Summary Grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) has health benefits. However, these phenolic compounds undergo degradation reactions and have undesirable sensorial characteristics. GSPE was encapsulated using sodium alginate (SA), SA-methyl cellulose (MC) and SA-hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) for promoting controlled release, pH stability, temperature and storage period tolerance of GSPE. The microcapsules were characterised using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) analysis. The SA-MC and SA-HPMC microcapsules appeared to have a more compact surface than SA-alone microcapsules. FTIR analysis indicated successful immobilisation of GSPE into the polymeric microcapsules. Moreover, the SA-MC and SA-HPMC microcapsules showed higher thermal stability. The microcapsules showed a relatively higher amount of released GSPE at a pH above six than at a lower pH. The SA-MC and SA-HPMC microcapsules could be used to retain more GSPE content in the gastric phase and to release it in the intestinal phase for possible absorption. Furthermore, after 28 days of storage at 25 °C, the GSPE retention rate of the microcapsules was still higher than 80%. GSPE encapsulated in SA-MC and SA-HPMC microcapsules results in lesser degradation and can be absorbed more effectively. This method has potential for the delivery of colon-specific materials while exhibiting a sustained-release characteristic.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes Ca 2+ overload, which can lead to inflammation and neuronal apoptosis. In this study, we prepared a nanovesicle derived from macrophage membrane (MVs), which encapsulated sodium alginate (SA) and naloxone (NAL) to inhibit inflammation and protect neurons by reducing the free Ca 2+ concentration at the SCI site. Based on the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image, the encapsulated sample (NAL–SA–MVs) had a particle size of approximately 134 ± 11 nm and exhibited a sustained release effect. The encapsulation rate of NAL and SA was 82.07% ± 3.27% and 72.13% ± 2.61% in NAL–SA–MVs, respectively. Targeting tests showed that the NAL–SA–MVs could accumulate in large quantities and enhance the concentration of SA and NAL at the lesion sites. In vivo and in vitro studies indicated that the NAL–SA–MVs could decrease the concentration of free Ca 2+ , which should further alleviate the inflammatory response and neuronal apoptosis. Anti-inflammation results demonstrated that the NAL–SA–MVs could reduce the pro-inflammation factors (iNOS, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6) and increase the expression of anti-inflammation factors (IL-10) at the cell and animal level. Concurrently, fluorescence, flow cytometry and western blot characterization showed that the apoptotic condition of the neurons was significantly inhibited. In addition, the motor function of C57 mice were significantly improved after NAL–SA–MVs treatment. In conclusion, it is suggested that the NAL–SA–MVs has tremendous potential in the treatment of SCI.

This study constructed ternary complexes of whey protein isolate (WPI), naringin (NAR), and sodium alginate (SA) and their stabilized emulsions, and characterized their physicochemical properties. The results confirmed interactions between NAR and SA with WPI, which induced quenching of WPI intrinsic fluorescence; formation of the ternary complexes could effectively inhibit WPI flocculation near its isoelectric point. Compared with the corresponding binary complexes, the WPI-NAR-SA ternary complexes developed more stable emulsions with smaller droplet sizes and higher absolute ζ-potential values, exhibiting superior storage stability that increased with SA concentration. After storage at 4 °C for 20 days, the emulsion system exhibited a peroxide value remaining below 4.7 μg/mL; after 9 days of UV irradiation, lutein retention reached 82.49%. Both protective effects increased with rising SA concentration. This study provides a strategy for the development of a novel functional emulsion delivery system.

A series of thermo-responsive PNIPAAm-CS/SA composite hydrogel films were synthesized via radical polymerization and ionic cross-linking. FTIR, XPS, and NMR confirmed the successful covalent grafting of PNIPAAm onto the chitosan (CS) backbone. XRD and SSNMR analyses revealed that the grafting disrupted the CS crystalline regions, inducing an amorphous structural transition. The PNIPAAm-CS copolymer solutions exhibited LCST values in the range of 30–32 °C. Notably, compared with the corresponding precursor systems, the hydrated films exhibited an apparent thermo-responsive transition onset approximately 1 °C higher in temperature-dependent optical measurements, suggesting that film-network formation influenced the thermal response behavior of the PNIPAAm-containing system. Grafting modification significantly improved optical and mechanical properties: PNIPAAm-CS/SA-4 achieved a peak transmittance of 82.81% (vs. 50.78% for pure CS/SA), while PNIPAAm-CS/SA-2 reached an optimal balance with 22.6 MPa tensile strength and ∼ 100% elongation. Furthermore, antibacterial evaluation of the PNIPAAm-CS copolymers showed that, although the inhibitory activity decreased with increasing PNIPAAm incorporation, measurable antibacterial effects against E. coli and S. aureus were retained. Together with the preliminary package-integrated visual response demonstration, these results suggest that the hydrated films may serve as candidate temperature-responsive indicator materials for further development in intelligent packaging.

Dust pollution threatens ecological stability and human health, but conventional suppressants suffer from short durability, high water demand, and toxicity. This study developed a bio-inspired bacterial/sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel (BSH) dust suppressant composed of Bacillus mucilaginosus (B.m), SA, and NaHCO3. Its application uses a two-step process: first spraying BSH for physical dust adhesion and then CaCl2 to supply Ca2+ ions. Carbonic anhydrase secreted by B.m catalyzes the hydration of ambient CO2 into CO32–, which reacts with Ca2+ to form CaCO3; NaHCO3 further enhances CO32– availability, promoting stable calcite and dust matrix consolidation. The BSH exhibits favorable interfacial properties: a low surface tension of 31 mN/m and strong wettability, with a contact angle of 60°. The hydrogel suppressant achieves a dust suppression efficiency of up to 99.76%, outperforming conventional formulations, and maintains >95% efficiency over a 7 day wind erosion trial, alongside superior water retention. This scalable, biodegradable hydrogel enables long-term dust mitigation and synergizes with greenhouse gas sequestration, shifting the paradigm from passive dust control to climate-friendly environmental management.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation is regarded as a sustainable and practical strategy for water purification; however, complex fabrication procedures, limited evaporation efficiency, and poor salt tolerance still restrict its practical application. In this work, a dual-layer biomass-based solar evaporator is developed through rational material selection and structural design. The evaporator consists of a polypyrrole-coated nickel foam photothermal layer fabricated by electrochemical deposition, coupled with a sodium alginate hydrogel layer featuring interconnected microchannels for continuous water transport and effective salt rejection. The hydrogel layer is prepared via a two-step ionic cross-linking process, which suppresses salt accumulation while ensuring stable water supply during evaporation. Owing to the synergistic integration of efficient light absorption and rapid water transport, the bilayer evaporator exhibits a high evaporation rate of 3.22 kg m–2 h–1 with a photothermal conversion efficiency of 92% under 1 sun irradiation. Notably, stable evaporation without observable salt accumulation is maintained during long-term operation in high-salinity brine, demonstrating excellent salt resistance. In addition, effective removal of representative organic dyes is achieved during wastewater treatment, with negligible contaminants detected in the collected condensate. These results highlight the strong potential of the polypyrrole/sodium alginate hydrogel (PSH) evaporator for practical solar-driven desalination and wastewater purification.

A CMCS-SA nanofiber biomembrane loaded with chlorogenic acid and astragalus polysaccharide was fabricated via electrospinning • The dual-active-loaded nanofiber biomembrane modulates oxidative stress and inflammatory response via NRF2/HO-1 signaling pathway • The nanofiber dressing accelerates diabetic wound repair by promoting collagen deposition and dermal tissue reconstruction • Natural-product-based electrospun nanofiber shows promising potential for diabetic wound healing application Background Chronic diabetic wounds are difficult to heal due to persistent oxidative stress, uncontrolled inflammation, cellular dysfunction, and impaired angiogenesis. Traditional dressings cannot actively regulate this complex microenvironment; thus, new active repair materials are urgently needed. Methods A dual-drug loaded nanofiber mat was constructed using carboxymethyl chitosan/sodium alginate (CMCS/SA) as the matrix, co -loaded with chlorogenic acid (CGA) and astragalus polysaccharide (APS) via electrospinning. Samples were characterized by SEM, etc. In vitro hemostatic, antibacterial, and cytocompatibility properties were evaluated. A full-thickness skin defect model in STZ-induced diabetic mice was used to evaluate healing efficacy. Mechanisms were explored using histology, immunofluorescence, Western blot, and flow cytometry. Results The nanofiber mat exhibited uniform structure, excellent hemostasis, water absorption, and antibacterial activity. In diabetic mice, it significantly accelerated wound closure, promoted granulation tissue formation, and enhanced re-epithelialization. Mechanistically, the material upregulated the NRF2/HO-1 pathway to eliminate ROS, inhibited NF-κB signaling to reduce TNF-α and IL-6, promoted macrophage polarization from M1 to M2, and enhanced angiogenesis and orderly collagen deposition. Conclusions This study successfully constructed a multifunctional nanofiber mat with synergistic effects of antioxidation, anti-inflammation, immune regulation, and tissue regeneration, providing a new strategy for diabetic wound treatment.

pH-tunable, reversible bidirectional bending in the electro-responsive oppositely charged polyelectrolyte Janus hydrogel. • EHD printing-in-situ photopolymerization strategy resolves CS/SA hydrogel performance bottlenecks. • Excellent mechanics (808.9% strain) and high ionic conductivity (13.81 × 10 −3 S/cm) integrated in the hydrogel. • Practical devices (soft gripper, biomimetic flower) validate broad applications in soft robotics. Polyelectrolyte hydrogels are ideal for soft actuators, but conventional chitosan/sodium alginate (CS/SA) ionic hydrogels face a critical trade-off among flexibility, ionic content, and actuation speed, hindering their practical applications. Herein, dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and sodium acrylate (AAS) were used to modify CS-based polycationic and SA-based polyanionic networks, respectively. A Janus polyelectrolyte hydrogel (PCDM/PSSM) with seamless interface was fabricated via one-pot synthesis, electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing, and in-situ photopolymerization. Microstructural characterization verified successful monomer grafting, amorphous/low-crystallinity networks, and robust interlocked interfaces. The hydrogel exhibited superior mechanical properties (PSSM achieving a tensile stress of 78.6 kPa and a strain of 775.6%, and PCDM achieving a tensile stress of 52.2 kPa and a strain of 808.9%, respectively), high ionic conductivity (13.81 × 10 −3 S/cm for PSSM), and efficient electro-actuation (155° bending at 10 V). Its core advantage is pH-programmable reversible bidirectional bending: −145° toward the polyanionic layer at pH = 2 and + 151° toward the polycationic layer at pH ≥ 7, originating from pH-regulated asymmetric swelling of protonated/deprotonated functional groups and enhanced by electric-field-induced ion migration. Demonstrated applications included an underwater soft gripper for fragile object manipulation and a biomimetic flower for pH-responsive petal closure. This work resolves the longstanding trade-off of CS/SA hydrogels and provides a scalable strategy for high-performance stimuli-responsive soft actuators, promising broad use in soft robotics, bioinspired systems, and biomedical engineering.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in agricultural soils poses serious risks to ecosystem health and food safety, highlighting the urgent need for efficient and environmentally stable immobilization materials. In this study, sodium alginate-based rectorite microspheres (REC beads) and triethylenetetramine-modified rectorite microspheres (TETA-REC beads) were fabricated and applied for the immobilization of Cd(II) in contaminated soils. Structural characterization confirmed that the ionic cross-linking encapsulation process preserved the layered structure of rectorite, while TETA modification introduced abundant amino functional groups that enhanced the interaction between the material and Cd(II). Immobilization experiments demonstrated that both microspheres exhibited rapid and stable Cd(II) passivation performance, with TETA-REC beads showing significantly higher efficiency. The maximum removal efficiencies of water-soluble and available Cd(II) reached 83.87% and 93.33%, respectively. Sequential extraction analysis revealed that the microspheres effectively transformed labile Cd fractions, including exchangeable and water-soluble forms, into more stable species. Mechanistic investigations indicated that Cd immobilization was governed by a synergistic combination of interlayer ion exchange, physical adsorption within the porous alginate structure, and coordination complexation between Cd(II) and amino groups introduced by TETA. Furthermore, microbial community analysis showed that the remediation process promoted the recovery of soil microbial diversity and metabolic functions. The developed TETA-REC microspheres provide a promising strategy for the efficient immobilization of Cd in contaminated soils and offer potential for the sustainable remediation of heavy metal-polluted farmland.

Carboxymethyl chitosan sodium salt (CMCS)/sodium alginate (SA), a pH-sensitive hydrogel composed of CMCS and SA crosslinked by 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) and N -hydroxysuccinimide, has been evaluated in vitro as a potential carrier for protein drug delivery of bovine serum albumin (BSA). The crosslinked structures, pore morphologies, and mechanical properties of the composite CMCS/SA hydrogel at different pH have been characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The swelling behavior of the prepared hydrogel was assessed at different pH values, 1.2, 4.0, 6.86, 7.4, and 9.0. The in vitro slow release ability of the CMCS/SA hydrogel was assessed at 37°C and pH 1.2 or pH 7.4 to simulate gastrointestinal and mouth environments in vivo . The efficiency was found to be greater than 90% at pH 7.4. The composite CMCS/SA hydrogel showed no cytotoxic effect toward L-929 cells according to the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide test. These findings demonstrate that the composite hydrogel has promising potential for drug delivery. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2019 , 136 , 46911.

The membrane-based CO 2 separation process has an advantage compared to traditional CO 2 separation technologies. The membrane is the key of the membrane separation process. In this paper, preparation, characterization and laboratory testing of the membrane, which was prepared from sodium alginate, hydrogen bond cross-linked with sodium tartrate and used for CO 2 /N 2 separation, were reported. The resistance to SO 2 of the membrane was also investigated. The experimental results demonstrate that the membrane possesses a high resistance to SO 2 . Finally, based on experimental results, the economic feasibility of the membrane used for CO 2 /N 2 separation was evaluated, indicating the two-stage membrane process can compete with the traditional chemical absorption method.

Oral probiotic efficacy is often limited by poor bioavailability and restricted intestinal colonization due to harsh and variable gastrointestinal conditions, as well as complex gut microbiota. To address this, a core-shell delivery system was developed based on carboxyl-activated silk fibroin nano-fiber microcarriers (SFMs) coated with sodium alginate. Bacillus subtilis (Bs) was loaded onto SFMs, followed by carboxyl group activation via EDC/NHS chemistry and coating with a sodium alginate out-layer (Bs-SFMs@SA). As expected, the SFMs successfully supported the loading and proliferation of the probiotics and carboxyl activation enhanced the intestinal adhesion of SFMs. The sodium alginate coating provided protection against gastric fluid degradation in vitro/vivo, thereby significantly enhancing probiotic viability. Compared to individual probiotics, these probiotic-loaded microcarriers formed colonies, which enhanced colonization efficiency and functionality within the gastrointestinal tract through synergistic interactions and the creation of a protective, cooperative niche. Bs-SFMs@SA system increased Firmicutes D (Bacilli) abundance, enhanced metabolic synergy and microbial connectivity, and promoted host commensal bacterial growth, thereby alleviating pathological progression in enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli & Dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis. The Bs-SFMs@SA system harnessed silk fibroin microcarriers to form robust probiotic colonies, resulting in significantly higher gut colonization efficiency compared to the dispersed probiotics typically found in other delivery systems or commercialized capsules.
