Herein, a novel ternary-atomic Fe/Zn/Ir nanozyme (Fe/Zn/Ir TAzyme) with peroxidase (POD)-like and luminescence properties is fabricated through coordinating Ir(III) complex into the as-prepared Fe/ZIF-8. The preparation procedures avoid high-temperature and pyrolysis which endue Fe/Zn/Ir nanocomposite with high stability and can be scaled up. Once Fe/Zn/Ir TAzyme catalyzes the substrate TMB to produce blue oxidized TMB (oxTMB), its luminescence is quenched by the generated oxTMB. Ascribed to its high POD-like activity and interesting luminescence property, a dual-mode sensing platform for the detection of melatonin (MT) is fabricated. In the presence of increasing concentrations of MT, the absorbance of the detection system declines, while the emission of the detection system grows. The detection platform exhibits the limits of detection (LODs) in colorimetric and luminescence detections are 8.9 nM and 8.8 nM, respectively, which can mutually validate the assay results. More importantly, Fe/Zn/Ir TAzyme has been fabricated into test swabs to monitor MT in the way of portable and naked-eye detection. This double-role TAzyme provides new conceptions for researchers to explore novel and highly efficient nanozymes in future.

One-dimensional (1D) Pd-based nanowire materials, characterized by high aspect ratios and exposed high-index crystal surfaces, are widely developed in the field of direct fuel cells. However, their synthesis methods are often not universal and necessitate demanding conditions, including high temperatures and metal templates, leading to resource consumption. In this study, we present a simple and universal one-step method for synthesizing PdM (Sb, Ir, and Bi) nanowire networks (NNWs) at room temperature. Leveraging their structural advantages and the synergistic effects between bimetals, PdM NNWs demonstrate exceptional electrocatalytic performance, exhibiting higher mass and specific activities as well as enhanced durability compared to Pd/C for the ethylene glycol and glycerol oxidation reactions. Notably, PdSb NNWs excelled in electrochemical tests, achieving the highest mass activities of 7.55 and 5.59 A mg −1 for the ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) and glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR), respectively. Additionally, due to the semi-metallic properties of Sb, which can flexibly modify the chemical environment of Pd, the PdSb NNWs exhibited superior antitoxicity and a significantly lower decay of current density across three consecutive chronoamperometry (CA) tests. This research advances the synthesis of palladium-based nanostructures, providing impetus for the design of highly efficient electrocatalysts in the realm of direct alcohol fuel cells.

To improve the limited kinetics of alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), herein, a three-dimensional porous catalyst has been constructed based on the design concept of bi-directional electron modulation and chemical environment regulation of non-metallic and oxophilic transition metal elements with obvious differences in electronegativity on hybrid carbon layer-coated iridium/iridium oxide heterostructure. The Ir/IrO 2 @(N,S)-C possesses significantly superior catalytic activity and electrochemical stability towards alkaline HER with an overpotential of 150 mV reaching 50 mA cm −2 from LSV curve and an increment of 63 mV after 200 h of degradation test at 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, much lower than 277 mV and an elevation of 116 mV just after 25 h in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . The strongly electronegative non-metallic elements effectively modulate the electronic states of iridium/iridium oxide, the ratio of metallic states, and the oxophilic environment of the carbon layer, which enables the catalyst surface favorable for the moderate adsorption of water molecules and intermediates. The material engineering strategy offers a new insight for the development of high-performance catalysts towards water electrolysis based on homologous active species.

Iridium oxide (IrO 2 ) has traditionally been considered to exhibit limited oxygen-reducing capacity. An effective approach to improve the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity in parent catalytic materials is through atomic intercalation. However, the challenge lies in achieving a delicate balance between high ORR activity, structural stability, and minimizing the use of precious metals. Herein, we fabricate 3R-phase iridium oxide (3R-IrO 2 ) with superior ORR activity by intercalating a tiny amount of Pt (3.6 wt% Pt) into the interlayers of 3R-IrO 2 (3.6 wt% Pt-3R-IrO 2 ). When employed as an acidic ORR electrocatalyst, 3.6 wt% Pt-3R-IrO 2 shows a high half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.92 V (vs. RHE) in O 2 -saturated 0.1 M HClO 4 electrolyte, much better than those of Pt/C (0.850 V), 3R-IrO 2 (0.616 V), and Pt nanoparticles on 3R-IrO 2 surface (3.6 wt% Pt@3R-IrO 2 ) (0.618 V) electrocatalysts. It achieves high mass activity of 0.170 A mg Ir −1 at the potential of 0.9 V, which is 5.5 and 11.3 times than that of Pt/C (0.031 A mg Ir −1 ) and 3.6 wt% Pt@3R-IrO 2 (0.015 A mg Ir −1 ), respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experiment results co-jointly demonstrate that the active center of Pt-3R-IrO 2 is anchored to the activated Ir atoms of the 3R-IrO 2 rather than Pt atoms. The d -band center of Ir 5 d orbitals of Pt-3R-IrO 2 is simultaneously regulated, which optimizes the energy barrier of adsorption/desorption toward the ORR process. Intriguingly, the intercalation of Pt atoms into trigonal rhodium oxide (Tri-RhO 2 ) also activates the ORR activity of Rh, suggesting the universality of this strategy. This discovery may provide a new and general way for activation of ORR activity of other precious metal-intercalated nonprecious metal oxide electrocatalysts.

The brain serves as the central hub for both our physiological and psychological activities, and current research on the human brain mostly relies on electroencephalography (EEG) method. Hence, we have developed a flexible nanozymes/iridium-titanium dioxide (SAN/Ir-TiO

) dry electrode for collecting EEG signals. Due to the hygroscopic nature of SAN nanozymes, they facilitate the maintenance of skin moisture balance. Additionally, the combination of iridium nanoparticles with a titanium dioxide nanotube array enables rapid electron transfer, resulting in an average impedance of 14.2 kΩ in the no-hair region and 19.9 kΩ in the hair region for the electrode. Moreover, in experiments involving blinking, clenching teeth, and alpha wave blocking, signal collection correlation between SAN (single atom nanozymes)/Ir-TiO
2
and traditional Ag/AgCl electrodes is 97.1% to 99.5%, and the signal collection correlation between electrodes from the market and traditional Ag/AgCl electrodes is 95.5% to 99.2%. In Steady-State Visual Evoked Potential (SSVEP) experiments with a 9-channel cap, stimulation frequencies ranging from 7.5Hz to 14Hz were recorded and subjected to frequency domain analysis. Within the range of 7.5Hz to 14Hz, the signal-to-noise ratio ranged from 7.5 to 14.1db, surpassing the performance in other regions. In an 8-command SSVEP classification experiment, the train accuracy and online accuracy were as high as 92.8% and 92.8% respectively, demonstrating the feasibility of using SAN/Ir-TiO

Despite proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) being a commercially viable method for high-purity hydrogen production, the development of active and robust anode electrocatalysts with reduced iridium loading under high current density conditions remains highly challenging. Here, we report a core-shell nanostructured catalyst with a metallic titanium core uniformly covered by Ir nanoparticles (Ti@Ir). The spontaneously formed TiO x layer can effectively disperse Ir nanoparticles via interfacial Ti-O-Ir bonds, which in turn increases the oxidation state of Ir towards activated lattice oxygen reactivity, as confirmed by in-situ differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS). As a result, the Ti@Ir exhibits an overpotential of only 272 mV to reach 10 mA cm −2 , 17 mV lower than non-supported Ir nanoparticles, and a 3.82-fold higher mass activity at 1.53 V. Moreover, the Ti@Ir catalyst demonstrates strong stability during a 100-hour test at 10 mA cm −2 . Detailed analysis reveals that the oxidation of iridium close to the titanium core is suppressed. The huge potential for practical application is further confirmed in a PEMWE prototype, with a low iridium loading of 0.5 mg Ir cm −2 , significantly lower than the typical 2 ∼ 4 mg Ir cm −2 required for traditional catalysts. This Ti@Ir catalyst achieves a cell voltage of 1.858 V at an industrial-level current density of 2 A cm −2 and maintains stable operation for 1800 h with an exceptionally low voltage degradation rate of only 1.252 μV h −1 .

The modification of Ir or oxygen vacancies (V o ) is a strategy to enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of heterogeneous nanocatalysts. However, it is crucial to further clarify the synergistic effect of Ir and V o on the enhancement mechanism of OER performance after surface reconstruction. In this work, FeCo Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) co-modified by Ir and V o were successfully prepared by the thermodynamically favorable galvanic replacement reaction. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy confirmed that the synergistic effect of Ir and V o enhanced the charge transfer of FeCo LDHs. XPS spectra reveal robust interactions between Ir and FeCo LDHs. Density-functional theory further reveals that the low-oxygen-coordinated Ir (III) acts as an active site to optimize the OER rate-determining step energy barrier. As a result, Ir and V o co-modified FeCo LDH requires only a 203 mV overpotential to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and, more importantly, operates stably at an industrial current density of 250 mA cm −2 for 312 h without degradation. This work provides new insights and avenues for understanding the enhanced performance mechanism of catalysts after surface reconstruction and for industrial scale-up production.

There is an urgent demand for flexible multifunctional sensitive electronic devices in several potential applications, including personalized health monitoring, human motion detection, human–machine interfaces, soft robotics, and so on. Although exciting progress has been witnessed in recent decades, the excessive dependence on inorganic sensors and flexible substrates makes it difficult to attain multi-function sensing and excellent flexibility simultaneously, as well as their complicated fabrication, technical barriers and high cost. Herein, we report on a family of flexible multi-functional sensitive nanocomposites consisting of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) uniformly distributed in a high elastic form-stable phase change polymer (HEPCP) that exhibit dramatic response to infrared light (IR), temperature and tensile stress in air, together with outstanding flexibility and stretchability. Optimum sensitivity to on/off IR, temperature and tensile stress is demonstrated with electrical conductivity ratios of 103.7, 11.8 and 1084.0 times at room temperature, respectively. The excellent performance of the MWCNT/HEPCP nanocomposites was largely attributed to the cyclic and reversible changes of their MWCNTs conductive network owing to the reversible form-stable phase transitions and high elasticity of the HEPCP substrate, which subsequently affected the thickness of the interfacial HEPCP between adjacent conductive MWCNTs, and thereby the electron tunneling efficiency between the MWCNTs. The novel MWCNT/HEPCP nanocomposites open a new window for multi-function sensing of electronic skin.

Near-infrared II (NIR-II) luminescence imaging, with its significant advantages of deep tissue penetration and high spatial resolution, has become a promising technology for cancer diagnosis. The integration of NIR-II imaging with multifunctional therapeutic modalities has been widely explored in biomedicine, offering valuable development opportunities. Persistent luminescent nanoparticles (PLNPs) are of great interest in biomedical applications due to their ability to emit afterglow without the need for in situ excitation. However, single PLNPs exhibit limited performance in processes related to photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT), and there remains a lack of PLNPs-based multifunctional nanocomposites that simultaneously possess NIR-II afterglow luminescence, as well as PDT, PTT and photocatalytic therapy (PCT) properties. Herein, we report a novel multifunctional nanocomposite, ZGO@IR-820, which is composed of PLNPs (ZnGa 1.97 O 4 :Cr 0.01 ,Bi 0.02 , ZGO) and the near-infrared fluorescent dye IR-820. This nanocomposite not only exhibits NIR-II afterglow emission, but also integrates PDT, PTT and PCT properties. The NIR-II afterglow performance is achieved through the persistent luminescence resonance energy transfer between the PLNPs and IR-820. This multifunctional design expands the photophysical and photochemical properties of PLNPs-based nanocomposites, providing an innovative material design strategy for the development of precise disease diagnosis and efficient therapy.

Acrylonitrile wastewater was an organic wastewater with strong toxicity and poor biodegradability. Therefore, electro-catalytic technology became a promising acrylonitrile wastewater treatment technology because of no secondary pollution, wide application range and low water quality requirements. The optimal Mn-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode material was synthesized by thermal method and applied in electro-catalytic treatment of acrylonitrile wastewater. The electrode materials were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS and electrochemical characterization. SEM, TEM, XRD and XPS indicated that Mn and Sn were capable of incorporating and replacing the part of Ru or Ir and could alter the microstructure of Ru-Ir and the types of Mn and Sn oxides, raising the oxygen evolution potential (OEP) and voltampere charge. When the molar ratio of Mn-Sn was 1:1, OEP, voltampere charge and exchange current density could reach 1.303 V, 1.51 C/cm2 and 6.29×10-4 A/cm2, respectively. The co-doping of Mn-Sn had significant influence on the electrocatalytic performance of Ru-Ir electrode materials. The optimum synthesis conditions of Mn-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode were as follows: the molar ratio of Mn-Sn was 1:1, calcination time was 4.0 hours, calcination temperature was 450℃, and solvent was water. Under certain conditions, the removal rate of acrylonitrile with Mn-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode was 100%. Mn-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode had high oxygen evolution potential and good removal effect of acrylonitrile, which was higher than that of ruthenium iridium electrode and RuO2 electrode.

Water splitting, one of the primary strategies for advancing the utilization of hydrogen production, necessitates the input of external energies to initiate the reaction due to its thermodynamically uphill nature. Nevertheless, Ru-based compounds, which were widely used as benchmark anodic catalysts, facing significant drawbacks such as their susceptibility to dissolution, significantly restrict the overall water splitting efficiency. In this work, we introduce an approach for functionalization through combining Ru nanospheres with Ir to form a Ru@Ir core–shell structure (denoted as Ru@Ir core–shell NSs), which can activate the superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activity, and simultaneously inherit the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance in all-pH condition. The work function difference between Ru and Ir promotes the necessary energetic impetus for electron migration from Ru to Ir, resulting in the charge redistribution. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that the Ir shell, acting as an electron acceptor, could effectively trigger electron rearrangement, augmenting the ligand affinity of hydrogen and oxygen intermediates to attain the most favorable energy states, thereby accelerating the kinetics of hydrogen and oxygen evolution. Our suggested core–shell structure approach for manipulating interface charge distribution might find utility in creating other electrocatalysts for water splitting.

The effect of positive charges in the diphosphino-imidazolium salts of L2 was investigated in terms of coordinating character, structures of corresponding Ir-complexes and catalysis for hydroformylation. It was found that the involved positive charges exhibited strong electron-withdrawing effect on the neighbored phosphine fragment, rendering L2 more π -acceptor ability than the corresponding neutral counterpart of L1 . Consequently, the changed coordinating ability of L1 and L2 led to the variety in the structures and components for the Ir-complexes ( Ir-L1a , Ir-L1b , Ir-L2a , and Ir-L2b ). The complexation of L2 with Ir(acac)(CO) 2 led to a novel five-coordinate Ir(II)-complex of Ir-L2a chelated by a PCC (phosphine–carboanion–carbene) pincer in tripodal mode, whereas the complexation of L1 with Ir(acac)(CO) 2 led to a four-coordinate square-planar Ir(I)-complex of Ir-L1a chelated by a PCP (phosphine–carboanion–phosphine) pincer. In addition, the different catalytic performances of these Ir-complexes ligated by L1 and L2 for hydroformylation of olefins were investigated.
