The determination of inorganic arsenic species in real samples can be particularly challenging due to their trace levels and the interferences arising from sample matrix. Normally, the speciation analysis necessitates chromatographic separation. Herein, we report a novel method for the ultrasensitive detection and non-chromatographic speciation of inorganic arsenic by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), utilizing CdS/MIL-100(Fe) composites as an adsorbent and photocatalyst. The synthesized CdS/MIL-100(Fe) could completely adsorb As(V) and As(III) within 5 and 105 min, respectively. Following filtration and re-suspension in formic acid, the adsorbed As(III)/As(V) were reduced to arsine (AsH 3 ) under UV irradiation and swept to ICP-MS for detection. The limits of detection were found to be 1.7 ng L −1 (without preconcentration) and 0.11 ng L −1 (after 20-fold preconcentration). The method was successfully applied to the determination of trace inorganic arsenic in various food and water samples.

s Green rust (GR), a reductive iron-based mineral pivotal in soil and groundwater remediation, remains unexplored for wastewater treatment. This study reveals that high-pH-Fe(II) coagulation enables in-situ generation of stabilized GR, thereby enhancing the coagulation efficiency (> 90 % removal for diverse dyes). The formation mechanism includes three sequential stages: Initially, alkaline conditions facilitate abundant Fe(OH) 2 ; Subsequently, partial oxidation of Fe(II) by oxidants produces anoxic zones, where Fe(II)/Fe(III) co-precipitation initiates GR crystallization; Simultaneously, multivalent anions intercalate into GR interlayers, further enhancing GR stability through strong electrostatic interactions. GR-enhanced-Fe(II) coagulation demonstrates dual dyes removal mechanisms: direct reductive degradation of electrophilic moieties (e.g., azo bond) and adsorption-coprecipitation of macromolecules. Based on the mechanism insights, it is found that GR-enhanced-Fe(II) coagulation achieves unparalleled removal of both anionic and cationic dyes (nearly 100 % decolorization for 50 mg/L dye solutions) under anoxic conditions. HPLC-MS and DFT confirm GR-driven reductive cleavage of Reactive Red 2 into low-molecular-weight byproducts. Pilot and full-scale trials at a dyeing wastewater treatment plant concluded that GR-enhanced-Fe(II) coagulation achieves 53.5 % COD removal, outperforming conventional Fe(II) processes (46.5 %) under actual hydraulic and pollutant load fluctuations. This work expands coagulation theory and offers a cost-effective strategy for wastewater treatment, adaptable to diverse effluents while retaining operational simplicity.

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) plays a crucial role in key processes of fuel cells and zinc-air batteries. To enable commercialization, reducing the platinum (Pt) content and increasing the specific activity per unit mass is essential. A promising approach involves synthesizing of Fe-N-C precursors via the polyaniline (PANI) pathway, which ensures a uniform distribution of Fe-N-C species and facilitates the subsequent adsorption of platinum ions. This leads to the formation of Pt-Fe bimetallic alloys. The synergistic interaction between Pt and Fe-N-C sites promotes the homogeneous dispersion of Pt and the formation of smaller particle sizes, which in turn enhances intrinsic activity and stability of the catalyst. Notably, the Pt/Fe-N-C catalyst, featuring an ultra-low Pt loading of just 1.79 wt%, exhibits a remarkable doubling of mass activity compared to conventional catalysts. Moreover, zinc-air batteries using this catalyst achieve an impressive peak power density of 200 mW/cm 2 .

Aqueous Fe(II)-catalyzed activation commonly deteriorates the oxidation performance of persulfate (PS) to the treatment of organic contaminants. In this study, a PS-doped layered bimetallic hydroxide (Fe–Mn hydroxide) was synthesized to construct a heterogeneously catalytic system to solve the issue brought by homogeneity. The molar ratio of Fe(II) to Mn(II) and the mass ratio of PS to Fe–Mn hydroxide both had a significant impact on the catalytic degradation of p-CP. Reaction temperatures engaged in the most essential role in influencing the degradation and removal of p-chlorophenol (p-CP). The optimal combination of factors for the preparation of PS-hydroxide and the treatment of p-CP was finally determined by significance analysis. The degradation process was appropriately fitted by the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The benzene ring in p-CP was broken by PS-hydroxide during the adsorption. The surface modification of PS-hydroxide caused by the valence transition of Mn was beneficial to the adsorption and catalytic degradation of p-CP.

The Fe(III)-doped BiOCl catalyst was successfully prepared via a one-step solution combustion synthesis (SCS), and they were characterized by XRD, FESEM, HRTEM, XPS, PL and DRS analysis. With the doping of Fe(III), the SCS catalysts become finer and more uniform, and show narrowed bandgap, which makes the Fe(III)-BiOCl can be excited to form photogenerated electrons and holes under visible light irritation and improve the photocatalytic performance. Compared with the SCS BiOCl, the FB1-2 sample exhibits doubled surface area (9.62 m 2 /g), narrowed bandgap (1.35 eV) and quadrupling degrading efficiency for Rhodamine B (RhB) (93% at 60 min). In addition, through the capturing of free radicals, the photocatalytic degradation mechanism of RhB was proposed, in which the active substances ∙O 2 − and h + played a leading role in the degradation process. Owing to the novel one-step combustion process and resulting in excellent photocatalytic performance, the Fe(III) doping BiOCl is demonstrated as a prospective catalyst for degrading dye pollutants.

A series of composites based on Fe-based MOF (Fe-BDC) and CdSe quantum dots (CdSe QDs) have been synthesized with CdSe QDs well-embedded into Fe-BDC particles, which are characterized by XRD , SEM, TEM, ICP-OES, FT-IR, N 2 physical sorption , UV–visible DRS , PL and electrochemical measurements. By detecting the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation, the photocatalytic performance of CdSe@Fe-BDC nanocomposites were apparently improved by 5.8 times relative to single Fe-BDC, which can be attributed to the heterostructure formed in CdSe@Fe-BDC. Owing to the perfect interfacial contact, this promotes electron transfer from CdSe to Fe-BDC and significantly facilitates the separation of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The photocatalytic mechanism studied by adding sacrificial agents revealed that the predominant active species in the system is hole cation (h + ) and oxygen free radicals (•O 2 − ).

Surfactants are known to enhance the degradation of halogenated organics by nanoscale zerovalent iron (n-ZVI) or n-ZVI-based bimetallic particles, but the mechanism of the promotion is not well understood. In this study, we used nanoscale Ag/Fe particles (n-Ag/Fe) to degrade 2,2′,4,4′-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) in different surfactant solutions. The results show that the nonionic surfactant TX-100 had the best promoting effect, which might be attributed to the decrease in particle agglomeration and improvement of mass transfer efficiency after the adsorption of TX-100 on n-Ag/Fe. The distribution analysis of BDE-47 in solid and liquid phases indicates that when the concentration of TX-100 in aqueous solution was above critical micelle concentration, BDE-47 started to dissolve in the liquid phase. Thus, TX-100 micelles can enhance the mass transfer efficiency of BDE-47. However, a too high concentration of TX-100 (above 1.0 mM) would influence the promotion effect of BDE-47 degration, which might be attributed to the excessive and thicker micelles of TX-100 hindering the contact between BDE-47 and n-Ag/Fe. We also studied the degradation pathway of BDE-47 and its products, and found that surfactants did not change the degradation pathway of BDE-47.

Chlorinated aromatic chemicals are highly hazardous, transmissible, and bioaccumulative. Developing an economically feasible catalytic method to facilitate the effective removal of chlorinated aromatic pollutants is critical for contamination prevention. The current study extensively investigated the utilization of organic ligands such as citrate (CA) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to increase Fe(II)-activated persulfate (PS) for 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) and 3-chlorobenzoic acid (3-CB) degradation in water. The decomposition and consumption ability of persulfate in PS alone and Fe(II)/PS systems for 4-CP and 3-CB was very low because of the rapid utilization as well as discontinuous availability of Fe(II), which indicates the decline of Fe(III) to Fe(II). But, when using the citrate/Fe(II)/PS and EDTA/Fe(II)/PS combinations, the degradation of 4-CP and 3-CB was 78.86%, 75.01% and 84.84%, 80.99% within 30 min, respectively. The significant enhancement is due to both ligand-to-metal transfer of charges process, and this increased the process of rate determination through carrying electrons into the citrate and EDTA ligands to Fe(III), generating Fe(II). In addition, the 4-CP and 3-CB degradation facilitated with citrate/Fe(II)/PS and EDTA/Fe(II)/PS systems was efficiently degraded at acidic pH (2.0–6.0) conditions. The pseudo-first-order kinetics model accurately predicted 4-CP and 3-CB degradation in the organic ligand/Fe(II)/PS systems. The degradation percentage of 4-CP and 3-CB increased with increasing PS and Fe(II) concentrations. Moreover, both sulfate and hydroxyl radicals formed by citrate/Fe(II)/PS and EDTA/Fe(II)/PS systems were identified as major reactive oxygen species for 4-CP and 3-CB decomposition. The present investigation recommends an alternate strategy to enhance the Fe(II)-activated persulfate mechanisms.

Due to strong activity, it is very difficult to remove low concentrations of bromide in medical wastewater by traditional method, thus highly effective and greener adsorbents should be utilized to design. In this work, the cellulose beads (CBs) were modified by the TEMPO-mediated oxidation and then bonded with Fe 3+ to fabricate Fe(III)-complexed carboxylated cellulose beads (Fe-CCBs) adsorbents. Structure and properties of Fe-CCBs were analyzed using Energy dispersive spectrum (EDS), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR), total acidity and basicity groups, X-ray diffraction (XRD), N 2 adsorption-desorption and Thermogravimetric (TGA). Moreover, batch adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption of Br − was better consistent with general-order kinetic model and Liu isotherm model, which could also further clarify the adsorption process mechanism. Meanwhile, the results revealed that removal of Br- was a spontaneous exothermic process and was more suitable to be carried out under neutral or acidic conditions. Furthermore, the mechanism of adsorption behavior of bromide ions on Fe-CCBs was based on a combination of electrostatic attraction and outer-sphere complexation. The results of this study can provide guidance for the design of novel material adsorbents and the removal of harmful anions from aqueous solutions.

In this study, a novel Fe–Mn–Ce oxide-modified biochar composite (FMCBC) was synthesized via pyrolysis to enhance the adsorption capacity of biochar (BC). Scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed that Fe, Mn, and Ce were successfully loaded onto the surface of the BC. A series of adsorption experiments showed that the FMCBC exhibited improved adsorption of As(III) in an aqueous environment. The adsorption process was well expressed by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption capacity of FMCBC reached 8.74 mg L −1 , which was 3.27 times greater than that of BC. The pH of the solution significantly influenced the adsorption of As(III), where the amount of As(III) adsorbed by FMCBC was maximized at pH 3. A high phosphate concentration inhibited adsorption, whereas nitrate and sulfate ions promoted As(III) adsorption and increased the FMCBC adsorption capacity. Similarly, with increasing humic acid concentration, the adsorption capacity of FMCBC for As(III) decreased; however, a low concentration of humic acid promoted adsorption. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that the adsorption of As(III) by FMCBC occurred through redox and surface complexation reactions. Therefore, FMCBC has excellent potential for purifying arsenic-contaminated water.

The performance of trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation by sodium percarbonate (SPC) activated with Fe(II) in the presence of 3.0 g/L sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as well as the role of SDS in the SPC/Fe(II) system was investigated since SDS is a common surfactant used in groundwater remediation for improving TCE dissolution to the aqueous phase. The results showed that though the introduction of SDS could inhibit the TCE degradation, the inhibiting effect was less with the increasing SDS dose. In the presence of SDS, TCE could be completely removed with the SPC/Fe(II)/TCE molar ratio of 40/80/1. Experiments with free radical probe compounds and radical scavengers elucidated that TCE was mainly oxidized by both HO· and . A weakly acidic environment was more favorable to TCE degradation. Nevertheless, at a high concentration had a strongly inhibitive effect on the TCE degradation but the influence of Cl − was negligible. Finally, the excellent TCE degradation achieved in actual groundwater demonstrated that Fe(II) activated SPC technique was applicable in the remediation of TCE contaminated groundwater in the presence of SDS. Practitioner points The effects of SDS were evaluated SPC/Fe(II)/SDS system applied to remediate TCE The mechanism of HO· and generation had been investigated Cl − and affected TCE degradation at different levels The performance of TCE removal in actual groundwater had been studied

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has shown to be a promising photocatalyst that, however, suffers from strong charge recombination and poor conductivity, while MXenes have shown to be perfect cocatalysts for the photocatalytic process but show poor stability. In this study, we successfully constructed 2D/2D heterojunctions of Fe-C3N4/Ti3C2 for the photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics. In this study, multilayer Ti3C2 was obtained by etching Ti3AlC2, and then Fe-C3N4/Ti3C2 photocatalyst was prepared by the one-pot microwave method and high-temperature calcination method. The synthesized samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, TGA, BET, DRS, PL, and other means. The photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride by Fe-C3N4/Ti3C2 was in accordance with the first-order reaction kinetics model, and the apparent rate constant k was 2.83, 2.06, and 1.77 times that of g-C3N4, Fe-C3N4, and g-C3N4/Ti3C2, respectively. Through the mechanism study, it was shown that the most active species in the reaction system was • O2−, while h+ and •OH had a relatively lower effect on the degradation system.
