A colorimetric chemosensor for F− based on Alizarin complexone and layered double hydroxide ultrafilms

Yankun Jia,Zhixiong Li,Wenying Shi

The fabrication of the ordered colorimetric molecule/layered double hydroxide (LDH) ultrathin films (UTFs) by the LBL deposition technique was reported, and demonstrates their application as a colorimetric chemosensor for F − . The structural and surface morphology studies show that the UTF is continuous and uniform with stacking order in the normal direction of the substrate. The LDH nanoparticles isolate Alizarin complexone (AC) molecules from each other. The AC/LDH UTFs display a stepwise and regular growth of upon increasing deposition cycles proved by UV–vis absorption and a periodical layered structure perpendicular to the substrates with a thickness of 5.96–6.28   nm per bilayer observed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Moreover, the (AC/LDH) 20 UTF displays an excellent behavior as colorimetric chemosensor for F − with a low detection limit (12.9   μM), good regeneration and reversibility , high stability (light and storage stability) as well as selectivity. In addition, the mechanism of measurement–regeneration cycle for the colorimetric chemosensor indicates F − enters/departs from the AC/LDH UTF giving rise to reversible change in chemical composition and surface morphology of the UTF. Therefore, this work provides new opportunities for fabrication and application of chromophore/LDH UTFs as colorimetric chemosensors.

19 F NMR enantiodiscrimination and diastereomeric purity determination of amino acids, dipeptides, and amines

Lihua Xu,Qiong Wang,Yan Liu,Songsen Fu,Yufen Zhao,Shaohua Huang,Biling Huang

Chiral amino-group compounds are of significance for human health, such as biogenic amino acids (AAs), dipeptides, and even various drugs. Enantiospecific discrimination of these chiral compounds is vital in diagnosing diseases, identifying pathological biomarkers and enhancing pharmaceutical chemistry research. Here, we report a simple and rapid 19F NMR-based strategy to differentiate chiral AAs, dipeptides, and amines, that were derivatized with (R)-2-(2-fluorophenyl)-2-hydroxyacetic acid ((R)-2FHA). As a result, 19 proteinogenic AAs (37 isomers) as well as Gly could be concurrently resolved. Moreover, various mirror-image dipeptides, such as Ser–His, Leu–Leu, and Ala–Ala, were commendably recognized. Intriguingly, we found that the absolute configuration of AAs in the N-terminus of dipeptides decided the relative 19F chemical shifts between two enantiomers. Besides, the ability of this method for enantiodiscrimination was further demonstrated by non-AA amines, including aromatic and aliphatic amines, and even amines having chiral centers several carbons away from the amino-group. The structurally similar antibiotics, amoxicillin and ampicillin, were well discriminated. Furthermore, this method accurately determines the de or dr values of non-racemic mixtures. Therefore, our strategy provides an effective approach for 19F NMR-based enantiodiscrimination and diastereomeric purity determination of amino-group compounds.

Qingbo Yang,Chuangqi Mo,Pengfei Cui,Shuwen Zhou,Lin Qiu,Pengju Jiang,Yang Xuan,Hai Huang,Cheng Wang,Jianhao Wang

Aims Bacterial infection is a significant factor contributing to the deterioration of wounds, and the misuse of antibiotics has exacerbated bacterial resistance. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a novel antibacterial strategy to replace conventional therapies. This study aims to construct a self-activated cascade reaction nanozyme, f-FeNC@GOx, which triggers a cascade reaction in the presence of glucose. This cascade reaction generates highly toxic hydroxyl radicals ( OH), thereby achieving the goal of eliminating bacteria and promoting wound healing. Material and methods In vitro antibacterial experiments, bacterial spread plate method, Live/Dead staining, and crystal violet staining were conducted to analyze the antibacterial ability and mechanism of f-FeNC@GOx. In vivo experiments, a mouse wound model was established, and H&E and Masson staining of wound tissues were performed to assess the antibacterial activity of the f-FeNC@GOx in vivo . Key findings The in vivo and in vitro experiments confirmed that f-FeNC@GOx exhibited significant antibacterial effect against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in the presence of glucose. Furthermore, it showed optimal wound healing performance in the wound models. Significance These findings suggested that f-FeNC@GOx was a novel and effective antibacterial nanomaterial, which provided a promising antibacterial strategy using nanoenzyme based cascade reaction.

Novel aminated F-Ce nanosheet mixed matrix membranes with controllable channels for CO2 capture

Meixue Zhao,Jianping Guo,Qingping Xin,Yanli Zhang,Xu Li,Xiaoli Ding,Lei Zhang,Lizhi Zhao,Hui Ye,Hong Li,Guangyu Xuan,Yuzhong Zhang

Membrane separation is a novel technology that has been widely studied for efficient CO 2 capture. This study aims to synthesize novel porous amino-functionalized nanosheets using PEI (polyethyleneimine) (PEI-F-Ce) and PEI-F-Ce/polyethylene oxide (PEO) mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). PEI-F-Ce nanosheets were prepared via the electrostatic self-assembly method, allowing for the adjustment of both lateral and pore sizes of the nanosheets by varying the PEI concentration. The MMMs loaded with 2 % PEI-F-Ce-2.5 nanosheets exhibit excellent CO 2 permeability (641 Barrer) and outstanding CO 2 /N 2 selectivity (70.1). These values surpassed those of pure PEO membranes by 62 % and 53 %, respectively, exceeding the 2019 upper bound. PEI-F-Ce-2.5 nanosheets with a stable pore channel 3.406 nm improved CO 2 transport and showed a large CO 2 adsorption capacity of 1.32 mmol g −1 , leading to enhanced the CO 2 /N 2 reaction selectivity. Moreover, the reversible reaction of CO 2 with –NH 2 enhanced the CO 2 /N 2 selectivity by 5.1 times at −20 °C, thereby highlighting its potential for cryogenic gas separation applications.

Synthesis of Co(OH)F@Al nanobelt array on various substrates for pyro-MEMS

Yuxiang Li,Xi Chen,Lei Zhang,Ruishan Han,Iftikhar Hussain,Xiaoxia Ma,Kaili Zhang

Metastable intermolecular composites (MICs) composed by solid fuel and oxidizer can undergo violent redox reaction with release of huge amount of energy. Integration of MIC with microelectromechanical-system (MEMS) is of particular interest to meet the demand of miniaturization in modern pyrotechnic devices. Meanwhile, fluorine-containing oxidizers are favored in MIC owing to their potential to fluorinate the oxide passivation layer in common elemental fuels. Herein, Co(OH)F was employed for the first time as a novel fluorine-containing oxidizer in Al-based MIC. Vertically aligned Co(OH)F@Al nanobelt arrays (NAs) with tunable morphology were successfully fabricated on a variety of substrates (Si, glass, Ni, Cu, Ti) via a facile hydrothermal synthesis followed by electron beam evaporation. The whole fabrication process is highly compatible with modern MEMS technology. The thermal behavior of pure Co(OH)F and Co(OH)F@Al composites was comprehensively investigated by TG-DSC and a series of ex-situ and in-situ characterization. It was found that, Co(OH)F@Al composites achieved main exothermal reaction before melting of Al regardless of morphology and equivalence ratio. This feature is attributed to the etching of Al 2 O 3 shell by HF released from Co(OH)F which is termed as pre-ignition reaction. To elucidate the effect of micro-structure on the actual specific heat release, we proposed a phenomenological model which can be a reference for future micro-structure design of MIC.

Protease-Loaded CuS Nanoparticles with Synergistic Photothermal/Dynamic Therapy against F. nucleatum-Induced Periodontitis

Pengyu Gao,Guotai Li,Zhiguo Wang,Hui Zhang,Yansheng Shan,Xin Yuan,Qiang Shi,Xue Dou,Qihui Zhou,Quanchen Xu

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease induced by a plaque biofilm, which can lead to the destruction of the periodontal support tissue and even teeth loss. The common strategies of periodontitis treatment are to eliminate bacterial/biofilm-related inflammation and subsequently inhibit alveolar bone resorption, for which antibiotic therapy is the most traditional one. However, impenetrable polymeric substances on bacterial biofilms make it difficult for traditional antimicrobial agents to take effect. In this study, a novel nanoparticle protease-loaded CuS NPs was developed, combining the advances of photodynamic and photothermal therapy from CuS and enzymatic degradation of the biofilm by a protease. The photothermal activity and the reactive oxygen generation capacity of the designed nanoparticles were verified by the experimental results, constituting the basis of antibacterial function. Next, the high antimicrobial activity of CuS@A NPs onFusobacterium nucleatumand its biofilm was demonstrated. The proper hemo/cytocompatibility of CuS-based NPs was demonstrated by in vitro assays. Last, effective treatment against periodontitis was achieved in a rat periodontitis model through the significant efficacy of inhibiting bone resorption and alleviating inflammation. Thus, the developed CuS@A NPs prove a promising material for the management of periodontitis.

F–53B induces hepatotoxic effects and slows self-healing in ulcerative colitis in mice

Caihong Wang,Zihong Pan,Yuanxiang Jin

Chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (F–53 B) is a distinct substitute for perfluorooctane sulphonate. It has been reported to be biologically toxic to mammals, causing enteric toxicity, liver toxicity and neurotoxicity. However, studies about the effects of F–53 B on patients with gastrointestinal diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease are very limited. In this study, whether the toxic impacts of F–53 B on the gut and liver can be exacerbated in mice with colitis was explored. The sensitivity of mice with acute colitis caused by dextran sulfate sodium salt (DSS) to F–53 B was compared with that of healthy mice. The mice were administered water containing F–53 B at doses of 10 and 100 μg/L sequentially for two weeks, respectively. F–53 B exposure exacerbated DSS-induced colonic inflammation, including inducing shortening of colon length, inflammatory cell infiltration and more severe histopathological symptoms. In addition, F–53 B administration significantly increased the levels of inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6 and tumour necrosis factor-α, in the plasma of mice with enteritis compared with control group. F–53 B impaired intestinal integrity of mice with colitis by downregulating Claudin-1 and antimicrobial peptide-related genes while elevating serum lipopolysaccharide levels. In addition, in mice with colitis, F–53 B increased the levels of serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase, resulted in more severe liver inflammation and increased the level of genes related to the Gasdermin D-mediated pyrolysis . Conclusively, our results indicated that F–53 B delayed the self-healing of ulcerative colitis (UC) and caused liver inflammation in mice. This study provided some new insights into the health risks of F–53 B and raises concerns about the health of individuals with UC.

A multiresponsive luminescent hydroxyl-functionalized MIL-53(Al) for detection of F− and water

Linli HOU,Li WANG,Yonghai SONG,Limin LIU

A luminescent hydroxyl-functionalized MIL-53(Al) (OH-MIL-53(Al)) was prepared by one-step solvent thermal method for multiresponsive fluorescence sensor. The OH-MIL-53(Al) exhibited uniform nanospheres with average diameter of 150±20 nm, flexible three-dimensional frameworks, and good dispersion in water. The OH-MIL-53(Al) emitted green fluorescence with a maximum wavelength of 515 nm which showed good fluorescence quenching response for sensing F − and fluorescence enhancement response for water, with good day-to-day stability. The mechanism was based on protonation/deprotonation of hydroxyl group located on OH-MIL-53(Al). Good linear relationship could be found between the luminescence intensity of 515 nm and F − concentrations in the range of 0–60 µM with a determination limit of 70 nM. At the concentrations from 0% to 100%, the fitting curve for water content was in good agreement with the linear equation, and the detection limit was 0.10%. OH-MIL-53(Al) demonstrated excellent fluorescence sensing performance, indicating that it could be used as a multiresponsive sensor to practical application.

Fluorine-functionalized Porous Organic Polymers for Durable F-gas Capture from Semiconductor Etching Exhaust

Wenxiang Zhang,Yue Wu,Yinhui Li,Shuhui Chen,Yu Fu,Zhonghui Zhang,Tong Yan,Shanshan Wang,Heping Ma

Efficiently capturing and recycling perfluorinated electron specialty gases (F-gases) with severe greenhouse effects (e.g., long atmospheric lifetime and high global warming potential) from etching exhaust is of great significance to the semiconductor industry. The adsorption separation technique based on a porous adsorbent is considered as an economical and effective method to remove the F-gases in the semiconductor exhaust, benefiting from its low energy consumption and high operational feasibility. Herein, two fluorinated microporous polymers (termed POPTrB-4F and POPTrB-8F) have been synthesized via direct C–H arylation polycondensation. Motivated by their fluorinated pore structure and sturdy covalent bond linkage mode, the separation performances of POPTrB-4F/8F for F-gases under both equilibrium and kinetic conditions were systematically studied. Both experimental results and theoretical calculations show that these two fluorinated polymers can selectively capture F-gases from the simulated etching exhaust. Impressively, the ideal adsorbed solution theory selectivity of POPTrB-4F and POPTrB-8F to SF6 reached 62.88 and 51.55, respectively, at 298.15 K and 1 bar. Moreover, the mechanisms of gas adsorption and separation in porous organic polymers have also been profoundly revealed through simulation calculations based on the density functional theory. These results suggest the possibility of exploiting these fluorinated microporous polymers for the separation of F-gases in an eco-friendly way.

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of refined F–T wax on GC–MS and GC

Songpeng Cheng,Liangcheng An,Zhenling Li,Suli Liu,Junmin Lv,Subing Fan,Tiansheng Zhao

The products with higher carbon numbers from Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis are very complex and hard to directly be analyzed on GC due to their very high boiling point. In this work, the qualitative and quantitative analytical method for refined F-T wax samples with C 7 to C 38 was established on GC–MS. All components were well separated, qualified and quantified. The analytical errors were less than ±2 % and the errors of recovery experiments were less than ±5 %. Thereafter, this method was successfully applied in GC analysis with errors less than ±0.75 % and the analytical method on GC was also built, which will provide a more convenience way in analysis of refined F-T wax samples. Based on the obtained analytical conditions and the relative calibration factors of paraffins, the qualitative and quantitative method for the cracking products from refined F-T wax was further built according to a similar method by using simulated samples with the conversion from 5 % to 80 %. The thermal cracking of F-T wax 5# was performed and the content of LAOs in liquid mixtures reached over 50 % at 650 °C. This study simplifies the previous analysis methods which can only be completed by using a variety of standard methods and provide convenience for analysis of refined F-T wax from coal-to-liquid plant.

Effect of Insulin Receptor on Juvenile Hormone Signal and Fecundity in Spodoptera litura (F.)

Xue Pan,Yanfang Pei,Cuici Zhang,Yaling Huang,Ling Chen,Liqiong Wei,Chuanren Li,Xiaolin Dong,Xiang Chen

Simple SummaryThe tobacco cutworm,Spodoptera litura(F.), exemplifies strong reproductive capacities and damages many agricultural crops. The insulin signaling pathway is known as a key determinant of female reproduction in insects. However, the detailed molecular mechanisms in these processes are poorly studied. Here, we injected bovine insulin into the newly emerged moth, resulting in gene expression changes in the insulin pathway, while knockdown ofSlInRcaused an inverse gene expression change involved in the insulin pathway. Further studies indicated that the content of JH-III, Vg, total proteins and triacylgycerol could be suppressed bySlInRdsRNA injection. Furthermore, stunted ovaries and lower fecundity were observed by RNAi. Our studies indicated that SlInR plays a key role in JH-III synthesis and the ovarian development inS. litura.AbstractInsulin signaling can regulate various physiological functions, such as energy metabolism and reproduction and so on, in many insects, including mosquito and locust. However, the molecular mechanism of this physiological process remains elusive. The tobacco cutworm,Spodoptera litura, is one of the most important pests of agricultural crops around the world. In this study, phosphoinositide 3-kinase (SlPI3K), protein kinase B (SlAKT), target of rapamycin (SlTOR), ribosomal protein S6 kinase (SlS6K) and transcription factor cAMP-response element binding protein (SlCREB) genes, except transcription factor forkhead box class O (SlFoxO), can be activated by bovine insulin injection. Then, we studied the influence of the insulin receptor gene (SlInR) on the reproduction ofS. liturausing RNA interference technology. qRT-PCR analysis revealed thatSlInRwas most abundant in the head. TheSlPI3K,SlAKT,SlTOR,SlS6KandSlCREBgenes were decreased, exceptSlFoxO,after theSlInRgene knockdown. Further studies revealed that the expression of vitellogenin mRNA and protein, Methoprene-tolerant gene (SlMet), could be down-regulated by the injection of dsRNA ofSlInRsignificantly. Furthermore, a depletion in the insulin receptor by RNAi significantly decreased the content of juvenile hormone III (JH-III), total proteins and triacylgycerol. These changes indicated that a lack ofSlInRcould impair ovarian development and decrease fecundity inS. litura. Our studies contribute to a comprehensive insight into reproduction, regulated by insulin and the juvenile hormone signaling pathway through nutrition, and a provide theoretical basis for the reproduction process in pest insects. Keywords:insulin pathway;juvenile hormone;reproduction;vitellogenin;nutrition

Fabrication of wool ball-like F-doped BiOCl0.4Br0.3I0.3 composite for effective sulfamethazine photocatalytic degradation

Ying Li,Jiahao Lai,Xiaoni Zheng,Siying Lv,Jing Yang,Shihai Cui

Novel material wool ball-like F-doped BiOCl 0.4 Br 0.3 I 0.3 has been successfully fabricated via a facile solvothermal method. In this work, the as-synthesized catalyst was characterized to examine the structure, morphology, optical and electrochemical properties. The catalyst was used in sulfamethazine degradation under visible-light irradiation. The optimized photocatalyst F-BiOCl 0.4 Br 0.3 I 0.3 (Bi:F = 3:2) exhibits superior activity and the degradation efficiency can reach 99.6 % in pH 6 within 60 min. There are two reasons to explain it: (i) The F-BiOCl 0.4 Br 0.3 I 0.3 has narrow band gap; (ii) Wool ball-like morphology can cause multiple reflections of the irradiated light, and availably prolong the action time. The primary oxidative species are holes and superoxide radicals. The possible degradation mechanism was discussed based on the experimental results.
