ratio was 88% and the maximum curcumin loading capacity of CD-GMNs was 660 μg/5 mg. in vitro drug release studies showed a controlled and pH-sensitive curcumin release over a period of one week. Collectively, our data suggest that HP-β-CD-modified
GoldMag nanoparticles can be considered to form a promising delivery system for curcumin to tumor sites. Targeting can be achieved by the combined effects of the application of an external magnetic field and the effect on drug release of lower pH values often found in the tumor microenvironment.

To address the problem of excessive Cd (II) content in selenium-rich soil and water in Enshi region, this experiment utilized ion imprinting for selective adsorption of cadmium, which made the separation of selenium and cadmium possible. A novel attapulgite-based Cd(II) ion-imprinted polymer (AF-IIP) was prepared with the surface imprinting technique, using magnetic attapulgite as the matrix and (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane (MPS) as the functional monomer. SEM, XRD, VSM, FT-IR and EDS elemental analysis were performed to confirm the structural transformations and compositional changes of the materials during the preparation process. The optimal pH, optimal time, adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms during the adsorption of Cd (II) by ion-imprinted polymers were investigated. The experimental results showed that the optimum pH of the adsorption process was 6.0 and the maximum adsorption amount was 49.0 mg·g −1 . In the presence of competitive ions, the adsorption capacity of AF-IIP for Cd (II) is much larger than that of Se ions, indicating that AF-IIP has good selectivity. The adsorption reaction conformed to the Langmuir isotherm model and kinetic data were more suitable to be explained by pseudo-second-order model. Furthermore, XPS analysis confirmed that Cd(II) adsorption primarily occurs via interactions with thiol (-SH) groups. In addition, regeneration tests have shown that AF-IIP was reusable and stable.

Simultaneous regulation and control of non-linear second-harmonic-generation (SHG) coefficients (deff) and linear birefringence (Δn) of non-centrosymmetric (NCS) crystals is a crucial aspect of improving the non-linear optical (NLO) performance, yet it remains a huge challenge in modern laser techniques and science. Herein, a series of melilite-type oxide-derived NCS oxychalcogenides, Sr2MGe2OS6 (M = Mn, Zn, and Cd), are successfully designed and synthesized through a facile partial isovalent chemical substitution strategy. These isostructural compounds crystallize in the tetragonal NCS space group P4̅21m (no. 113) and feature unique two-dimensional Cairo pentagonal tiling layers composed of heteroligand [GeOS3] and tetrahedral [MS4] asymmetric building units (ABUs). Compared to the parent melilite-type oxides, the derived title compounds not only successfully realize the phase matchability transformation [i.e., from non-phase-matching (NPM) to phase-matching (PM)] but also greatly improve the IR-NLO performance (especially, simultaneously boosting deff and Δn). Sr2CdGe2OS6 exhibits the best comprehensive performance among oxychalcogenides, including a wide PM cutoff edge (>525 nm), a strong deff (0.8 × AgGaS2), a giant laser-induced damage threshold (19.2 × AgGaS2), a large band gap (3.62 eV), as well as a broad transmission cutoff region (0.28–12.0 μm). Furthermore, highly distorted [GeOS3] ABU in this melilite-type structure is proved to be the profitable bifunctional NLO-active unit, which can contribute to the search and design of novel IR-NLO crystals with a large Δn and a strong deff based on the experimental results and theoretical calculations. This work demonstrates the first examples of PM melilite-type oxychalcogenides and offers new perspectives on the phase matchability transformation through the partial isovalent chemical substitution approach, which will play a constructive role in the future design of high-performance IR-NLO heteroanionic materials.

Ternary hydrogels composed of poly[acrylamide- co -2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] [P(AM- co -DMAEMA)], poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and β -cyclodextrin ( β -CD) were fabricated based on the multiple physical interactions such as inclusion complexation, hydrogen bonding and polymer crystallinity , and exhibited high storage modulus . To illustrate the individual role of each physical interaction, symmetrical investigation has been performed. P(AM- co -DMAEMA)s with two compositions , prepared by radical polymerization at −20 °C below the freezing point of reaction medium of water, were served as the inclusion guest for the inclusion host of β -CD. The inclusion complex between dimethylaminoethyl group of DMAEMA and β -CD was identified through 2D NOESY NMR spectroscopy . Hydrogen bonding between each pairs of hydrogel components was confirmed with FTIR analysis and contributed the second form of crosslinkage. Under freezing polymerization and further freezing-thawing treatment, PVA component tended to crystallize to serve as the third type of physical crosslinkage, which was recognized with X-ray diffraction. Rheological and thermo-gravimetrical analysis was used to inspect the modulus and thermal stability of the hydrogels, respectively. Three hydrogels of P(AM- co -DMAEMA)/PVA-g- β -CD, P(AM- co -DMAEMA)/PVA/ β -CD and P(AM- co -DMAEMA)/PVA were synthesized under the same condition to make the comparison. The whole results disclosed the strong dependence of hydrogel properties on the hydrogel components, reflecting the synergistic effects of different physical crosslinkages for the formation of those physical hydrogels.

Purpose Antibiotics often coexist with heavy metals in contaminated soils, making their behaviors more complicated than their individual presences. Sorption to soil components deeply affects the mobility, bioavailability, and fate of contaminants. However, limited studies have investigated the cosorption characteristics of tetracycline (TC) and heavy metals to typical soil minerals, particularly phyllosilicates. Materials and methods This study investigates the effect of Cd(II) on TC sorption by kaolinite (Kao, 1:1-type) and montmorillonite (Mont, 2:1-type) via isothermal adsorption, coupled with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Results and discussion Isothermal results show that TC sorption on both kaolinite (Kao, 1:1-type) and montmorillonite (Mont, 2:1-type) is little affected by Cd(II) at pH 4.5 but increases significantly at pH 8.5. The overall effect of Cd(II) on TC sorption depends on the intensities of two positive processes, i.e., (1) the formation of soluble Cd-TC complex increases sorption compared to free TC molecules and (2) the formation of a ternary clay-Cd-TC complex at clay variable edge sites increases sorption, and one negative process, i.e., competition of Cd(II) with cationic and zwitterionic TC species at the permanently charged sites decreases sorption. XRD analyses demonstrate that TC intercalates into the interlayer ( d 001 = 18.7 Å) of Mont as one monolayer parallel molecule both with and without Cd(II) but adsorbs predominately on external surface of Kao. FTIR results suggest a flat-lying horizontal configuration of adsorbed TC molecules on clays, accompanied by a strong complexation between the carbonyl and amino groups of TC molecules and the surfaces. Besides, the presence of Cd(II) more or less facilitates this complexation. Conclusions We propose that Cd(II) can significantly promote TC adsorption on clay minerals at alkaline pH rather than acidic pH. TC and Cd(II) interact intensely and form strong surface complexation on clay surfaces. Hence, coexistence with Cd(II) may lower the mobility and thus the bioavailability of TC in alkaline soils, which provides a new direction for soil remediation by regulating soil pH using alkaline materials. Humic substances (HSs) possess abundant oxygen-containing functional groups that theoretically confer exceptional complexation capacity for heavy metal (HM) remediation; however, their speciation-dependent extractive behaviors across multi-metal contaminated soils remain insufficiently quantified. This study systematically evaluated the washing performance of six humic-based agents derived from weathered coal and lignite on soils contaminated with representative cadmium and arsenic species. Batch sequential washing experiments demonstrated that a four-cycle extraction at a liquid-to-solid ratio of 30:1 achieved high average cumulative removal efficiencies of 92.9% for Cd and 83.0% for As, with weathered coal-derived humic acid (HAW) exhibiting the highest removal efficiency. Microstructural and spectroscopic characterizations indicated that abundant oxygen-containing functional groups and highly condensed aromatic structures served as the core drivers for HM complexation. Furthermore, the XGBoost-SHAP model accurately predicted Cd leaching efficiency, identifying washing times as the most influential variable, followed by contaminant speciation, leaching agent type, and L/S ratio. The substantially lower performance for As suggests that arsenic leaching is governed by additional physicochemical factors beyond the four operational variables, highlighting the need for speciation-related descriptors in future modeling efforts. Overall, this work demonstrates the technical feasibility of converting low-rank coal resources into high-value, sustainable soil washing agents, offering robust data-driven insights for the targeted design of site remediation strategies.

Organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) are widely used worldwide. However, OPs residues can cause serious health problems. Traditional analytical approaches for OPs detection fail to offer simple, real-time, and visualization. Herein, Ultrathin Eu 3+ @Cd-MOF nanosheets with a thickness of 6 nm were synthesized via a simple solution route. Due to the antenna effect between 4,4′-dicarboxydiphenyl ether (H 2 OBA), 2,2′-bipyridine (BPY), and Eu 3+ , the as-prepared nanosheets displayed characteristic fluorescence emission of Eu 3+ ions at 616 nm under the excitation of 323 nm. The strong fluorescence was quenched by p-nitrophenyl phosphate (PNPP) without any interference from other pesticide in aqueous systems; Eu 3+ @Cd-MOF nanosheets can serve as a highly sensitive probe for visualizing fluorescence and detecting PNPP in water systems with a low LOD of 65 nM and a rapid response time of 20 s. A systematic investigation of the sensing mechanism indicated that the combination of the photoelectron transfer (PET) and the inner filter effect (IFT) resulted in the selective detection of PNPP. The luminescence detection approach offers a rapid, low-cost, and visualized detection method for PNPP remaining on fruits and vegetables surfaces.

In this work, a novel nanosystem with a sandwich-like structure was synthesized via face-to-face combination of two pieces of waste cotton fabrics (CFs) carrying ferrous sulfide (FeS) and carboxyl-functionalized ferroferric oxide microsphere (CFFM), respectively, and the obtained nanosystem was named as FeS/CFFM/CF. Therein, FeS has high reduction and adsorption capabilities for hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), CFFM possesses a high adsorption ability on cadmium ion (Cd(II)) through electrostatic attraction and chelation, and CF displays high immobilization ability for FeS and CFFM and adsorption performance on Cd(II). FeS/CFFM/CF could simultaneously remove Cr(VI) and Cd(II) from water and inhibit the uptake of Cr and Cd by fish and water spinach, ensuring the food safety. Besides, this technology could efficiently control the migration of Cr(VI) and Cd(II) in the sand–soil mixture, which was favorable to prevent their wide diffusion. Importantly, FeS/CFFM/CF possessed a high flexibility and could be conveniently produced with needed scale and shape and easily separated from water and soil, displaying a promising approach to remediate Cr(VI)-/Cd(II)-contaminated water and soil and a huge application potential.

Two novel metal complexes, Zn(CAPHPD) 3 (C 5 H 10 NH + ) and Cd(CAPHPD) 2 ·2H 2 O were prepared by simple solvent evaporation method, named as complexes 1 and 2 respectively. The physicochemical properties were systematically characterized. Single crystal X-ray diffraction patterns show that the two complexes crystallize in Monoclinic and Triclinic systems with trigonal bipyramidal and octahedral configurations, respectively. Activity experiments demonstrated that the complex exhibited lower cytotoxicity to normal NIH/3T3 cells and enhanced toxicity to 4T1 breast cancer cells compared to the ligand. IC 50 showed that coordination of Zn 2+ or Cd 2+ significantly reduced the toxic effect of the ligand on non-cancerous cells, while substantially enhancing its anticancer activity. The results of FITC/PI double staining showed that the ligand and complex 2 could induce cell death in both 4T1 and A549 cells, while complex 1 could specifically promote late apoptosis. The ROS level was further detected by DCFH-DA fluorescence probe method, and it was found that the ROS content in 4T1 cells treated with ligand was significantly lower than complex 1 and complex 2. This result is consistent with the data from the double-staining experiment, indicating that the ROS-dependent apoptosis pathway plays a key role in the anticancer mechanism of the complex.

Neohesperidin (NH), a bioactive flavanone glycoside, exhibits multifaceted pharmacological properties including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. However, its clinical application is severely constrained by inherent physicochemical limitations such as poor aqueous solubility and instability under physiological conditions. To address these challenges, this study developed a dual-carrier nano-liposomal system through the synergistic integration of phospholipid complexation and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) inclusion technologies. Two formulations—NH-PC (phospholipid complex) and NH-PC-CD (phospholipid/HP-β-CD hybrid)—were fabricated via ultrasonication-assisted ethanol precipitation. Comprehensive characterization using FTIR and PXRD confirmed the amorphous dispersion of NH within lipid bilayers, with complete elimination of crystalline diffraction peaks, indicative of molecular-level interactions between NH’s hydroxyl groups and phospholipid polar moieties. The engineered nanosystems demonstrated remarkable solubility enhancement, achieving 321.77 μg/mL (NH-PC) and 318.75 μg/mL (NH-PC-CD), representing 2.01- and 1.99-fold increases over free NH. Encapsulation efficiencies exceeded 95% for both formulations, with sustained release profiles revealing 60.81% (NH-PC) and 80.78% (NH-PC-CD) cumulative release over 72 h, governed predominantly by non-Fickian diffusion kinetics. In vitro gastrointestinal simulations highlighted superior bioaccessibility for NH-PC-CD (66.35%) compared to NH-PC (58.52%) and free NH (20.85%), attributed to enhanced stability against enzymatic degradation. Storage stability assessments further validated the robustness of HP-β-CD-modified liposomes, with NH-PC-CD maintaining consistent particle size (<3% variation) and encapsulation efficiency (>92%) over 30 days. Antioxidant evaluations demonstrated concentration-dependent DPPH radical scavenging, wherein nanoencapsulation significantly amplified NH’s activity compared to its free form. This study establishes a paradigm for dual-functional nanocarriers, offering a scalable strategy to optimize the delivery of hydrophobic nutraceuticals while addressing critical challenges in bioavailability and physiological stability.

Recently, graphene-based nanomaterials have attracted widespread attention as new electrode-modified materials for different electrochemical sensing platforms. However, graphene-based nanomaterials modified heavy metal sensors often have the disadvantages in that their detection ranges are not wide enough. To solve this problem, an easy and feasible approach derived from laser engraving technique to fabricate a high-quality 3D porous graphene-based heavy metal sensor with a quite wide detection range was established. The nitrogen-doped laser engraved graphene (N@LEG) was synthesized via introducing polyaniline (PANI) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as N-dopant. Herein, by coupling the unique electrochemical properties and the 3D porous structure framework with large electrochemical active surface areas of LEG with the strong metal ions affinity of N atoms, N@LEG modified glassy carbon electrode (N@LEG/GCE) with in-situ bismuth film modification has been successfully utilized for the simultaneous determination of Cd(II) and Pb(II) using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). After optimizing conditions, the proposed sensor exhibits quite wide linear ranges varying from 5 to 10 g L −1 and 10 to 380 g L −1 for Cd(II), and 0.5 to 10 μg L −1 and 10 μg L −1 to 380 μg L −1 for Pb(II), respectively. In addition, the detection limits are calculated to be 1.08 g L −1 (S/N = 3) for Cd(II) and 0.16 g L −1 (S/N = 3) for Pb(II), which are nearly 3 times and 60 times less than the guideline values of the drinking water presented by the World Health Organization (WHO), for Cd(II) and Pb(II), respectively. Furthermore, the results describe satisfactory advantages of remarkable sensitivity, selectivity, anti-interference, repeatability, reproducibility and stability. Besides, the fabricated sensor is proved to be a potential perspective to detect Cd(II) and Pb(II) in actual water samples.
