Biphasic solvents have been widely studied for CO 2 capture due to their remarkable energy-saving potentiality. However, most existing biphasic solvents suffer from the high viscosity of their CO 2 -rich phase. This study proposed a novel low-viscous secondary amine-based nonaqueous biphasic solvent for CO 2 capture. With dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as the organic diluent and pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as the phase splitting agent, the secondary amine of 2-methyl-ethynolamine (MAE) was proved to be the optimal candidate for preparing the biphasic solvent. The MAE/DMSO/PMDETA (M/D/P) biphasic solvent could realize a high CO 2 loading of 0.84 mol mol −1 and the viscosity of its CO 2 -rich phase was only 8.87 mPa s, which was significantly lower than that of most reported biphasic solvents. The reaction mechanism analysis revealed that M/D/P absorbed CO 2 to form products of protonated amines, carbamate, and carbamic acid species. Since the products were polar and showed a stronger affinity to polar DMSO, while less polar PMDETA was isolated, thereby resulting in a phase change. Thermodynamics analysis showed that the M/D/P biphasic solvent could sharply cut down the sensible heat and latent heat during CO 2 desorption. Eventually, the total regeneration energy penalty of M/D/P was significantly reduced by 46.3% compared with the benchmark aqueous MEA solution.

The kinetics of CO 2 absorption in ethanolamine (MEA) + H 2 O + ethanol systems was investigated using stopped-flow apparatus. The first-order reaction rate constant ( k 0 ) values were tested with varying H 2 O and MEA concentrations. Transiting from the aqueous to non-aqueous solvents, the k 0 decreases and the reaction order for MEA shifts from 1.05 to 1.88. The zwitterion mechanism with the rate-limiting step of deprotonation was used to explore the role of water and its effect. Results showed that water could impact reactions through direct involvement and changing solvation environment. An improved kinetic model based on the zwitterion mechanism was obtained to indicate the quantitative influence of H 2 O concentration on the reaction kinetics of MEA + H 2 O + ethanol systems. The predicted values from the model well agreed to the experimental data with the average absolute relative difference of 6.73%. This study highlights the important effects of water on the reaction kinetics of CO 2 absorption into water-lean amine solutions.

An amine-based biphasic solvent is promising to cut down the energy penalty of CO2 capture. However, the high viscosity of the CO2-enriched solvent retards its industrial application. This work proposed a novel dual-stage phase separation process using a triethylenetetramine and 2-(diethylamino)ethanol blend as a biphasic solvent, which separates a certain proportion of CO2-enriched phase during CO2 absorption to reduce its viscosity. Experimental results showed that the proposed dual-stage phase separation process improved the phase separation behavior and effectively enhanced the absorption rate by 49% at 50 °C, when 50 vol % CO2-enriched phase was separated at 0.3 mol mol–1. Kinetic analysis showed that the absorption rate was mainly controlled by liquid-side mass transfer. The regeneration heat of the dual-stage phase separation process cut down the energy penalty by 33% compared with the monoethanolamine-based process. Compared with the conventional biphasic solvent-based process, the heat duty was further declined by 8%. The 1H nuclear magnetic resonance analysis showed that the dual-stage phase separation process could effectively control the generation of absorption products and intensify the interphase migration of tertiary amines.

Effective phase-change solvent system, n-methyl-2-hydroxyethylamine (MAE) + water-insoluble alcohol + H 2 O, was developed for CO 2 capture. First, a preliminary screening of several alcohols was carried out and showed that the MAE/n-butanol/water system had the potential to become an excellent phase change absorbent. Then, through phase change experiment, absorption experiment, desorption experiment, and theoretical energy consumption analysis, the MAE:n-butanol:water ratio of 3:4:3 possessed the most impressive CO 2 capture performance. Theoretical calculation of CO 2 desorption energy consumption showed that in comparison with 30 wt% monoethanolamine (MEA), 50% of reboiler heat duty can be reduced in case of the 3:4:3 system. In addition, equilibrium phase diagram of the three components showed that concentration of n-butanol significantly affected the phase separation. The two-phase species distribution after phase separation was determined using Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). This work also shows that temperature has influence on absorption and desorption performance. Finally, the absorbent stability test during absorption–desorption process confirmed that MAE/n-butanol/water absorbent had a great potential for capturing CO 2 .

Ultrafiltration membranes have shown remarkable potential in the purification of textile printing and dyeing wastewater. However, ultrafiltration membranes have some disadvantages in wastewater treatment , such as membrane fouling and trade-off effect. Hence, a novel polysulfone (PSF)-reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-zinc oxide (ZnO) composite conductive ultrafiltration membrane was prepared via the simple and green method. The combination of conductive ultrafiltration membrane and external electric field could treat dye wastewater. The conductive rGO/ZnO/PSF membranes have high water flux (296 L m −2 h −1 Bar −1 ) and favorable removal rates (>90%) for Congo Red (CR), Methyl Orange (MO), and Methylene Blue (MB). Besides, rGO/ZnO/PSF membrane also showed excellent antifouling ability, which had a flux recovery rate of 93% after filtration of bovine serum albumin (BSA) under applied electric field. Due to the electrocatalytic cleaning, rGO/ZnO/PSF membrane exhibited a 90% flux recovery after filtering the dye. The rGO/ZnO/PSF membrane has good separation efficiency, electrocatalytic stability, and fouling resistance, and can effectively solve the purification of textile printing and dyeing.

In this study, using surfactant monoethanolamine (MEA), zinc oxide (ZnO)-MEA humidity sensor based on ZnO was successfully prepared by hydrothermal method. MEA makes the surface of the ZnO-MEA have more oxygen vacancy and hydrophilic functional groups, which improves the performance of ZnO humidity sensor. ZnO-MEA achieved a change of 4 orders of magnitude at room temperature in the relative humidity (RH) from 11% to 95%, and it shows better linearity, shorter response/recovery time (20 s/15.9 s), smaller humidity lag and long-term stability. In addition, the distribution of ZnO-MEA particles is more uniform and provides more active sites for adsorption of water molecules to enhance humidity sensing performance.

Circularly polarized light (CPL) detection and polarization state recognition are required for a wide range of applications. Conventional polarization detection with optical components causes difficulties for miniaturization and integration. An effective design strategy is proposed for direct CPL detection with chiral material. Here, we realized direct CPL detection based on the combination of chiral photonic cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) and ultraviolet-sensitive ZnO photoconductive material. The CNC layer deposited by evaporation-induced self-assembly established the left-handed chiral nematic structure with a photonic bandgap (PBG) to recognize left-handed CPL (LCPL) and right-handed CPL (RCPL) at specific wavelengths. The PBG of CNC layer has been modulated by the adjustment of chiral nematic pitch to match the semiconductor bandgap of ZnO film in ultraviolet region. The photocurrents under RCPL and LCPL are 2.23 × 10−6A and 1.77 × 10−6A respectively and the anisotropy factor Δgpcof 0.23 is acquired for the CPL detection based on the chiral photonic CNC. This design provides a new approach to the detection of CPL polarization state with competitive performance. Keywords:circularly polarization light detection;cellulose nanocrystal;ZnO photoconduction

A novel hybrid absorbent by combining functionalized ionic liquid (IL) 1-(3-aminopropyl)-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [Apmim][BF 4 ] with alkanolamines (monoethanolamine (MEA) and N, N-diethylethanolamine (DEEA)) was proposed for CO 2 capture. By means of a high-speed camera, the capacity and mass transfer performance of CO 2 absorption into the hybrid absorbent were investigated experimentally in microchannel over a wide range of concentration ratios (IL: amine) at the room temperature and atmosphere pressure. Three flow patterns were observed: Taylor-bubbly flow, Taylor flow and Taylor-annular flow. The results show that the CO 2 loading and mass transfer coefficient of alkanolamine solution could be improved remarkably by the addition of an appropriate amount of [Apmim][BF 4 ]. The molar ratio 3:2 of IL to amine was found to be optimal for CO 2 loading and mass transfer. Furthermore, the influences of gas and liquid flow rates on mass transfer were studied, and a new predicting correlation for CO 2 volumetric mass transfer coefficient was proposed.

Aqueous amine-based CO2 capture is considered as the most mature and applicable CO2 capture method for post-combustion. With the CO2 capture process running for a long time, the degradation of aqueous amine-based is inevitable, and the degradation products are numerous and complicated. Therefore, the performance evaluation of aqueous amine solutions containing degradation products is crucial in both guiding the selective removal of degradation products and maintaining or reducing of the solution cyclic utilization rate. Unfortunately, a simple and effective way to increase the economic feasibility of the CO2 capture process after accumulated degradation products remains absent, and little attention has been paid to the real effect of degradation products on the CO2 capture performance in aqueous amine solutions. In this work, we propose a simple method to evaluate the performance and regeneration energy of aqueous monoethanolamine (MEA) solutions accumulating single degradation products based on the fast-bubbling reactor. Using this method, it is possible to quickly determine the key degradation products that affect the performance of aqueous MEA solutions so as to achieving clearer optimization, more direct purification, and a reduced solution cyclic utilization rate.

To advance carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) capture technology by simultaneously reducing the energy penalty and mitigating equipment corrosion, a novel nonaqueous biphasic solvent comprising monoethanolamine (MEA), 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and N,N,N',N'',N''- pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) was proposed for CO 2 capture in this study. The performance testing results demonstrated that the MEA-AMP-DMSO-PMDETA (M-A-D-P) biphasic solvent with the optimal composition could realize a high CO 2 loading of 0.88 mol·mol −1 and that its rich phase stored 95.3% of the absorbed CO 2 but constituted only 56.8% of the total volume. 13 C NMR analysis and quantum chemical calculations showed that both MEA and AMP could absorb CO 2 to form carbamate and carbamic acid species, with the latter being the dominant reaction product. Since the products were polar and could form hydrogen bonds with polar DMSO, the two had satisfactory mutual solubility, while less polar PMDETA was isolated, thereby leading to a phase change. After phase separation, only the CO 2 -rich phase required regeneration. Consequently, M-A-D-P significantly reduced the sensible heat and vaporization heat by 63.1% and 94.8%, respectively, compared to the benchmark MEA solution. Moreover, the results of the corrosion test demonstrated that M-A-D-P was virtually noncorrosive to carbon steel; thus, it clearly outperformed the MEA solution. Therefore, the novel M-A-D-P biphasic solvent may be a promising candidate for advancing energy-efficient and noncorrosive CO 2 capture.

The huge energy consumption of rich amine solution regeneration severely restricts the large-scale application and promotion of the CO2 capture process by the amine method. In order to reduce the operating energy consumption during the CO2 capture process using amines, especially the energy consumption of absorbent regeneration, zeolite β/SBA-15 (BS) has been synthesized in this work using the hydrothermal method with zeolite beta (β) as the silicon source; β was used to prepare the novel Zr@BS and Fe–Zr@BS catalysts for amine regeneration. Experiments for CO2 stripping were performed at 370.15 K using amine solvent [monoethanolamine (MEA)] with an initial CO2 loading of 0.50 mol CO2/mol amine. Additionally, all the materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, N2 adsorption–desorption experiment, ammonia temperature-programmed desorption, and pyridine adsorption infrared spectroscopy. Also, the catalytic CO2 desorption performances of seven different catalysts (β, SBA-15, three BS catalysts, Zr@BS, and Fe–Zr@BS) were investigated and assessed from the aspects of the cyclic capacity, desorption rate, and energy consumption. Experimental results indicated that the Fe–Zr@BS catalysts exhibited superior catalytic behaviors than other catalysts studied in this work, improving the desorption factor of MEA solution by 212% and bringing down the energy heat by 33% compared with 5 M MEA solution without catalysts. Furthermore, the Fe–Zr@BS catalysts show good stability and easy regeneration and do not influence absorption performance of the amine solution. Moreover, the possible catalytic mechanism for amine regeneration was proposed, and the stability of the material in terms of the structure of the material and the regeneration heat duty were also studied.
