To prevent alcoholic liver disease, the addition of bioactive substances to the alcoholic drink Baijiu has been considered a feasible option. In the present study, the hepatoprotective effects of a sea cucumber sulfated polysaccharide (SCSP) isolated fromStichopus japonicuwere investigated. Moreover, in order to enhance its solubility in an alcohol solution, it was depolymerized using a photocatalytic reaction, and the photocatalytic degradation products (dSCSPs) with an average molecular weight of less than 2 kDa were studied and compared with SCSP. They were characterized by a series of chemical and spectroscopy methods and the oligosaccharide fragments in the dSCSP were further identified by HPLC-MSn analysis. Then, the in vivo experiment showed that the addition of SCSP or dSCSP to Baijiu could alleviate alcoholic liver injury in mice. Further analysis also revealed their protective effect in reducing oxidative stress damage and their regulation of the metabolism of phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) in the liver. Of note, dSCSP was more effective at reducing the level of malondialdehyde in the liver. These findings indicate that the addition of sea cucumber polysaccharide or its low-molecular-weight derivative in Baijiu has the potential to alleviate alcoholic liver injury.

Staphylococcus aureus contamination in food supplements poses substantial challenges to public health and large-scale production but the sensitive detection in a timely manner remains a bottleneck. Drawing inspiration from the sea hedgehog, gold nanostars (AuNSs) were leveraged to design an ultrasensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) biosensor for the determination of Staphylococcus aureus in food supplements. Besides the surface enhancement furnished by the AuNSs, Raman reporter molecules and specific aptamers sequentially self-assembled onto these AuNSs to construct the “three-in-one” SERS biosensor probe for label-based quantitation of Staphylococcus aureus . Following incubation with contaminated health product samples, the gold nanostars@Raman reporter-aptamer specifically recognize and assemble around Staphylococcus aureus cells, forming a distinctive sea hedgehog structure. This unique configuration results in an amplified Raman signal at 1338 cm −1 and an enhancement factor of up to 6.71 × 10 7 . The entire quantitative detection process can be completed within 30 min, boasting an exceptional limit of detection as low as 1.0 CFU mL −1 . The method exhibits a broad working range for the determination of Staphylococcus aureus , with concentrations spanning 2.15 CFU mL −1 to 2.15 × 10 5 CFU mL −1 . Furthermore, it demonstrates outstanding precision, with relative standard deviation values consistently below 5.0%. As a showcase to validate the practicality of the SERS method, we conducted tests on determining Staphylococcus aureus in a herbal food supplement, i.e., Ginkgo Biloba extract (GBE); the results align closely with those obtained through the conventional lysogeny broth agar plate method, pointing to the potential applicability in real-world scenarios.

Numerous applications require low humidity sensors that not only sensitive but also stable, small hysteresis, high resolution and fast response. However, most reported low humidity sensors cannot possess these properties at the same time. In this work, inspired by sea urchin , we developed an ionic liquid (IL) modified metal organic framework (UiO-66) based low humidity sensor. Owing to the synergistic effect of the hydrophilicity and ionic conductivity of IL and the steric hindrance effects of UiO-66, the optimized low humidity sensor simultaneously exhibits high response (47.5), small hysteresis (0.3 % RH), ultrafast response speed (0.2 s), high resolution (1 % RH), and excellent long-term stability (>120 days). In particular, the sensor has been proved to have potential applications in visual humidity detection and water source location. This work provides a preliminary design principle that will contribute to the preparation of high-performance low humidity sensing materials.

Pressure sensors are widely studied due to their ability to sense and measure force information. Polymer composites composed of polymer matrix and reinforcing materials are a key challenge to enhance sensing performance. However, in many experimental studies, cumbersome preparation and easy destruction of polystyrene (PS) and polyaniline (PANI) composites wrinkled microstructure during repeated compression/release process. Herein, we successfully prepared sea urchin-like PS/PANI composites by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization. Meanwhile, it is used as a pressure sensitive layer material to fabricate a novel type of pressure sensor. The ultra-wide detection range of 3 Pa–130 kPa and the high sensitivity of 7.773 kPa −1 were successfully achieved. The durability shows a long service lifetime of at least 6000 cycles. Finally, the excellent electrical stability and mechanical stability are successfully proved in the practical application of finger touch compression and micro-pressure water droplet test, which promotes the development of the next generation of high-performance flexible pressure sensors.

Hypoxia compromises host defense in fish by impairing macrophage function, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study elucidates the molecular mechanisms by which hypoxia disrupts monocytes/macrophages (MO/MФ) function in Japanese sea bass ( Lateolabrax japonicus ), with a particular focus on the regulatory role of heme biosynthesis and its key gene, 5'-aminolevulinate synthase 2 ( ALAS2 ). Phylogenetic analysis confirmed high evolutionary conservation of ALAS2 across vertebrates, supporting its fundamental role in heme metabolism. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that hypoxia induced the upregulation of genes involved in heme biosynthesis of MO/MФ, particularly ALAS2 . Functional assays demonstrated that heme accumulation under hypoxic conditions impaired MO/MФ phagocytic and bactericidal activities, while also promoted the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. These dysfunctions were mediated by the ALAS2 -heme signaling axis, which orchestrated inflammatory responses and metabolic reprogramming throughout the study. Knockdown of ALAS2 enhanced phagocytic activity and suppressed pro-inflammatory cytokine expression, suggesting its critical role in modulating MO/MФ function under hypoxia. Furthermore, inhibition of heme synthesis improved fish survival rates and reduced bacterial burdens during Vibrio harveyi infection. These findings elucidate the pivotal role of heme in regulating MO/MФ function and host defense under hypoxic conditions, providing mechanistic insights into hypoxia-induced immune suppression in aquaculture.

Sea cucumber peptides have been shown to possess a number of functions, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and anti-fatigue effects, as well as immune regulation and promotion of collagen synthesis. Among these, high F-value oligopeptides are a promising natural active ingredient demonstrating excellent anti-fatigue effects. This study utilized fresh sea cucumbers as the primary raw material, employing membrane separation technology to investigate the simultaneous separation of sea cucumber polysaccharides and peptides. The process for removing aromatic amino acids during the preparation of high F-value oligopeptides from sea cucumbers was optimized, and the mechanism underlying their anti-fatigue effects was explored. A two-step enzymatic hydrolysis method using neutral protease and composite flavor protease was employed, followed by membrane separation using a 10,000 Da molecular weight ultrafiltration membrane, yielding a sea cucumber peptide yield of 45.00 ± 0.12% and a sea cucumber polysaccharide yield of 51.28 ± 0.63%. Following the removal of aromatic amino acids by means of activated carbon adsorption, the F-value of the high-F-value oligopeptides attained 23.82, with a yield of 24.56%. The experimental findings demonstrated that high-F-value oligopeptides exhibited a substantial increase in the swimming duration of mice and a notable enhancement in their grip strength. These observations signified their substantial anti-fatigue potential. Furthermore, studies have indicated that sea cucumber high-F-value oligopeptides reduce metabolites produced by exercise, enhance muscle protection, increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the body, and alleviate fatigue, thereby achieving an anti-fatigue effect.

A highly sensitive molecular imprinting electrochemiluminescence (MIP-ECL) sensor was developed for Sudan III detection in food. The sensor utilized nitrogen-vacancy carbon nitride (CNNV) as an efficient ECL emitter in the S 2 O 8 2− system, with sea-urchin-like Pt Au nanoparticles (Pt Au NPs) and Ti 3 CN MXene serving as co-reaction accelerators and support material respectively to enhance signal intensity. Molecular imprinting was achieved using O -phenylenediamine (O-PD) as functional monomer, creating specific recognition sites for Sudan III. The detection mechanism was based on target-induced ECL quenching through electron transfer inhibition. The sensor showed excellent analytical performance with a wide linear range from 1 × 10 −12 to 1 × 10 −6 mol L −1 and an ultralow detection limit of 3.3 × 10 −13 mol L −1 (S/N = 3). Real sample analysis demonstrated good accuracy and precision. The sensor maintained 87.5% of initial response after 20-day storage, indicating good stability. This method provides a reliable approach for monitoring Sudan III in food.

Cathode materials with high capacity and cyclic durability are urgently needed for capacitive deionization . Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 is an emerging pseudocapacitive candidate for this process on account of its high capacity and Na + reversible insertion, while it suffers from the intrinsic low electrical conductivity and small electrolyte-accessible surface area. Herein, a sea urchin-like Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 @carbon (NVP@C) compound material was synthesized from MXene-V 2 C via hydrothermal method followed by annealing treatment, and then assembled as capacitive deionization (CDI) electrode material . Benefiting from three-dimensional sea urchin-like structure, where the nanoneedles of NVP@C serve as fast transport channel for Na + , NVP@C performed high specific capacity (437 F g −1 at 5 mV s −1 ) and fast ionic diffusion kinetics. Moreover, the NVP@C showed attractive desalination performance as cathode material for CDI, achieving a remarkable adsorption capacity of 74.0 mg g −1 in a NaCl salt solution (1000 mg L −1 ) and long life cycle stability. The present work provides a novel perspective to construct practical redox-active and stable CDI electrode with 3D structure from MXene for highly capacitive and durable desalination application .

The ocean is an important inventory of anthropogenic mercury (Hg), yet the history of anthropogenic Hg accumulation in the ocean remains largely unexplored. Deep-sea corals are an emerging archive of past ocean chemistry, which take in sinking or suspended particulate organic matter as their food sources. Such organic matter would exchange Hg with the local seawater before being consumed by the deep, sea corals. As such, the organics preserved in the coral skeleton may record the Hg evolution of the ambient seawater during the time of coral growth. Here, we report the first data on Hg concentrations variability of a deep-sea proteinaceous coral in the oligotrophic North Pacific at the water depth of 1 249 m, in attempt to understand the transfer of anthropogenic Hg into the deep Pacific ocean over the last seven centuries. We find that the Hg concentrations of different coral growth layers have remained relatively constant albeit with considerable short-term variability through time. The overall stable Hg concentration of the last seven centuries recorded in our sample suggests that anthropogenic pollution is not yet a clearly resolvable component in the deep oligotrophic North Pacific waters, in agreement with recent estimation from modelling works and observational studies of modern seawater profiles. As there is hardly an unambiguous way to separate anthropogenic Hg from the natural background based on recent seawater profiles, our historical data provide valuable information helping to understand the oceanic cycle of Hg through time.

Carbon cycle in coastal water is a significant dynamic component of global carbon budget , however, the diverse sources, carbon sinks and their complex interactions remained poorly understood. In order to detect the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and their interactions, gas-liquid Raman spectroscopy was built and applied to simultaneously detect the constituents of air, dissolved CO 2 , HCO 3 - and chlorophyll in coastal water. The linear fitting curve between peak intensity and concentration was built for the quantitative analysis of HCO 3 - and CO 2 , meanwhile, the fluorescence peaks of chlorophyll at 679 nm were detected for the qualitative analysis. For the multi-components analysis, typical Raman spectra of the constituents of air, dissolved CO 2 , HCO 3 - in seawater, and the fluorescence spectra of chlorophyll in seawater were detected. Results showed that the time dependent change of CO 2 and O 2 in the air exhibited a contrary tendency, while that of dissolved CO 2 and O 2 was curved like a cosine. The changing tendency of relative concentrations of dissolved CO 2 was about 2 h earlier than CO 2 in air, due to the life activity of microorganisms driving the gas exchange at the air-sea interface. Furthermore, the study makes a study on the relationship between DIC and chlorophyll based on the detection of HCO 3 - and chlorophyll in coastal water, indicating that this gas-liquid Raman spectroscopy could successfully provide real-time analysis of multicomponent DIC in the air-sea exchanging process.

An urchin-like NiCoSe₂/NC composite of transition metal selenide and N-doped carbon is derived from NiCo MOFs. • The NiCoSe₂/NC combines bimetallic synergy, heteroatom doping, dual carbon confinement and 3D conductive networks. • The NiCoSe₂/NC delivers high sodium storage capacity, outstanding cycling stability and rapid reaction kinetics. • The SIHCs based on NiCoSe 2 /NC exhibits good comprehensive performance and high energy-power characteristics. As a high-performance energy storage device, sodium-ion hybrid capacitors (SIHCs) still face the challenge of finding anode materials with fast kinetic behavior and stability to match capacitive electrode materials with fast kinetics. Transition metal selenides are expected to be ideal anode materials for batteries due to their high theoretical sodium storage capacity and fast ion diffusion rate. However, large volume change and poor conductivity hinder their practical application. In this paper, NiCo-bimetallic selenide embedded in N-doped porous carbon matrix (NiCoSe 2 /NC), presenting a spherical architecture similar to that of a sea urchin, was prepared by controllable selenization of NiCo-bimetallic organic framework. The synergistic effect between nickel‑cobalt selenides increases the sodium storage active sites and improves the conductivity and structural stability. The good conductive network and ion transport channel formed by N-doped hierarchically porous carbon can effectively improve the kinetic behavior, alleviate the volume change and maintain the structural stability of the material during the energy storage process. Consequently, the as-built SIHC based on the NiCoSe 2 /NC anode and home-made porous carbon cathode has high energy-power characteristics (113.1 Wh kg −1 /14 kW kg −1 ) and excellent cycle stability (98.6% capacity retention after 10,000 cycles at 1 A g −1 ), showing great potential for application in the energy storage field. Deep-sea microorganisms constitute a valuable source of structurally diverse natural products. In this study, an extracellular polysaccharide was isolated from the deep-sea fungus Beauveria bassiana T2-2 by ultrasonic-assisted hot water extraction followed by Sephadex LH-20 chromatography, yielding a fraction designated BPS-2. Physicochemical characterization revealed that BPS-2 is a glucose-rich polysaccharide (>90% molar ratio) with a weight-average molecular weight of approximately 3.62 kDa and moderate levels of uronic acid (2.84%) and sulfate (3.15%). In vitro enzyme assays demonstrated that BPS-2 inhibited α-amylase and α-glucosidase in a concentration-dependent manner, with an IC 50 value of 1.3 × 10 −4 M for α-glucosidase. Within the tested range, its inhibitory activity was stronger than that of Astragalus polysaccharide (APS) but weaker than that of acarbose. In a palmitic acid-induced insulin-resistant HepG2 model, BPS-2 significantly enhanced glucose consumption and increased 2-Deoxy-2-[(7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazol-4-yl) amino]-D-glucose (2-NBDG) uptake by 44.9% at 0.75 mg/mL without detectable cytotoxicity, suggesting a potential role in improving cellular glucose utilization under insulin-resistant conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report describing hypoglycemic-related activity of extracellular polysaccharides derived from deep-sea B. bassiana . These findings provide initial evidence linking the structural features of BPS-2 to glucose metabolism–associated bioactivity, while further studies are required to clarify detailed structural characteristics and underlying molecular mechanisms.
