(1- x )Ba 0.65 Bi 0.07 Sr 0.245 TiO 3 - x R 2 O 3 (BBST- x R) ceramics embellished by lanthanides (La, Yb, Gd) were synthesized in this study, and the effects in properties were ascertained. The results show that lanthanides with smaller ionic radius differences and larger relative mass will effectively limit mass transport of other cations and restrain grain growth. It is also found that the paraelectric phase of ceramics can be stabilized by decreasing the ionic radius of lanthanides. In particular, the addition of La unfolds the exceptional recoverable storage density ( W rec ) up to 2.23 J/cm 3 and efficiency ( η ) of ∼76.7% under 280 kV/cm. Finite element simulation and PFM observation also further explain the reasons for the excellent performance. Concurrently, BBST-0.015La ceramic exhibits outstanding thermostability from 30 °C to 150 °C and frequency stabilization from 1 Hz to 300 Hz which indicates the potentiality of application in actual surroundings.

Rare-earth (RE) oxide-doped La 2 (Zr 0.7 Ce 0.3 ) 2 O 7 (LZC) has attracted great interest in thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) because of its lower thermal conductivity . However, studies on the laws governing the effect of different types of RE oxide doping on the performance of LZC ceramics are limited. Therefore, in this study, different types of RE (Sc, Y, Gd and Eu) doped LZC ceramic bulks have been prepared using solid phase reaction method. The effects of RE doping on the crystal structure, mechanical properties and thermal properties of the LZC ceramics were investigated. The results indicated that all five ceramics exhibited a single pyrochlore phase structure, whereas their lattice constants were reduced after doping, with (La 0.85 Sc 0.15 ) 2 (Zr 0.7 Ce 0.3 ) 2 O 7 having the lowest lattice constant. The effect of rare earth doping on the grain growth of LZC was not evident; however, it could significantly improve the hardness of LZC. In addition, doping with all four RE ions significantly reduced the thermal conductivity of the LZC ceramics, and the most significant reduction was observed for Gd 3+ doping.

Background The tumor-specific immune responses, essential for removing residual lesions and preventing tumor metastases, can be stimulated by tumor-associated antigens (TAAs) released following photothermal therapy (PTT). However, due to the immunosuppressed microenvironment of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), the TAAs released by PTT are difficult to induce an effective immune response. In this work, we prepared the mesoporous silica (mSiO 2 ) coated black titanium dioxide (bTiO 2 ) photothermal nanoparticles (NPs) for enhanced photothermal-immunotherapy toward PDAC, in which resiquimod (R848) was loaded and DOTA-Gd was conjugated. The NPs are specified as bTiO 2 @mSiO 2 @Gd/R848 and abbreviated to NPs/R848. R848 as a kind of Toll-like receptor 7/8 agonist can remodel the tumor microenvironment (TME) in PDAC and induce a strong immune response. Furthermore, DOTA-Gd serves as a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent to improve the T 1 -weighted MRI performance of the NPs. Results In vitro results of this study show that NPs/R848 could thermally ablate tumor cells and efficiently trigger dendritic cell (DC) maturation. The results of in vivo investigations demonstrate that the combined use of photothermal-immunotherapy exhibits a significant inhibitory effect on tumor growth. Besides, it promoted maturation of DCs and enhanced infiltration of CD8 + , CD4 + T cells to improve the TME in PDAC. Conclusions Our study anticipates that by encouraging the maturation of DCs, this strategy will improve the TME and enable the successful photothermal-immunotherapy of PDAC.

Bioactive metal–organic frameworks (bio-MOFs) built from biofunctional metal ions and linkers show a new strategy to construct multifunctional theranostic platforms. Herein, a bio-MOF is synthetized via the self-assembling of Fe 3+ ions and doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) molecules. Then, through a stepwise assembly strategy, another bio-MOFs structure consisting of Gd 3+ ions and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H 3 BTC) is wrapped on the surfaces of Fe-DOX nanoparticles, followed by adsorbing photosensitizer indocyanine green (ICG). Specifically, the Gd-MOF shell structure can not only act as a contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), but also provides protection for Fe-DOX cores, controlling the release of DOX. The photoacoustic and photothermal imaging (PAI and PTI) methods are successfully introduced to the platform by loading ICG, providing potential applications for multimodal biological imaging. The in vitro and in vivo outcomes indicate that the Fe-DOX@Gd-MOF-ICG nanoplatform exhibits outstanding synergistic antitumor performance via MR/PA/PT imaging guided chemotherapy, photothermal and photodynamic combination therapy. The work may encourage further exploration of bio-MOFs based multifunctional theranostic platforms for multimodal imaging guided compound antitumor therapy, which will open an avenue of MOFs toward biological applications.

Dual-modal imaging by combining magnetic resonance (MR) and near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence can integrate the advantages of high-resolution anatomical imaging with high sensitivity in vivo fluorescent imaging, which is expected to play a significant role in biomedical researches. Here we report a dual-modality imaging probe (NIR/MR-MSNs) fabricated by conjugating NIR fluorescent heptamethine dyes (IR-808) and MR contrast agents (Gd-DTPA) within highly aminated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs-NH2). The dual-modality imaging probes NIR/MR-MSNs possess a size of ca. 120 nm. The NIR/MR-MSNs show not only near-infrared fluorescence imaging property with an emission peak at 794 nm, but also highly MR relaxivity of 14.54 mM−1 s−1, which is three times more than Gd-DTPA. In vitro experiment reveals high uptake and retention abilities of the nanoprobes, while cell viability assay demonstrates excellent cytocompatibility of the dual-modality imaging probe. After intratumor injection with the NIR/MR-MSNs, MR imaging shows clear anatomical border of the enhanced tumor region while NIR fluorescence exhibits high sensitive tumor detection ability. These intriguing features suggest that this newly developed dual-modality imaging probes have great potential in biomedical imaging.

As the effective photothermal agent, NIR cyanine dye has shown great promise in cancer therapy due to its distinct NIR absorbance and excellent thermal conversion superiority. Up to date, various nanosystems have been developed as the delivery carrier for NIR dye in order to overcome the inherent issues such as poor stability, low bioavailability and insufficient therapy efficacy. However, the huge obstacle of current nanocarriers for NIR dye encapsulation frequently lies in high leakage risk, complicated preparation and poor biocompatibility, which significantly hinder their further application in cancer therapy. To make up for these deficiencies, we developed a facile and universal strategy to fabricate a novel nanoscale coordination polymers (NCPs) through the co-coordination driven assembly of cypate and carboxyl ligand with Gd 3+ . Through this design, cypate can be effectively introduced into the interior of NCPs through the coordination between its carboxyl group and Gd 3+ , resulting in the enhanced stability, reduced leakage risk, and improved therapeutic efficacy. The fabricated NCPs have exhibited multimodal imaging guided tumor targeting chemo-photothermal property. After accumulation in tumor site, rapid drug release can be effectively triggered by NIR laser induced hyperthermia and acidic endo/lysosomal microenvironment, which fundamentally improved the synergistic chemo-photothermal efficacy for tumor killing. The newly fabricated NCP system can exert distinctively chemo-photothermal synergistic efficacy for cancer therapy and will pave a new avenue for the application of NCPs in biomedical field.

In order to further enrich the research on the synthesis of complexes with polycarboxylic acid ligands and rare earth metal ion. In this study, four rare earth complexes, namely, [Gd(cpia)] n ( 1 ), [Er(cpia)] n ( 2 ), [Pr(cpna) 2 ·2H 2 O] n ( 3 ) and [Gd(Hcpna)(cpna)•3H 2 O] n ( 4 ) have been synthesized by solvothermal method based on 5-(2-carboxyphenoxy)isophthalic acid (H 3 cpia) and 5-(4-carboxyphenoxy)nicotinic acid ligand (H 2 cpna) with rare earth metal ions Pr 3+ , Gd 3+ and Er 3+ . Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that complexes 1 , 2 and 3 are two-dimensional network structure, 4 is one-dimensional chain structures. The fluorescence test results show that the fluorescence intensity of complexes 1 and 2 were lower than that of the H 3 cpia ligand, the fluorescence intensity of complexes 3 and 4 were lower than that of the H 2 cpna ligand. Magnetic results indicate complex 1 has ferromagentic behavior and weak antiferromagentic behavior in the complexes 2, 3 and 4 .

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were co-doped with Gd3+ and Al3+ and then loaded with Ru(bpy)32+ by ion-exchange to prepare Ru/Gd–Al@MSNs. The as-prepared Ru/Gd–Al@MSNs were applied as contrast agents for in vivo fluorescence and magnetic resonance (MR) dual-modality imaging with a mouse as a model. The effects of Al3+ and MSNs on longitudinal relaxivity (r1) and fluorescence were investigated using a series of Gd-containing silica nanoparticles, including Gd@MSNs, Gd–Al@MSNs, and Ru/Gd–Al@nonporous silica nanoparticles. Co-doping with Al3+ improved the loading of Gd3+; the mesoporous structure improved the water exchange rate. The improvement enhanced the MR imaging efficiency of the Ru/Gd–Al@MSN probe. A higher relaxivity (19.2 mM−1 s−1) was observed compared to that from a commercial contrast agent, Gd-diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (Gd-DTPA). Importantly, the mesoporous structure provided a large specific surface area for the loading of Ru(bpy)32+ by a simple ion-exchange procedure. Intense red fluorescence was observed from Ru/Gd–Al@MSN probes. The versatility of Ru/Gd–Al@MSNs for dual-modality imaging was demonstrated using in vivo fluorescence imaging and T1-weighted MR imaging with a mouse model. The nanoparticles are biocompatible and may be attractive for clinical applications.

This study demonstrates a tripartite strategy to significantly enhance the piezo-photocatalytic degradation of ofloxacin (OFL) using modified BTO@BGFZ9 composite nanoparticles. Gd/Zr codoping optimizes the band structure and ferroelectricity of BFO, while heterojunction construction with BTO promotes interfacial charge separation. Corona poling treatment further aligns ferroelectric domains to amplify the piezoelectric field. The optimized 0.4BTO@BGFZ9 composite achieved 88.96% OFL degradation within 120 min under ultrasonic and visible-light synergy with a first-order rate constant of 0.0175 min–1. Mechanistic studies reveal that VO and a type-II heterojunction facilitate the generation of dominant reactive species (•O2– and h+), enabling efficient OFL mineralization via piperazine ring cleavage and defluorination.

Virus-mimetic hollow Gd-Fe nanocarriers enable co-delivery of cisplatin and TGF-βRI inhibitor for synergistic chemo-ferroptosis therapy. • The nanoparticle trigger iron-dependent cell death while blocking TGF-β signaling, synergistically suppressing tumor growth. • The nanoparticle overcomes resistance to immune checkpoint therapy by shifting the tumor microenvironment toward an immune-active state. Ovarian carcinoma remains poorly responsive to immune checkpoint blockade, partly because of a TGF-β-enriched and immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Here, we developed a virus-mimetic hollow Gd-Fe nanocarrier for the co-delivery of cisplatin (DDP) and the TGF-β receptor I inhibitor TGFβRI-IN-3 (IN-3), aiming to integrate chemotherapy, ferroptosis induction, and TGF-β pathway blockade into a single therapeutic platform. DDP/IN-3@Gd-Fe nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared using a hard-template strategy. Cellular uptake, cytotoxicity, apoptosis, and ferroptosis-associated biochemical changes were evaluated in SKOV3 cells. In tumor-bearing mice, biodistribution, T1-weighted MRI contrast, biosafety, and antitumor efficacy were further investigated. The prepared NPs exhibited uniform size, good stability, and high drug loading with sustained release. In vitro , DDP/IN-3@Gd-Fe NPs were effectively internalized by SKOV3 cells and demonstrated superior cytotoxicity, apoptosis induction, and ferroptosis promotion compared to free drugs. In vivo , DDP/IN-3@Gd-Fe NPs exhibited the strongest tumor growth inhibition, involving synergistic induction of apoptosis and ferroptosis and effective suppression of the TGF-β signaling pathway. Finally, DDP/IN-3@Gd-Fe NPs were found to remodel the immunosuppressive TME by increasing inflammatory mediators and promoting tumor infiltration of cytotoxic T cells and dendritic cells. In conclusion, DDP/IN-3@Gd-Fe NPs provide an MRI-traceable chemo-ferroptosis platform that may attenuate TGF-β-associated immunosuppression and improve checkpoint blockade responses in ovarian carcinoma. As an important branch of lanthanide-based complexes, clusters show unique properties in magnetocaloric effect (MCE) and single-molecule magnets (SMMs) using O/N ligands, while research on heavy p-block elements (e.g., S atom) with larger atomic radii and more diffuse p valence orbitals as coordinating atoms remains relatively scarce. Herein, using the sulfur-containing ligand of 2-pyridinethiol 1-oxide (HL), we successfully synthesized a series of hourglass-like Ln9clusters [Ln9(L)17(μ3-OH)9(μ4-OH)]·nH2O (1: Ln = Gd,n= 3;2: Ln = Tb,n= 3;3: Ln = Dy,n= 1). Magnetic data analysis reveals that cluster1shows a significant MCE, with the entropy change (−ΔSm) reaching a maximum of 34.41 J kg−1K−1at 2 K under ΔH= 7 T. Cluster3, meanwhile, exhibits distinct frequency- and temperature-dependent behavior, indicating its SMM characteristics. Interestingly, despite possessing the highest molar mass among reported Gd9clusters with MCE,1exhibits a competitive −ΔSmvalue, highlighting the critical role of sulfur-containing ligand on the structure and even exchange interactions. This work offers new insights into synthesizing high-performance MCE materials and understanding magneto-structural relationships.

The synthesis of novel two-dimensional (2D) triangular frustrated compounds are important for providing various platforms to investigate exotic quantum magnetism. Here, we successfully synthesised a series of RE-based magnetic compounds Ba3BiPbREO(BO3)4 (RE = Pr, Nd, Gd, Dy) with a geometrically-perfect 2D triangular lattice directed by triangular BO3 unit. These compounds stabilise 2D layered structures in the hexagonal (P63/mmc) crystal system, where magnetic ions are linked by BO3 to form a perfect triangular frustrated lattice. The magnetisation susceptibility results show that all synthesised compounds Ba3BiPbREO(BO3)4 exhibit dominant antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions, with no long-range order (LRO) down to 2 K, which is further confirmed by specific heat measurements. Additionally, their thermal stability, attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) and Ultraviolet−visible-near-infrared (UV−Vis−NIR) diffuse reflectance spectra are also reported. This work provides a series of RE-based magnetic compounds with a two-dimensional triangular frustrated lattice, offering novel model materials for further investigation on rare-earth-based frustrated magnetism.
