The Fenton reaction is renowned for its high efficiency and well-established operational framework in medicinal chemistry, and environmental remediation. In this study, a novel pH-adaptive Fenton-like catalyst was developed by anchoring Fe-doped molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) nanoparticles onto reed straw cellulose biochar via a two-step calcination process, yielding a series of composites designated as Fe x @Mo 2 C/BC (x = 1, 2, 3). Among these, the Fe 1 @Mo 2 C/BC catalyst demonstrated exceptional performance in the presence of H 2 O 2 , achieving complete degradation (100 %) of 20 mg/L acetaminophen (ACE) within 30 min. Notably, the catalyst maintained high degradation efficiency across a wide pH range (pH 2–10), retaining 74.27 % activity after four reuse cycles, underscoring its robustness and adaptability. Mechanistic investigations revealed that Mo 2 C played a pivotal role in promoting the reduction of Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ , thereby sustaining the Fenton-like catalytic cycle. Simultaneously, the in situ generation of H + helped preserve an acidic microenvironment, effectively suppressing the precipitation of inactive Fe(OH) 3 species. The integration of biochar further enhanced the structural stability of the catalyst and significantly reduced iron ion leaching. The Quenching experiments identified superoxide radicals (O 2 •- ) as the primary reactive oxygen species responsible for ACE degradation. Additionally, the active sites and degradation pathways of ACE were elucidated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations and high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis. Overall, this work presents a compelling strategy for designing high-efficiency, pH-tolerant Fenton-like catalysts, offering both theoretical insights and practical solutions for wastewater treatment and the valorization of agricultural biomass.

Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) is considered one of the most cost-effective methods for producing green hydrogen. However, the performance of AEMWE is still restrained by the slow reaction kinetics and poor ion/electron transport of catalysts. Herein, inspired by frogspawn, Mo2C nanoparticles coupled with Ni were in situ embedded into a N-doped porous carbon nanofiber network (Mo2C/NCNTs@Ni) by chemical crosslinking electrospinning combined with carbonization. The unique bionic structure can guarantee favorable overall structural flexibility and fast ion/electron transport kinetics. As a result of the robust hydrogen binding energy of Mo2C, as well as the synergistic impact between Ni and Mo2C nanoparticles and the conductive network resembling frogspawn, the catalyst developed demonstrates excellent performance in both the HER and OER. When employed as a bifunctional catalyst in water electrolysis, Mo2C/NCNTs@Ni delivers overpotentials of 155 mV and 320 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for the HER and OER, respectively. In addition, the Mo2C/NCNTs@Ni also displays excellent long-term durability during a continuous operation test under different currents for 50 h. The assembled AEMWE electrolyzers with Mo2C/NCNTs@Ni as both the anode and cathode can achieve a current density of 82.5 mA cm−2 at 1.99 V, indicating great potential for industrial water splitting. These results give an insight for the development of advanced bifunctional electrocatalysts for the next generation of green and efficient H2 production by water electrolysis.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are considered the most efficient technology for the direct conversion of hydrocarbons to electrical energy. Although the commonly used Ni/YSZ cermet materials in SOFCs show excellent electrocatalytic properties in H 2 fuel, they suffer from carbon deposition problem when hydrocarbon fuels are used. In this work, we study the use of Ni 0 · 05 Ru 0.05 -Mo 2 C with a porous nanorod-shaped morphology as an internal reforming catalyst layer for methane-fueled SOFCs to solve the degradation of cell performance due to carbon deposition. The electrochemical performance and coking tolerance of two types of cells with and without the catalyst layer were systematically studied using methane and hydrogen as fuels. With the catalyst layer, the single cell using methane as fuel exhibits an improvement in peak power density by 24%, increasing from 297 to 367 mW cm −2 and there was no diffusion barrier for fuel gases within the cell. Furthermore, the cell can stably run for 100 h in methane at 700 °C. The improvement of electrochemical performance is attributed to the synergistic effect of Ni and Ru sites anchored on the porous Mo 2 C nanorods catalyst based on strong metal-support interactions, promoting the effective catalytic conversion of CH 4 to CO and H 2 . This study demonstrates that the integration of a catalyst layer for internal reforming is an effective strategy for the direct use of methane in SOFCs.

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a pivotal half-reaction in electrocatalytic water splitting and metal-air batteries. Non-precious metal heterointerface materials provide significant advantages in enhancing OER activity while reducing costs; however, effective engineering of built-in electric fields (BIEFs) at multi-phase heterointerfaces remains a major challenge. Herein, we report a novel FeNi/Mo₂C@NC multi-phase heterointerface catalyst synthesized via a low-temperature solution combustion method followed by high-temperature annealing. The catalyst exhibits a heterointerface between FeNi and Mo 2 C, while nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) coating interacts further with FeNi and Mo 2 C to form Mott-Schottky heterointerfaces and generate multiple BIEFs that promote charge separation, optimize Fermi levels and fine-tune d-band centers, thereby modifying the adsorption behavior of oxygen-containing intermediates during the OER process. This strategy drives the directional migration of charge carriers along multiple pathways, resulting in rapid charge transfer, enhanced conductivity, and a synergistic improvement in OER performance. The FeNi/Mo 2 C@NC catalyst shows exceptional OER activity, with a low overpotential of 242 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 68 mV dec −1 derived from steady-state chronoamperometry testing, and excellent catalytic stability over 200 h. This study underscores the importance of engineering multi-phase heterointerfaces and multiple BIEFs to enhance the OER performance of catalysts.

Developing cost-effective and remarkable electrocatalysts toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performs excelling role in boosting the hydrogen energy application . Herein, a novel in-situ one-pot strategy is developed for the first time to synthesize molybdenum carbide nanoparticles (Mo 2 C NPs) incorporated on nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) co-doped stereotaxically carbon (SC). The optimized Mo 2 C NPs/N, P–SC–800 electrocatalyst exhibits lower overpotentials of 131 and 287 mV for HER and OER to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH medium with smaller Tafel slopes of 58.9 and 74.4 mV/dec, respectively. In addition, an electrolyzer using Mo 2 C NPs/N, P–SC–800 electrode as cathode and anode delivers a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a small voltage of 1.64 V for overall water splitting. The excellent water splitting performance could be ascribed to optimum Mo 2 C NPs for more accessible active sites, highly active N, P-SC networks for accelerated electron transfers , and synergetic effect between Mo 2 C NPs and N, P-SC networks. The N, P-SC network not only enhances the overall dispersion of Mo 2 C NPs but also contributes numerous electroactive edges to enhance the performance of HER, OER, and overall water splitting activity. This research work explores the in-situ one-step strategies of advanced, cost-effective, and non-precious metal electrocatalysts for efficient water splitting and motivates the consideration of a novel class of heteroatom doped stereotaxically carbon nanocomposites for sustainable energy production.

While alkaline water electrolysis represents a highly promising and sustainable pathway for hydrogen production, its widespread application is hindered by the sluggish kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to a large energy barrier for water dissociation. In this work, a heterogeneous electrocatalyst of Ru/MoC-Mo 2 C@NC was prepared by uniformly embedding ruthenium nanoparticles within a nitrogen-doped carbon matrix hosting MoC-Mo 2 C heterojunctions. (MoC-Mo 2 C@NC). Electrochemical experimental results demonstrate the remarkably boosted HER catalytic performance of Ru/MoC-Mo 2 C@NC compared with Ru/NC, Ru/MoC@NC and Ru/Mo 2 C@NC by presenting the lowest overpotential of 18.5 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and Tafel slope of 61.71 mV·dec −1 , along with superior intrinsic activity and mass specific activity. Density-functional theory calculations further reveal that the enhanced electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) between Ru sites and the MoC-Mo 2 C@NC support in Ru/MoC-Mo 2 C@NC induces significant charge redistribution and interface charge accumulation in Ru/MoC-Mo 2 C@NC, thereby optimizing water dissociation energy barrier and hydrogen adsorption free energy (ΔG H∗ ). Meanwhile, this reinforced EMSI facilitates efficient reverse hydrogen spillover at the Ru/MoC-Mo 2 C@NC interface, which further favors water dissociation on Mo sites and hydrogen desorption on Ru sites of Ru/MoC-Mo 2 C@NC. These regulating effects collectively accelerate the hydrogen intermediate transport and enhance the overall HER kinetics. This work provides valuable insights into enhanced electronic metal-support interaction on a heterostructure catalytic system optimizing both water dissociation and reverse hydrogen spillover for designing highly efficient water electrolysis catalysts.

Herein, ultra-small molybdenum carbide nanodots encapsulated in nitrogen-doped porous carbon (Mo2C/N-PC) were synthesized by a facile one-pot method. Ammonium molybdate and low-cost starch were used as precursors of Mo2C and C. Ammonium nitrate was selected as a nitrogen dopant, which played multiple roles in the reduction of MoC to Mo2C, nitrogen doping of carbon, and formation of a porous structure with abundant structural defects, thus avoiding the high-temperature reduction by H2/Ar. The optimized Mo2C/N-PC hybrid has a remarkable catalytic activity towards the HER over a wide pH range (0–14). Especially, under alkaline conditions, an overpotential as small as −100 mV vs. RHE could be achieved at 10 mA cm−2, comparable to that of the best Mo2C-based materials. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that a decreased Gibbs free energy for H* adsorption (ΔGH*) could be obtained by combining Mo2C with N-PC, proving the synergistic enhancement mechanism of nitrogen doping and structural defects. This material contains no noble metals and can be easily synthesized on a large scale; thus, it should have significant potential in hydrogen production.
