Photodegradation and the low retention rate of pesticides on crop leaves seriously affect their utilization rate. Regarding this problem, we have developed an anti-ultraviolet and high-adhesion pesticide carrier based on halloysite nanotubes (Hal) and was loaded with chlorpyrifos (CPF). By grafting polyethylenimine (PEI) and protocatechuic acid (PCA) onto Hal, PEI- g -Hal (pH) and PCA- g -(PEI- g -Hal) (PPH) were obtained. Load CPF into the cavity of PPH by negative pressure to obtain PPH @ CPF. Its structure and morphology were confirmed by TEM , XPS, FT-IR, zeta potential , TG and XRD , etc. The results indicated that the retention rate of PPH@CPF on cotton leaves was 74.33%, estimated as 1.8 times more efficient than that of PH@CPF. The fluorescence intensity of PPH@FITC was better than that of PH@FITC after 5 times of simulated rain wash. With the decrease in pH, the amino group was protonated gradually, PPH@CPF hydrophilicity was enhanced, and the release rate of PPH@CPF increased gradually. At pH = 5–7 (roughly the same as the pH environment on the leaf surface), PPH@CPF has a faster initial rate and a longer sustained release period than in other pH environments. The photodegradation rate of PPH@CPF was 70% after 24 h, which was much lower than the original CPF. The high adhesion and UV-shielding properties of organic modified Hal played a positive role in reducing the photodegradation and improved the retention rate of pesticides on the crop leaf surface, thus having an extensive significance in crop protection and environmental protection.

Intelligent responsive pesticide delivery systems have been used in agricultural applications to improve pesticide utilization. To improve the bioavailability of pesticides for combating the growth of beet armyworm (which grows fastest at 35°C), we constructed a halloysite nanotubes (Hal)-based sustained release system with intelligent temperature-responsive release properties and strong adhesion to leaves. Hal, N -isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm), dopamine (DA, polydopamine is abbreviated as PDA) and chlorpyrifos (CPF) were used as the raw materials to prepare (PNIPAm- g -Hal)@CPF@PDA (PHCP). PHCP had excellent thermosensitive release performance, and the average release rate at 35°C was approximately 2.5 times higher than that at 25°C. Through a simulated rainwater scour experiment, the retention rate of PHCP on corn leaves was 83.52% (2.25 times higher than that of (PNIPAm- g -Hal)@CPF) (PHC). The continuous release time of CPF from PHCP was more than 60 h. PHCP improved the UV-shielding performance of CPF, and it took 12 times longer than the original CPF to reach the same degradation rate . This study demonstrates a strategy to design pesticide carriers according to the characteristics of the target, which is widely applicable to protect crops, improve the utilization rate of pesticides, and protect the environment.

Composite additives for enhancing the yield stress, sedimentation stability, and long-term reversibility of bidisperse magnetorheological fluids (MRFs) are reported herein. The design and introduction of magnetic Fe 3 O 4 /halloysite-nanotube (HNT) composite additives to carbonyl-iron (CI)-based MRFs are described, and the effects of Fe 3 O 4 /HNT addition on the MRF behavior are elucidated. The rheological, viscoelastic, and cyclic reversibility analyses of the bidisperse Fe 3 O 4 /HNT-CI MRFs indicate that the MR performance increases and subsequently decreases with the increasing content of the Fe 3 O 4 /HNTs. The MRF containing 1.0 wt% Fe 3 O 4 /HNTs shows optimal MR properties and long-term reversibility. Under a magnetic field, the 1.0 wt% Fe 3 O 4 /HNTs are embedded in the interstices of the magnetic chains, enhancing the magnetic dipole–dipole interactions between the particles, strengthening the rigidity of the magnetic chains, and increasing the yield stress of the MRF. The Fe 3 O 4 /HNTs are adsorbed on the surfaces of the CI particles in the absence of a magnetic field, occupying the free space between the CI particles and forming support structures, which prevents aggregation and improves sedimentation stability. Moreover, the designed MRFs respond quickly to magnetic field switching and exhibit enhanced long-term reversibility.

Despite the wide applications in clothing, furniture, and transportation, the well-known “scaffolding effect” in polyester-cotton fabric has caused significant fire hazards compared to sole polyester or cotton fabrics. Therefore, it is of practical significance to endow polyester-cotton fabric with excellent fire safety. In this work, an organic–inorganic composite coating comprising nitrogen–phosphorus–silicon-containing flame retardant and silver nanoparticle-loaded halloysite nanotubes (Ag@HNTs) was designed and prepared to improve the fire safety of polyester-cotton fabrics. Microscale combustion colorimeter results indicated that the peak heat release rate of the modified polyester-cotton fabric with such a composite coating was reduced by 47%. Meanwhile, it could self-extinguish in 9 s after being ignited, and the limiting oxygen index was up to 25%, indicating excellent fire safety. In addition, the total smoke release of the coated polyester-cotton fabric was reduced by 21%, illustrating that the coating of Ag@HNTs could eliminate the smoke generated. The treated fabric also exhibited superior water resistance. Flame retardant mechanisms were well investigated using thermogravimetric analysis–infrared spectrometry analysis and chemiluminescence by studying the gaseous degradation products and hydroxyl radical in the gas phase. This work provides an effective approach to fabricating high-performance flame retardant and smoke-suppressive coatings for textiles.

Using epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) as both a green reductant and stabilizer, ultrafine noble metal nanoparticles (Rh NPs, Pt NPs, Pd NPs) are synthesized and in situ deposited within amino-functionalized halloysite nanotubes (N-HNTs) via a facile and eco-friendly process. These noble metal nanoparticles with extremely small size (∼1.5 nm) are dispersed densely and uniformly on both outside and inside surface of N-HNTs. Rh deposited N-HNTs (Rh–N-HNTs) was investigated as a model composite catalyst and applied in the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), and it exhibited amazing activity and recycle stability. Due to the green and flexibility of the technique described here, noble metal nanoparticles, metal nanoalloy, or metal oxide nanoparticles with ultrafine particle size also can be loaded densely and uniformly on the surface of diverse amino-functionalized nanotubes, nanofibers or nanoporous, and these composites may be applicable in catalysis, photocatalysis, and electrochemical areas.

Lipase B from Candida antarctica (CALB) plays a prominent role as a biocatalyst in several industries, especially for biphasic conversion of functional lipids. Herein, an amphiphilic Janus halloysite nanosheet (JHNS) was fabricated and employed simultaneously as a solid surfactant for stabilizing Pickering emulsion and as a carrier for immobilizing CALB, with the aim to realize highly efficient biphasic bioconversion. The obtained JHNS could stabilize Pickering emulsion for at least 7 days. Immobilization of CALB on JHNS improved the substrate affinity, catalytic efficiency, thermal stability, and alkaline tolerance of the enzyme. Moreover, JHNS-based immobilized CALB was exploited as a biocatalytic platform for the conversion of retinyl acetate, with almost twice increase in conversion efficiency. Taken together, the JHNS-based immobilized CALB paves the way for the design of efficient biphasic conversion system for the production of added-value lipids.

In an attempt to develop an efficient flame retardant for epoxy resin (EP), a hierarchical “dots-core–shell” structure Ag@HNT@PZE was prepared via simple two-step reactions including in-situ growth of Ag within halloysite nanotubes (HNT) and a crosslinking polymerization of polyphosphazene (PZE) coating on Ag@HNT surfaces. Wherein, the dots represented Ag nanoparticles, the core represented HNT , and the shell referred to PZE. Here, Ag encapsulated within HNT acts as an interfacial catalyst to effectively degrade toxicity gas (e.g. CO), while PZE acts as an interfacial compatibilizer for enhancing the dispersion and flame retardant efficiency of Ag@HNT@PZE in the matrix. The flammability and smoke toxicity of EP/Ag@HNT@PZE nanocomposites were both reduced greatly compared to neat EP. The limited oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 grade and char yield of composite EP/5Ag@HNT@PZE reached 33.6 ± 0.72%, V-0 level and 22.8% respectively. Moreover, the peak heat release rate (pHRR) was reduced by 34.2%, accompanied by a higher ratio of graphitized char layer. It showed that flammable pyrolysis products released from EP during combustion were distinctly inhibited because Ag nanoparticles could catalyze the conversion of flammable gas CO to nonflammable CO 2 , which were verified by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It was assumed that halloysite-based hybrid flame retardant could have an impact on toxicity-suppressing and catalyze char formation to produce a barrier effect. The combination of metal-immobilized at clay nanotubes interiors for agglomeration-tolerant and PZE-modified at clay nanotubes exterior for shell-protective provides a potential way to develop efficient flame retardant for the manufacture of nanocomposites with higher fire safety.

In this work, novel sodium alginate–based double-network hydrogel beads were prepared and applied for the water-retention and slow release of fertilizers (WSF). The WSF beads were prepared by ion-crosslinking and the free radical polymerization of acrylic acid, acrylamide, and polymerizable β-cyclodextrin in the presence of urea-loaded halloysites. The WSF beads were characterized using SEM, FTIR , and TGA . Their swelling capacity and water retention were measured by a weighing method and their slow-release behavior was studied by spectrophotometry. The water retention and slow release results showed that the fertilizer displayed improved urea release and water retention properties, indicating that halloysite nanotubes clearly improved the performance of fertilizers. In addition, the experimental data of the slow release of urea in water and soil better fitted the Korsmeyer-Peppas model compared with the Higuchi model, a zero-order model or a first order mode. The release behavior of the fertilizer beads followed a Fickian diffusion mechanism.

In this study, the polyacrylamide-gelatin composite hydrogels reinforced by halloysite nanotubes@polydopamine (HNTs@PDA) with NIR triggered shape memory performance and self-healing capacity were prepared through in-situ free radical polymerization of acrylamide in the mixture of Laponite-RD, HNTs@PDA and gelatin. HNTs@PDA was firstly synthesized through oxidative polymerization of dopamine on the surfaces of HNTs. HNTs@PDA was characterized by transmission electron microscopy , scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis , Zeta potential , particle size analysis , and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photothermal performance of HNTs@PDA was then determined and the results reveal that HNTs@PDA can be employed as a superior photothermal agent to prepare light responsive hydrogels . The structure, morphology, mechanical properties , NIR triggered shape memory performance and self-healing capacity of the composite hydrogels were studied. The modified nanotubes act as cross-linking agent of polyacrylamide to form a rigid network in the hydrogel matrix, which leads to a significant increase in the mechanical properties. Moreover, the NIR triggered shape recovery process of the hydrogel is quite rapid, for example, it is only 63 s for recovering 720° shape change for the hydrogel of HNTs@PDA 40. The maximum NIR triggered healing efficiency of the hydrogels can reach 76%. The HNTs@PDA reinforced hydrogels with superior mechanical properties, NIR triggered shape memory, and self-healing ability exhibit promising applications in biomedical materials and smart engineering materials .

Halloysite nanotubes-reduced graphene oxide hybrids (HRGO), prepared by simultaneous reduction and hybridization of graphene oxide with halloysite nanotubes , were incorporated in epoxy resin to improve the thermal and mechanical properties . The presence of HNTs effectively prevented the aggregation of RGO sheets in epoxy matrix. The thermal stability and thermal conductivity of HRGO/epoxy composites were enhanced. The epoxy composites with the addition of HRGO exhibited significant enhancements of tensile strength , storage modulus and fracture toughness . The improved dispersion of HRGO in epoxy matrix resulted in the better interfacial load transfer efficiency. The improvement in fracture toughness was disclosed of crack deflection and crack pinning mechanisms.

The worldwide oily wastewater is one of the most serious environmental problems. The current membrane separation technology has received an increasing attention toward oil/water emulsions separation. Here, a high-efficient superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic membrane with improved antifouling property was fabricated based on modified halloysite nanotubes anchored at polyvinylidene fluoride/graphene oxide membrane surface via polydopamine adhesive. The composite membrane exhibited an outstanding antifouling performance as well as high pure water flux (1500 L m −2 h −1 ) under gravity driven. Besides, the as-prepared composite membrane could separate both surfactant-free and surfactant-stabilized oil/water emulsions with separation efficiency up to 99.5%. Moreover, this facile preparation and eco-friendly composite membrane provides promising practical application toward environmental remediation.

The study developed a simple, effective and inexpensive strategy for capturing, enriching and detecting circulating tumor cells (CTCs) by using folic acid (FA) as the targeting molecule instead of antibodies. This work constructed magnetic halloysite nanotubes (MHNTs) coated with biocompatible β-cyclodextrin (CD), and conjugated to FA via a PEG-Ad linker, to specifically capture the FA receptor (FR)-overexpressing cancer cells. The capture efficiencies of [email protected] β [email protected] for the Skov3, Hela and A549 cancer cells were 96.3%, 97.0% and 95.6% respectively. In addition, the nanoparticles were able to capture very low numbers of the cancer cells (25–500 cells/mL) from PBS and whole blood, as well as selectively capture the cancer cells over normal HEK 293 T cells. Furthermore, the captured cells were viable and grew normally in vitro , indicating the future potential of downstream analyses. This approach can be adapted for different CTCs, once the tumor-specific surface markers are identified and the efficacy of targeting ligands is established. Taken together, FA-conjugated MHNTs nanoparticles are a highly promising tool for isolating CTCs for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
