DMS gradient improves micropore access and O₂ transport, reducing flooding. • CB-DV06 yields 750 mg L −1 H₂O₂ at >60% Electro-Fenton efficiency. • DMS-modified GDEs remove 85% RBB and reduce TOC 60% in 120 min. • Surface area reaches 222.9 m 2 /g; electroactive sites increase sixfold. • Dual-phase oxygen diffusion boosts ORR kinetics and degradation rate. Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) electrosynthesis via the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e − ORR) is critically dependent on the formation of stable and well-regulated triple-phase interfaces (TPIs), where gas, liquid, and catalyst converge. However, micropore flooding and uneven wettability in carbon-black gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) often hinder oxygen transport and deactivate active sites. In this work, we address these challenges by introducing a dimethyl silicone oil (DMS) volume-gradient strategy to engineer confined TPIs within the carbon catalyst layer. Carbon-black GDEs were prepared using DMS volume-controlled of 0.4, 0.6, and 1.2 mL, with CB-DV06 identified as the optimum configuration. This design balances hydrophobicity and pore accessibility, promoting sustained oxygen diffusion and suppressing water blockage without impeding electron or ion transport. The optimized GDE (CB-DV06) achieved ~750 mg L −1 H₂O₂ after 180 min with current efficiencies exceeding 60% and enhanced electrochemically active surface area. To demonstrate the practical applicability of the in situ generated H₂O₂, Reactive Black B (RBB) degradation was employed as a model pollutant-removal reaction. The integrated system achieved approximately 85% RBB decolourisation, demonstrating the applicability of this interface-engineering strategy for pollutant-removal applications. Overall, this study highlights a low-impact approach for optimizing oxygen reduction environments in porous electrodes, advancing sustainable oxidant generation and environmental remediation. Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is a promising strategy for upgrading phenolic bio-oil into cycloalkanes. Conventional catalysts often rely on strongly acidic supports, which tend to suffer from rapid deactivation. In this study, 4-ethylphenol was selected as a model compound derived from lignin bio-oil to investigate the effects of active sites on an inert support during the hydrogenation and deoxygenation of the phenolic group. Acid-site–support decoupling catalysts, denoted as Ni-HSiW/h-BN, were successfully prepared and were applied in the HDO of 4-ethylphenol to produce ethylcyclohexane. Using 0.5 g of 4-ethylphenol as the substrate and n-dodecane (30 mL) as solvent, the optimal reaction conditions were identified as a temperature of 300 °C, a reaction time of 3 h and the use of 15% Ni-HSiW 0.25 /h-BN catalyst. Under these conditions, complete conversion of 4-ethylphenol was achieved with 100% selectivity toward ethylcyclohexane. When the temperature was lowered to 180 °C and the reaction time reduced to 1 h using 15% Ni/h-BN, the main product shifted to ethylcyclohexanol with a selectivity of 94.4%. A reaction mechanism was proposed, indicating that the combination of Ni and HSiW synergistically enhances HDO efficiency.

This study is to explore the micro-mechanical properties of C–S–H modified by various carbon nanotubes and the correlation with the nano/micro-structures. The results show that carboxyl-functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes provide the great template for the growth of C–S–H and reduce the porosity and surface defects of C–S–H particles. The highly ordered and dense layered structure of C–S–H greatly improves its micro-mechanical properties. In addition, the functional groups (–COOH) of functionalized carbon nanotubes can combine with the Ca–O bond of C–S–H to change the interlayer spacing of C–S–H, and the effects are particularly significant at low Ca/Si. Nano-filler reinforced polymer-based composites have attracted extensive attention in tribology; however, to date, it is still challenging to construct a favorable lubricating system with excellent compatibility, lubricity and durability using nano-filler reinforced polymer-based composites. Herein, sulfonated boron nitride nano-sheets (h-BN@PSDA) are prepared and used as nano-fillers for epoxy resins (EPs), to improve friction and wear along with thermal conductivity. Furthermore, inspired by the lubricating principle and structure of snail mucus, a solvent-free carbon dot-based nanofluid (F-CDs) is fabricated and used for the first time as the lubricant for h-BN@PSDA/EPs. Both poly (4-styrene sulfonate) and polyether amine grafted on the surface of F-CDs contribute to branched structures and multiple interfacial absorption effects. Extraordinarily low friction and wear are detected after long-term sliding. The average coefficient of friction and wear rate of h-BN@PSDA/EPs composites are reduced by 95.25% and 99.42% respectively, in the presence of the F-CD nanofluid, compared to that of EPs. Besides, the added h-BN nano-sheets increase the thermal conductivity (TC) of EPs from 0.178 to 0.194 W (m−1 K−1). The distinguished lubrication performances are likely due to the formation of a hybrid nanostructure of 0D F-CDs and 2D h-BN@PSDA together with the “rolling–sliding” and “self-mending” effects of added F-CDs.

Calcium silicate hydrates (C–S–H) is the primary product of cement hydration, and its structure and properties substantially influence the mechanical performance of cement-based materials. However, in practical applications, pure C–S–H has some shortcomings, such as susceptibility to microcracking and high porosity, which can reduce the durability and overall mechanical performance. To solve these problems, two different sizes of cellulose (microcrystalline cellulose nanoparticles and carboxylated cellulose nanofibers) were used to modify C–S–H nanocomposites, which were synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis. The characterization of the composites was analyzed in detail using methods such as TEM, FT-IR, and TGA. The results of these methods showed that cellulose was uniformly dispersed in the C–S–H matrix on the nanoscale, which formed an interwoven mesh structure. The mechanical properties of the cement paste were tested, including flexural strength and compressive strength. In addition, the cement paste containing the nanocomposites was analyzed by SEM, XRD and hydration heat tests. The results of these tests showed that the seed effect of C–S–H and the effective bridging effect of needle-like cellulose crystals on crack extension significantly improved their mechanical properties.

The practical use of Fenton process has been thus far limited by the harsh pH and accumulation of iron-rich sludge, while these two shortcomings will be tackled hopefully via developing non-metallic-catalyzed green Fenton-like approach. Herein, we investigate in-situ the dynamic evolution of electrode surface atomic hydrogen (H*) and H* mediated pH-independent and residue-free electro-Fenton process via operando electrochemical investigation and visualization techniques. The H* generated on the surface of palladium-coated electrode enables effective activation of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) to generate hydroxyl radical ( OH) for efficient bisphenol A degradation (>99%), validated by in-situ cyclic voltammetry and electron spin resonance. Meanwhile, in-situ Raman spectra confirms that H 2 O 2 is activated through a transition state of *H 3 O 2 adduct with a low reaction energy barrier of 0.51 eV, whereby the lone electron in H* can readily cleave peroxide bond to produce OH and H 2 O as the only products ( ΔG = −1.03 eV). More importantly, the electron-driven H* production is independent of the solution pH as both H + and H 2 O can act as precursors verified by in-situ fluorescence analyses, so that the H 2 O 2 activation mediated by H* extends successfully to a wider pH range (3–10). Our research provides a promising path toward eliminating restrictions of traditional Fenton process and paves the way simultaneously for in-situ investigation into reaction mechanism of such electrochemical processes.

Polyimide (PI)-based tribological composites containing carbon fiber (CF), molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), and other solid lubricants have been extensively studied. However, the role of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) in regulating interfacial interactions and wear mechanisms in PI/CF/MoS 2 systems remains insufficiently understood. In this study, the effects of h-BN incorporation on the mechanical and tribological behaviors of PI/CF/MoS 2 composites were systematically investigated through experimental characterization combined with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results revealed that h-BN addition improved hardness while reducing tensile strength and ductility due to the enhanced interfacial restriction and increased stress concentration. The tribological performance exhibited a non-monotonic dependence on h-BN content, with the optimal performance achieved at 5 wt.% h-BN. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analyses suggested that an appropriate h-BN content facilitated the formation of a relatively continuous transfer film, whereas excessive h-BN promoted filler agglomeration and interfacial degradation, leading to accelerated wear. Furthermore, MD simulations suggested that the reduced molecular mobility and fractional free volume at the optimal h-BN content were consistent with enhanced interfacial stability. The combined experimental and simulation results provide qualitative insights into the role of h-BN in regulating filler dispersion, interfacial interactions, and molecular chain dynamics. These findings establish a structure–property relationship for designing high-performance multi-filler PI-based tribological composites. Highlights Hexagonal boron nitride improves the hardness but reduces tensile strength. Friction and wear are minimized at 5 wt.% hexagonal boron nitride loading. Excess hexagonal boron nitride triggers agglomeration and abrasive wear. Molecular dynamics simulations corroborate experimental wear mechanisms.

To improve phase-change behavior and thermal conductivity of the PEG-based polymeric SSPCMs, a series of SSPCMs with double cross-linking networks were constructed by introducing GO and hydroxylated h-BN into the polymer molecular chains of PEG-based SSPCMs through grafted polymerization and self-assembly. GO was the main hard supporting skeleton for the PEG segment, and h-BN as 2D thermal enhanced cells continuously was linked on the GO nano-sheets, forming into double cross-linking networks with PEG segments, which has good structural stability and regularity. Thus, the SSPCMs possessed good phase-change properties, excellent thermal reliability, and high thermal conductivity. Microscopies confirmed the successfully constructed chemical structure of the SSPCMs. Energy-storage capacities of the SSPCMs could reach 149.62 J/g, which displayed no obvious change after 100 thermal cycles, suggesting a good thermal cycling stability. Moreover, thermal conductivity of the prepared SSPCMs was enhanced by 71% compared with pure PEG, showing a good heat transfer efficiency. Therefore, this study represents a creative strategy towards the development of SSPCMs for thermal energy storage and thermal management applications.

Phosphate-silane coatings were developed on the Q235 mild steel by incorporating poly(dopamine) modified h-BNs into the zinc phosphating bath to enhance the corrosion resistance . The effects of PDA modified h-BNs with varying concentrations (0.10–0.90 g/L) on the surface modification, and corrosion resistance of the composite coatings were investigated. Results show that denser and uniform coatings were achieved for samples containing poly(dopamine) modified h-BN. Sample 0.60 g/L attained outstanding corrosion resistance, which is in one order of magnitude lower than the pure coatings with a current density of 1.95 × 10 −5 A/cm 2 . Modified h-BN effectively accelerates and enhances the corrosion resistance of the phosphate-silane coatings.

The degradation of persistent organic pollutants like 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) remains a critical challenge in wastewater treatment. Transition-metal sulfides have emerged as promising Fenton-like catalysts owing to their tunable electronic structures and abundant redox-active sites. Herein, we report a highly efficient Fenton-like system using ternary copper-iron sulfide (Cu x Fe y S z ) nanocatalysts for 4-CP degradation. Three Cu x Fe y S z phases—CuFe₂S₃, CuFeS₂, and Cu₅FeS₄—were synthesized and systematically evaluated, with CuFe₂S₃ demonstrating superior catalytic activity, achieving complete degradation of 20 mg/L 4-CP within 7 min using 5 mmol/L H₂O₂. Mechanistic studies reveal that sulfur vacancies in CuFe₂S₃ serve as key features, enhancing H₂O₂ adsorption and activation, as evidenced by in situ Raman spectroscopy. Comparative studies with CuFe₂S₃ analogues (0.7-CuFe₂S₃, 0.9-CuFe₂S₃, Fe₃S₄, and Cu₈S₅) confirm the unique catalytic efficiency of stoichiometric CuFe₂S₃, attributed to its optimal electronic structure and vacancy density. This work not only presents CuFe₂S₃ as a cost-effective and high-performance Fenton-like catalyst but also lays a solid foundation for the application of naturally occurring copper-iron sulfide minerals in wastewater treatment.

The reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction has garnered significant attention for its ability to selectively convert CO 2 into CO. However, conventional transition metal catalysts often face challenges such as the generation of byproducts at low temperatures and sintering at high temperatures. In this study, a series of Ga/Al 2 O 3 catalysts with varying Ga loadings was prepared using the impregnation method. Notably, these catalysts exhibit nearly 100% CO selectivity across a broad temperature range of 300–700 °C, with stable catalytic activity maintained after 165 h of testing at 600 °C. Characterization reveals Ga species exist as highly dispersed Ga 2 O 3 on the Al 2 O 3 support. The formation of Ga δ+- H species occurs under an H 2 atmosphere, accompanied by the creation of oxygen vacancies. In situ DRIFTS spectroscopy confirms Ga δ+ -H as the key active site for RWGS, and this species undergoes reversible regeneration in a H 2 environment. This work first reveals the pivotal role of Ga δ+ -H in driving the highly selective RWGS reaction. By promoting CO 2 activation and the formation of key formate intermediates, it achieves nearly 100% CO selectivity. This discovery provides novel design insights and theoretical foundations for developing highly efficient CO₂ conversion catalysts.

Superhydrophobic materials offer promising prospects for utilization in energy, environmental, and related fields. However, their long-term stability in natural environments is constrained by factors such as mechanical wear and aging, which compromise their practical effectiveness and service life. While notable experimental results have been obtained worldwide, scalable application remains limited by the complexity of the requisite fabrication processes. In this study, a durable superhydrophobic coating was developed through a facile one-step process, utilizing a polyaspartic ester (PAE) matrix reinforced with a composite of self-synthesized fluorinated silica (F-SiO2) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) micro-/nano-structures. This strategy effectively enhanced filler dispersion within the resin matrix and promoted hydrophobicity, yielding a stable superhydrophobic surface. The resulting coating exhibits significant potential for scalable application. The optimized coating demonstrated a water contact angle of 161.2° and a roll-off angle of 7.6°, showing excellent repellency to water, corrosive liquids, and fluids across a wide pH range, along with remarkable self-cleaning performance. Benefiting from the synergistic enhancement of h-BN and F-SiO2, the coating also exhibits superior mechanical durability, maintaining a contact angle of 144.4° after 1000 abrasion cycles. Furthermore, in low-temperature anti-icing tests, the coating significantly delayed ice formation on its surface. Notably, after 1000 h of UV aging tests, the F-SiO2@BN/PAE coating retained its intact superhydrophobic structure, with the water contact angle only slightly decreasing from 159.6° to 152.8°, still within an excellent superhydrophobic state, demonstrating outstanding weather resistance. By integrating surface functionalization with mechanical reliability through a facile one-step fabrication process, this study provides significant insights for the large-scale application of hydrophobic materials in the energy and transportation sectors.
