Jing Bai,Yunpo Li,Rui Wang,Ke Huang,Qingyi Zeng,Jinhua Li,Baoxue Zhou

In this study, a novel three dimensional (3D) ZnO/Cu2O nanowire (NW) photocathode material with highly efficient photoelectrocatalytic performance was prepared on a copper substrate using simple, cost-effective wet chemical oxidation and hydrothermal growth methods. FE-SEM, TEM, XRD and XPS were used to investigate the 3D ZnO/Cu2O NWs, revealing the formation of the high density orientated Cu2O NW cores and ZnO NW shells. Compared with the pure Cu2O NWs, the 3D ZnO/Cu2O NWs showed a larger photocurrent (−4.55 mA cm−2) and better stability under AM 1.5G illumination (100 mW cm−2). In light of the high effective surface area and the ability to facilitate good electron transportation, this unique nanostructure will be favorable for efficient photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) water splitting and organic pollutant degradation.

Engineering Mica/TiO2/Cu2O ternary nanomaterial for enhanced thermal insulation and antibacterial coating

Xiaoya Ding,Yi Wang,Shuiquan Han,Dun Zhang,Peng Zhang

In moist environments, indoor building materials serve as significant substrates for microbial growth. A novel ternary composite pigment of mica/TiO 2 /Cu 2 O has been developed for the coating of a photocatalyst with antibacterial and thermal insulation properties. Spectroscopic analysis and light absorption studies were employed to confirm the stable synthesis of heterojunction structures. Compared to TiO 2 and Cu 2 O, the mica-heterojunction nanosheet demonstrates exceptional antibacterial efficacy, achieving 99.99% bacterial reduction against S. aureus and E. coli within 1 h. Furthermore, real-world irradiation experiments showcase the superior cooling capabilities of the coating. Photoluminescence spectroscopy indicates that the inclusion of mica effectively suppresses electron-hole pair recombination in the heterojunction, resulting in robust photocatalytic disinfection. This study presents a structured methodology for developing a promising antibacterial thermal insulation coating.

Efficient photoelectrocatalysis of CO2 for C2+ production by bridged structure Cu2O-BiOBr heterojunction

Xueru Zhao,Jinlong Wu,Jiaxin Bai,Ting Zhang,Zhenli Lv,Maoxu Wang,Min Zhu,Jing Li,Feng Li

Cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) is a promising material for photoelectrocatalytic CO 2 reduction (PEC-CO 2 RR); however, its widespread application is hindered by issues such as photocorrosion, structural instability, and low selectivity toward desirable products. In this work, a Cu 2 O-BiOBr nanohybrid catalyst with excellent visible light responsiveness are successfully developed using energy band structure matching and morphology modulation strategies. This heterostructure exhibits a three-dimensional bridge-like architecture composed of interwoven one-dimensional nanorods and two-dimensional nanosheets. Cu 2 O acts as a surface electron-rich active center, while BiOBr functions as both a co-catalyst and photogenerated electron storage, enabling efficient photoelectrocatalytic conversion of CO 2 under visible light irradiation. That is, the optimized Cu 2 O-BiOBr-2 catalyst achieves a C 2+ Faraday efficiency (FE) of 51% at −0.6 V vs. RHE, which is 2.55 times exceeding the pure Cu 2 O catalysts, The findings obtained from in-situ spectroscopic characterization reveal that the efficient transport channel of the constructed heterojunction enhances charge transfer efficiency at the catalyst interface and boosts redox capacity, improving both efficiency and stability of Cu 2 O in PEC-CO 2 RR. This work provides new insights for constructing novel heterojunctions.

Nanoparticles of Cu2O and TiO2 on Ti3C2Tx Heterostructures for Ultrafast Nonenzymatic Glucose Sensing

Hui Xue,Jingli Yin,Weifeng Li,Yumei Long

The exploration of enzyme-mimic nanocomposites to replace commercial enzymes is challenging in the construction of biosensors with high performance. Herein, an ultrafast response nonenzymatic glucose sensor was developed based on a Cu2O–TiO2/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposite, which was prepared via an in situ redox procedure using Ti3C2Tx nanosheets both as a reducing agent and a carrier substrate. Structural characterizations, including X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), revealed that Cu2O nanoparticles with a size of 10–30 nm are uniformly distributed on the surface of the Ti3C2Tx nanosheets and form close contacts through Ti–O–Cu bonds, resulting in favorable stability of the system. The unique heterostructure of Cu2O–TiO2/Ti3C2Tx can produce abundant active sites and facilitate electron transfer, demonstrating enhanced catalytic activity in the electrooxidation of glucose. Consequently, the electrochemical sensor fabricated by modifying a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with Cu2O–TiO2/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites exhibited excellent analytical properties for glucose detection, including a fast response time of 0.1 s, a low detection limit of 0.67 μM, and a high sensitivity of 267 μA mM–1 cm–2. In addition, the developed method possesses good anti-interference ability and superior stability and thus has been successfully applied for real sample monitoring. This study offers a way to construct Ti3C2Tx-based heterostructures with tunable physiochemical properties and expands their use in the electrochemical field.

Carbon Quantum Dots/Cu2O Photocatalyst for Room Temperature Selective Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol

Zhuang Tong,Yunliang Liu,Xin Wu,Yuanyuan Cheng,Jingwen Yu,Xinyue Zhang,Naiyun Liu,Xiang Liu,Haitao Li

The luminescence properties and excellent carrier transfer ability of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have attracted much attention in the field of photocatalysis. In this work, we loaded the CQDs on the surface of Cu2O to enhance the visible-light property of Cu2O. Furthermore, the composite was used for selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. The composite catalyst achieved high selectivity (90%) for benzaldehyde at room temperature, leveraging its visible-light-induced electron transfer properties and its photocatalytic activity for hydrogen peroxide decomposition. ·OH was shown to be the main reactive oxygen species in the selective oxidation reaction of benzyl alcohol. The formation of heterostructures of CQDs/Cu2O promoted charge carrier separation and provided a fast channel for photoinduced electron transfer. This novel material exhibited enhanced levels of activity and stability for selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol. Potential applications of carbon quantum dot composites in conventional alcohol oxidation reactions are shown.

Surface Oxygen Species Modulation of Cu2O/Cu Foam for Enhanced Nitrate-to-Ammonia Conversion

Yanjun Wang,Yuancai Lv,Yifan Liu,Minghua Liu

The electrochemical reduction of nitrate for ammonia production is recognized as a viable method to support a sustainable artificial nitrogen cycle. Extensive research has been focused on enhancing the performance and selectivity of electrocatalysts for NO 3 - RR (nitrate reduction reaction). In this study, we show that modifying the surface oxygen species via thermal treatment and dispersant addition is an effective way to improve the NO 3 - RR performance of Cu 2 O/CF. Using advanced spectroscopic methods, we show that thermal treatment and dispersant addition can greatly boost the generation of oxygen vacancies and hydroxyl groups on the surface of Cu 2 O/CF. Electrocatalytic reaction rate experiment, in-situ FT-IR, DEMS analyses and DFT calculations further suggest that oxygen vacancies on the Cu 2 O/CF surface promote the adsorption and conversion of nitrate and its intermediate, nitrite. Meanwhile, hydroxyl groups promoted the selective hydrogenation of NO to NH 3 . Our findings highlight the essential role of surface oxygen species in NO 3 - RR and provide a foundation for designing advanced electrocatalysts through surface engineering approaches.

Carbon-Bridged-Mediated Electron Transfer in Cu2O–ZnO Nanocomposites Enabling ROS-Driven Antimicrobial Activity

Sehrish Ibrahim,Wensheng Xie,Xiaofeng Li,Guofeng Li,Xing Wang

Engineering interfacial electronic interactions between physically distinct metal oxides without phase transformation, doping, or lattice fusion remains a central challenge of interface science. Conventional Cu2O–ZnO systems rely on heterojunction formation or compositional mixing, whereas carbon-mediated electronic coupling between discrete phases remains largely unexplored. Here, we report strongly electronically coupled carbon-bridged Cu2O/ZnO nanocomposites (Cu2O–C–ZnO NCs) synthesized by incorporating spherical Cu2O and diamond-shaped ZnO nanoparticles into a gallic-acid-derived carbon framework. Structural and compositional analyses confirm the coexistence of crystalline Cu2O and ZnO interlocked in a homogeneous carbon matrix, with oxygenated carbon functionalities verified spectroscopically. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals binding energy shifts in Cu and Zn core levels, providing direct evidence of interfacial electronic coupling and charge redistribution without lattice fusion or heterojunction formation. This electronic interface coupling helps regulate charge transfer between the oxide materials, allowing the controlled release of metal ions and enhancing the generation of reactive oxygen species. As a functional consequence, the NCs exhibit significant antibacterial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, as well as substantial antialgal activity against freshwater species. Mechanistic evidence validates that the activity stems from a synergy of phenomena, including controlled ion release, ROS, and membrane damage due to oxidative stress, supported by findings from enzymatic and cellular assays. These results demonstrate that carbon-mediated interfacial electronic coupling is a viable method for controlling the surface reactivity of multicomponent oxide systems with the intact structural integrity of individual components.

Magnetically Recyclable Fe3O4/Cu2O Heterojunction for Photo-Assisted Peroxymonosulfate Activation Toward Bisphenol A Degradation

Xiuzhu Ma,Fengyuan Tian,Xinghao Yan,Dan Xue

Efficient removal of bisphenol A (BPA) from aquatic environments is urgently needed due to its toxicity and persistence. Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes offer a promising solution, and their effectiveness critically depends on catalysts with efficient charge transfer and stable interfacial properties. Herein, a magnetically recyclable Fe 3 O 4 /Cu 2 O heterojunction was constructed via covalent esterification between polydopamine and citrate layers on each component. Under optimized conditions (catalyst: 90 mg/L, PMS: 2.0 g/L, BPA: 20 mg/L, pH 11), the heterojunction achieved 98% BPA removal within 60 min and retained over 90% of its initial activity after five cycles. Mechanism investigation confirmed •OH and SO 4 • − were the dominant reactive species and elucidated a plausible BPA degradation pathway. This work provided an efficient and recyclable photocatalyst for water treatment and establishes an interfacial engineering strategy for constructing advanced catalysts with promising applications in the environmental and energy fields. Graphical Schematic illustration of the proposed mechanism for PMS activation and BPA degradation over the Fe 3 O 4 /Cu 2 O heterojunction.

Local oxophilicity Sm incorporation drives structural alteration of Cu2O/Cu catalyst in CO2 electroreduction

Zihao Wei,Yulin Qin,Mengbo Zou,Lin Jia,Haorun Li,Yuekun Zhang,Jinyu Wang,Zeyu Guo,Hao Wu,Zeyu Zhang,Shanghong Zeng

The rational surface regulation of Cu electrocatalysts through doping foreign components has emerged as a feasible pathway in electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction. Herein, the catalysts comprising the Cu 0 -Sm 3+ -Cu + sites are reported to explore the doping-driven the alteration of surface structure and properties. The incorporation of Sm with oxygen affinity in Cu 2 O/Cu decreases the crystallite sizes and evokes lattice expansion of Cu 2 O and Cu to generate surface defects. The interaction of Cu 0 , Sm 3+ and Cu + promotes dual-carbon production by stabilizing Cu + and enhancing *CO coverage and water dissociation. Our findings therefore reveal the role of Sm in promoting beneficial changes of Cu-based electrocatalysts.

Lignin confined in wood as a sensitizer for Cu2O: Study on photocatalytic performance enhancement

Wenxuan Wang,Feihan Yu,Ming He,Shengkai Liu,Huiling Li,Junreng Liu,Xi Li,Jing Wang,Guihua Yang,Daxin Liang

Wood, as a renewable resource, is mainly composed of cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose. Lignin is spatially confined within the rigid cage-like structure formed by cellulose and hemicellulose, which restricts its rotation and thereby enhances the phosphorescence emission of lignin. To investigate the effect of the phosphorescence emission properties of lignin on photocatalysts, this study employed a demethylation reaction to perform in-situ modification of lignin in wood. Through the chelating effect of demethylated lignin, cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) photocatalysts were anchored on the wood surface via an in-situ synthesis method, forming a stable heterostructure. The design of lignin-sensitized catalysts with lignin spatially confined in wood was verified using the catalytic reduction reaction of 4-aminophenol (4-AP). The results show that the loading of the stable heterostructure and the sensitization effect of spatially confined lignin can increase the photocatalytic efficiency of Cu 2 O by 23.08 times, which provides an effective approach for the high-value application of wood.

Unveiling pH-Dependent Mechanistic Shifts in Cu2O-Catalyzed Nitrate Electroreduction for Selective Ammonia Synthesis

Zizi Wang,Fengchen Zhou,Binxin Lv,Jiayue Yu,Junjun Zhang,Yifan Zhang,Yang Wu,Yong Wang,Wen Luo

The electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) offers a sustainable route for ammonia synthesis, yet its practical implementation requires catalysts adaptable to pH fluctuations inherent in industrial wastewater systems. Herein, Cu 2 O nanocubes as a model catalyst is synthesized and decoupled the pH-dependent reaction mechanisms with systematic experimental investigations. In acid electrolytes, the catalyst exhibited 93.3% faradaic efficiency for NH 3 with a yield rate of 34.6 mg h −1 mg cat −1 at −0.7 V versus. RHE. In contrast, in alkaline and neutral electrolytes, NH 3 synthesis is impeded by the formation of NO 2 - which served as the predominant by-product. Through operando infrared spectroscopy analysis, proton availability as the pivotal regulator is identified: Acidic media facilitates the further conversion of * NO 2 intermediates into NH 3 via the NOH pathway, whereas H + -deficient environments in neutral/alkaline conditions divert reaction flux through the NHO pathway. This mechanistic elucidation establishes proton concentration as a key parameter for steering nitrate-to-ammonia conversion efficiency.
