Uniform lithium (Li) deposition and stable interface between anode and electrolyte are crucial factors for realizing the practical application of Li metal anode. Herein, a homogeneous lithium fluoride (LiF) protective layer with many nano slits is constructed on the Li anode by a facile vacuum evaporation method. It can uniformize the Li ion flux at surface of anode via its homogeneity and suppress the violent side reaction between Li and electrolyte via its good compactness. The existence of nano-slits allows the penetration of electrolyte and thus providing sufficient lithium ions transmission channels. Therefore, such a homogeneous LiF layer effectively inhibits the growth of Li dendrites and alleviates the consumption of active Li metal, significantly improving the stability of Li anode during long-term cycles. With the LiF-protected Li anode, the full cell with LiFePO 4 cathode delivers 2.5 times longer lifespan and slower capacity attenuation than control cells. This work highlights significant roles of homogeneous protective layer in stabilizing Li anode and supplies new insights in the design of anode interphase for rechargeable lithium metal batteries (LMBs).

Li metal is considered as an ideal anode for Li-O 2 batteries because of its unbeatably theoretical specific capacity and low electrode potential. Unfortunately, the growth of Li dendritic and the sensitivity to electrolyte and O 2 hinder the practical applications of Li anode. Herein, AlF 3 as an electrolyte additive is firstly employed in a Li-O 2 battery, which can boost the formation of LiF@Al-Li@Al 2 O 3 -rich SEI film via in-situ spontaneous reactions of AlF 3 with Li anode in O 2 atmosphere. The generated SEI film contributes to inducing the homogeneous nucleation of Li and reducing the disgusting side reactions, which can suppress the growth of Li dendrite and improve the cyclability of Li anode. Benefiting from the rational design, both the Li-O 2 and the Li|Li symmetric batteries with AlF 3 electrolyte exhibit low overpotential and good cycling stability. We hope this work could provide a facile way to in-situ construct a stable SEI film to alleviate the uneven Li nucleation for Li-O 2 batteries.

Solid-state sodium batteries (SSBs) have attracted great interests due to their high energy density, good safety and cost-effectiveness. However, their cycling stability and rate capability remain limited. Here, we report a synergistic modification strategy of Li + bulk doping and carbon surface coating on the O3-type layered oxide NaCrO 2 (NCO). Li + doping enhances sodium ion diffusion coefficient (from 8.30*10 −11 cm 2 s −1 to 1.22 * 10 −10 cm 2 s −1 ) and improves structural reversibility during cycling. Meanwhile, the uniform carbon coating effectively inhibits the side reactions on the surface and reduces the electrode volume change to 0.7 %. The modified NCO-1.5 L@8 %P material shows excellent cycle stability and rate performance with conventional organic electrolyte (80.8 % retention after 1600 cycles, and 113.5 mAh g −1 at 10C current rate). Leveraging enhanced solid–solid interfacial compatibility, this material was further used to assemble NCO-1.5 L@8 %P/0.2 Mg-NZSP/Na solid state batteries. Under a high current rate of 2C, the SSB cycles stably with a capacity retention rate of 95.5 % after 200 cycles. When the current is increased to 5C/10C, a capacity of 102.7/96.1 mAh g −1 can still be obtained, effectively overcoming the rate capability limitations typically associated with conventional solid-state batteries. Through a comprehensive design strategy encompassing bulk-phase structural regulation, interfacial modification, and solid-state adaptation, this work elucidates the regulation mechanism by which synergistic modifications enhance electrochemical kinetics and interfacial stability.

Li-rich layered oxides exhibit promising potential applications in high-energy-density solid-state lithium metal batteries. Nevertheless, the strong oxidative oxygen species generate at high voltage, which poses great challenges to positive electrode-side interface stability. Herein, a robust in-situ polymerization gel polymer electrolyte with bifunctional additives is designed for interface modification. These additives, include lithium difluoro(oxalate) borate and LiPO 2 F 2 , regulate the Li + chemical environment in gel polymer electrolyte to enhance crosslink density without residual oligomer, which reduce gas generation and suppress contact loss, thus avoiding interfacial impedance divergence. Concurrently, the designed gel polymer electrolyte enables a wide electrochemical stability window (up to 4.7 V) and a high Li + transference number (0.82). Additionally, the additives induced F- and B-rich inorganic cathode-electrolyte interphase inhibits side reactions and oxygen/transition metal loss effectively, stabilizing the chemical interface. The as-constructed Li-rich layered oxides-based ceramic solid-state lithium metal batteries with gel polymer electrolyte interface modification exert a high discharge capacity of 276.5 mAh g -1 at 30 °C without external pressure, delivering a retention of 81.7% after 100 cycles at 25 mA g -1 during 2.0-4.7 V. This work provides a guideline for developing high-voltage solid-state lithium metal batteries via interfacial design.

Li ion batteries (LIBs) are nowadays widely used in wearable portable devices and electric vehicles, but the low specific capacity and unstable structural stability of commercial graphite anode have limited further performance improvement of the LIBs. Hence, it is needed to explore an anode material with better electrochemical performance. Metal-organic framework (MOF) has aroused much interest due to its good mechanical performance and controllable structure. However, most of MOFs are electrical insulators with low charge mobility and the thick bulk usually has long-range diffusion of Li + , resulting in rapid capacity decay at high current densities. In this work, we employ a bottom-up approach, in which the structure-directing agent was used to induce deprotonation of the carboxylic acid groups and non-covalent interactions, thus facilitating the anisotropic growth of hierarchical structures while suppressing unwanted 3D aggregation. Attributing to the thin thickness of MOF nanosheets, the transport channels of Li + have been greatly reduced, which was beneficial for the high-rate performance. Meanwhile, benefiting from in-plane charge delocalization and extended π-conjugation of 2D nanosheets, the electronic conductivity of MOF has been effectively improved. As a result, the 2D MOF-based anode materials displays an ultra-high reversible specific capacity of 1443 mAh g −1 with the capacity retention of almost 100 % after 100 cycles. Besides, it exhibits outstanding high-rate performance with 1000 mAh g −1 retaining at the high current density of 2000 mA g −1 , suggesting the good application value in LIBs.

Lithium-ion batteries with Ni-rich cathode and flammable carbonate electrolytes are breeding severe safety concerns which hinds their application in electric vehicles. Herein, by introducing the fluorobenzene (FB) with low-density and low-cost as a cosolvent and bridge solvents in triethyl phosphate (TEP)-based diluted high-concentration electrolytes (DHCEs) system, we design a non-flammable electrolyte with a special solvation structure containing internal-external flame retardants. This non-flammable electrolyte not only solves successfully the incompatibility problem of TEP-based electrolyte to the Li-metal anode (LMA) and the graphite (Gr) anode, but also ensures the stable cycling of Li||LiNi 0.7 Co 0 . 1 Mn 0 . 2 O 2 (86% capacity retention after 120 cycles) and Gr|| LiNi 0.7 Co 0 . 1 Mn 0 . 2 O 2 (75% capacity retention after 200 cycles) full cells. Such design opens up a new window for developing new electrolyte systems and building safer high-energy-density batteries.

To achieve the practical application of high energy density lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries, it is essential not only to enhance lithium-ion (Li + ) transport but also to effectively suppress the lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) shuttle effect, which remains challenge for the conventional commercial separators. In this study, a fluorinated covalent organic framework (Tp-TFAB COF) material with high selective permeability was employed to modify separators for Li–S batteries. The fluorinated Tp-TFAB COF layer can effectively enhance Li + conduction while providing electrostatic shielding against LiPSs, which were also confirmed by density functional theory calculations. As a result, Li–S batteries with Tp-TFAB/PP-modified separators retained 79.4 % of their initial capacity after 800 cycles at a 0.5C rate, with a low capacity decay of 0.026 % per cycle. Even at a high sulfur loading (7.3 mg cm −2 ), the batteries exhibited an impressive areal capacity of 5.83 mAh cm −2 . This work highlights the selective functionality of the fluorinated COFs nanoscopic channels, demonstrating its potential for applications in energy storage and beyond.

Layered lithium-rich oxides(LRO) materials have garnered significant attention due to their high reversible capacity and broad operating voltage range. However, the practical application of LRO materials is still restricted by the serious interfacial instability and surface structure reconstruction during long-term cyclic test. In this study, we use 2-(Trimethoxysilyl)ethyl methacrylate (TSM) as a multifunctional electrolyte additive to enhance the electrochemical performance of the Li/LRO cell. The capacity retention of the Li/LRO cell improves significantly from 67.2 % to 85.8 % after 100 cycles at 0.5C (1C = 300 mAh g -1 ) between 2.0 and 4.8 V with the addition of 2 % TSM. Under harsh conditions (with the addition of 1000 ppm H 2 O to the electrolytes), Li/LRO cell with TSM additives maintains the capacity retention of 82.5 % after 100 cycles, which is significantly higher than the cell without additives (38.0 %). Both theoretical calculations and experiments results demonstrate that TSM exhibits higher oxidation activity than the solvents, forming a uniform cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) on the LRO surface. The TSM-derived CEI layer effectively mitigates the interfacial parasitic reactions and prevents structural degradation of LRO. Furthermore, theoretical calculations and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) results confirm that TSM effectively eliminates water (H 2 O) and hydrofluoric acid (HF), mitigating their adverse effects.

Graphical The incorporation of the polyionic liquid additive [PBVIm]-TFSI in LiI-mediated Li-O 2 batteries enables the in situ formation of a protective layer on the Li anode. [PBVIm] + cations migrate to the Li anode, forming a cationic shield that promotes uniform Li + deposition. A [PBVIm][TFSI]-containing cell demonstrates a considerable reversibility and cycling stability. Redox mediators (RMs) have shown promise in enhancing Li-O 2 battery cycling stability by reducing overpotential. However, their application is hindered by the shuttle effect, leading to RM loss and Li anode corrosion. Here, we introduce a polyionic liquid, poly (1-Butyl-3-vinylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonylimine)) ([PBVIm]-TFSI) as an additive, showcasing a novel Li anode protection strategy for LiI-mediated Li-O 2 batteries. [PBVIm] + cations migrate to the Li anode, forming a protective cationic shield that promotes uniform Li + deposition. The addition of [PBVIm]-TFSI enhances the cycling stability, achieving 105 cycles at 200 mA⋅g −1 , compared to the cell with LiI which exhibited 38 cycles under the same conditions. Synchrotron X-ray tomography reveals the evolution of this protective layer, providing insights into its formation mechanism, in conjunction with XPS analysis. Our findings offer a new approach to Li anode protection in Li-O 2 batteries, emphasizing the critical role of interfacial engineering for battery performance.

Safety concerns associated with lithium batteries suggest the development of solid-state batteries as a promising variant. In this work, we doped a lithium boracite (Li4B7O12Cl) with Mg2+ to modify the Li+ sites and observed significant improvement in ionic conductivity by two orders of magnitude (from 3.03 × 10−7 S cm−1 to 2.81 × 10−5 S cm−1 at room temperature). We attribute the enhanced ion conductivity to the artificially induced Li vacancies resulting from Mg doping. The as-fabricated symmetrical battery (Li|Li3.6Mg0.2B7O12Cl|Li) exhibited good cycling performance with a stable voltage output even after 60 hours of cycling. The battery showed a coulombic efficiency retention of ∼99.7% after the cycling test. Our work demonstrates that Li4B7O12Cl is a superior solid electrolyte for solid-state batteries and the introduction of Li vacancies can be an efficient approach to greatly improve the ionic conductivity of other electrolytes.

Great efforts have been made to optimize Li metal anodes to improve energy density and cycle life. However, challenges remain in achieving uniform Li plating/stripping while maintaining stable interphase chemistry. Here, an engineered graphene aerogel with uniformly oriented microscale channels, and normalized lithiophilic binding sites as hosted Li anodes is reported. Vertically aligned graphene with oriented channels are constructed using a freeze-drying mechanism, and highly lithiophilic binding sites are optimized by adjusting functional oxygen anions on graphene. Based on the in-situ optical microscopy visualization and first-principles calculations, this graphene host design presents homogeneous Li-ion nucleation owing to its straight transport channels with ultrahigh lithiophilicity, resulting in greatly improved cycling stability. Also, the flat and compatible electrode–electrolyte interphase facilitates smooth Li growth, thereby suppressing the formation of dendrites. Notably, the symmetric cells using the new composite anodes exhibit superior electrochemical reversibility over 500 cycles, with the patternable LiFePO 4 //Li@graphene pouch cells displaying outstanding cycling performance. This graphene-hosted Li anode thus demonstrates great potential for Li batteries.

Lithium metal has been regarded as an ideal anode to meet the rapidly growing requirements on high energy density batteries , owing to their highest gravimetric capacity and their lowest redox potential . However, lithium metal batteries persistently suffer from serious issues, such as the unstable solid electrolyte layer and uncontrolled dendrite growth during plating/stripping, especially under high current density . Herein, we developed an innovative method to prepare dense LiAl 5 O 8 nanowires membrane and designed a LiAl 5 O 8 nanowires membrane/poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene)-based gel polymer composite electrolyte (LPH-GPE) to address these issues. On the interface of LPH-GPE and lithium anode, uniformly dispersed aluminum is in situ generated by reducing LiAl 5 O 8 nanowires, which brings both superlithiophilic sites and uniform lithium ion flux, and thus enables the lithium ion depositing in plates rather than forming sharp lithium dendrites . The solid-state lithium/lithium symmetric cells with LPH-GPE exhibit significantly improved lifespan at 0.5 mA cm − 2 and short-circuit does not occur even at current density up to 4 mA cm − 2 .
