Two-dimensional layered materials are prone to interlayer stacking in gas sensing applications, leading to a reduction in specific surface area, slow gas diffusion, and inadequate response performance at room temperature. To address these issues, this study employed a combined hydrothermal reduction and freeze-drying method to prepare 3D rGO/MXene/In 2 O 3 composite aerogels, and systematically investigated their microstructure, pore structure, surface chemistry, and formaldehyde sensing behaviour at room temperature. The results indicate that this composite material possesses a continuous, interconnected three-dimensional porous network structure and a high specific surface area (282.78 m 2 /g), which effectively exposes active sites and accelerates gas transport. First-principles calculations confirm the presence of significant interfacial electronic interactions between the multiple components. Under room-temperature testing conditions, the aerogel-based sensor demonstrated a rapid response recovery time (6/8 s) and high formaldehyde response sensitivity (50 ppm, 26.9%), providing an experimental foundation and material design reference for the development of novel room-temperature rapid gas sensors.

Rational construction of In 2 O 3 /ZnO n-n heterojunction hollow hexagonal structure nanotubes via MOF template strategy. • In 2 O 3 /ZnO sensor exhibits an ultrafast response of 1 s to TEA at a low operating temperature of 90 °C. • Compared with the pristine In 2 O 3 sensor, the In 2 O 3 /ZnO composite exhibits a 3.08-fold higher response toward TEA, with a limit of detection of 1 ppm. • The superior gas-sensing performance originates from the unique porous hollow structure of In 2 O 3 /ZnO and the n-n heterojunction constructed at the interface, which provides a promising strategy for the rapid low-temperature detection of TEA. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have designed frame structures and excellent catalytic properties, which can effectively address practical application challenges of triethylamine (TEA) gas sensors. In this study, a hollow porous nanotube composite of In 2 O 3 /ZnO was synthesized using a solvothermal method with MOFs serving as sacrificial templates, and it was then utilized for low-temperature rapid detection of TEA. This composite material, characterized by a unique porous hollow structure and n-n heterojunction, boasts a high specific surface area and numerous active sites, resulting in outstanding gas sensitivity performance at lower operating temperatures. At the optimal operating temperature of 90 °C, the In 2 O 3 /ZnO-2 sensor exhibits a rapid response (1 s) to 200 ppm TEA, and its response value of 34.3 is 3.08 times that of the original In 2 O 3 sensor. In addition, this sensor also exhibits excellent selectivity, reproducibility, and moisture resistance. This experiment provides an effective solution for the rapid detection of TEA at low temperatures. The In 2 O 3 /ZnO sensor exhibits a response value of 34.3 toward 200 ppm TEA at a low operating temperature of 90 °C, with a response time as low as 1 s, as well as excellent selectivity, repeatability and long-term stability. The enhanced depletion layer induced by the n-n heterojunction and the unique hollow hexagonal structure are considered to be the key factors responsible for the improved gas-sensing performance of the composite. Detecting ethanol is critically important due to its widespread industrial applications and potential safety hazards, posing significant risks to both industrial production and human health. However, the development of ethanol sensors with high sensitivity and selectivity remains a substantial challenge. In this study, we demonstrate a highly sensitive and selective ethanol sensor based on rationally-designed heterojunctions, fabricated by decorating In2O3 nanotubes with Ag nanoparticles (NPs) through solvothermal and coprecipitation methods. The obtained Ag/In2O3 sensor exhibits exceptional ethanol sensing performance (S = 110.5 to 100 ppm), which exhibits an approximately 11-fold enhancement compared to that of pristine In2O3, and surpasses those of most ethanol sensors ever reported. Such improvement is mainly attributed to the synergistic effects of Schottky junction formation, electronic sensitization, and chemical catalysis, which collectively enhance electron transfer efficiency and surface reaction kinetics. Moreover, the as-constructed sensor demonstrates rapid response/recovery characteristics (50/70 s), excellent selectivity against interfering gases, and remarkable long-term stability, representing its promise toward practical applications.

Hydrogen
sulfide (H 2 S), a highly toxic and corrosive
gas, requires highly sensitive, selective, rapid, and stable trace-level
detection in various industrial settings. To address the limitations
of conventional metal oxide-based H 2 S sensors─such
as insufficient detection limits, poor selectivity, and inadequate
long-term stability─this study developed an H 2 S
sensor by integrating Pd-loaded In 2 O 3 nanomaterials
with microelectro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology. A Pd–In 2 O 3 composite with a one-dimensional nanorod structure
was successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal method followed by
thermal treatment. Systematic characterization confirmed that Pd nanoparticles
are uniformly dispersed on the In 2 O 3 surface
in the metallic state. When fabricated into a MEMS-based sensor, the
composite exhibited excellent overall performance at near-ambient
temperature (25 ± 2 ° C): a detection limit as low as 50
ppb, response and recovery times of 8 and 13 s, respectively, a selectivity
ratio ≥5 (response to H 2 S compared to interfering
gases such as CO, H 2 , and CH 4 ), and less than
3% fluctuation in repeated tests. Theoretical calculations revealed
that the adsorption energy of H 2 S on Pd–In 2 O 3 (−0.787 eV) is more negative than that on pristine
In 2 O 3 (−0.679 eV), accompanied by a greater
charge transfer (0.124 |e| vs 0.086 |e| for pristine In 2 O 3 ). Mechanistic analysis indicated that Pd doping not
only modulates the band structure of In 2 O 3 via
an electronic doping effect (forming a Schottky junction) but also
acts as catalytic active sites, preferentially promoting the surface
oxidation of H 2 S. The synergistic effect of enhanced adsorption
affinity, accelerated charge transfer (verified by theoretical calculations),
and selective catalysis significantly improves the sensor’s
sensitivity, selectivity, and response speed. This work provides an
effective strategy for material design and device implementation in
developing high-performance, low-power, and easily integrable trace
H 2 S sensors.

Due to the unique physiochemical properties of ionic liquids, they are extensively used as agent or solvent in the synthesis process of nanomaterials. The tailored growth process of functional nanomaterials might result in performance modification for them. In this work, In 2 O 3 nanoparticles were prepared via the hydrothermal method and subsequent calcination (400°C, 500°C, 600°C and 700°C). An ionic liquid (1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [C 16 Mim] Cl) was introduced in the hydrothermal process. After calcination, trace of [C 16 Mim] Cl inclusion in In 2 O 3 was pyrolyzed with Cl residue (Cl-In 2 O 3 ). In compare with control sample synthesized without [C 16 Mim] Cl (pure In 2 O 3 ), In 2 O 3 -600 (Cl-In 2 O 3 calcinated at 600°C) exhibited an excellent UDMH sensing performance at 225°C. The fabricated sensor achieved a high response value (71.0 ± 2.1 to 100 ppm), rapid response time (2 s), good selectivity and a low theoretical limit of detection (1.72 ppb) to UDMH gas. Various characterizations, in regard to oxygen vacancy, surface texture structure, energy band structure and surface acidity, were utilized to analyze the cause for enhanced performance. The ionic liquid inclusion increases the contents of adsorbed oxygen species and improves the adsorption capacity to UDMH gas. This work indicates that the synthesized In 2 O 3 nanoparticles could be the potential candidates for rapid UDMH detection in some specific application scenarios.

The photocatalytic conversion of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into solar fuels using semiconductor nanomaterials represents a promising and sustainable approach to addressing both energy sustainability and climate change concerns. Developing highly efficient semiconductor-based photocatalysts to tailor reaction pathways of CO 2 reduction is the key to producing value-added products with desirable performance. Herein, we report a novel copper-doped indium oxide (Cu-doped In 2 O 3 ) nanostructure prepared via the electrospinning technique, followed by annealing to enhance photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. Our findings demonstrate that modifying the bulk In 2 O 3 with copper enables Cu-doped In 2 O 3 nanofibers to catalyze the CO 2 reduction reaction more efficiently. In situ FTIR spectra measurements were utilized to identify the reaction intermediates and gaseous products for validating the reaction pathway. Combined with in situ electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and vibrational spectroscopy measurements, which revealed that interstitial Cu doping induces lattice distortions and oxygen vacancy (O V ) formation, effectively enhancing visible light absorption, accelerating charge separation, and migration. Consequently, the optimized In 2 O 3 -Cu3% nanofiber photocatalyst demonstrated outstanding selectivity (100 %) and a CO production rate of 45.5 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which is approximately six times higher than In 2 O 3 . Mechanistic studies have indicated that O V defects serve as electron reservoirs to suppress the recombination of photogenerated charges, while simultaneously creating abundant CO 2 chemisorption sites in nanostructures.

Due to the unique properties of heterojunction interfaces, heterojunction materials have broad application prospects in gas sensors. In this study, we synthesized In2O3 microrods through direct calcination of MIL-68(In) at ambient condition. Subsequently, WO3/In2O3 n-n heterojunction composites were built via a solvothermal method. The sensors fabricated with this heterojunction demonstrated exceptional TEA sensing capabilities, such as excellent selectivity and stability, a high response value of 678.43 to 20 ppm TEA, a fast response time (11 s) and a low operating temperature of 160°C. The increased sensing performance is attributed to the improved specific surface area, distinct barrier-controlled electron transport present in n-n type heterojunctions, and the unique selectivity of WO3 to TEA. This work not only offers a strategy for creating heterojunction-rich sensing materials, but also an efficient way for TEA detection.

Graphical Three indium trioxide (In 2 O 3 ) catalysts with varied morphologies and exposed crystal facets were synthesized. The catalyst with a predominantly exposed (211) facet achieved notable CO 2 conversion and CH 3 OH selectivity. This underscores the role of crystal facet engineering in improving catalyst performance for sustainable methanol production. Under the background of “carbon peak and carbon neutrality”, the hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to methanol (CH 3 OH) represents a crucial pathway for promoting green and sustainable development. In 2 O 3 has gained attention as a promising material for CH 3 OH production from CO 2 due to its controllable properties including morphologies, particle sizes and oxygen vacancies, along with its excellent selectivity in CO 2 hydrogenation reactions. Herein, by employing various precursors, three distinct indium trioxide (In 2 O 3 ) catalysts with varied morphologies and predominantly exposed crystal facets were synthesized. It is found that the In 2 O 3 catalyst prepared using ammonia monohydrate (NH 3 ⋅H 2 O) as a precipitator exhibits a primarily exposed (211) crystal facet. This catalyst demonstrates a CO 2 conversion rate of 4.7 %, a selectivity of 55 %towards CH 3 OH, and a space velocity of 8000 ml g cat. −1 h −1 , under reaction conditions of 280 °C and 3 MPa. The (211) crystal face of In 2 O 3 is conducive to the generation of oxygen vacancies which shows exceptional active capabilities for CO 2 , and thus showing outstanding advantages in the selectivity towards CH 3 OH. The results underscore the importance of crystal facet engineering in tailoring the properties of catalysts for efficient CO 2 hydrogenation to CH 3 OH.

Recently, because of the urgent need for safety and health protection, there has been a growing focus on exploring effective and feasible gas sensors based on metal oxide semiconductors (MOSs) for detecting trace levels of hydrogen sulfide (H2S). In this context, a cobalt (Co) doping strategy was proposed to improve the H2S-sensitive properties of In2O3 nanomaterials, enabling them to monitor 1 ppm of H2S at a relatively lower temperature. The Co-doped In2O3 hierarchical porous nanocubes (Co–In2O3 HPNCs) were prepared through a hydrothermal route using In(OH)3 as a precursor. When utilized as a sensing material to detect H2S, the Co–In2O3 HPNCs demonstrated significant enhancements compared to pure In2O3. These enhancements include a reduction in the operating temperature (260 vs 300 °C), a significant increase in response (36.99 vs 12.28 for 20 ppm of H2S), and better selectivity (13.21 vs 3.07 times to ethanol). Even to 1 ppm of H2S, the Co–In2O3 sensor can give a response value of 1.86, highlighting its substantial potential for detecting H2S at the limit of detection (LOD) of 1 ppm. A detailed analysis of the multiple sensitization effects of Co doping reveals that these improved H2S sensing characteristics of Co–In2O3 HPNCs can be primarily traced back to three factors, namely, an increased oxygen vacancy concentration, a narrowing of the bandgap, and an upward shift of the Fermi level.

Lung cancer poses a severe threat to human life and health due to its high morbidity and mortality rates. As a unique biomarker in exhaled breath of lung cancer patients, quantitative detection of n-propanol concentration using semiconductor sensors offers a non-invasive, convenient, and rapid alternative to invasive diagnostic methods like tissue biopsy. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess designable framework structures and excellent catalytic performance, demonstrating significant potential in the field of gas sensing. Herein, we developed a ppb-level n-propanol sensor based on bimetallic MOF-derived hollow In 2 O 3 /Bi 2 O 3 heterojunctions synthesized through a thermal solvent method using MOF as sacrificial templates. The results demonstrate that the In 2 O 3 /Bi 2 O 3 -2 sensor exhibits an ultralow detection limit with a high response value of 1.68–50 ppb n-propanol. Moreover, at 147 °C, it shows rapid response/recovery times (1 s/137 s) and an enhanced response value of 174–100 ppm n-propanol, representing 4.14-fold improvement over pure In 2 O 3 sensors. The sensor also demonstrates exceptional selectivity, reproducibility, and long-term stability. The remarkable gas-sensing enhancement originates from the unique porous hollow structure and interfacial p-n heterojunction formation. This study presents a promising candidate material for ppb-level n-propanol detection.

Utilizing a one-step hydrothermal synthesis, this study produced Pr-doped In 2 O 3 -based ethanol gas sensors. The material’s elemental composition and morphology were investigated by XPS, XRD, SEM, and other characterization methods. Effective substitution of In 3 + lattice sites by Pr 3+ /Pr 4+ ions was achieved, generating smooth irregular polyhedral particles composed of interlocked octahedra with varying sizes. At the optimum temperature of 300 °C, the sensor exhibited a response of 179–100 ppm ethanol, accompanied by rapid response/recovery times of 43 s and 13 s. Compared to pure In₂O₃, the response value increased by 10 times, and the recovery time was reduced by 66 s, while exhibiting excellent selectivity and long-term stability (>150 days). The enhanced ethanol response stems from increased adsorbed oxygen density, which creates a more polarized initial high-resistance state for subsequent gas-sensing reactions by forming a more pronounced surface electron depletion layer and higher initial barrier. Upon contact with target gases, the higher density of adsorbed oxygen participates as reaction sites and promotes surface redox reactions. This leads to a greater flux of released captured electrons, triggering a sharp decrease in the surface barrier and a dramatic macroscopic resistance transition in the material. Ultimately, this significantly amplifies the sensor's response magnitude. The work concludes by presenting a detailed mechanistic analysis of the sensing behavior.

Although different kinds of one dimensional (1D) metal oxide nanofibers (MO-NFs) based field effect transistors (FETs) have been developed in recent years, their intrinsic deficiency in illumination instability are not addressed yet, which further prevented their application in practical life. In this work, due to the outstanding performance of suppressing oxygen vacancies and the blue light down-conversion with low charge transfer transition energy, praseodymium (Pr) is demonstrated an ideal candidate to dope into In 2 O 3 NFs for both transferring the depletion mode to the enhancement mode and enhancing the illumination stability of the FETs. The optima In 2 O 3 NFs-based FET was achieved by doping with 3 mol% Pr and exhibited an excellent electrical performance with a carrier mobility of 6.92 cm 2 V −1 s −1 , an on/off current ratio of ∼5.4 × 10 7 , threshold voltage of 5.2 V, and subthreshold swing of 0.37 V/dec. Moreover, the FETs exhibited good illumination stability under 3600 s negative gate bias stress test with illumination (NBIS). Finally, the FET was also used as a switch to bright the LED in this work, demonstrating its great promise of Pr-doped In 2 O 3 NFs in future one-dimensional electronic devices.
