The micro/nano-structural design of 2D-interlayers greatly enhances the electrochemical energy and kinetics as supercapacitor electrode. Herein, a hetero-Co9S8 QDs doped 2D CoNi-LDH with the proper content was constructed through diverse sulfurization times, showing 3D flower-like microsphere. The highly dispersed active QDs on 2D layers promoted both rapid ion/electron transfer kinetics and electrochemical storage capacity, which were evidenced by experiments and density function theory calculations. As a result, the assembled hybrid supercapacitor QDs-Co9S8/CoNi-LDH//activated carbon displays a maximum energy density of 33.3 Wh·kg-1 at a power density of 820.0 W·kg-1. Furthermore, the in-depth analysis of interlayer ion diffusion and formation of quantum dots in heterostructure provide a good way for synthesizing high performance electrode materials with adjustable size and composition.

Oxygen evolution reactions (OER) are often the decisive step in determining the water electrolysis rate. The first row of transition metals and their derivatives, represented by Ni and Fe, have attracted much attention due to their excellent OER performance. Here, we develop a one-step strategy for preparing oxygen-evolving electrodes, in which the NiFeOOH-modified NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanosheet is supported by nickel foam. At 100 mA·cm−2, the overpotential of NiFeOOH-NiFe-LDH was just 227 mV, and the duration times were over 200 h in 1 mol·L−1KOH. Furthermore, the co-existence of LDH and hydroxyl oxides helps the oxygen evolution reaction. These results suggest the potential for this synthesis strategy to provide a low-cost, highly active OER electrocatalyst for industrial water splitting.

Electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 affords a potential way to mitigate the greenhouse effect and fuel crisis. In this work, we compared highly-dispersed CuO nanocomposites and Cu–Cu 2 O nanocomposites which all derived from Cu x Al-LDH for CO 2 electrochemical reduction . The Cu–Cu 2 O based nanocomposites obtained through the restoration strategies still retain its layered structure, simultaneously increasing dual Cu–Cu 2 O active sites, which exhibit excellent performance in selective reduction of CO 2 to C 2 H 4 . The Cu 5 Al-ER obtained through in-situ electrochemical reduction is modified by bulk phase, which can regulate active species, increase surface active sites, enhance C–C coupling. Meanwhile, the electrochemical strategy offers numerous benefits, including gentle conditions, adjustable monitoring, exceptional efficiency and adaptability. We have confirmed that cost-effective Cu–Cu 2 O based nanocomposite derived from Cu 5 Al-LDH can effectively promote C–C coupling during electrochemical CO 2 conversion and improve FE C2H4 . The FE C2H4 of Cu 5 Al-ER reaches 36% at −1.2 V vs. RHE. And the current density reaches −172 mA·cm −2 at −1.6 V vs. RHE. The results showed that compared to Cu 5 Al-LDO, the FE C2H4 of Cu 5 Al-ER increased by 2.6 times. In addition, Cu 5 Al-ER exhibits excellent stability during the 12 hours CO 2 catalytic reduction process.

A series of hierarchical flower-like CdS/carbon quantum dots/NiAl-LDH (CCL) photocatalyst have been successfully prepared to achieve efficient conversion of CO 2 -to-CO via a simple yet effective hydrothermal method. In the CCL, interspersed-CQDs not only increase the number of reactive sites but also reduce inner electronic impedance with the assistance of light reflecting-scattering effect. This significantly improves electron migration efficiency and inhibits the recombination of photoinduced electron-holes pairs. Without any sacrificial agent or photosensitizer, the sample of CCL-1 exhibits the highest CO evolution rate of 7.04 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 in water under simulated sunlight illumination with a large specific surface area (129.15 m 2 g −1 ) and an appropriate CQDs content of 15.2 wt%, which is 12.8- and 11.2-fold higher than those of pristine LDH, pure CdS, and many previously reported LDH-based counterparts. A type-Ⅱ interfacial charge transfer mechanism is proposed, where electrons migrate rapidly from CdS to LDH with highly-interspersed CQDs as unhindered electron conduction bridges. The present work outlines a simple and controllable LDH-based heterojunction, which give rise to superior photocatalytic activity for CO 2 photoreduction.

Surface defect engineering has been regarded as an appealing strategy to improve photocatalytic performance, but defects are susceptible to inactivation and thus lose their function as active sites. In this study, we successfully tailored and identified the dynamic evolution of surface hydroxyl defects over ZnTi-layered double hydroxide (ZnTi-LDH) photocatalyst. The enrichment of surface hydroxyl electrons and the dynamic circulation of hydroxyl defects result in enhanced separation and transport capabilities of photogenerated carriers, thereby ensuring the perpetual activation of small molecules into •O 2 − and •OH. The optimized structure has demonstrated NO removal efficiency values as high as 70.0 %, while concurrently suppressing the emission of NO 2 — a dangerous byproduct. Furthermore, ZnTi-LDH exhibits remarkable adaptability to varying environmental conditions and satisfactory durability over extended periods of reaction. This research offers valuable insights into the key role of surface hydroxyl in sustainable NOx removal technologies, and the findings contribute significantly to the advancement of environmental remediations.

In this work, a 2D-3D activator De@NiFe-LDH was constructed by in-situ growth of 2D NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) on the surface of 3D diatomaceous earth (De). The analysis of SEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS and BET were used to characterize the samples. The as-prepared De@NiFe-LDH achieved 99.4 % removal of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) via activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was verified as dominant reactive oxygen species responsible for TC removal via quenching tests. Mechanism investigation suggested that the redox cycles of Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ and Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ on the surface of De@NiFe-LDH were crucial for PMS activation. In addition, the reasonable reusability and versatility of De@NiFe-LDH as well as low-toxicity of treated water endowed the De@NiFe-LDH/PMS system with a wide range of applications.

Transition metal double hydroxides (LDHs) are among the most promising electrode materials in electrochemical energy storage. In this study, we synthesized electrodeposited nickel–cobalt layered double hydroxide (NiCo−LDH) to investigate the significant capacity gap in LDHs at different scan rates in an alkaline electrolyte. Experimental results demonstrate that the degradation of capacity at high scan rates is primarily attributed to the slow ion diffusion and the decreased reversibility of active metal ions. Furthermore, by exploiting the low reversibility of the deprotonation reaction at high scan rates, a NiCo−LDH with enriched hydrogen vacancies (H v −rich LDH) was obtained. Consequently, the H v −rich LDH, when used as the cathode in a magnesium ions hybrid supercapacitor (Mg−HSC), exhibits a high specific capacity of 94.97mAh g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 and maintains a significant capacity of 41.90 mAh g −1 even at 20 A g −1 . Moreover, a Mg−HSC device assembled with an H v −rich LDH cathode and a VS 2 anode delivers a high energy density of 48.44 Wh kg −1 and a power density of 937.49 W kg −1 , demonstrating its practical application value. This work not only provides a theoretical basis for the defect design of LDHs but also expands their applicability.

Heterointerface engineering is an effective strategy to design and construct high-performance photocatalysts. Herein, polyaniline (PANI) nanoparticles and ZnTi layered double hydroxide (ZnTi-LDH) nanosheets were integrated to form organic–inorganic heterostructure (PANI/LDH) via d – π electronic coupling using in-situ polymerization for photocatalytic oxidation/reduction towards tetracycline (TC) and Cr(VI). The photocatalytic activity was closely related to feed amount of aniline (Ani) in the polymerization process, which the abundant PANI nanoparticles were evenly distributed on the surface of ZnTi-LDH nanosheets at the proper Ani feed amount, and thus reinforced d –π electronic coupling at the organic–inorganic interfaces more efficiently. Density functional theory calculations further verified the existence of d –π overlap at the PANI/LDH heterointerface. The strong d –π coupling boosted charge separation and transfer to improve photocatalytic efficiency. As a result, the optimal PANI/LDH (0.3) exhibited outstanding photocatalytic activities with 97.8 % Cr(VI) reducing rate and 87.8 % TC removal rate in the single Cr(VI) and TC system, as well as high simultaneous removal rate of Cr(VI) and TC in TC/Cr(VI) coexistence system, respectively. Subsequently, the photocatalytic enhanced mechanisms were put forward to remove Cr(VI) and TC under visible-light. Finally, the aquatic toxicity of the photolytic products was evaluated using Chlorella sp. as an ecological indicator, showing that the PANI/LDH had a notable detoxification efficiency of TC and Cr(VI).

The integration of layered double metal hydroxides (LDH) into epoxy resin (EP) for flame retardancy is in line with the principles of environmentally friendly and sustainable development. In this study, polydopamine (PDA)-primed intercalated LDH containing iron and cobalt ions (LDH-DBS@PDA) was prepared, and its chemical composition, structure and morphology were thoroughly characterized. Due to the synergistic flame-retardant properties exhibited by LDH and PDA, as well as the catalytic charring properties of iron and cobalt ions in both condensed and gaseous phases, EP composite with 5 wt% LDH-DBS@PDA achieved a UL-94 V-0 rating with a limiting oxygen index of 30.7 %. Moreover, EP/LDH-DBS@PDA exhibited a significant decrease in total heat release by 48 % and smoke release by 52 %, demonstrating remarkable fire safety performance. Additionally, the existence of LDH-DBS@PDA improved impact strength , tensile strength , and glass transition temperature due to strong interactions between PDA and EP matrix. This work presents a promising strategy for developing highly efficiency flame retardants with excellent compatibility for polymeric materials.

Layered bimetallic hydroxide (LDH) has garnered significant attention due to its outstanding redox activity, making it a highly promising candidate as an anode material for sodium-ion batteries. In this study, a CoSn-LDH@MXene nanocomposite was skillfully fabricated through a one-step hydrothermal and ultrasonic treatment, involving the integration of CoSn-LDH microspheres onto Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets. CoSn-LDH was incorporated into the MXene interlayers via electrostatic adsorption, ensuring uniform dispersion, thereby preventing further MXene stacking and simultaneously increasing the interlayer distance. The exceptional electrical conductivity of MXene, combined with the abundant active sites provided by CoSn-LDH, synergistically enhances ion and electron transfer, resulting in the remarkable electrochemical performance of CoSn-LDH@MXene nanocomposites in sodium storage. An initial specific capacity of 976.1 mAh g–1 was achieved at 0.1 A g–1, with a remarkable capacity retention of 97.29% observed even after 100 cycles at 0.5 A g–1. The superior electrochemical performance of the CoSn-LDH@MXene nanocomposites can be attributed to the synergistic interplay between the robust redox-active LDH structure and the highly conductive MXene network. These findings suggest that CoSn-LDH@MXene nanocomposites hold significant promise for the advancement of sodium storage materials.

The extensive use and improper disposal of antibiotics and organic dyes have resulted in their substantial release into the natural environment, posing a grave threat to both the ecological system and human health. This study successfully synthesised an ultra-thin CuZnCr layered ternary hydrotalcite (CuZnCr-LDH) nanosheet, exhibiting remarkable photo-Fenton properties, through a streamlined one-step coprecipitation method. When the ratio of Cu + to Zn 2+ is 2:1, methylene blue (MB) degradation efficiency reaches 96.5 % after 70 min, and that of CIP attains 75 % after 3 h, and the mineralization rate can be as high as 81.3 % and 64.7 %. The key to enhancing its performance is that the ultrathin structure is conducive to carrier migration, a large number of photogenerated electrons are conducive to the recovery of valence states of Cu and Cr ions to promote Fenton reaction cycle, and the rich active species actively participate in the reaction. Furthermore, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signaling and active material capture experiments have shown that photogenerated superoxide radicals (‧O 2 - ), hydroxyl radicals (‧OH) and holes (h + ) as active species play a crucial role in the degradation process. And the cyclic pattern of the high-priced metal was verified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) testing, which is a key factor in the photo-Fenton synergy. Based on the experimental results, the photo-Fenton degradation mechanism is proposed. This study holds important promise in addressing the pressing problem of water pollution caused by antibiotics and organic pollutants.

The photocatalytic reduction-induced activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) presents an eco-friendly and cost-effective approach for oxidatively degrading diverse organic pollutants in water. Nonetheless, the swift reconfiguration of photoinduced electron holes significantly hinders its overall efficiency. In this investigation, we present a novel photocatalytic persulfate activation system based on a ZnAl-LDH catalyst finely tuned by naturally polarized tourmaline (TL) minerals. The composite photocatalysts, TL/ZnAl-LDH, were employed to activate PMS for the simultaneous and efficient degradation of nitenpyram (NTP) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). In this system, the TL/ZnAl-LDH composite produced electrons and holes under light excitation. Subsequently, the photogenerated electrons from ZnAl-LDH on the TL surface activated PMS, leading to the formation of SO 4- •. Some of the SO 4- • further reacted with H 2 O/•OH to generate •OH. Ultimately, the NTP and TC were oxidized through the combined action of SO 4- •, •OH and photoinduced holes. Under the optimal conditions in the presence of PMS, TL/ZnAl-LDH degraded completely both NTP and TC within 45 min, with a 17 % mineralization rate. The findings indicate that the polarized electric field of TL not only promoted the separation and migration of electron-holes in ZnAl-LDH but also optimized the electronic structure of ZnAl-LDH. This optimization resulted in enhanced light absorption and improved reduction capacity. This study innovatively developed a system for activating photocatalytic PMS by incorporating naturally polarized minerals. This introduced a novel approach to sustainable and cost-effective advanced oxidation processes for water treatment.
