Janus wettability Ag/polydopamine textile-based separated type solar interfacial evaporator for efficient salt-free desalination

Hua Li,Yumin Wang,Zhiqiang Hou,Xingyu Zhao,Xiao Miao,Guina Ren,Xiaotao Zhu

Solar-powered interfacial evaporation is emerging as a promising way to desalinate water and address global freshwater scarcity. The combination of a high water production rate and salt resistance capacity is highly desirable in the solar steam generation process, yet still challenging to realize. To overcome this problem, a suspended interfacial evaporator was developed using the Janus Ag/PDA textile. The Janus wettability of the Ag/PDA textile facilitated the unidirectional movement of water from the top to the bottom surface. The suspended type design of the Ag/PDA textile evaporator was capable of reducing heat dissipation to bulk water and enhancing localized heat generation significantly under solar illumination, thereby facilitating effective desalination. The steam generation rate reached an impressive 2.96 kg m -2 h −1 under one sun of solar irradiation. Remarkably, no salt crystallisation was observed on the evaporator surface during a 50 h continuous experiment in a highly saline environment (15 wt% NaCl). The remarkable salt inhibition capacity was attributed to three factors, including the salt rejection effect, the salt removal effect, and the salt dissolution effect. It is hoped that this work will inspire the development of a durable solar steam evaporator.

Shu-Huan Chen,Huma Javeria,Xu-Hui Sun,Zhen-Xia Du

With the proliferation of vehicles in households, people are spending more and more time in their cars, so it is important to ensure the air quality and safety of the car. In this research, environmentally friendly, green PET@PDA@MIL-101(Fe) (PPM) was prepared by in-situ solvothermal growth and acid etching methods, which was categorized by SEM, FTIR, XRD, XPS, and BET. PPM was used to adsorb benzene, toluene, and m-xylene at low concentrations. The maximum amount of adsorption of PET@PDA@MIL-101(Fe) (PPM) for benzene, toluene, and m-xylene was 68.72 mg/g, 91.63 mg/g, and 78.47 mg/g respectively. The adsorption process of PPM is well fitted by the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Langmuir isothermal adsorption model. Furthermore, PPM exhibited excellent toluene removal performance in simulated vehicles and excellent cycling capability in adsorption-desorption experiments. As a result, PPM can be used to treat and manage toluene volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at low concentrations.

PAMA–Arg brush-functionalized magnetic composite nanospheres for highly effective enrichment of phosphorylated biomolecules

Bin Luo,Xiaoxi Zhou,Peipei Jiang,Qiangying Yi,Fang Lan,Yao Wu

Highly effective enrichment of phosphorylated biomolecules is vital for an in depth and comprehensive phosphoproteome analysis. Among affinity materials, materials based on the immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMAC) method are most commonly used in phosphopeptide enrichment. However, the problem of metal cation loss in IMAC materials is still a challenge. In this study, a novel strategy has been developed for both highly effective enrichment of phosphorylated biomolecules and prevention of metal cation loss using Fe3O4/polydopamine/poly(2-aminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride)/arginine (Fe3O4/PDA/PAMA–Arg) composite nanospheres. The magnetic composite nanospheres were prepared by a facile method, possessing uniform morphology, a high saturation magnetization (45 emu g−1), and a quick magnetic response (within 10 s). Noticeably, abundant guanidyl and amino groups of the PAMA–Arg brushes endowed the nanospheres with extremely high detection sensitivity (0.2 fmol), excellent selectivity (β-casein/BSA = 1 : 500), and high recyclability (5 cycles) in phosphopeptide analysis. Furthermore, the Fe3O4/PDA/PAMA–Arg nanospheres exhibited specific separation capacity towards β-casein or ovalbumin (OVA) in the model protein mixture and remarkably selective enrichment performance for phosphorylated biomolecules in real biological samples (egg white, nonfat milk, and rat brain lysate), showing great potential for trace biological detection and proteomics analysis.

Kinetics of light assisted catalytic reduction of 4-NP over Ag/PDA

Kun Wang,Xun Zhu,Rong Chen,Dingding Ye,Yang Yang,Qiang Liao

In this work, Ag nanoparticles as surface plasmon catalysts were prepared on polydopamine microspheres via in-situ reduction for catalytic 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol in the presence of sodium borohydride. The kinetics of catalytic reaction under light and dark conditions was compared. It was found that the reaction rate constant under light condition was increased by 53.6% due to the surface plasmon resonance effect. The transition state theory was used to reveal the enhanced mechanism of catalytic conversion of 4-nitrophenol under light condition. It is demonstrated that the light-excited high-energy electrons are responsible for the shift of the adsorbed reactants to the excited state with higher potential energy, lowering the apparent activation energy from 47.2 kJ/mol to 32.6 kJ/mol and thereby enhancing the conversion of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol. This study offers a deep insight into the contribution of surface plasmon resonance to catalytic conversion of 4-nitrophenol by surface plasmon catalysts.

Bioinspired PDA@TiO2 modification on high-voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 toward enhancing electrochemical performance

Shuqing Ren,Yuehua Wen,Huiling Chen,Pan He,Chunze Ma,Chenyang Zhang,Meng Li,Dongmei Han

Improving the cycling performance without sacrificing its capacity is challenging for high-voltage LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 cathode due to the trade-off nature among the key properties. A self-polymerization process of dopamine was utilized to grow polydopamine (PDA)-nano titanium dioxide assembly. PDA@TiO 2 composite was demonstrated to be integrated with the particles of high-voltage spinel LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 cathodes via wet chemical method . PDA@TiO 2 decorated LNMO improved the long-term cycling performance and rate capability by suppressing detrimental side reactions in balancing the interfacial stability and Li + diffusion kinetics of LNMO and consequently providing efficient conductive pathways. As a result, 2% PDA@TiO 2 modified LNMO cathode exhibited the high reversible capacity of 117   mAh   g −1 after 1000 cycles with good capacity retention of 90.7% at 1 C, and superior rate capability (78.5   mAh   g −1 at 5 C) at room temperature. Remarkably, a significant improvement in cycling stability at an elevated temperature (50   °C) was obtained for the PDA@TiO 2 -LNMO composite, giving a capacity retention of 93% after 100 cycles at 1 C. The mechanism of performance improvement could be attributed to the maintenance of the structural stability of LNMO cathode materials and the enhanced kinetics of the remarkable lithium-ion diffusion through the protective effect of PDA@TiO 2 decorating.

Double Core–Shell BaTiO3@Al2O3@PDA-Based Nanocomposites for Energy Storage Applications

Li Xin,Zhou Sikai,Wu Lingyun,Li Haozhi,Lv Jiangyi,Ren Xinlei,Wang Zhuo

With their ultrahigh power density and excellent reliability, polymer-based dielectric capacitors are highly attractive for use in critical applications, such as DC-link capacitors in electric vehicles and power conditioning systems for renewable energy integration. Incorporating high-dielectric-constant inorganic fillers into polymers is the most common and direct strategy for enhancing energy storage. However, conventional composites suffer from poor compatibility and a large dielectric mismatch between the inorganic phase and the polymer matrix, which hinders simultaneous improvement of discharge energy density and energy storage efficiency. Herein, we report a BaTiO 3 @Al 2 O 3 @PDA double core–shell nanoparticle that significantly enhances the energy storage performance of PVDF-based composites at an ultralow filler loading. In this system, the Al 2 O 3 interlayer acts as a wide-bandgap-insulating barrier, mitigating local electric field concentration and suppressing leakage current, while the outer polydopamine (PDA) shell enhances both the dispersion of the fillers and their compatibility with the PVDF matrix. In this study, the 0.5 wt % BaTiO 3 @Al 2 O 3 @PDA/PVDF composite film exhibited significantly enhanced breakdown strength (437.02 kV/mm), a discharge energy density of up to 13.8 J/cm 3 , and an energy storage efficiency of 76.8%. These results indicate that this nanocomposite holds great potential for use in next-generation, high-performance film capacitors for electric vehicles and renewable energy systems.

Purification and recovery of trypsin using Fe3O4@PDA@BTI magnetic affinity adsorbent

Chen Li,Yue Yu,Xin Liu,Xiaodong Cui,Yuru Guo,Jiao Li,Fang Li

● Recombinant BTI was immobilized on PDA-coated Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles. ● Fe₃O₄@PDA@BTI enabled one-step trypsin purification from porcine pancreatic homogenate. ● The maximum trypsin adsorption capacity was 13.78 ± 0.34 mg/g. A magnetic affinity adsorbent, Fe₃O₄@PDA@BTI, was prepared by immobilizing recombinant buckwheat trypsin inhibitor (BTI) on polydopamine (PDA)-coated Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles. TEM, FTIR, XRD, VSM, BTI-loading analysis, and retained inhibitory activity collectively supported the successful construction of the material. The adsorbent recovered trypsin from porcine pancreatic extract in a single batch purification step, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 13.78 ± 0.34 mg/g. Fe₃O₄@PDA@BTI retained more than 90% of its inhibitory activity at pH 4–10, more than 85% of its inhibitory activity after 3 h at 30–80 ℃, and approximately 94% after 30 d at 4 ℃. It also exhibited good stability against ethanol, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), urea, and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). However, the relative adsorption capacity decreased to 45.35 ± 0.19% after 10 reuse cycles, indicating that ligand coupling and regeneration require further optimization. These results demonstrate the feasibility of combining recombinant inhibitor recognition with magnetic recovery for trypsin purification.

Ultrasound-boosted laccase-like activity of Cu-MOF@PDA for Cr sensing

Jianlong Gu,Yuchen Liu,Jieyun Cai,Jie Long,Jing Ma,Zilong Zhang,Bing Yang,Hongming Meng,Yaling Yang,Li Gao

In this study, a colorimetric detection system for Cr(III) was established by leveraging the laccase-mimicking activity of two-dimensional Cu-based metal-organic frameworks (Cu-MOFs) modified with polydopamine (PDA) nanomaterials (Cu-MOF@PDA), through which Cr(III) specifically inhibits the catalytic performance. The Cu-MOF@PDA composite exhibited significant laccase-mimicking activity, enabling the oxidation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DP) and 4-aminoantipyrine (4-AP), leading to the generation of a red-colored compound. Notably, the laccase-like activity of Cu-MOF@PDA was substantially enhanced under ultrasonic (US) stimulation. Free-radical trapping experiments revealed that the levels of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and hydroxyl radicals ( OH) were markedly increased, while the electron transfer rate was accelerated, thereby boosting catalytic efficiency under US exposure. The research confirmed that Cr(III) binds to Cu-MOF@PDA, leading to the suppression of its catalytic activity. A strong linear correlation (R 2  = 0.995) was observed between the absorbance at 505 nm and Cr(III) concentrations ranging from 0.67 to 54.17 μg/L, with a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.26 μg/L (S/N = 3). The developed approach was effectively utilized for the analysis of Cr(III) and total Cr in cigarette tipping paper samples, yielding highly satisfactory results.

Photothermal superhydrophobic LA-MOF@PDA@MS sponge for offshore crude oil recovery

Yue Lian,Xilin Wang,Hong Chen,Yong Hu,Mengqi Liang,Qiaoyu Huang,Zhaoxia Chen,Yong Liu,Yuhong Zhang

With the rapid development of industrial activities, oil spills have occurred frequently at sea, causing increasingly severe ecological damage and environmental pollution. However, traditional superhydrophobic sponges can only adsorb low-viscosity oils and are ineffective for high-viscosity crude oils with poor fluidity. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop novel materials capable of effectively addressing crude oil spills. In this paper, LA-MOF was prepared by modifying zirconium-based metal-organic framework (UiO-66-NH 2 ) with lauric acid (LA), and a photothermal superhydrophobic sponge (LA-MOF@PDA@MS) was fabricated by sequentially depositing polydopamine (PDA) and LA-MOF onto melamine sponges (MS). The resulting LA-MOF@PDA@MS exhibits excellent water repellency, with a water contact angle (WCA) of 155.5°, along with good self-cleaning properties, chemical stability, and mechanical durability. The modified sponge demonstrates an oil absorption capacity ranging from 28.60 to 56.83 g/g, with separation efficiencies exceeding 97 % for the select oils. Moreover, the LA-MOF@PDA@MS exhibits remarkable photothermal performance, capable of elevating its temperature to 68.3 °C within 300 s under simulated sunlight irradiation. The heating capability significantly reduces the viscosity of crude oil, enabling efficient absorption. The sponge achieves a saturated crude oil uptake of 60.7 g/g with a transfer rate of 5.49 g/min. Furthermore, the modified sponge displays excellent anti-icing and antimicrobial properties, further extending its service life in practical applications. These superior characteristics make the LA-MOF@PDA@MS sponge a highly promising candidate for oil spill remediation.

Engineering PDA@CNTs-Enhanced sulfobetaine methacrylate hydrogels for superior flexible sensor applications

Jian Liu,Xiao Wang,Kai Han,Jing Liu,Jinfeng Yuan,Mingwang Pan,Zhicheng Pan

Conductive hydrogels have attracted significant attention as versatile materials for flexible sensors, with potential implementation in wearable technologies, electronic skins, and health diagnostics. However, traditional hydrogel models are frequently limited by their inadequate mechanical strength, poor conductivity, weak adhesion, and low durability, which pose significant barriers to their further application in flexible sensors. In this work, we prepared composite multifunctional hydrogels as flexible sensors, which were synthesized from sulfobetaine methacrylate SBMA) and acrylamide (AM), infused with dodecyl quaternary ammonium salt (Q12), and incorporated with poly(dopamine)-functionalized carbon nanotubes (PDA@CNTs). The PDA modification enhances the compatibility of CNTs with the hydrogel matrix. The incorporation of PDA@CNTs into the hydrogel matrix, along with the establishment of multiple dynamic bonds—such as ionic bonds, hydrogen bonds, cation-π interactions, and π-π stacking between polymer chains and PDA moieties—significantly enhances its tensile strength (53.79 kPa), toughness (134.77 kJ/m 3 ), adhesive capabilities (29.84 kPa to paper), and electrical conductivity (0.2 S/m). Moreover, the composite hydrogel reveals a remarkable mechanical strain response, coupled with impressive stability and durability over prolonged periods. It efficiently differentiates between mild elongations (10%–40 %) and substantial elongations (50%–300 %), thereby showcasing its capability for real-time biomechanical motion monitoring. Additionally, the composite hydrogel displays remarkable photothermal antibacterial efficacy upon exposure to near-infrared (NIR) radiation, along with outstanding biocompatibility under standard conditions, thereby confirming its suitability for safe and long-term biological interactions. The exceptional functionality of these composite hydrogels renders them highly conducive to diverse applications in the realm of wearable sensor technologies.

Advanced moisture-resistant Mg@PDA@PTFE: Proportional optimization and energy release characterization

Shuai Ma,Hongyu Huang,Haoming Zou,Xijuan Lv,Shuai Zhao,Ting Zhang,Qinghai Shu

The study focuses on resolving moisture-induced oxidative deactivation and Mg/PTFE interfacial bonding challenges in reactive materials by utilizing polydopamine (PDA) to bridge magnesium (Mg) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Initially, a 5 % PDA content was set based on FIB-SEM and specific surface area results, yielding a surface area of 18.2794 m 2 /g for Mg@5%PDA. The contact angle reached 76.91°, a 19.62° increase over raw Mg, signifying improved hydrophobicity. Subsequently, analysis of the thermal and combustion behavior of Mg@PTFE indicated continuous improvement with increasing PTFE content, reaching an inflection point at 8 % PTFE. The DSC peak temperature of Mg@PTFE increased with higher PTFE content, indicating enhanced stability. However, the DSC heat release reaches its maximum of 5806 J/g at 8 % PTFE. Meanwhile, ignition delay minimized to 117 ms at 8 % PTFE, a 53.01 % reduction compared to 4 % PTFE. Additionally, the contact angle of Mg@8%PTFE was 96.12°, a 38.83° rise from raw Mg, further improving hydrophobicity. Finally, optimal PTFE content was determined to be 8 %. Hence, the Mg@5%PDA@8%PTFE dual-core shell structure was successfully fabricated, with hydrophobicity tests showing a contact angle of 108.54°, a significant 51.25°increase over raw Mg, demonstrating exceptional hydrophobicity.

CdS/PDA enhanced solar-driven phase change evaporator for continuous seawater desalination

Yichi Liu,Minming Zou,Wenjing Chen,Yuqiong Xie,Wenxing Luo,Yan Ma,Lixiang Luo,Xiongxin Jiang,Qinglin Li,Xiaowu Hu

Solar-powered evaporation has been recognized as a promising technology for desalination in view of the challenge of freshwater scarcity. Yet, conventional evaporation systems are constrained by the intermittent nature of solar radiation. We have developed a novel solar-driven phase change evaporator based on carbonized melamine foam (CMF). This evaporator breaks the constraints of solar discontinuity on the evaporation system by introducing phase change material (PCM) and utilizing its phase change energy storage property. Owing to the high loading of CMF on polyethylene glycol (PEG), the evaporator exhibits high energy storage capacity of up to 149.1 J/g. With the introduction of PEG, the evaporator still performed notable dark evaporation rate (0.74 kg m −2  h −1 ) after the loss of light 30 min. In particular, evaporated water displays excellent vegetative compatibility and can be utilized to irrigate crops. This research provides a new pathway for continuous solar-driven evaporation that can be used for long-term water production.
