A dual-emission fluorescence sensor constructed by encapsulating double carbon dots in zeolite imidazole frameworks for sensing Pb2+

Xiaoqiong Wang,Hao Guo,Ning Wu,Mengni Xu,Longwen Zhang,Wu Yang

A novel dual-emission ratio fluorescent sensor (N-CDs/R-CDs@ZIF-8) has been constructed successfully by introducing nitrogen-doped blue fluorescence carbon dots (N-CDs) and red fluorescence carbon dots (R-CDs) into the synthetic environment of ZIF-8 by a simple stirring method. The synthesized material not only inherits the excellent optical properties of N-CDs and R-CDs and the strong adsorption and accumulation performance of ZIF-8, but also shows strong fluorescence and structural stability in extreme environments. The presence of Pb 2+ strongly causes the fluorescence quenching of N-CDs, but has almost no effect on the fluorescence of R-CDs. Therefore, a ratio fluorescence sensor is developed for the determination of Pb 2+ . Most importantly, the real-time fluorescence response shows that the composite material has a high selectivity and good sensitivity to Pb 2+ determination, and the calculated LOD is 4.78 nM(S/N = 3) (0.05–50 μM), indicating that the material can be used as a potential fluorescent sensor for Pb 2+ detection.

Fluorescent Porous Silica Microspheres for Highly and Selectively Detecting Hg2+ and Pb2+ Ions and Imaging in Living Cells

Wei Sun,Qi Sun,Qiang Zhao,Luminita Marin,Xinjian Cheng

In this work, SiO2 microspheres were first prepared by a conventional Stöber method and then etched by NaOH solution to obtain porous ones. By tuning the degree of etching, specific surface area of SiO2 microspheres could be controlled. Then, small fluorescent molecules are synthesized and incorporated onto the surface and/or pores of the SiO2 via layer-by-layer reaction to obtain fluorescent microspheres, namely, SiO2–NH2–BODIPY (SiNBB), SiO2–NH2–BODIPY–indole–benzothiazole (SiNBIT), and SiO2–NH2–BODIPY–indole–benzoxazole (SiNBIO). The as-prepared microspheres SiNBB exhibit highly sensitive and selective recognition ability for Hg2+ and Pb2+. When SiNBB encounters Hg2+ and Pb2+, the fluorescence intensity of SiNBB is increased up to fivefold. SiNBIT and SiNBIO are solely sensitive to Hg2+, and both have a single high sensitivity to recognize Hg2+. The adsorption efficiency of Hg2+ by the three fluorescent microspheres SiNBB, SiNBIT, and SiNBIO reached 2.91, 0.99, and 0.98 g/g of microspheres, respectively. Experimental results of A549 cells and zebrafish indicate that the fluorescent microspheres are permeable to cell membranes and organisms. The distribution of Hg2+ in the brain of zebrafish was obtained by the fluorescence confocal imaging technique, and Hg2+ was successfully detected in A549 cells and zebrafish.

Simultaneous Detection of Cd2+ and Pb2+ with a Bismuth Film/Sulfur and Nitrogen Co-Doped Porous Graphene Electrode

Fengping Liu,Wei Huang,Zhenfa Zhang,Cuizhong Zhang,Qing Huang,Gang Xiang,Meiyan Liang,Jinyun Peng

In this work, a novel electrochemical sensor based on sulfur and nitrogen co-doped porous graphene (SNPG) is developed for the simultaneous detection of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ by in situ plating bismuth film. The large effective surface area and doped sulfur and nitrogen in porous graphene supply active sites with high affinity toward Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ by electrostatic interaction to improve the sensor performance, and the bismuth film improves the stripping voltammetric performance by forming bismuth-metal (Cd, Pb) alloys. Under optimized conditions, this sensor exhibits linearity in the range of 0.05-2 μM for Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ with a low detection limit of 0.02 μM for Cd 2+ and 0.008 μM for Pb 2+ . Moreover, the proposed sensor was applied for the simultaneous detection of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ in tap water with satisfactory results, suggesting that SNPG is a promising electrode material for detecting heavy metal ions.

Yongfeng Liu,Jiangtao Zhang,Xiaojun Du,Yang Cao,Youyi Sun

Here, the Ag nanoparticles decorated graphene (AgNP@GNs) were fabricated by combing liquid phase exfoliation with in-situ solvent reduction method. Furthermore, the electrochemical sensitivity toward Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ ions was also investigated in detail. This AgNP@GNs presented the excellent electrical properties (2.5×10 4 S/m), meanwhile showed high electrochemical detection ability toward Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ . The sensitivity of AgNP@GNs toward Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ was ca. 15.2μA/μM (or 1246.4μA/μg L -1 ) and 0.09μA/μM (4.32μA/μg L -1 ), respectively. The AgNP@GNs was also evaluated to electrochemical detection of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ in real water, in which the recoveries (96~124%) were obtained. The work does not only provide a facile method to synthesize AgNP@GNs with good dispersion, but also showed good electrical properties for various applications.

Enhanced stripping voltammetric response of Hg2+, Cu2+, Pb2+ and Cd2+ by ZIF-8 and its electrochemical analytical application

Yaru Chu,Feng Gao,Fei Gao,Qingxiang Wang

The zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8 was synthesized and mixed with chitosan (CS) solution to obtain a homogeneous dispersion. Then the dispersion of ZIF-8 and CS (ZIF-8-CS) modified glassy carbon electrode is fabricated and utilized for stripping voltammetric analysis of Hg 2+ , Cu 2+ , Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ for the first time. The large surface area effect and strong enriching effect of the nanosized ZIF-8 to the four heavy metal ions contribute to significantly enhance analytical signals. Under the optimum conditions, the stripping peak current densities linearly increased with Hg 2+ concentration in the range from 1.0   μM to 80.0   μM, and with Cu 2+ , Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ concentrations in the range from 1.0   μM to 100.0   μM. The analytical sensitivity for the four ions are estimated to be 14.20   μA·μM −1 ·cm −2 (Hg 2+ ), 2.797   μA·μM −1 ·cm −2 (Cu 2+ ), 5.203   μA·μM −1 ·cm −2 (Pb 2+ ) and 1.390   μA·μM −1 ·cm −2 (Cd 2+ ), respectively. The limits of detection for the four ions were estimated to be 0.0293   μM (Hg 2+ ), 0.108   μM (Cu 2+ ), 0.0619   μM (Pb 2+ ) and 0.135   μM (Cd 2+ ), respectively. The ZIF-8 based modified electrode also presented excellent anti-interference ability, and good reliability for monitoring the four ions in real water samples.

A label-free electrochemical aptasensor based on magnetic biocomposites with Pb2+-dependent DNAzyme for the detection of thrombin

Chunhong Zhu,Wanying Zhu,Lei Xu,Xuemin Zhou

Herein, a novel magnetic biocomposite (Fe 3 O 4 @Au-S1/S2) was applied to analyze thrombin. The Fe 3 O 4 @Au-S1/S2 consisted of Fe 3 O 4 @Au nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 @Au NPs) as carriers for magnetic separation and magnetic field-induced self-assembly, thiolated complementary strand (S1) anchored based on Au-S bond and thrombin binding aptamer (S2) as a recognition element. As a redox indicator , methylene blue (MB) can be adsorbed to DNA anchored on the surface of Fe 3 O 4 @Au NPs by electro-static interaction. In the absence of thrombin, MB were adsorbed on double-stranded DNA (S1/S2) which anchored on Fe 3 O 4 @Au NPs and a high electrochemical signal of MB was recorded by Differential pulse voltammetry . Conversely, the complementary strand (S1) exposed after thrombin competitively bonded with aptamer. The introduction of Pb 2+ -dependent DNAzyme (S3) split S1 at specific rA site, resulting in the significantly decreased adsorption capacity of MB. Thus, the thrombin detection could be recorded by monitoring the electrochemical signal reduction of MB through incubation of thrombin with S3. This method exhibited a high sensitivity toward thrombin with a broad linear range from 5 pmol L −1 to 5 nmol L −1 and a limit of detection of 1.8 pmol L −1 .

Cathodic electrochemiluminescence of a CdSe/ZnS QDs-modified glassy carbon electrode and its application in sensing of Pb2+

Li Wang,Di Luo,Dongdong Qin,Duoliang Shan,Xiaoquan Lu

This paper reports the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) behavior of CdSe/ZnS with K2S2O8 as the coreactant. The effects of pH, K2S2O8 concentration, the duration of the reaction of 4-ATP with GCE and the duration of the reaction of 4-ATP/GCE with QDs on ECL intensity were studied in detail. A possible ECL reaction mechanism was then proposed. In addition, it was observed that the ECL intensity was efficiently quenched by trace amounts of heavy metal ion. Based on the quenching effect of Pb2+ upon the ECL of CdSe/ZnS QDs, a QDs-ECL sensor was constructed to detect Pb2+ in preserved duck egg. The sensor showed good reproducibility and stability.

Development of MOF-derived Co3O4 microspheres composed of fiber stacks for simultaneous electrochemical detection of Pb2+ and Cu2+

Guo Jieli,Li Jin,Xing Xiujing,Xiong Wei,Li Hao

As an ideal transition metal oxide, Co 3 O 4 is a P-type semiconductor with excellent electrical conductivity, non-toxicity and low cost. This work reports the successful construction of Co 3 O 4 materials derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) using a surfactant micelle template-solvothermal method. The modified electrodes are investigated for their ability to electrochemically detect Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ in aqueous environments. By adjusting the mass ratios of alkaline modifiers, the morphological microstructures of Co 3 O 4 -X exhibit a transition from distinctive microspheres composed of fiber stacks to rods. The results indicate that Co 3 O 4 -1(NH 4 F/CO(NH 2 ) 2  = 1:0) has a distinctive microsphere structure composed of stacked fibers, unlike the other two materials. Co 3 O 4 -1/GCE is used as the active material of the modified electrode, it shows the largest peak response currents to Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ , and efficiently detects Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ in the aqueous environment individually and simultaneously. The linear response range of Co 3 O 4 -1/GCE for the simultaneous detection of Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ is 0.5–1.5 μM, with the limits of detection (LOD, S/N = 3) are 9.77 nM and 14.97 nM, respectively. The material exhibits a favorable electrochemical response, via a distinctive Co 3 O 4 -1 microsphere structure composed of stacked fibers. This structure enhances the number of active adsorption sites on the material, thereby facilitating the adsorption of heavy metal ions (HMIs). The presence of oxygen vacancies (O V ) can also facilitate the adsorption of ions. The Co 3 O 4 -1/GCE electrode also exhibits excellent anti-interference ability, stability, and repeatability. This is of great practical significance for detecting Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ in real water samples and provides a new approach for developing high-performance metal oxide electrochemical sensors derived from MOFs. Influence of Soil Colloids on the Transport of Cd2+ and Pb2+ under Different pH and Ionic Strength Conditions

Zihao Ye,Dihao Xu,Jiawen Zhong,Shuang Gao,Jinjin Wang,Yulong Zhang,Huijuan Xu,Yongtao Li,Wenyan Li

The co-transport of contaminants by soil colloids can generate substantial environmental risk, and this behavior is greatly affected by environmental conditions. In this study, AF4-ICP-MS was used to investigate the size distribution and composition of Cd/Pb-bearing colloids; saturated sand column experiments were used to investigate the impact of soil colloids on the transport of Cd/Pb under different pH and ionic strength conditions. AF4-ICP-MS characterization showed that natural colloids were primarily associated with two sizes ranges: 0.3–35 KDa (F1, fine nanoparticles) and 280 KDa–450 nm (F2, larger nanoparticles), which mainly consisted of organic matter (OM), iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn) (oxy)hydroxides and clay minerals. Fine nanoparticles could strongly adsorb Cd and Pb under all environmental conditions. Mn and Fe (oxy)hydroxides generally formed under neutral to alkaline conditions and exhibited adsorption capabilities for Cd and Pb, respectively. Transport experiments were conducted under different pH and ionic strength conditions. At pH 3.0, soil colloids had little effect on the transport of Cd2+and Pb2+. At pH 5.0, soil colloids inhibited the transport of Cd2+by 16.1%, and Pb2+recovery was still 0.0%. At pH 7.0 and 9.0, soil colloids facilitated the transport of Cd2+by 15.6% and 29.6%, facilitated Pb2+by 1.3% and 6.4%. At an ionic strength of 0, 0.005, and 0.01 mol L−1NaNO3, soil colloids facilitated the transport of Cd2+by 77.7%, 45.8%, and 15.6%, only facilitated the transport of Pb2+by 46.2% at an ionic strength of 0 mol L−1NaNO3. At an ionic strength of 0.05 mol L−1NaNO3, soil colloids inhibited the transport of Cd2+and Pb2+by 33.1% and 21.0%, respectively. The transport of Cd2+and Pb2+facilitated by soil colloids was clearly observed under low ionic strength and non-acidic conditions, which can generate a potential environmental risk.

Low swelling Alginate/Lignin network gels with redox responsiveness for sustained release of agricultural fungicide and Pb2+ complexation

Ling Zheng,Farzad Seidi,Hongmiao Wu,Yang Huang,WeiBing Wu,Huining Xiao

Fungicides are among the most essential agrochemicals for controlling crop diseases. However, the increased consumption of fungicides has resulted in environmental pollution and adversely affected human health. The slow-release technology can improve the efficacy and reduce the required amount of fungicide. Here, we developed a low-swelling redox-responsive alginate/lignin network bearing covalently conjugated fungicide thymol-Cl. Natural reductants in the environment caused the selective cleavage of disulfide bonds and release of thymol-Cl and thiazolidin-2-one (a by-product), which both could inhibit the phytopathogenic fungus ( F. oxysporum ). At the same time, metal chelating groups in the gel endow strong interactions with heavy metal ions for improving soil remediation and preventing the adsorption of toxic metals by the plant roots. The fungicide-loaded carrier could alleviate the poisonous effect of fungi on maize seeds. Indeed, the secretion of natural reducing agents by fungi and maize led to the cleavage of disulfide bonds and the release of fungicides.

CRISPR/Cas12a-derived ratiometric fluorescence sensor for high-sensitive Pb2+ detection based on CDs@ZIF-8 and DNAzyme

Chuanyu Yang,Caiyi Du,Feiyu Yuan,Peitong Yu,Boxu Wang,Changshun Su,Ruiqi Zou,Junyang Wang,Xu Yan,Chunyan Sun,Hongxia Li

Benefiting from specific target recognition and trans-cleavage capabilities, the CRISPR/Cas12a system has great application prospects in the design of highly sensitive and rapid fluorescence biosensors. The CRISPR/Cas12a-based fluorophore-quencher molecular beacons exhibit single-color emission and are easily exposed to interference from environmental factors. Herein, we design a CRISPR/Cas12a-derived ratiometric fluorescence sensor for Pb 2+ detection based on embedded carbon dots@zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (CDs@ZIF-8) composites and DNAzyme. The functions of ZIF-8 about encapsulating red emissive CDs in the inner cavity and adsorbing DNA on the outer surface are integrated to establish dual fluorescence signals, thereby reducing the possibility of interference and improving sensing accuracy. The presence of Pb 2+ is converted into the change of activator by the GR5 DNAzyme to activate the CRISPR/Cas12a system, which provides signal amplification through multiple turnovers of side branch cutting, achieving highly sensitive detection of Pb 2+ with a low detection limit of 18 pM. This method has the advantages of simplicity, universality, and excellent quantitative ability, and has broad prospects in sensing applications.

Examination the effects of Zn2+ and Cu2+ on the Pb2+ binding with dissolved organic matter using absorbance spectroscopy

Zhang Jilai,Jian Dan,Hu Chenglei,Chen Wenhua,Jiang Ming,Wang Sheng,Su Youbo,Zhang Naiming,Si Zhihao,Lu Menglan

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) strongly influences the geochemical mobility of metal ions, yet little is known about the mechanism of lead (Pb) binding to DOM in the presence of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn). This research used different types of ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy analysis technologies, including differential log-transformed spectra coupled with spectral slope calculation, and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) analysis to investigate the binding characteristics between Pb and DOM in the presence of Zn and Cu, respectively. The results indicate that the addition both of Zn 2+ or Cu 2+ can reduce the binding of DOM to Pb 2+ , with the effect of Cu 2+ being the most obvious. Specifically, significant changes were evident in the differential log-transformed absorbance at higher Zn 2+ /Cu 2+ concentrations, including modified spectral shapes, absorption wavelength fluctuation, and differential absorption intensity changes. The differential log-transformed absorbance spectral slopes (∆S 350-400 ) exhibited a positive correlation with the predicted NICA-Donnan model value in a wavelength range of 350–400 nm. This suggested that ∆S 350-400 served as an indicator for assessing the complexation characteristics of Pb and DOM binding in the presence of Zn 2+ and Cu 2+ , respectively. The 2D-COS spectral results showed that the presence of Zn 2+ /Cu 2+ changed the binding order of the DOM functional groups in response to Pb 2+ . This study revealed that Zn 2+ and Cu 2+ competed with Pb 2+ for complex sites on the DOM surface in different ways, altering the ability of Pb 2+ to bind with DOM. The results suggest that using differential log-transformed spectroscopy combined with ∆S 350-400 and 2D-COS analyses is a promising approach to understanding the mechanisms of Zn 2+ /Cu 2+ effects on Pb-DOM interactions, which may provide new insights into the prevention, control, and remediation of environmental Pb pollution.
