3D printable ionic conductive hydrogels with super stretch and self-adhesion performances for flexible sensors

Xinqiang Xu,Pan Jiang,Di Liu,Yang Lyu,Xinyan Shi,Zhongying Ji,Xiaolong Wang

Ionic conductive hydrogels (ICHs) have emerged as a landmark soft material for a wide range of applications, such as flexible wearable sensors and electronic skins. However, to achieve a super-stretchability, high strength, and self-adhesion simultaneously by 3D printing remains a significant challenge. In the construction of a hydrogel, ionic liquids (ILs) and tannic acid (TA) have been successfully introduced in the copolymerization of acrylamide (AAm) and poly(ethylene glycol) (diol) diacrylate (PEGDA) to form a p(AAm-co-PEGDA) hydrogel (PAP) system. The PAP hydrogel showed super-stretching (4300%), high strength, and self-adhesion properties. More specifically, the 3D printing of the ICHs provided an effective and flexible way to manufacture flexible wearable sensors, thus greatly simplifying the device fabrication process. In addition, the sensors could be specified by a customized production and were, thus, adapted to a wider range of applications. It is believed that the here presented hydrogel integration with 3D printing will inspire new ideas on how to prepare novel flexible sensors, thus promoting further research on the construction of electronic skins, human-computer interactions, and advanced materials.

Anti-fouling ternary zwitterionic coating membrane with strong surface hydration and salt resistant for efficient long-term emulsion separation in high salinity marine environment

Yan Zhang,Jianlin Yang,Yali Zhao,Zhecun Wang,Gwo Sung Lai

Membrane separation has been acknowledged as an advanced technology to handle the oil spills. However, most of the superhydrophilic/underwater superhydrophobic membranes currently applied for oil/water separation would lose their superwettability when exposed to salty marine environments, leading to serious membrane plugging and separation performance deterioration. Herein, inspired by seawater fish and mussels, a simple, green, and versatile one-step co-deposition strategy is proposed for fabricating a ternary zwitterionic coating with strong surface hydration on diverse membranes, showing excellent anti-fouling properties in high salinity environments, even in the saturated NaCl solution. Moreover, the modified membrane performs well in the long term when separating surfactant-stabilized oil-in-seawater emulsion and with impressive recyclability. The ternary zwitterionic coating membrane exhibits great potential in treating oily wastewater in marine.

Bingfang Wang,Ailin Lv,Haofan Wu,Bihan Guo,Yuhan Lu,Zhiqiang Chang,Yuqing Wu,Xiang Li,Qiuyu Yang,Jianfang Nie,Jing Wei,Qinjuan Ren,Daizong Ji,Ya Zhang,Menahem Y. Rotenberg,Yin Fang

Cardiovascular disease (CAD) is a major global public health issue, with mortality rates being significantly impacted by cold temperatures. Stable and reliable electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring in cold environments is crucial for early detection and treatment of CAD. However, existing skin sensor struggle to balance freeze resistance, breathability, flexibility, conductivity and adhesion at cold temperatures. Here, we introduce a solvent cross-linking strategy and an in situ transfer method to prepare ultrathin bioionic gels, featuring a freezing point below −80 °C and a thickness of only 12.6 μm. The strong and abundant interactions between the ionic liquid solvent and the zwitterionic polymer effectively suppress low-temperature crystallization, forming a toughened and highly adhesive network structure. This network enables the in situ formation of an ultrathin morphology, which can be seamlessly transferred onto various substrates. Furthermore, the solvent-cross-linked network maintains a large interpolymer chain spacing, facilitating rapid ion transport pathways. Even at subzero temperatures, the gel maintains its multifunctionality, demonstrating tissue-like softness (34.6 kPa), high ionic conductivity (10.06 mS cm–1), excellent stretchability (360%), high transparency, robust adhesive strength (175.3 kPa) and interfacial toughness (1146 J m–2). Integrated into a flexible wearable device, the ultrathin gel ensures excellent skin conformity, user comfort, and high signal-to-noise ECG signal acquisition. Leveraging an artificial neural network, the system analyzes bradycardia ECG signals and achieves 96.88% accuracy in arrhythmia detection under cold conditions. This bioionic gel-based system presents a promising solution for early CAD diagnosis and prediction in extreme environments.

3D printing Si3N4 reinforced phase change composites with superior electrical insulation properties for thermal management

Houbao Liu,Wei Wang,Zhenbang Cheng

Effective thermal management materials are crucial for modern electronics, aerospace, and energy applications. This study investigates a novel approach by constructing a Si₃N₄ skeleton with a triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) structure and reinforcing phase change materials (PCM) with boron nitride (BN) to develop Si₃N₄@BN/PCM composites that exhibit enhanced thermal conductivity, thermal stability and electrical insulation. Utilizing digital light processing 3D printing, a Si₃N₄ TPMS structure was prepared and subsequently reinforced with BN via vacuum-assisted infiltration into PCM. The incorporation of 3D Si₃N₄ skeleton and 2D BN flakes created a dual-scale network within the PCM, significantly increasing thermal conductivity from 0.24 W/m·K to 2.04 W/m·K. The presence of Si₃N₄ and BN notably improved thermal stability and reduced the coefficient of thermal expansion. Additionally, electrical insulation properties improved with an increase in volume resistivity and breakdown strength to 5.1 × 10 1 ⁴ Ω·cm and 62.4 kV/mm, respectively. This work demonstrates that Si₃N₄@BN/PCM composites effectively integrate high thermal conductivity, stability, and electrical insulation, thereby meeting the stringent demands of thermal management applications.

A Hybrid Hydrogel with Intrinsic Immunomodulatory Functionality for Treating Multidrug-Resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa Infected Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Xiaoliang Qi,Yizuo Shi,Chaofan Zhang,Erya Cai,XinXin Ge,Yajing Xiang,Ying Li,Bairui Zeng,Jianliang Shen

Contemporary options for multidrug-resistant bacteria infected diabetic foot ulcers (IDFUs) are predominantly nonspecific. These IDFU injuries often display prolonged inflammation and delayed tissue repair, mainly attributed to an overabundance of M1 macrophages in the hostile diabetic microenvironment. Although immunomodulatory hydrogels show promise for IDFU-focused care, a targeted, safe transition from M1 to M2 macrophages using simplified techniques remains a significant obstacle. Here, we introduce a hybrid hydrogel (GGG) with inherent immunomodulatory capabilities for IDFUs. GGG is composed of interpenetrating polymer networks featuring gallium-induced self-assembling glycyrrhizic acid and a photo-cross-linked gelatin methacryloyl matrix. Importantly, GGG effectively decreases the ratio of M1 to M2 macrophages in conditions infected with drug-resistant bacteria by disrupting iron metabolism and scavenging reactive oxygen species, which contributes to enhanced treatment results for diabetic wounds. To sum up, the immunomodulatory strategy we present provides a straightforward, safe, and highly effective therapeutic avenue for managing IDFUs.

A hydrogel optical fibre sensor for rapid on-site ethanol determination

Simin Hong,Mingming Yan,Yuan Feng,Huifang Chen,Ben Xu,Chunliu Zhao,Juan Kang

Ethanol plays a critical role in the modern chemical industry, food production, and medical research. Given its wide applications, the detection of ethanol concentration is very necessary. In this paper, a fibre device for rapid ethanol detection is proposed. The sensing head was fabricated with multimode fibre. The hydrogel was photo-cured on the fibre tip from polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA). In the hydrogel, rhodamine 6G (R6G) was immobilized as the fluorescent indicator. The sensor was designed based on the swelling behaviour of the hydrogel in liquid. The transparency of the hydrogel was modulated by the component of the water–ethanol mixture, thus, the fluorescence intensity of R6G was monitored for the determination of ethanol. Within the range of 0–62.2 vol%, the detection limit (LOD) was 0.4 vol%. A detailed comparison with other detection methods showed that the proposed sensor has the advantages of being single-ended, low LOD, cost-effective, and easy to prepare. It has great potential for on-site ethanol detection applications.

A Janus hydrogel that enables wet tissue adhesion and resists abdominal adhesions

Hanjie Shao,Junjie Deng,Zeping Xu,Jiujun Zhu,Wei Jian,Peiru Zhang,Xinhua Zhou,Xie Zhang,Hao She,Jingyun Ma,Xiang Wu,Hong Li

Hydrogels have indeed achieved significant advancements, yet their clinical translation has been hampered by their inherent limitations in wet adhesion properties. Furthermore, the design of adhesive hydrogels that can resist postoperative adhesions remains an intricate challenge. In this study, we introduce a Janus hydrogel (JGP) that offers a novel approach to address these challenges. The JGP hydrogel has two asymmetrical sides, consisting of an adhesion layer (AL) and an anti-adhesion layer (AAL). Specifically, the AL incorporates three key components: N-[tris(hydroxymethyl)methyl]acrylamide (THMA), acrylic acid (AAc), and the acrylic acid N-hydroxysuccinimide ester (AAc-NHS). By drying the AL, it has a rapid water absorption capability. The abundance of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups in the AL enables the formation of robust hydrogen bonds with tissues, thereby achieving superior adhesive properties. Additionally, the synergistic effect of THMA's tridentate hydrogen bonding and the covalent bonding formed by AAc-NHS with tissue ensures long-lasting wet adhesion. To realize the anti-adhesion function, one side of the AL was immersed in a solution of [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide (SBMA), which undergoes crosslinking to form the AAL. A comprehensive series of tests have confirmed that the JGP hydrogel exhibits exceptional mechanical properties, efficient and enduring adhesion, excellent biocompatibility, and degradability. Moreover, it possesses remarkable hemostatic properties and robust anti-abdominal adhesion characteristics.

3D-Printed Bifunctional Scaffold for Treatment of Critical Bone Defects Based on Osteoimmune Microenvironment Regulation and Osteogenetic Effects

Ruipeng Huang,Chuan Hu,Shaoqing Xu,Hongyu Chen,Junpeng Pan,Jiechao Xia,Dingqi Xie,Yang Jin,Zhijie Wang,Chengliang Zhao

The critical-sized bone defect resulting from trauma, tumor resection, and congenital deformity fails to undergo spontaneous healing due to its substantial size, while the ensuing inflammatory process and hypoxic environment further impede the regenerative process. Therefore, it has consistently presented a significant clinical challenge. In the present study, we incorporate a glycyrrhizic acid (GA)-functionalized hydrogel onto the surface of a Hydroxyapatite (Hap)-modified Polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffold to fabricate a composite scaffold. The composed scaffold showed favorable anti-inflammatory and antioxidative capabilities by modulating macrophage polarization and scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS); the modification of Hap enhanced its osteogenic ability. An in vivo rat skull defect model confirmed that the composed scaffold efficiently promotes bone regeneration. In general, the composed scaffold with the ability of osteoimmune microenvironment regulation can effectively repair critical-sized bone defects. This strategy provides a promising method for the reconstruction of large segmental bone defects.

A bioinspired switchable adhesive patch with adhesion and suction mechanisms for laparoscopic surgeries

Xiang Wu,Junjie Deng,Wei Jian,Yanyu Yang,Hanjie Shao,Xinhua Zhou,Ying Xiao,Jingyun Ma,Yang Zhou,Rong Wang,Hong Li

Medical adhesives play an important role in clinical medicine because of their flexibility and convenient operation. However, they are still limited to laparoscopic surgeries, which have demonstrated urgent demand for liver retraction with minimal damage to the human body. Here, inspired by the suction cup structure of octopus, an adhesive patch with excellent mechanical properties, robust and switchable adhesiveness, and biocompatibility is proposed. The adhesive patch is combined by the attachment body mainly made of poly(acrylic acid) grafted with N -hydroxysuccinimide ester, crosslinked biodegradable gelatin methacrylate and biodegradable biopolymer gelatin to mimic the adhesive sucker rim, and the temperature-sensitive telescopic layer of microgel-crosslinked poly( N -isopropylacrylamide- co -2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) to shrink and form internal cavity with reduced pressure. Through mechanical tests, adhesion evaluation, and biocompatibility analysis, the bioinspired adhesive patch has demonstrated its capacity not only in adhesion to tissues but also in potential treatment for medical applications, especially laparoscopic technology. The bioinspired adhesive patch can break through the limitations of traditional retraction methods, and become an ideal candidate for liver retraction in laparoscopic surgery and related clinical medicine.

Poly(glycerol succinate) hydrogel promotes spinal cord repair by regulating bio-energetic activity in severe injury

Ang Li,Xin Miao,Zhengzhe Han,Junqing Lin,Jinghuan Huang,Xianyou Zheng

Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is a major clinical challenge, imposing a significant burden on both patients and healthcare systems. The complexity of SCI stems from its multifactorial pathogenesis, incorporating a variety of regulating factors. Despite the exploration of mechanisms of SCI pathophysiology and the development of biomedical therapies, current clinical interventions are still limited to surgical interventions and rehabilitative care. This study introduces an approach to protect mitochondria—a pivotal factor in SCI pathogenesis—through the use of poly(glycerol succinate)-based hydrogel. To regulate the process, the PEGylated poly(glycerol succinate) (PPGS), was designed and synthesized via a novel method, combined with recent findings that emphasize the roles of glycerol-based hydrogel in soft tissue regeneration. Building on these, an innovative, bioenergetically-active hydrogel, acrylated PEGylated poly(glycerol succinate) (APPGS), which improves mitochondrial function after injury, targeting SCI treatment, was developed. The evidence, supported by both in vivo and in vitro assays, affirms the therapeutic efficacy of the APPGS hydrogel in SCI contexts. The APPGS hydrogel represents a significant advancement with substantial potential for clinical application in SCI therapy, offering a new avenue for addressing the complex challenges of SCI management.

Percutaneous electrical stimulation combined with conductive nerve guidance conduits for peripheral nerve regeneration

Tong Qi,Xiao Wang,Jiamei Zhang,Maling Gou,Chengqi He

The repair, regeneration, and functional recovery of peripheral nerve defects have always been the focus and difficulty of clinical treatment. Among them, the slow speed of nerve regeneration, the long-term loss of electrical signal control, and the degeneration and atrophy of target organs are key issues that need to be solved urgently. Here, we designed and constructed nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) that can mimic the conductivity of natural nerves to deliver exogenous electrical stimulation and endogenous electrophysiological signals in a targeted and efficient manner. The inner layer of the conductive NGCs was an oriented fiber formed by coprocessing the conductive polymers poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PEDOT: PSS) and chitosan (CS) via electrospinning technology. The outer layer was a pluronic F127 diacrylate (F127DA) hydrogel with good mechanical properties. We used a rat sciatic nerve defect model to evaluate the ability of conductive NGCs to promote peripheral nerve repair. Compared with NGCs without added conductive polymers, the conductive NGCs in this study can significantly promote the recovery of the shape and function of peripheral nerves, achieving the repair effect of autografts. This work combined regenerative technology with rehabilitation medicine, providing a promising new strategy for repairing peripheral nerve defects.

Photo-crosslinking modified gelatin-silk fibroin hydrogel for accelerating wound repair of open abdomen

Ye Liu,Sicheng Li,Jinjian Huang,Xuanheng Li,Ze Li,Canwen Chen,Guiwen Qu,Kang Chen,Yitian Teng,Rui Ma,Xiuwen Wu,Jianan Ren

Open abdomen (OA), a major advance in modern trauma surgery, enables the treatment of severe abdominal trauma, infections, and hypertension by temporarily closing the abdominal cavity without suturing. Although OA can reduce mortality rates, it also presents challenges such as disruption of the abdominal environment, intestinal exposure, and impaired wound healing. Current temporary abdominal closure (TAC) techniques using polypropylene (PP) mesh are susceptible to abrasion and rupture of the intestine, leading to adhesions and serious complications such as intestinal fistulas and chronic wounds. These complications seriously impact outcomes due to mesh rigidity and its incompatibility with surrounding tissues. In this study, we designed a multifunctional hydrogel composed of GelMA (Gelatin Methacryloyl) and SilMA (Silk Fibroin Methacryloyl) as a promising solution for open abdominal wound repair. In vitro experiments confirmed the biocompatibility, self-healing properties, pro-angiogenic effects, and promotion of macrophage polarization. In vivo studies revealed that the GelMA-SilMA hydrogel could enhance abdominal wall tissue thickness and integrity via isolating the peritoneal cavity, protecting the intestinal tract, polarizing macrophages, promoting collagen formation, inducing neovascularization, inhibiting oxidative stress, and suppressing inflammation. Furthermore, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, and RNA sequencing were employed to evaluate the wound healing mechanisms of GelMA-SilMA hydrogels. The results demonstrated that the hydrogels can promote angiogenesis, inhibit inflammation and immune responses, and enhance wound healing by activating the HIF-a-VEGF signaling pathway, RAP1 signaling pathway, and PI3K-AKT signaling pathway. Hence, the multifunctional GelMA-SilMA hydrogel has tremendous potential for clinical use in open abdominal wound repair.
