In response to the dual challenges of global freshwater scarcity and organic pollutant control, this study innovatively developed a heterogeneous wettability composite sponge (HWCS) by integrating solar driven interfacial evaporation with peroxymonosulfate activation catalysis. The material features a heterogeneous wettability substrate formed by doping superhydrophobic SiO 2 aerogel particles into a superhydrophilic polyvinyl formal porous matrix. The SiO 2 aerogel particles reconstruct solution transport pathways by converting macroscale mass transfer channels into micro-nano multichannel networks, which can significantly suppress thermal conduction losses while ensuring the solution supply. After optimizing the aerogel particles doping amount (3 g per 30 g of 12 % PVA solution) and particle size (100 mesh), the evaporation efficiency of HWCS was enhanced from 1.088 kg·m −2 ·h −1 to 1.321 kg·m −2 ·h −1 , while the solar to vapor efficiency increased from 74.1 % to 90.2 % compared to homogeneous hydrophilic materials. Furthermore, the SDIE process synergistically enhanced PMS activation through localized temperature elevation and evaporation enrichment, achieving 91.6 % degradation of 100 ppm Congo Red within 90 min (apparent rate constant: 0.0289 min −1 ). HWCS also demonstrated robust mechanical strength, self-floating capability, and long-term stability, highlighting its potential for outdoor water treatment applications. This study offers a sustainable strategy to address both freshwater scarcity and organic pollution challenges.

The peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation process is considered as an effective way to remove emerging organic pollutants in the wastewater. However, the heterogeneous catalysts used for PMS activation suffers from low catalytic stability and PMS utilization efficiency. Herein, sulfur-doped cobalt ferrite loaded graphitic carbon nitride (S-CoFe 2 O 4 /CN) was firstly synthesized for PMS activation toward the sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal. The S-CoFe 2 O 4 /CN possessed excellent PMS catalytic activity and photocatalytic activity . The first-order kinetic constant (k) of SMX degradation in the presence of visible light reached 0.3564 min −1 with high PMS utilization efficiency (78.3 %). Mechanism analysis elucidated that compared to the original CoFe 2 O 4 , sulfur doping created more oxygen vacancies , while visible light further promoted the regeneration of Co(II), Fe(II) and oxygen vacancy, the formation of high-valent iron oxo as well as the reduction of S 2- oxidation. In addition, the visible light/S-CoFe 2 O 4 /CN/PMS system showed high resistance to inorganic ions , and superior catalytic stability. Both acute and chronic toxicity of treated SMX solution decreased. This study provides an effective system to remove emerging organic pollutants in the wastewater.

In this work, Cu-based metal-organic framework material (Cu-MOF) was combined with an electric field to construct a three-dimensional electrocatalytic synergistic activation of peroxymonosulfate sulfate (PMS) system (3D/Cu-MOF/EC/PMS) for the degradation of norfloxacin (NOR). The results show that the synergistic degradation efficiency of the Cu-MOF material with the electric field is enhanced by nearly 64 % relative to the degradation efficiency of the two alone. The quenching experimental and EPR characterization indicates that ROS plays an important role in the degradation process, with O 2 – playing a dominant role. Finally, the degradation pathway of NOR was explored by DFT study and LC-MS tests, and the toxicity evaluation software (TEST) and CCK-8 cytotoxicity experimental studies demonstrated that the sewage after the degradation of NOR by this system would have little or no effect on human liver cells (L02). This study not only shows that the 3D/Cu-MOF/EC/PMS system can treat the water containing higher concentrations of NOR into a state that is not harmful to the human body but also provides a new idea for the improvement of catalysts that do not have obvious catalytic degradation effects.

Strategy exploration for tailored conversing bio-wastes into valuable functional matrices with varied potentiality is a hotspot in the field of environmental remediation and green chemistry. As is known, the direct combustion of rice hulls has led to serious atmospheric pollution. Accordingly, how to controllably convert rice hulls into catalytic functional materials for water remediation is highly demanded yet remains a great improvement. Herein, low-cost and environmentally friendly surface-loaded cobalt/ hydrochar composites (Co-RHs) were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal carbonizing cobalt-impregnated rice hull waste. The Co-RH-130 exhibited prominent performance in efficiently activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade carbamazepine (CBZ), which could remove 95.78% of CBZ within 60 min. Additionally, the Co-RH-130 in recyclability tests maintained high stability and recyclability from the synergy of cobalt oxides and hydrochar, and the inherent mechanically stable of the rice hulls. Based on quenching tests and EPR analysis, SO 4 •− and O 2 •− were proved as the predominant reactive species for the CBZ degradation and the reaction mechanism was elucidated. Most importantly, the degradation experiment of the fixed-bed column was used to simulate the degradation process under actual conditions to evaluate the efficiency and practical application value, which showed that the continuous degradation rate of 97.06% of CBZ could still be reached in the Co-RH-130/PMS system at 720 min. This work might provide a contributing solution for the controllable conversion of rice hull waste and practical treatment for continuous organic wastewater.

Iron-mediated activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) has long been of a great interest for the effective oxidation of micropollutants. In this study, ferroferric oxide doped powdered activated charcoal (PAC) was prepared by a chemical co-precipitation method in which abundant ferroferric oxide nanocatalyst (FONC) were immobilized on the PAC. The catalyst (FONC@PAC) enabled an efficient degradation of tetracycline via activation of PMS over a wide range of pH and the removal efficiency could reach up to 86.9%. It was verified that the surface-bound SO 4 •− and 1 O 2 were the predominant reactive oxygen species in the catalytic process. A possible degradation pathway of TC was deduced and the toxicity of treated wastewater was drastically reduced after the catalytic degradation. Meanwhile, the catalyst demonstrated a decent degradation performance even after four recycles and suffered from little iron loss. The novel catalyst demonstrated its great potential for the removal of antibiotics in the wastewater.

In this study, we synthesized Co-based coordination polymer-derived nitrogen-doped carbon-coated Co 3 O 4 spheres (Co 3 O 4 @NC) and yolk-shell Co 3 O 4 spheres (Co 3 O 4 -YS) under various atmospheric conditions to explore their efficacy in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for tetracycline (TC) degradation. The Co 3 O 4 @NC, featuring a significantly higher specific surface area (268.4 m 2 /g), exhibited remarkable performance by achieving 90% TC removal in 5 minutes using 0.2 g/L PMS and 0.1 g/L of Co 3 O 4 @NC. This reaction rate was 9.2 times higher than that observed with Co 3 O 4 -YS. Furthermore, the Co 3 O 4 @NC/PMS system demonstrated exceptional stability across a wide pH range, in complex water compositions, and the presence of common coexisting ions. The unique coated structures effectively minimized the leaching of Co ions (below 0.447 mg/L). Additionally, the strong magnetism of Co 3 O 4 @NC allows for easy separation under a magnetic field. Mechanistic investigations identified 1 O 2 , ∙OH, O 2 ∙ - , and SO 4 ∙ - as the principal reactive species. The study also explored potential degradation pathways and toxicity.

In this study, wet scrubber coupled with UV/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was used as a semi-batch process for removing gaseous VOCs. Both ethyl acetate and toluene could be removed efficiently using this coupled process due to the generation of SO 4 − and HO . The mass-transfer coefficients in this coupled process were larger than in wet scrubbing only process. The roles of SO 4 − and HO were investigated, in which SO 4 − acted as the predominant radical for toluene degradation while HO was major for ethyl acetate. This could be further confirmed by simultaneous degradation of ethyl and toluene. Moreover, the reaction solution reused at least four times still showed excellent performance for VOCs removal via re-adding PMS. A possible mechanism on toluene degradation was proposed based on the evolutions of intermediates during the process. This study clarified the roles of non-selective radical (i.e. HO ) and selective radical (i.e. SO 4 − and Cl ) in the removal of a continuous-flow gaseous VOCs by this coupled process.

In the metal-based peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation process, the sluggish surface redox cycle of metal ions generally hampered the efficiency of PMS activation for pollutant removal. Herein, Co-doped CuWO 4 /BN quantum dots (CW/Co/BNQDs) photocatalysts were developed to realize Cu 2+ /Cu + and Co 2+ /Co 3+ dual ions redox cycles for PMS activation, which would facilitate the tetracycline (TC) removal. CW/4Co/2BNQDs could degrade 94.8% TC within 30 min in PMS/Vis system, and the apparent rate constant of CW/4Co/2BNQDs was 2.7 times and 1.2 times higher than those of CW and CW/4Co, respectively. The improved TC degradation performance could be attributed to the synergetic effect between BNQDs and dual redox cycles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra of samples before and after the reaction demonstrated that BNQDs were beneficial for accelerating the Cu 2+ /Cu + and Co 2+ /Co 3+ redox cycles in CW/4Co/2BNQDs, further boosting the activation of PMS in TC degradation. Experiments of different radical scavengers revealed that the SO 4 ·− /·OH/h + / 1 O 2 reactive species participated in the PMS activation for the TC degradation process. The possible TC degradation pathway and intermediate toxicity were detailed investigated. In addition, CW/4Co/2BNQDs exhibited outstanding photocatalytic activity over five consecutive cycles, which illustrated that it was supposed to be a reliable PMS activator over antibiotic elimination for practical application. And this work shed new light on constructing dual redox cycles for efficient PMS activation.

Mounting evidence highlights the negative impacts of thiamethoxam (THM) on non-target organisms and ecosystem. Herein, multi-phase cadmium sulfide loaded on biochar (CdS@BC) was used to photocatalytic activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to remove THM. The obtained CdS@BC significantly improved the photocatalytic performance of PMS on THM degradation with a superior rate constant of 0.165 min −1 , 60 times more than that of BC. In addition, the catalyst displayed excellent stability and reusability. The mechanism of free radical formation by adsorption activation of PMS adsorbed on CdS@BC was characterized using active species detection and Density functional theory (DFT) calculations. According to the DFT study, the phase junction and π-conjugated structure contribute to the stable migration of π-electrons, thus effectively activating the PMS to produce active substances for the degradation of THM. The findings provide a theoretical basis for the design and synthesis of effective catalysts for AOPs to remove emerging organic contaminants from wastewater.

High photocorrosion and poor reaction efficiency of Bi 2 MoO 6 greatly hampered its wide application in wastewater treatment . Herein, V doped Bi 2 MoO 6 was prepared by hydrothermal-subsequent annealing strategy for the refractory sulfapyridine abatement through visible-light-driven photocatalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The degradation results revealed V-doped Bi 2 MoO 6 could achieved 100% sulfapyridine removal after 20 min over Bi 2 MoO 6 /PMS/Vis system, much higher than Bi 2 MoO 6 /PMS/Vis system. Experimental and theoretical calculations indicated that the V doping not only changed the energy band structure of Bi 2 MoO 6 and promoted the separation of photogenerated charges as well as improved the adsorption energy of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), H 2 O and dissolved oxygen on the catalyst surface, but also provided additional PMS activation pathway through V 5+ /V 4+ redox cycles, finally contributed to enhanced sulfapyridine degradation performance in Bi 2 MoO 6 /PMS/Vis system. Our work provides insight into designing highly efficient photocatalyst as a promising PMS activator for environmental application.

Nanoplastics have gradually become a concern due to the wide use of plastics. Nanoplastics in aqueous phase can be exposed to users through water supply networks and cannot be efficiently removed by conventional water treatment processes. This work studied the degradation of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NP) by two commonly used advanced oxidation systems: UV/NaClO and UV/peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Results showed that almost no turbidity was detected in the PS-NP solution (5.00 mg/L) after treated by both UV/NaClO and UV/PMS for 360 min, suggesting the excellent turbidity removal ability. Yet, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and total organic carbon (TOC) removal tests demonstrated that PS-NP could not be completely degraded by UV/NaClO. The mineralization rate using UV/NaClO was only 7.00% even when the NaClO concentration increased to 5.00 mM, and many PS-NP particles could still be observed in SEM images. By contrast, the mineralization rate reached 63.90% in the UV/PMS system under the identical experimental conditions, and no spherical particles appeared in the SEM results. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the different reaction sites and energy barriers of SO4•−and•Cl on PS-NP resulted in the differences in mineralization rates and degradation intermediates. The degradation pathway of PS-NP by UV/NaClO and UV/PMS was proposed accordingly. Additionally, the intermediates toxicity evaluation by a luminescent bacteria test showed that the inhibition rate in the UV/NaClO system (2.97%) was not markedly different from that in the control group without any treatment (1.98%); while that in UV/PMS system increased sharply to 98.19%. This work demonstrated that UV/PMS was more effective in PS-NP degradation than UV/NaClO, and the chemical risks of degradation intermediates were non-negligible.Keywords:nanoplastics;polystyrene degradation;mechanisms;DFT calculation;toxicity assessment

The recovery of anode graphite as catalysts is rarely reported in the published works. In this study, a simple method was used to recover anode graphite from spent lithium-ion battery (LIB) as catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ). Graphite catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic performance with the mineralization efficiency of CBZ of 81% in the graphite/PMS system. This system was highly effective in a wide pH range of 3.0–11.0. Inorganic ions (Cl - , HCO 3 - , K + , etc) and natural organic matter (HA) exhibited some influences on the degradation of CBZ. The electron-donating groups of C O and C-OH were identified in the recovered graphite, which transferred electrons to activate PMS generating sulfate radical (SO 4 - •), hydroxyl radical (HO•), and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). Under the attack of multiple reactive species, five intermediates were detected in the degradation of CBZ and disappeared quickly after 1 min. Particularly, the graphite/PMS system was effective for CBZ degradation in real water matrix, showing a higher degradation efficiency of 93% in tap water (TW). This study provides a green and efficient approach for recovering graphite catalyst from spent LIB as PMS catalyst to degrade organic pollutants in wastewater.
