AgI@MIL-101(Fe) photocatalyst was fabricated via in-situ precipitation method. • The photocatalyst achieved 95.25% degradation efficiency of OTC within 180 min. • The photocatalyst exhibited excellent practical applicability in real water samples. • Z-scheme heterojunction mechanism and degradation pathway were elucidated. Owing to their extensive and long-term application as well as poor degradability, antibiotics are inevitably persistent in aquatic environments due to their extensive and long-term use as well as heir difficulty in degradation. The development of efficient photocatalysts is therefore of crucial significance in environmental purification. In this study, a Z-scheme MIL-101(Fe) heterojunction photocatalyst was rationally designed and fabricated via a combined solvothermal and in-situ precipitation methods for the efficient removal of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC), where MIL-101(Fe) is a typical member of the metal-organic framework (MOF) family. A series of characterization methods were employed to systematically observe the morphology and microstructure, optical properties, and photocatalytic performance of the as-prepared photocatalyst. The AgI@MIL-101(Fe) nanocomposites achieved an OTC degradation efficiency of 95.25% within 180 min under visible-light irradiation, demonstrating superior photocatalytic activity compared to a single-component counterparts. Structural characterizations results indicated that AgI formed a tight interface contact with MIL-101(Fe), which provided an effective structural foundation for theheterojunction construction. AgI particles were well dispersed on MIL-101(Fe), effectively mitigating their aggregation and thus creating abundant light absorption and reaction sites for photocatalytic reactions. Photoelectrochemical measurements further demonstrated that the nanocomposite possessed strong light absorption ability and high separation efficiency for photogenerated carriers. The as-prepared photocatalyst also exhibited excellent practical applicability in the treatment of actual water samples from Baiyangdian Lake. Five cycles of experiments indicated that its outstanding structural and catalytic stability. Mechanistic investigations identified superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ) as the primary active factors responsible for OTC degradation. Finally, the typical Z-scheme heterojunction mechanism and degradation pathway of OTC were finally proposed. This work provides a new design strategy and practical reference for the development of high-performance photocatalysts targeting the efficient removal of OTC and other antibiotics from aquatic environments. Construct TiO 2 @MIL-101-Fe S-scheme via impregnation in situ hydrolysis. • Hierarchically distributed TiO 2 maximizes interfacial contact. • Achieves 13.91% cyclohexane conversion and retains high activity after five cycles. • Interfacial fields drive spatial charge separation and preserve redox potentials. • Hierarchical confinement and pore-mouth anchoring enable selective C H activation. The selective photocatalytic oxidation of cyclohexane is a sustainable and environmentally friendly route for KA-oil production, yet it remains limited by low conversion, moderate selectivity, and inefficient charge utilization. This study employed an in-situ TBOT hydrolysis strategy to synthesize a TiO 2 @MIL-101-Fe S-scheme heterojunction with hierarchically distributed TiO 2 nanodomains within the MOF pores, at pore mouths, and on the external surface. This spatially engineered heterostructure enhances photogenerated carrier separation, stabilizes the interface, and improves cyclohexane oxidation efficiency and KA-oil selectivity. The optimized 50 wt% composite material achieved a cyclohexane conversion rate of 14.3%, which was 2.17 times that of the original MIL-101-Fe material. Meanwhile, it still maintained a cyclohexane conversion rate of up to 13.9% and excellent catalytic activity after five cycles. Steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence, electrochemical impedance, and transient photocurrent measurements reveal accelerated charge separation and prolonged carrier lifetime, enabled by an S-scheme heterojunction with a built-in interfacial electric field. Radical trapping and ESR studies indicate that photogenerated holes and electrons dominate C H activation, with reactive oxygen species contributing synergistically. DFT calculations confirm directional electron transfer and preserved high redox potentials. This work highlights spatially confined S-scheme heterojunctions as a general strategy to enhance photocatalytic efficiency, selectivity, and stability, offering a promising avenue for solar-driven hydrocarbon oxidation. Interfacial engineering in heterostructure photocatalysts is crucial for efficient charge migration, yet achieving rational and controllable interface design remains a major challenge. In this work, SnIn 4 S 8 nanosheets were in situ grown on the octahedral surface of MIL-101(Cr) to leverage the Lewis acid-base properties of Cr and S, thereby enabling the controlled construction of an ion-coordinated interface. The resulting MIL-101(Cr)@SnIn 4 S 8 heterojunction enabled efficient capture and conversion of CO 2 and H 2 O. Furthermore, the Lewis acid-base coordination induces interfacial electron density redistribution, generating a built-in electric field that drives the formation of an S-scheme heterojunction between MIL-101(Cr) and SnIn 4 S 8 , while simultaneously preserving high‑energy photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Consequently, MIL-101(Cr)@SnIn 4 S 8 exhibited superior CO 2 photoreduction performance with H 2 O in the gas-solid phase, delivering a CO evolution rate of 26.9 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 . This work provides a viable strategy for interfacial engineering and demonstrates the application potential of S-scheme heterojunctions in photocatalytic reactions.

As volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a major group of air pollutants, development of materials for efficient adsorption and removal of VOCs is of great significance in both environmental and analytical sciences. Here we report metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) MIL-101 for the effective adsorption of VOCs at atmospheric pressure. A simple device was designed for quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and six VOCs with various functional groups and polarities, i.e., n-hexane, toluene, methanol, butanone, dichloromethane, and n-butylamine, were chosen as targets to probe the adsorption properties of MIL-101. The developed device allows measurement of the adsorption isotherms and monitoring of the dynamic process for the adsorption of VOCs on MOFs, and also provides a useful tool for characterization of MOFs. The adsorption isotherms of the VOCs on MIL-101 followed the Dubinin–Astakhov equation with the characteristic energy from 5.70 (methanol) to 9.13 kJ mol–1 (n-butylamine), Astakhov exponent from 0.50 (n-butylamine) to 3.03 (n-hexane), and the limiting adsorption capacity from 0.08 (n-hexane) to 12.8 (n-butylamine) mmol g–1. MIL-101 exhibited the strongest affinity to n-butylamine, but the weakest affinity to n-hexane. The determined Astakhov exponents and the isosteric heats of adsorption revealed the energetic heterogeneity of MIL-101. MIL-101 showed the most energetically homogeneous for n-hexane, but the most energetically heterogeneous for n-butylamine. The dynamic process of adsorption monitored by the QCM system demonstrated the distribution of the sorption sites within MIL-101. The metal sites within the MIL-101 were vital in adsorption process. MIL-101 gave much higher affinity and bigger adsorption capacity to VOCs than activated carbon, offering great potential for real applications in the adsorption and removal of VOCs.

In recent years, the quality and safety issues of Chinese medicinal herbs have received great attention worldwide. Thereinto, heavy metal contamination has been one of the most serious concerns. Compared to the wide research in the analysis of heavy metals in medicinal herbs, the studies on the removal of heavy metals are relatively limited. In this study, polyethylene glycol functionalized Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-101(Cr) (Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-101(Cr)@PEG) was designed and synthesized to remove heavy metals from the decoction of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. The in-house fabricated Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-101(Cr)@PEG was characterized by a porous structure and a large specific surface area. Then, the efficiency of the material for the removal of five heavy metals was tested under optimal adsorption conditions. Meanwhile, the content of Senkyunolide A, Senkyunolide I, and Ferulic acid, the solid content, and the HPLC fingerprints similarity were used as the quality monitoring indicators of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort decoction before and after the heavy metal removal. Results showed that the magnetic nanomaterial had excellent removal efficiency for As 5+ (81.4 %), Cd 2+ (88.19 %), and Pb 2+ (83.79 %) and certain removal efficiency for Ni 2+ (51.59 %) and Zn 2+ (55.4 %) under the spiked concentration of 50 μg/mL. The content of Senkyunolide A, Senkyunolide I, and Ferulic acid were decreased by less than 8.00 % after the removal of heavy metals. Besides, the loss rate of solid content was only 0.18 %, and the fingerprints similarity was over 99.9 %. The results indicated that Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-101(Cr)@PEG could efficiently and selectively remove heavy metals from Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort without affecting its effective components. Due to the advantages of low-cost, simple manipulation, and good efficiency, the material can be recommended for heavy metals removal from the aqueous solutions of medicinal herbs, providing a new and promising application for the removal of exogenous contaminants in medicinal herbs.

Efficient removal and recovery of phosphorus (P) from wastewater is critical for addressing both phosphate rock depletion and eutrophication-related deterioration of surface water quality. Herein, we present a promising platform approach integrating cerium-doped NH2-MIL-101(Fe) with melamine sponge (MS) scaffolds for rapid and high-efficiency recovery of P from wastewater. The as-prepared MIL-101@sponge composites (denoted as MIL-101@CS, MIL-101@PVDF, and MIL-101@SDBS, respectively) are featured by flexibility and stability according to many characterization techniques. Batch adsorption of P over these composite adsorbents indicates that these MIL-101@sponge composites exhibit a maximum adsorption capacity (e.g., 253.66 mg g–1 for MIL-101@CS) at the optimum pH of 6.0 and that adsorption equilibrium can be attained within 150 min and well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. In addition, these composites show a high selectivity for P over carbonate and other common monovalent anions under environmentally relevant conditions. The results of desorption and recycling tests indicate that MIL-101@CS retains good adsorption and desorption efficiency even in a much short operating time (i.e., 5 min), which allows such a composite to be applied in enriching and recovering P efficiently from wastewater via a rapid adsorption/desorption operation. Moreover, the high feasibility of MIL-101@CS in actual scenarios was validated by efficiently enriching the P from a sludge dewatering liquid. Furthermore, the main mechanisms for P adsorption are elucidated from various microstructural characterizations. Overall, this work presents a strategy of integrating MIL-101 with sponge scaffolds for rapidly and efficiently recovering P from wastewater, which may be potentially extended to the recovery of other value-added elements of interest from waste streams.

High capacity adsorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in high humidity environment is a crux but challenge for atmospheric VOCs governance. In this work, tubular carbonized N-doped polymers (TCNP) were implanted into MIL-101 via N-Cr-O interface self-assembly, enabling high adsorption for vapor toluene in high humidity. Through mechanical ball milling and carbonization, Cr ions were preloaded on TCNP to form highly dispersed 3–5 nm Cr-N crystallite as anchors for growing MIL-101(Cr/Cu). Newly constructed smaller micropores of 6.8 Å with aromatic rings/N sites at the interface and doped Cu ions in MOF framework synergistically enhanced π-π conjugation and electrostatic interaction for C 7 H 8 molecules. This endowed [TCNP 5 /MIL(Cr/Cu)] N-Cr 2.9 times higher toluene uptake (6.34 mmol/g) at low vapor pressure ( P / P 0 = 0.02) and 1.9 times diffusivity under high humidity (60% RH) than that of MIL-101(Cr) at 298 K. The adsorption breakthrough curves for vaporous toluene showed that TCNP@MIL-101(Cr/Cu) exhibited outstandingly higher adsorption equilibrium capacity (2.7 mmol/g) under 80% RH, corresponding to approximately 2–10 times than those of reported state-of-the-art adsorbents under similar conditions. This study provided a novel interface construction strategy for hydrophobic MOF composites, which supplied deeper understanding for VOCs adsorption and promoted MOFs practical application in VOCs capture under humid environment.

5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is considered a promising platform chemical, from which numerous chemicals can be produced. Hence, developing an efficient catalytic system to convert glucose into HMF has drawn considerable attention. In this study, a series of Lewis acidic Sn–Cr bimetallic metal–organic frameworks, MIL-101(Cr, Sn), with different Sn ion loading were synthesized hydrothermally using acetic acid as the mineralizer and water as the solvent. The resulting MIL-101(Cr, Sn) was systematically analyzed as a catalyst for the conversion of sugar to HMF. Moreover, the effects exerted by various reaction parameters on HMF yield and selectivity were investigated. With glucose as the substrate and 0.5-wt% H 2 SO 4 as a catalyst, an 85.75% glucose conversion with 22.64% HMF yield and 26.41% selectivity was achieved. Meanwhile, these parameters were improved via addition of MIL-101(Cr, Sn)-0.1. That is, glucose conversion, HMF yield, and selectivity were increased to 86.36%, 60.75%, and 70.35%, respectively, when using MIL-101(Cr, Sn)-0.1 and H 2 SO 4 as the catalyst under the same reaction conditions. The MIL-101(Cr, Sn) structure enabled high stability of the catalyst in aqueous solutions with different pH values, while improving its thermal stability. Moreover, the catalyst could be reused several times despite a slight reduction in its catalytic activity . The current results illustrate that MIL-101(Cr, Sn) is an excellent acid and sustainable catalyst for the production of HMF from fructose, glucose, and starch .

A novel CMC/PVA/MIL-101(Cr) aerogel bead (CPMB) was prepared by the green polymer matrix of CMC and PVA and nanofiller of MIL-101(Cr) through the simple complexing with the ionic crosslinking agent, which could be an adsorptive platform for effectively capturing of Co(II) and Ni(II) ions in wastewater. The morphology, surface chemistry, and textural characteristics were investigated by varied characterization methods to reveal behind mechanisms for the dissimilarity in adsorption performance. The optimal modifying dosage of MIL-101(Cr) nanoparticles was determined to form an optimal tailored network with abundant MIL-101 clusters and hydroxyl/carboxyl groups inside the network that greatly achieved the most accessible heavy metals to CPMB-1. Meanwhile, the influences of temperature, adsorption dosage, pH, and interfering cations on the capacity of CPMB-1 were investigated, while adsorption behaviors of adsorbents were also explored. Analytic results indicated that the capture of two targeted ions by CPMB-1 could favorably comply with the Pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich isothermal adsorption model. The maximum adsorption capacities of two targeted ions calculated by data were 180.3 mg/g and 261.9 mg/g, respectively. According to the results of XPS and FTIR analysis, the electrostatic attraction and chelating effect could be the main mechanisms for improved performance, and contributing groups were the hydroxyl and carboxylic acid introduced into CPMB-1. Moreover, the as-designed CPMB-1 exhibited excellent recyclability and stability in eight cycles. The encouraging results exhibited by CPMB-1 might bring a new idea for integrating multiple functionalities of MOFs and biomass components for designing functional composites for efficient remediations of wastewater.

In this paper, MIL-101(Fe) and MoS 2 composites (MIL-101(Fe)/MoS 2 ) were synthesized using a facile solvothermal method . As a new degradation system, the synthesized composites were investigated using persulfate (PS) activation based on visible light (Vis). To establish the superiority of a heterogeneous photochemical catalysis system, the MIL-101(Fe)/MoS 2 was used as the catalyst in the presence of Na 2 S 2 O 8 with visible light irradiation. In the system mentioned, the MIL-101(Fe)/MoS 2 catalyst presented a much better catalytic ability than that of either a single photocatalysis or chemocatalysis system. The better catalytic ability suggests that the MIL-101(Fe)/MoS 2 catalyst was capable of effectively integrating photocatalysis and chemocatalysis leading to the highest degradation efficiency of 85% in 40 min with tetracycline as the target pollutant. The catalytic system MIL-101(Fe)/MoS 2 /PS/Vis degraded TC pollutant by forming species of O 2 ‾, 1 O 2 , hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and sulfate radicals (•SO 4 ‾) to degrade TC. Furthermore, the MIL-101(Fe)/MoS 2 catalyst displayed better catalytic performance compared to those materials that were previously reported, as verified by the good stability (reached 80% after three cycles) and the high TC degradation rate (85%) of the currently developed material. This system may be applicable to the degradation of TC and other challenging organic pollutants .

The Cu-based catalysts have been widely employed in the hydrogenation of CO 2 -derived ethylene carbonate (EC) to ethylene glycol (EG) and other derivatives, but still suffered from some problems such as unsatisfactory selectivity and catalyst stability. Herein, a Cu@MIL-101 catalyst was prepared via a two-solvent method to anchor copper (Cu) nanoparticles into the MIL-101 metal organic frameworks, which exhibited superior catalytic performance with ∼100% conversion, 2-hydroxyethyl formate (2-HEF) selectivity of 82% at 160°C, or EG selectivity of ∼92% at 180°C. The characterization results showed that the Cu 0 and Cr 3+ species play a key role on the dissociation of H 2 and activation of C-O and C=O bonds in the esters, and thus exhibited an excellent catalytic performance of the EC hydrogenation. In addition, the strong interaction between Cu 0 species and unsaturated coordination Cr 3+ species in the MIL-101 framework resulted in the high stability. Since the product of methanol was not generated on the Cu@MIL-101 catalyst, it is valuable to produce 2-HEF by controlling the temperature of 160°C in the EC hydrogenation rection. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

MIL-based molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) nanocomposites were successfully synthesized through a simple and versatile stirring auxiliary encapsulation method. MIP as a carrier has been applied to the highly efficient selective recognition and sustained release of doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX). The adsorption mechanism and release behavior of[email protected]in vitro were also discussed. Adsorption studies showed that MIP using DOX as template had specific selectivity to DOX, and its optimal drug loading efficiency reached 97.99%. The adsorption isotherm accorded with Freundlich models. The cumulative release curve showed that at the conditions of pH 5.5 and 7.4, the nanomaterials have a slow-release effect on the release of DOX. In addition, the cytotoxicity and bioactivity of MIP nanoparticles on HepG2 and HL-7702 cell lines measured by MTT assay also proved their low toxicity and biological activity. The cell activity of HepG2 and HL-7702 incubated with MIP for 24 h was 69.9% and 76.07%, respectively. These results collectively illustrated that the MIP nano-materials synthesized in this study can be efficiently employed to the drug delivery systems. Keywords:MIP;nanocomposites;drug delivery;DOX;controlled release
