ZIF-8/MS Hybrid Sponge via Secondary Growth for Efficient Removal of Pb(II) and Cu(II)

Bian Hang,Li Peng,Ma Yu,Liu Lin,Li Dong,Zhang Ning

In recent years, the surge in industrialization and urbanization has led to the release of a significant amount of heavy metal ions into water. These ions, when present in drinking water, can enter the human body and cause irreversible health problem. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have drawn considerable attention for their outstanding ability to remove these heavy metal ions. However, MOF powders tend to aggregate in water, reducing their adsorption efficiency and potentially leading to secondary environmental pollution. In this regard, the development of MOF composites that are highly adsorptive, recyclable, and maintain stable dispensability in water is crucial for heavy metal ions removal. Herein, the in situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) on melamine sponge (MS) using a secondary growth method is reported. The resultant composite sponges exhibit high efficiency in adsorbing Pb(II) and Cu(II) from water and maintain good reusability. These findings offer a promising method in efficiently eliminating Pb(II) and Cu(II) from aqueous solutions.

Enhanced adsorption of Cu(II) ions on chitosan microspheres functionalized with polyethylenimine-conjugated poly(glycidyl methacrylate) brushes

Li Lv,Jing Zhang,Shaojun Yuan,Liqiang Huang,Shengwei Tang,Bin Liang,Simo O. Pehkonen

To enhance the adsorption capacity of crosslinked chitosan (CCS) microspheres towards Cu(II) ions, well-defined poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) brushes were grafted onto the surfaces of CCS microspheres via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) for subsequent conjugation of polyethylenimine (PEI). The resultant PEI-grafted CCS (defined as CCS-g-PGMA-c-PEI) microsphere was used as an effective adsorbent to uptake Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution. Success in each functionalization step was ascertained by ATR-FTIR, XPS, SEM and water contact angle measurements. Batch adsorption experiments were performed to determine adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms and thermodynamics of Cu(II) ions on the CCS-g-PGMA-c-PEI microspheres. The adsorption equilibrium of Cu(II) ions on the microspheres was found to be rapidly established within 60 min at an optimal solution pH of 5.0, and the adsorption kinetics was well represented by the pseudo-second-order model, together with a significant effect of mass transfer on the Cu(II) adsorption rate. The Langmuir-fitted maximum adsorption capacity was about 3.58 mmol g−1 (229 mg g−1), and the calculated thermodynamic parameters demonstrated an endothermic and spontaneous adsorption process of Cu(II) ions. The PEI-grafted CCS microspheres also exhibited good regenerability and stability for recycle applications. The postulated adsorption mechanism was proposed to account for the adsorption process of Cu(II) ions on the CCS-g-PGMA-c-PEI microspheres.

A SERS nanoswitch based on Cu(II)-mediated dual-ligand AuNPs reversible aggregation for pyrophosphate ions detection

Weidan Na,Changjin Ou,Yijun Ming,Yuchong Gao,Lin Tian

Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) detection was not as accurate and reproducible as fluorometry due to some uncertainties such as operator's focus adjustment and difference between capillaries. Herein, the weak Raman signal (1640 cm −1 ) from water bending vibration is adopted as a benchmark to improve the practical applicability of Raman detection. Specifically, amygdalin and citrate sodium were applied as reducing and capping agent to synthesize dual-ligand gold nanoparticles (DL-AuNPs). Additionally, the cyano group of amygdalin can attach to the surface of DL-AuNPs and generate a primary SERS signal (2174 cm −1 ), which can be significantly enhanced by Cu(II) as DL-AuNPs aggregates. More importantly, the strong binding affinity between pyrophosphate ions (PPi) and Cu(II) redisperses DL-AuNPs and decreases the signal intensity, making the DL-AuNPs/Cu(II) SERS sensor promising for the detection of PPi. This proposed method presents a reliable SERS analysis with the stable water background calibration and broaden the application of SERS technique in aqueous solution target monitoring.

Bamboo Nanocellulose/Montmorillonite Nanosheets/Polyethyleneimine Gel Adsorbent for Methylene Blue and Cu(II) Removal from Aqueous Solutions

Xuelun Zhang,Feng Li,Xiyu Zhao,Jiwen Cao,Shuai Liu,You Zhang,Zihui Yuan,Xiaobo Huang,Cornelis F. De Hoop,Xiaopeng Peng,Xingyan Huang

In recent years, the scarcity of pure water resources has received a lot of attention from society because of the increasing amount of pollution from industrial waste. It is very important to use low-cost adsorbents with high-adsorption performance to reduce water pollution. In this work, a gel adsorbent with a high-adsorption performance on methylene blue (MB) and Cu(II) was prepared from bamboo nanocellulose (BCNF) (derived from waste bamboo paper) and montmorillonite nanosheet (MMTNS) cross-linked by polyethyleneimine (PEI). The resulting gel adsorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS), etc. The results indicated that the MB and Cu(II) adsorption capacities of the resulting gel adsorbent increased with the solution pH, contact time, initial concentration, and temperature before equilibrium. The adsorption processes of MB and Cu(II) fitted well with the fractal-like pseudo-second-order model. The maximal adsorption capacities on MB and Cu(II) calculated by the Sips model were 361.9 and 254.6 mg/g, respectively. The removal of MB and Cu(II) from aqueous solutions mainly included electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, hydrogen bonding interaction, etc. These results suggest that the resulting gel adsorbent is an ideal material for the removal of MB and Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. Keywords:gel;adsorption;nanocellulose;montmorillonite;methylene blue;heavy metal

Hesperetin-Cu(II) complex as potential α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitor: Inhibition mechanism and molecular docking

Xi Peng,Kai Liu,Xing Hu,Deming Gong,Guowen Zhang

Inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase activity is an effective way for controlling postprandial blood glucose-related diabetes. The study found that hesperetin-Cu(II) complex (Hsp-Cu(II)) exhibited a stronger inhibitory ability on α-amylase and α-glucosidase compared to hesperetin (Hsp), with smaller IC 50 values of Hsp-Cu(II) (60.3 ± 0.9 µM for α-amylase; 1.25 ± 0.03 µM for α-glucosidase) than Hsp (115.6 ± 1.1 µM for α-amylase; 55.2 ± 0.1 µM for α-glucosidase). Interestingly, Hsp-Cu(II) and acarbose exerted a synergistic effect on inhibition of α-glucosidase. The binding affinities of Hsp-Cu(II) to α-amylase and α-glucosidase were strong with the K a values (binding constant) in the magnitude order of 10 5 , which was 9 times larger than Hsp. After interacting, Hsp-Cu(II) reduced α-helix contents of α-amylase and α-glucosidase, resulting in a looser conformation of these two enzymes. Molecular simulations manifested that Hsp-Cu(II) bound to the active center of enzymes driven by hydrogen bonds and interacted with the key catalytic amino acids (α-amylase: Gln63, Asp300 and His305; α-glucosidase: Tyr158, Asp215, Glu277 and Glu411), altering the conformation of enzymes, blocking the entrance of substrates, ultimately reducing the activities of α-glucosidase and α-amylase. This study has demonstrated that Hsp-Cu(II) may be a promising candidate of functional nutritional additive and medicine for the prevention of diabetes.

Novel Polymer Material for Efficiently Removing Methylene Blue, Cu(II) and Emulsified Oil Droplets from Water Simultaneously

Jie Cao,Jianbei Zhang,Yuejun Zhu,Shanshan Wang,Xiujun Wang,Kaihe Lv

The pollution of water resources has become a worldwide concern. The primary pollutants including insoluble oil, toxic dyes, and heavy metal ions. Herein, we report a polymer adsorbent, named SPCT, to remove the above three contaminants from water simultaneously. The preparation process of SPCT contains two steps. Firstly, a hydrogel composed of sulfonated phenolic resin (SMP) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) was synthesized using glutaraldehyde (GA) as the crosslinking agent, and the product was named SPG. Then SPCT was prepared by the reaction between SPG and citric acid (CA) at 170 °C. SPCT exhibited an excellent performance for the removal of methylene blue (MB) and Cu(II) from aqueous solution. For a solution with a pollutant concentration of 50 mg L−1, a removal efficiency of above 90% could be obtained with a SPCT dosage of 0.2 g L−1for MB, or a SPCT dosage of 0.5 g L−1for Cu(II), respectively. SPCT also presented an interesting wettability. In air, it was both superhydrophilic and superoleophilic, and it was superoleophobic underwater. Therefore, SPCT could successfully separate oil-in-water emulsion with high separation efficiency and resistance to oil fouling. Additionally, SPCT was easily regenerated by using dilute HCl solution as an eluent. The outstanding performance of SPCT and the efficient, cost-effective preparation process highlight its potential for practical applications. Keywords:wastewater treatment;adsorption;emulsion separation;thermal crosslinking;superhydrophilicity

Magnetic-controlled aerogels from carboxylated cellulose and MnFe2O4 as a novel adsorbent for removal of Cu(II)

Wang Xue,Jiang Shengjun,Cui Sheng,Tang Yinhan,Pei Zifan,Duan Haoran

Abstract The pore structure of the regenerated cellulose hydrogel was used as a microreactor for generating magnetic MnFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles via in situ co-precipitation technology. Sodium periodate and sodium chlorite were used as oxidants, and the carboxyl modification of magnetic cellulose aerogels was achieved through a two-step oxidation reaction. The method used was convenient and environmental-friendly, and the raw materials were also green and non-toxic. The addition of magnetic nanoparticles promoted the adsorption and enabled the recycling of materials. The results showed that the adsorption equilibrium time was only 120 min and adsorption capacity could be increased by increasing the adsorption temperature. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cu(II) was 73.70 mg/g at 25 °C when the initial concentration of solution was150 mg/L. The adsorption behaviour towards Cu(II) followed the pseudo-secondary reaction kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model. According to the results of XPS, carboxyl and hydroxyl groups were the main active adsorption sites for Cu(II). Moreover, all the composite aerogels exhibited good reusability and could be easily separated from the water after adsorption. Preparation of a novel two-dimensional carbon material and enhancing Cu(II) ions removal by phytic acid

Wang Jing,Wen Xin,Yang Fan,Cao Zhanfang,Wang Shuai,Zhong Hong

A novel two-dimensional carbon material using phytic acid-functionalized graphene oxide was successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. Properties of the material were characterized by SEM, FT-IR, FITR-Rama and BET. Some factors like contact time, pH, and temperature were studied to investigate the adsorption characteristics on Cu(II) ions of the material. Experiment results showed that the material can reach equilibrium adsorption in 20 min and get maximum adsorption capacity (316.586 mg g) under the condition of pH 4.0, 304 K. The adsorption of Cu(II) ions was an exothermic and spontaneous process, and could be better simulated by the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich isotherm model.

Successive grafting of poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) brushes and melamine onto chitosan microspheres for effective Cu(II) uptake

Shaojun Yuan,Ping Zhang,Zhenyi Yang,Li Lv,Shengwei Tang,Bin Liang

Cross-linked chitosan (CCS) microspheres tethered with melamine-conjugated poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) brushes were synthesized by combination of surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of HEMA and subsequent covalent immobilization of melamine onto the chain ends of PHEMA brushes. The as-synthesized CCS microsphere was used as a novel adsorbent for effective uptake of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution. Success in each functionalization step was ascertained by SEM, ATR-FTIR and XPS characterization. Batch adsorption experimental results demonstrated that the adsorption equilibrium of Cu(II) ions on the melamine-grafted CCS microsphere was rapidly established within 20 min, and the adsorption process was found to be governed by intra-particle diffusion and chemisorption processes. The Langmuir-fitted maximum adsorption capacity of Cu(II) ions on the as-synthesized CCS microspheres was as high as circa 4.67 mmol L −1 (299 mg g −1 ). The calculated thermodynamic parameters revealed an endothermic and spontaneous adsorption process of Cu(II) ions on the melamine-grafted CCS microspheres. XPS spectra revealed that the adsorption mechanism was attributed to coordination (or chelation) interactions between amino (or hydroxyl) groups with cationic Cu(II) ions.

Preparation of sludge–cyanobacteria composite carbon for synergistically enhanced co-removal of Cu(II) and Cr(VI)

Lixin Li,Ying Lv,Chao Jia,Dawei Yin,Zilong Dong,Zhaoshun Zhan,Jiazhen Han,Jun Zhang

Traditional sludge disposal is currently restricted by the risk of secondary pollution. Sludge carbon material has gained widespread attention because of its low cost and environmentally sustainable properties. However, owing to the high ash content and low–energy density of sludge, sludge pyrolysis alone has certain limitations, and the performance of carbon materials needs to be improved. Herein, a sludge–cyanobacteria composite carbon (SCC) was easily synthesized, and the adsorption process of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) by SCC was examined. SCC-700-2-50% exhibited a high S BET (1047.54 m 2 /g) and developed pore structure rich in functional groups (such as –NH, –OH, and C–O). The combination of pore structure and functional groups improved the adsorption performance of SCC. The adsorption processes exhibited a synergistic effect in a binary system: the q m of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) were 386 mg/g and 341 mg/g, respectively, and the selectivity of Cu(II) adsorption by SCC was greater than Cr(VI). The adsorption process, examined by SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XPS analysis, indicated that Cu(II) as a cationic interface strengthens Cr(VI) adsorption through electrostatic interaction, and the anion Cr(VI) created a valid electrostatic shield against the electrostatic repulsion between H + and Cu(II), facilitating Cu(II) adsorption. SCC had great reusability: Cu(II) and Cr(VI) adsorption capacity were 90% and 84%, of the initial adsorption capacity, respectively, after six cycles. This study demonstrates the prospect of SCC as a valid adsorbent for multiple heavy metal contaminations removal.

Surface ion imprinted bagasse for selective removal of Cu (II) from the leaching solution of electroplating sludge

Jun-xia Yu,Hong-xia Li,Ru-yi Zhou,Xiao-di Li,Han-jun Wu,Chun-qiao Xiao,Ru-An Chi

Electroplating sludge containing heavy metal of copper is not only a toxic and harmful solid waste, but also a valuable resource that could be recycled. In this study, a novel Cu (II) ion imprinted bagasse was prepared and used as a sorbent to selectively recycle copper from the leaching solution of electroplating sludge. The adsorption performances of the imprinted bagasse for Cu (II) were studied and compared with that of the non-imprinted bagasse. Results showed that the adsorption capacity of the imprinted bagasse was 32.0 mg g -1 , which was higher than that of the non-imprinted bagasse (22.9 mg g -1 ). Adsorption of Cu (II) on the imprinted bagasse could be finished within 70 min and the high adsorption amount could be achieved in a wide pH range from 4.0 to 7.0. Regeneration experiment verified that the imprinted bagasse could be used repeatedly without obvious ability loss. Competitive adsorption results showed that the imprinted bagasse had much higher adsorption capacity and selectivity toward Cu (II) than the non-imprinted bagasse. Due to the spatial and complex effect, the imprinted bagasse showed stronger adsorption affinity toward Cu (II) than the co-ions of Ca (II), Zn (II), Mg (II), Cd (II), and Pb (II), and thus could selectively adsorb Cu (II) from the complex leaching solution of electroplating sludge. Therefore, the imprinted biosorbent had excellent application prospect in recycling metal ions from the electroplating sludge.

HKUST-1-Derived Cu@Cu(I)@Cu(II)/Carbon adsorbents for ciprofloxacin removal with high adsorption performance

Fei Yu,Xueting Bai,Mingxing Liang,Jie Ma

Considering the increasingly serious levels of antibiotic pollution, it is necessary to find new and efficient adsorbents. In this study, the adsorptive removal of a model quinolone antibiotic, ciprofloxacin (CIP), from wastewater is presented using a metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon. HKUST-1-derived carbon (HDC-1100) was obtained by high-temperature carbonization of the HKUST-1 precursor at 1100 °C. HDC-1100 has a regular octahedron shape decorated with Cu/Cu 2 O particles and has a microporous and mesoporous structure with abundant oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface. Within 48 h, HDC-1100 could reach adsorption equilibrium for 30 mg·L -1 CIP, and the kinetic data were fitted with a pseudo-first-order model and a pseudo-second-order model. In this study, the maximum adsorption capacity of HDC-1100 for CIP was as high as 592 mg·g −1 . The high adsorption capacity is attributed mainly to metal–organic complexation, electrostatic interactions, and hydrogen bonding. Also, the effects of environmental factors, such as pH, ionic strength, and humic acid, on the adsorption capacity were considered. This study is significant for the treatment of high-concentration antibiotic-polluted wastewater.
