Multidrug resistance (MDR) remains as an obstacle for effective cancer treatment. Herein, we developed a novel and efficient nanomedicine by virtue of the carrier characters and MDR inhibition effects of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and d-α-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol succinate (TPGS). A series of star-shaped polymers CD-g-TPGS with different TPGS substitution degree were synthesized for doxorubicin (DOX) delivery, where β-CD was identified as a core and TPGS as branches. These star polymers can self-assemble into nanoparticles with DOX . These nanoparticles showed no significant differences in size, zeta potential and morphology except for in vitro stability. They demonstrated good biocompatibility and enhanced cellular uptake in both drug sensitive and resistant cancer cells. Notably, the nanoparticles exhibited superiority of cytotoxicity in drug resistant cancer cells against free DOX . In vivo antitumor effect also demonstrated the improved cancer inhibition effect. This work suggests that star-shaped polymers CD-g-TPGS are promising drug carriers to overcome MDR in cancer treatment.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are universally detected in natural waters, posing potential risks to drinking water safety. Nanofiltration (NF) is an advanced technology for water purification; however, its removals of PPCPs are unsatisfying, especially for hydrophobic species. In this study, the 3D architecture of nanomaterials were used to manipulate the performance the polyamide (PA) thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane. In-situ addition of polyethyleneimine (PEI) successfully induced the assembly of ZIF-8 nanocrystals into star-shaped clusters (ZIF-8-PEI) due to the coordination between PEI and Zn 2+ . Together with the improved hydrophilicity, these ZIF-8-PEI clusters became excellent scaffolds for water drop retention after discretely loading onto the porous substrate. The conical protrusions of the ZIF-8-PEI clusters supported the defect-free PA film produced by the interfacial polymerization (IP), leaving big interfacial cavities underneath. These cavities worked as gutters for water transport, and the water permeance of the optimal TFN was 79% higher than that of the pristine thin-film composite (TFC) membrane. Moreover, the water impregnated cavities markedly alleviated the hydrophobic interaction between the PA film and hydrophobic PPCPs, impeding the transport of PPCPs across the membrane. Our results demonstrated the importance of the 3D architecture of nanofillers for the improving membrane performance.

Thermally conductive adhesives have attracted considerable attention in recent years due to their dual functions in promoting interfacial bonding and thermal transfer. A great number of strategies have been explored for producing them. However, most of them are based on irreversible covalent cross-linking resins, which are difficult to be recycled. Herein, we demonstrate a strategy for in situ producing high-performance, recyclable thermal adhesives from common stocks with a reversibly cross-linkable hyperbranched-star copolymer, HBPE@PSF. The copolymer possesses a hyperbranched polyethylene core covalently bearing multiple polystyrene side chains with small amount of furan moieties, which can be synthesized from commercially available ethylene and styrene as the main monomers. As a stabilizer, the copolymer can effectively promote the exfoliation of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) in chloroform under sonication to render high-quality boron nanosheets (BNNSs). Moreover, some of the copolymer can be irreversibly adsorbed on the BNNS surface based on the noncovalent CH−π and π–π interactions. From the resultant nanofiller, BNNS/HBPE@PSF composite adhesives have been successfully prepared through an in situ solution cast process directly with the copolymer as the matrix. After the cross-linking via the Diels–Alder reaction, the resultant adhesives simultaneously exhibit excellent interfacial bonding, thermal transfer, and recyclability, despite their extremely low furan content, 0.30 mol %. This has been confirmed to originate from the unique chain structure of the copolymer, which can form a hyperbranched-star, reversibly cross-linking structure in the composite system. The composite adhesives obtained herein may find their important applications as thermal interface materials in the areas of various electronic products.

As the main cause of destructive plant diseases, pathogenic oomycete in plant rhizosphere brings about enormous losses to agricultural production. Although chemical pesticides are still one of the most important prevention and control methods for phytopathogens, the usage of chemical pesticides was limited by the 3R (resistance, residue, and rampant) problem. In the early stage of our research, analysis and comparison of the metabolome of resistance to Phytophthora nicotianae and common strain suggested that naringenin might be a highly efficient potential biogenic antimicrobial agent to prevent and control soil rhizosphere diseases. Unfortunately, the bioactivity and absorption capacity of active ingredients in the environment made it unsuitable for field application; thus, for efficient field application of naringenin, the 24 nm-sized naringenin-loaded nano- star -shaped polymerized (NSPs) were prepared with good loading efficiency 37.3% for naringenin. The soil mobility test indicated that NSPs could effectively reduce the adsorption of active ingredients and enhance the mobility of active ingredients in soil. The bacteriostatic test proved that these NSPs had better antimicrobial activity than the naringenin used alone and could efficiently induce the expression of plant resistance phenylpropanoid compounds. Finally, pot and field experiments showed improved control efficiency of NSPs 41% loaded with naringenin. Transcriptome analysis found that a large number of energy-related genes were downregulated in NSPs nematodes, suggesting that disturbed energy-related genes might lead to the disturbance of energy synthesis and metabolism. Naringenin-loaded nano-carriers were used to prevent and control plant disease-causing pathogens in the rhizosphere, which is of great significance to improve the prevention and control effect and reduce the environmental load of these anti-pathogenic agents.

Poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) is a bio-based biodegradable polymer with minimal immunogenicity, non-toxicity and excellent mechanical properties and has widely used in medical, pharmaceutical, food packaging and other fields. However, linear PLLA has the characteristics of high melting point, strong crystallinity, weak flowability and poor thermal stability, which cannot meet the requirements of various industrial processes and novel pharmaceutical formulations. With its low viscosity, controlled degradation cycle, and excellent melt flowability, star-shaped PLLA can be used in the fields of biocomposites, biomedical devices, drug delivery, and intelligent packaging. Presently, metal catalysts and organic solvents are frequently used in PLLA synthesis industries, and both residues continue to pose a safety risks. In existing studies, the performance of bioenzymes as optimal green catalysts in organic solvents is not satisfactory, and they are predominantly used to synthesise oligomers with low yields and lengthy reaction times. In this study, a four-armed star-shaped poly (L-lactic acid) (4s-PLLA) with a porous structure favourable for drug loading was synthesised using supercritical carbon dioxide (Sc-CO 2 ) as a solvent, lipase as a catalyst, and erythritol as a nucleus. Using Sc-CO 2 as a solvent the reaction activity and stability of the enzyme were increased so that the reaction yield could reach 83% and the reaction time was only 24 h, which provided a possibility for the practical application of the enzymes catalyze green process. Both the random copolymerization product four-armed star-shaped poly(L-lactic-glycolic acid) (4s-PLGA) and the block copolymerization product four-armed star-shaped poly (L-lactic-glycolic acid) (4s-PLLA-PGA) were subsequently synthesized by copolymerization modification, and their porous structures retained and hydrophilicity were enhanced. The response surface analyses were performed about the reaction time, reaction temperature and yield of synthetic reactions by using Design-Expert 12 software and the prediction equations were generated.

Invasion and metastasis of tumor cells is one of the major obstacles in cancer therapy. The process of tumor metastasis and diffusion is coordinated by multiple pathways associated with chemokine signals and migration microenvironment. In our previous work, chemokine CXC receptor 4 (CXCR4) antagonists showed significant anti-metastatic effects by blocking the CXCR4/stromal cell-derived factor-1(SDF-1) axis in pancreatic cancer and breast cancer. Here, we proposed to achieve migration chain-treatment for metastatic tumors by introducing a cell adhesion molecules CD44 inhibitor (Star miR-34a) to deprive of cell migration capability on the basis of CXCR4 antagonism (cyclam monomer , CM). Dextrin modified 1.8 k PEI with CM-end was prepared to deliver therapeutic miR-34a (named DPC/miR-34a) for efficient anti-metastasis by downregulating adhesion protein CD44 and targeting the CXCR4/SDF-1 axis. Additionally, reduced expression of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl2 caused by miR-34a could enhance the anti-tumor efficacy of DPC/miR-34a nanoplex administration. Compared with inhibition of the CXCR4/SDF-1 axis or CD44 expression, the multidimensional therapy (DPC/miR-34a) exhibited considerable suppression of cancer cell invasion as assessed by an in vitro cell invasion assay and in vivo anti-metastasis model. Moreover, DPC/miR-34a demonstrated a superior antitumor and anti-metastatic efficacy both in lung metastatic model and orthotopic MDA-MB-231 tumor models, thus providing an efficient approach for combating metastatic tumors.

To overcome the thermodynamic instability of polymeric micelles in an extremely high dilution bio-environment, unimolecular micelles with covalently-bound molecular architectures have been widely studied for drug delivery. In this work, an amphiphilic multi-arm star random copolymer, polyamidoamine-poly(butenyl phospholane-co-methoxy phospholane) with phenylboronic acid end groups (abbreviated as PAMAM-P(BEP-co-MP)-PBA), was synthesized by a simple one-pot ring-opening polymerization with the fourth-generation PAMAM dendrimer as a macro-initiator. Then, unimolecular micelles (UMs) were formed by the obtained copolymers in a dilute aqueous solution. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results showed that the UMs possess uniform spherical structures and stable hydrodynamic sizes (ca. 20 nm). Besides, further information on polymer repeat unit numbers could be theoretically calculated by comparison of hydrodynamic sizes and contour lengths. Doxorubicin (DOX) could be encapsulated into the inner hydrophobic regions of the UMs. The obtained DOX-loaded UMs exhibited a slow and sustainable release behavior in an intracellular simulated environment. Furthermore, in vitro cytotoxicity and cellular uptake studies demonstrated that the DOX-loaded UMs could specifically recognize and accumulate in HepG2 cells, and then inhibit tumor cell growth effectively. Therefore, this PBA-functionalized unimolecular micelle could be a promising candidate for targeted drug delivery.

Star-shaped copolymers based on star-shaped poly (L-lactide) (s-PLLA) and tocopheryl polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate (TPGS) (s-PLLA-TPGS) were synthesized with structural variation on arm numbers in order to investigate the relationship between the arm numbers of s-PLLA-TPGS copolymers and their micelle properties. The structure and M w of s-PLLA-TPGS were characterized with 1 H NMR, GPC, DSC, and XRD. The indometacin(IMC)-loaded s-PLLA-TPGS micelles were obtained by dialysis method. The effects of arm numbers of s-PLLA-TPGS copolymers on surface morphology, particle size, zeta potential, drug loading content (LC), drug encapsulation efficiency (EE), and in vitro drug release behavior of prepared micelles were studied. The results indicated that the average diameters, LC, and EE of IMC-loaded s-PLLA-TPGS micelles gradually increased in the order of 4-arm, 5-arm, and 6-arm s-PLLA-TPGS copolymers. The in vitro release studies showed that the IMC accumulative release can be decreased by increasing the arm numbers of the s-PLLA-TPGS copolymers, and the release profiles of IMC from the s-PLLA-TPGS copolymers followed the Baker-Lonsdale model equation. The results suggest that the arm number regulation of s-PLLA-TPGS copolymers can provide a new strategy for designing drug carriers of high efficiency.

In this work, a novel kind of temperature-responsive core cross-linked star (CCS) polymer, composing of poly(methoxypolyethylene glycol-co-di(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether acrylate) (P(PEGA-DEGA)) as thermo-responsive arm and poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) as functional core, was developed as nanoreactor for immobilizing gold nanoparticles for smart catalyst with facile recovery. The protonated imino groups in CCS polymer core could capture AuCl 4 - and simultaneously reduce it to Au NPs in aqueous solution, leading to the formation of P(PEGA-DEGA) CCS@Au composite. The whole procedure was carried out in aqueous media without using any toxic reducing agent, which is facile, efficient and green. The as-prepared CCS@Au composite exhibit a superior high catalytic activity for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), owing to that the soluble polymeric arms of the CCS polymers provides a homogeneous reaction system with fast mass transfer and thus facilitates interactions between Au NPs in the core and 4-NP. In addition, temperature-responsive catalyzing behavior was observed for the CCS@Au composite: the reaction rate enhanced with the elevation of the reaction temperature at first, but decreased when the temperature increased close to the LCSTs of the CCS@Au catalysts.

A star-like hyperbranched β-cyclodextrin is designed and synthesized for the solid polymer electrolyte of all-solid-state sodium batteries by grafting β-cyclodextrin with multiple oligo(methyl methacrylate)- block -oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate short chains. Complexing this star-like hyperbranched β-cyclodextrin with sodium trifluomethanesulfonate salt leads to a self-standing, transparent, and flexible solid polymer electrolyte film. It is found that this solid polymer electrolyte exhibits superior thermal stability, excellent mechanical properties at the even elevated temperature and good interfacial stability against Na metal electrode. Especially, ascribing to the unique three-dimensional structure of the star-like hyperbranched β-cyclodextrin, a solid polymer electrolyte formed with the optimized star-like hyperbranched β-cyclodextrin containing 69.3 wt.% oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate shows an ionic conductivity of 1.3 × 10 −4 S cm -1 at 60 °C and a wide electrochemical window of 5.2 V vs. Na + /Na, which are superior to those of the previously reported solid polymer electrolytes. The all-solid-state Na/NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 cell shows high first discharge capacity (102.4 mAh g −1 at 0.1C), good reversibility and excellent cycling performance (with 87.8% capacity retention after 80 cycles at 0.1C) at 60 °C. All the results indicate that the star-like hyperbranched β-cyclodextrin is a promising polymer for the solid polymer electrolyte of all-solid-state sodium batteries.

A new hyperbranched multi-arm star polymer with hyperbranched polystyrene (HBPS) as core and polymethyl methacrylate-block-poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate(PMMA- b -PPEGMA) as arms was firstly synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. The obtained hyperbranched multi-arm star polymer (HBPS-(PMMA- b -PPEGMA) x ) exhibited good thermal stability with a thermal decomposition temperature of 372 °C. The transparent, free-standing, flexible polymer electrolyte film of the blending of HBPS-(PMMA- b -PPEGMA) x and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI) was successfully fabricated by a solution casting method. The ionic conductivity of the hyperbranched star polymer electrolyte with a molar ratio of [EO]/[Li] of 30 could reach 8.3 × 10 −5 S cm −1 at 30 °C (with the content of PPEGMA of 83.7%), and 2.0 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 80 °C (with the content of PPEGMA of 51.6%). The effect of the concentration of lithium salts on ionic conductivity was also investigated. The obtained all-solid-state polymer electrolyte possessed a wide electrochemical stability window of 4.7 V ( vs. Li + /Li), and a lithium-ion transference number ( t Li + ) up to 0.31. The interfacial impedance of the fabricated Li│polymer electrolyte│Li symmetric cell based on hyperbranched star multi-arm polymer electrolyte exhibited good interfacial compatibility between all-solid-state polymer electrolyte and electrodes. The excellent properties of the hyperbranched star polymer electrolyte made it attractive as solid-state polymer electrolyte for lithium-ion batteries.

The co-delivery of drug and gene has become the primary strategy in cancer therapy. Based on our previous work, to co-deliver docetaxel (DOC) and MMP-9 siRNA more efficiently for HNE-1 nasopharyngeal carcinoma therapy, a folate-modified star-shaped copolymer (FA-CD-PLLD) consisting of β-cyclodextrin (CD) and poly(L-lysine) dendron (PLLD) was synthesized, and then used for DOC and MMP-9 co-delivery. Different from commonly used amphiphilic copolymers micelles, the obtained CD derivative could be used directly for the combinatorial delivery of nucleic acid and hydrophobic DOC without a complicated micellization process. In vitro and in vivo assays are carried out to confirm the effectiveness of the target strategy and combined treatment. It was found that the conjugation of CD-PLLD with FA could enhance the DOC/MMP-9 delivery effect obviously, inducing a more significant apoptosis and decreasing invasive capacity of HEN-1 cells. In vivo assays showed that FA-CD-PLLD/DOC/MMP-9 could inhibit HNE-1 tumor growth and decrease PCNA expression effectively, indicating a promising strategy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma therapy. Moreover, the in vivo distribution of DOC and MMP-9, blood compatibility and toxicity are also explored.
