In this work, a simple one-step hydrothermal synthesis of La doped SnO 2 nanocomposites was studied. The structure, morphology, specific surface area, and chemical composition were determined by XRD , SEM, BET, and XPS techniques. The gas sensing performance of SnO 2 and La/SnO 2 nanocomposites with varied La doping dosages on n-butanol gas was systematically investigated. The results manifested that under the testing environment (50 % relative humidity and 30 °C), La doped SnO 2 nanocomposite sensor presented high response (69), excellent selectivity, good repeatability and long-time stability to n-butanol gas at 160 °C. Especially, the 7 mol% La doped SnO 2 sensor displayed a 5.9 times higher response to 50 ppm n-butanol than the SnO 2 sensor. In comparison with bare SnO 2 , La doping increased the band gap value of 7 mol% La/SnO 2 nanocomposite by 6.23 %, decreased particle size by 11.83 %, and increased the oxygen defect concentration by 6.07 %. Due to the synergistic effect of the above factors, the gas sensing performance of La doped SnO 2 nanocomposites towards n-butanol gas was enhanced. Therefore, La doped SnO 2 nanocomposites might be a potential gas sensing material for monitoring n-butanol gas at relatively high humidity.

Despite the considerable potential of O3-type layered oxide cathodes in sodium-ion batteries due to their high theoretical capacities, the rapid capacity degradation caused by high Na + diffusion barriers and irreversible phase transitions seriously hampers their practical application. Herein, we propose the La-doping strategy in O3-type layered oxide to decrease diffusion barriers and strengthen transition metal–oxygen (TM-O) bonds, thereby significantly improving the electrochemical performance. The strong La-O bonding facilitates highly reversible O3-P3 phase transitions during (de)sodiation and enhances the stability of lattice oxygen at high voltages. Specifically, the La-doped O3-type oxide exhibits impressive cycling stability, with the capacity retention increasing from 63 % to 80 % after 500 cycles at 1C. The full cell assembly with La-doped oxide as cathode and hard carbon as anode demonstrates a high energy density of 323.7 Wh kg −1 at 0.1C, with a capacity retention of 74.6 % after 300 cycles at 1C. This work provides new insights in La-doping to promote the commercial application of O3-type cathodes for sodium ion batteries.

The catalytic direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO 2 and methanol is a crucial approach to utilizing CO 2 and producing high-value chemicals. However, the high stability of the CO 2 molecule imposes thermodynamic limitations on this reaction pathway, along with challenges related to insufficient catalyst activity and stability. Currently, solutions primarily focus on developing efficient catalyst. Herein, La-doped CeO 2 nanoflower catalysts (La x CeO 2 ) were synthesized via hydrothermal method. Characterization reveals that La doping optimizes the pore structure and enriched oxygen vacancies, thereby enhancing catalytic performance. Notably, La 0.1 CeO 2 exhibits the largest pore size and highest oxygen vacancy content, achieving a remarkable DMC productivity of 9.42 mmol/g under 140 °C, 4 MPa of CO 2 , and 3 h of reaction, surpassing pure CeO 2 nanoflowers. Based on experimental findings and in-situ diffuse infrared Fourier transform analysis, a plausible reaction pathway was proposed. This work underscores the potential of La x CeO 2 nanoflowers as efficient catalysts for sustainable CO 2 conversion to DMC.

W-type barium–nickel ferrite (BaNi 2 Fe 16 O 27 ) is a highly promising material for electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption because of its magnetic loss capability for EMW, low cost, large-scale production potential, high-temperature resistance, and excellent chemical stability. However, the poor dielectric loss of magnetic ferrites hampers their utilization, hindering enhancement in their EMW-absorption performance. Developing efficient strategies that improve the EMW-absorption performance of ferrite is highly desired but remains challenging. Here, an efficient strategy substituting Ba 2+ with rare earth La 3+ in W-type ferrite was proposed for the preparation of novel La-substituted ferrites (Ba 1− x La x Ni 2 Fe 15.4 O 27 ). The influences of La 3+ substitution on ferrites’ EMW-absorption performance and the dissipative mechanism toward EMW were systematically explored and discussed. La 3+ efficiently induced lattice defects, enhanced defect-induced polarization, and slightly reduced the ferrites’ bandgap, enhancing the dielectric properties of the ferrites. La 3+ also enhanced the ferromagnetic resonance loss and strengthened magnetic properties. These effects considerably improved the EMW-absorption performance of Ba 1− x La x Ni 2 Fe 15.4 O 27 compared with pure W-type ferrites. When x = 0.2, the best EMW-absorption performance was achieved with a minimum reflection loss of −55.6 dB and effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 3.44 GHz.

The naphthalene derivatives in coal tar naphthalene and anthracene oil fractions mostly contain short-chain alkyl groups. The enrichment of PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, mainly including naphthalene, anthracene, and pyrene) by the dealkylation of PAHs-rich fraction in coal tar was assumed to obtain high-purity PAHs by distillation. Based on this strategy, using 2-methylnaphthalene as the model compound, and the influences of catalysts with different supports (SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , ZSM-5, Beta, and HY) and different active metal components (Ni, Co, Mo, and W) prepared by the equivalent-volume impregnation method on the hydro-dealkylation performance of 2-methylnaphthalene under different technological conditions (temperature, H 2 initial pressure and reaction time) were systematically investigated in a pressurized batch reactor. The experimental results show that the conversion rate of 2-methylnaphthalene is 81.23 % and the selectivity of naphthalene is 64.22 % under conditions of 480 °C, 2 MPa, 4 h, and 6 W-HY. Loading 0.8 wt% La on the 6 W-HY catalyst can improve the dispersion of active metal component W on the support, but it does not change the skeleton structure of the support. In addition, one-dimensional diffusion is the most probable reaction mechanism for 2-methylnaphthalene, and the evolution profiles of naphthalene can be reflected by the reaction mechanism with a reaction order of n = 4 using the model fitting method.

The development of reusable heterogeneous catalysts with acid-base bifunctions employing low-cost oil as a raw material is critical for optimizing the biodiesel synthesis process. In the present study, Sr–La/wollastonite bifunctional catalysts with the different Sr/La atomic ratios are synthesized using a straightforward impregnation technique. The results show that the Sr 7 La 3 /wollastonite catalyst establishes a biodiesel yield of 95.35% upon initial use and 85.14% after the fifth cycle of reuse, under the transesterification conditions of a catalyst content of 8 wt.%, methanol to oil molar ratio of 15, reaction duration of 3 h, and reaction temperature of 150 °C. The biodiesel yield of 91.62% is obtained even after the addition of 5 wt.% oleic acid, and the catalyst maintains a high biodiesel yield (>80%) for three reused cycles, which illustrates the good resistance to free fatty acids (FFAs). Meanwhile, the process parameters for transesterification are optimized utilizing Response Surface Methodology combined with Box-Behnken Design (RSM-BBD). With a methanol to oil molar ratio of 17.7 and a catalyst content of 6.4 wt.%, biodiesel yield is 96.08% at 149 °C for 3 h. This study revealed the enormous potential of the Sr–La/wollastonite bifunctional catalyst in biodiesel production.

Semiconductor photocatalysis is an efficient technique to degrade the pollutants from wastewater. Herein, the doping of elements and the construction of heterojunctions are used to expand the visible light region and improve the transfer of photogenerated electrons-holes. The La-ZnO/BiOCl (LZB) heterojunction has been synthesized via the hydrothermal method. Furthermore, LZB-0.30 heterojunction is found to possess the optimal photodegradation efficiency of 100 % for RhB solution under the visible light within 45 min. Its degradation rate is ten times faster than that of La-ZnO, owing to positive development of photostimulated charge carriers. In addition, the results demonstrate that LZB-0.30, as an ideal photocatalyst, has great potential applications in the treatment of contaminants, providing a feasible strategy for environmental protection.

The peculiar physical properties of La x Ca 1- x MnO 3 , such as the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition and colossal magnetoresistance, become prominent near the metal-insulator transition temperature (T MI ). Precise control of the T MI is essential for promoting applications in fields like magnetic sensing and magnetic storage, and for advancing fundamental research and material development in emerging areas such as multifunctional heterostructures and complex strongly correlated electronic structures. In this study, La 0.7 Ca 0.3 MnO 3 , a composition known for its sharp metal-insulator transition, was selected as the research subject. Using the sol-gel method, we partially substituted the A-site La element with six rare earth elements (Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Er) to investigate the relationship between the T MI , structural parameters, and the type of doping elements. Our results indicate that for a given doping element, the T MI decreases with increasing doping amounts and shows a linear relationship with the average ionic radius of the A-site. Notably, the slope of the linear equation decreases linearly with the reduction in the ionic radius of the doping element. Based on these observations, we proposed a relational formula between the T MI and the ionic radius of the doped element, as well as the average ionic radius of the A-site. Additionally, our formula can estimate the T MI for Sr 2+ doping, which shifts the transition to higher temperatures. These findings reveal the relationship between T MI and crystal structure variations, offering a promising pathway for the design and regulation of T MI in lanthanum-based manganites.

Reduced energy barrier induced enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics can be achieved by implementing an efficient electrocatalyst. Herein, positive effect of lanthanum (La) single-atom modified hollow carbon sphere (HCS) support on OER activity of high-entropy sulfide (HES) material (FeCoNiCrCuAl)S has been reported. Briefly, La single-atom boosts the aggregation of electrons at adjacent Fe, Co, Ni, Cr, and Cu sites and dissipation of electrons at Al site in HES material, facilitating reconstruction of electronic structure and down-shifting their d-band center away from Fermi level, resulting in reduced adsorption energy of OER intermediates. As developed (FeCoNiCrCuAl)S@La-HCS depicts high OER performance with an overpotential of only 297 mV at 100 mA cm −2 , surpassing (FeCoNiCrCuAl)S@HCS (324 mV) and commercial RuO 2 catalyst (419 mV). This work provides an insight into the integration of single atom with high-entropy sulfide toward efficient oxygen evolution.

Due to the similar physicochemical properties of rare earth ions, their separation presents significant challenges. In this study, acidic phosphonic chitosan (aPCS) was prepared by modifying chitosan with phosphite and formaldehyde for improving the water solubility and complexing ability of rare earth ions in acidic aqueous solutions. DFT calculations revealed that its phosphonic groups serve as preferred reaction sites, forming stable bidentate complexes with rare earth cations. The complexation abilities of aPCS and phosphorylated chitosan (PCS) for La(III) were compared at various pHs by complexation–ultrafiltration. The results showed that aPCS achieved a 97% rejection for La(III), while 70% for PCS at pH 5 and P/RE 10. Furthermore, aPCS maintained higher rejection than PCS at pH of 3 to 7. In conclusion, aPCS demonstrates excellent potential for the selective extraction and purification of rare earth ions.

Lanthanum (La)-based hydroxide materials are considered promising candidates for phosphate removal, but their adsorption efficiency is often limited by the hydroxide (OH – ) release and slow mass transfer. In this study, we synthesized lanthanum hydroxyl carbonate supported onto magnetic porous biochar (La-FPBC 0.5 ) for advanced phosphate removal from actual secondary effluent of wastewater. La-FPBC 0.5 significantly enhanced phosphate removal by releasing more carbonate (CO 3 2– ) rather than hydroxy (–OH) during adsorption. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the absolute value of absorb adsorption energy for ion exchange in La-FPBC 0.5 is 4.48 eV, higher than that for ligand exchange (3.11 eV). The adsorption kinetic rate constant of La-FPBC 0.5 reached 1.7 × 10 -3 g/(mg −1 min), which is 1.8 times that of La(CO 3 )(OH). Furthermore, La-FPBC 0.5 removed up to 151.5 mg P/g of phosphate from wastewater, representing a 1.6-fold increase compared to La(CO 3 )(OH), surpassing not only commercial La-based materials but also most reported adsorbents. It maintained over 85 % of its phosphate adsorption capacity in the presence of anions or humic acid and showed effective adsorption across various water sources, including river, campus lake, and tap water, with a capacity exceeding 120 mg P/g. La-FPBC 0.5 also exhibited excellent stability, retaining 95 % of its capacity after five adsorption–desorption cycles. Notably, La-FPBC 0.5 treated approximately 1800 bed volumes of phosphate-containing wastewater to below 0.1 mg/L in a fixed-bed adsorption mode, with the recovered phosphate suitable for plant growth. These results suggest that La-FPBC 0.5 is an ideal candidate for phosphate removal in practical applications.

High-temperature thermistors face significant challenges in maintaining stability under extreme temperature conditions, meaning that stringent requirements for material selection and structural design are needed. To address this issue, negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor ceramics of Ba 2 ReNbO 6 (Re = La, Nd, and Sm) were successfully prepared using the solid-state reaction method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that Ba 2 ReNbO 6 (Re = La, Nd, and Sm) had an ordered double perovskite structure. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that as the difference in cationic radii between B′/B″ decreased, the porosity of the materials gradually increased. After Ba 2 ReNbO 6 (Re = La, Nd, and Sm) underwent aging tests at 1173 K for 720 h, the resistance drift rates were 1.33, 3.80, and 5.88%, respectively, and the aging mechanism was explained using cation diffusion theory. These ceramics exhibited typical NTC characteristics over a wide temperature range from 773 to 1473 K, with the degree of linearity exceeding 0.999 for all the samples.
