The intricate contaminants in wastewater, such as organic dyes, pathogenic bacteria, and immiscible oils, have led to significant environmental challenges. These pollutants are detrimental to both ecological systems and human well-being and cannot be effectively removed through wastewater purification using a single material or process. To address this issue, a multifunctional three-dimensional porous polyurethane (PU) sponge was designed. In this research, surface coating technology was applied to modify PU sponge through a facile impregnation method with the addition of a mixed solution containing tannic acid (TA) and aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). Owing to the presence of secondary active reaction sites in the TA–APTES coating, TA–APTES@PU could function as a reactive substrate, facilitating subsequent modifications. TA–APTES@PU was first directly immersed in silver ammonium solution for the reduction of silver ions. Ag nanoparticles can be uniformly distributed and immobilized in situ on TA–APTES@PU, which was accomplished by the residual hydroxyl groups in the TA–APTES coating. The resultant Ag@TA–APTES@PU showed superior catalytic activities in the reduction of organic dye contaminants in aqueous solutions, achieving complete degradation of RhB within 4 minutes, with an apparent rate constant (kapp) of 1.1829 min−1. Ag@TA–APTES@PU also showed excellent antibacterial activities against both gram-positive and gram-negative pathogenic bacteria. TA–APTES@PU was subsequently modified with a low-surface-energy chemical octadecylamine (ODA), converting the TA–APTES coating directly into a superhydrophobic coating (ODA@TA–APTES@PU), which was suitable for treating oily wastewater. Furthermore, Ag@TA–APTES@PU and ODA@TA–APTES@PU also exhibited remarkable recyclability in the context of dye reduction and oil–water separation, respectively. The results indicated that the TA–APTES coating could serve as an excellent platform for the fabrication of multifunctional materials with desirable properties, making it a highly potential option for the treatment of water contaminated by dyes, bacteria, and oils.

Rapid, room-temperature, and scalable fabrication of the membrane is achieved. • The membrane exhibits excellent crude-oil antifouling ability and underwater superoleophobicity. • The membrane shows high permeation flux and excellent separation efficiency for various oil-in-water emulsions, including crude oil emulsion. • The emulsion permeation flux of the membrane almost maintains zero attenuation during long-term operation for n-hexane emulsion (3 h) and even crude oil emulsion (1 h). • The membrane remains stable after prolonged immersion in acidic, alkaline, and saline solutions. Despite the critical importance of efficient oily wastewater separation, practical implementation remains severely constrained by severe fouling, low membrane flux, and challenges in scalable production. Consequently, the rapid and scalable fabrication of superhydrophilic membranes with superior antifouling performance has become an urgent priority for treating large quantities of oily wastewater. Herein, we employed a polyphenol-metal dual autocatalytic system to rapidly and efficiently fabricate a high-throughput, anti-fouling, and scalable PDMAPAA gel @TA-APTES@PVDF hydrogel composite membrane under mild conditions. Endowed with the TA-APTES micro-nano structure and the PDMAPAA hydrogel layer, the membrane achieves high water flux (over 40000 L∙m −2 ∙h −1 ∙bar −1 ), excellent emulsion flux (over 5500 L∙m −2 ∙h −1 ∙bar −1 ) and exceptional oil-water separation efficiency (over 99.50%). The emulsion flux shows almost maintains zero attenuation during long-term operation for the n-hexane emulsion (3 h) and even the crude oil emulsion (1 h). The membrane also has excellent underwater anti-adhesion properties for crude oil. Crude oil adhered to the membrane surface can be readily removed by simple water immersion. What’s more, the membrane exhibits exceptional chemical stability, conferring robust resistance to acidic, alkaline, and saline environments. Although Ta 4 HfC 5 ceramic has a highest melting point reported, it ablates rapidly in oxidative environment because Ta 2 O 5 has a low melting point of 1872 °C. In this work, ultrafine Ta-Hf-C solid-solution powders (49∼70 nm) with tunable Ta/Hf ratio were synthesized via a solvothermal route combined with carbothermal reduction using a liquid-phase precursor. Ta-Hf-C solid-solution bulks with relative densities of 98–99% were subsequently obtained by an ultra-fast pressure sintering technique. The effects of Ta/Hf ratio on densification behavior, mechanical properties, and oxidation–ablation resistance were systematically evaluated. Among all compositions, the 1TaC-4HfC ceramic exhibited the lowest mass and linear ablation rates of 0.422 mg/s and 14.237 μm/s after 120 s exposure to laser irradiation at a heat flux of 30 MW/m 2 , with a surface temperature up to 3800 °C. During ablation, a dense protective oxide layer formed through the reaction between HfO 2 and Ta 2 O 5 , generating Hf 6 Ta 2 O 17 coatings on the HfO 2 framework, while molten Ta 2 O 5 acted as a liquid bonding phase to wet and integrate the oxide phases with the residual carbide skeleton. This synergistic HfO 2 /Hf 6 Ta 2 O 17 /Ta 2 O 5 composite structure effectively suppressed oxygen permeation and enhanced high-temperature stability above 3000 °C.

Membrane fouling, especially the composite pollution caused by inorganic scaling and biological fouling, is a key challenge in the treatment of underground karst water with high salinity and high hardness. This study reports a polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane modified by molybdenum disulfide-tannic acid@copper ions (MoS2-TA@Cu2+) bionanomaterial. By blending MoS2-TA@Cu2+ nanoparticles into the PES matrix, the membrane's structure and comprehensive properties were systematically controlled. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and static water contact angle measurements were employed to characterize the morphology and surface properties of the membranes. Characterization analysis confirmed that the hydrophilicity of the modified membrane was enhanced (the water contact angle [WCA] was reduced from 69° to 56°), and it showed high antibacterial properties (the antibacterial rate against Escherichia coli [E. coli] reached 95%). The core contribution of this study is to systematically elucidate the tunable trade-off mechanism between key membrane properties dominated by nanoparticle loading. Specifically, a loading capacity of 10 g/m2 achieved optimal anti-fouling stability, with a flux recovery rate (FRR) as high as 81.5% (40.5% higher than that of the original membrane). In contrast, a loading capacity of 15 g/m2 showed the superior permeation and separation performance, with a turbidity removal rate of 92.9% in actual karst water and a silt density index (SDI) reduction value of 5.3, fully meeting the stringent requirements of reverse osmosis pretreatment. Both static and dynamic anti-fouling experiments confirmed its excellent performance, with the CaCO3 scaling amount reduced by up to 65.2%. This study provides an effective strategy for the development of multifunctional UF membranes that can cope with complex water quality challenges by revealing the inherent trade-off between separation efficiency and anti-fouling stability. This paper provides the key theoretical basis and practical guidance for the precise design of high-performance multifunctional membranes.

As a widely used alternative to the conventional per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), hexafluoropropylene oxide trimer acid (HFPO-TA) is of growing concern due to its toxicity and potential risks to human health. Water quality criteria of HFPO-TA for protecting human health were established, and 412 ng/L was set as the maximum concentration level for groundwater ( MCL gw ) to calculate the soil control value to protect groundwater ( CVS pgw ). Utilizing recommended default values for the properties of HFPO-TA and the soil, the generic CVS pgw value of 24.0 μg/kg was obtained. Subsequently, column experiments were conducted to investigate the transport of HFPO-TA in the site soil of a fluorochemical industrial park (FIP) in China. The resulted retardation factor ( R ) was applied to derive the site-specific CVS pgw , and a value of 2.48 μg/kg was obtained. Using the experimentally measured R instead of the default empirical values reduced the uncertainties in deriving the CVS pgw dramatically. The transport of 13 PFAS in the soil as a mixture was investigated and revealing a significant linear correlation between R and organic carbon-water partition coefficient ( K OC ) ( r 2 = 0.991, p < 0.01), which was utilized to predicted R values for PFAS compounds. Comparison to the site-specific CVS pgw , HFPO-TA in the soil near the FIP may pose a risk to the groundwater quality. HFPO-TA concentrations in the groundwater of certain areas around the FIP were higher than MCL gw and not recommended for directly consumption, while HFPO-TA in the tap water was at the safe level.

We study the interface properties of CsPbBr3/Nb2O5 and CsPbBr3/Ta2O5 heterojunctions for structural, electronic, and optical characteristics. First-principles calculations were performed to analyze interfacial binding energy, electronic local function (ELF), charge density difference, and electrostatic potential. Four interface configurations were constructed based on CsPbBr3 (100) and M2O5 (001) terminations, revealing that the PbBr/TaO interface exhibits the highest binding energy (0.0073 eV Å−2), indicating superior stability. Charge transfer calculations demonstrate electron migration from CsPbBr3 to M2O5, forming an internal electric field that promotes charge separation. ELF and charge density difference maps highlight strong covalent interactions at the interfaces, particularly in the PbBr/TaO interface. Experimental characterization via XRD, SEM, TEM and XPS confirms successful heterojunction formation with preserved crystallinity. These findings provide theoretical and experimental insights into optimizing M2O5-based electron transport layers to enhance PSC efficiency and stability.

Porous materials with excellent mechanical stability and robust superhydrophobic performance exhibit promising prospect for practical applications in the field of oil−water separation. The construction of superhydrophobic surfaces typically involve two individual steps, including increase surface roughness and decrease surface energy. Unlike traditionally approach, the superhydrophobic performance of modified PU sponge can be accomplished by one−pot approach, which does not require complicated processing procedures or specific equipment. The present study successfully developed a superhydrophobic porous PU sponge using a facile and cost−effective one−pot approach by employing tannic acid (TA), 3–aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), and octadecyltrimethoxysilane (ODTS) as superhydrophobic modifiers. The water contact angle of the modified PU sponge was determined approximately 152.3 °, suggesting its superhydrophobic characteristic. The modified PU sponge showed remarkable environmental tolerance when subjected to a wide pH range of acidic and alkaline solutions. The WCAs remained consistently above 150°, indicating its durability and stability against harsh circumstances. The superhydrophobic PU sponge also demonstrated remarkable of self−cleaning and antifouling capacities. The obtained sponge exhibited an impressive selective oil adsorption capacity from oil−water mixtures, ranging from 18.7 to 88.4 times of its initial mass, depending on the specific type of oil utilized in the test. The sponge still maintained its excellent adsorption capacity even after 20 cycles of adsorption–squeezing experiment. Immiscible oil−water mixtures with different densities could also be highly effectively separated by the superhydrophobic PU sponge in a continuous way. The separation efficiencies for diesel/water and chloroform/water were determined to be 98.5 % and 99.5 %, respectively, demonstrating outstanding levels of continuous separation effectiveness. With the readily available PU sponge as substrate material and the simple modification process, this work could provide a potential pathway for fabrication of cost−effective, long durable, and high efficient superhydrophobic materials in oil/water separation.

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides and/or nitrides, MXenes, are prepared by selective etching of the A-site atomically thin metal layers from their MAX phase precursors. High entropy MXenes, the most recent subfamily of MXenes, are in their infancy and have attracted great interest recently. They are currently synthesized mainly through wet chemical etching of Al-containing MAX phases, while various MAX phases with A-sites elements other than Al have not been explored. It is important to embody non-Al MAX phases as precursors for the high entropy MXenes synthesis to allow for new compositions. In this work, it is reported on the design and synthesis of Ga-containing medium/high entropy MAX phases and then their corresponding medium/high entropy MXenes. Gallium atomic layer etching is carried out using a Lewis acid molten salt (CuCl2). The as-prepared (Ti 1/4 V 1/4 Nb 1/4 Ta 1/4 ) 2 CT x exhibits a Li + specific capacity of ≈400 mAh g −1 . For (Ti 1/5 V 1/5 Nb 1/5 Ta 1/5 Mo 1/5 ) 2 CT x a specific capacity of 302 mAh g −1 is achieved after 300 cycles, and high cycling stability is observed at high current densities. This work is of great significance for expanding the family members of MXenes with tunable chemistries and structures.

Addition of Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets into epoxy matrix is crucial for improving the mechanical and anti-corrosion properties, depending on their unique structures and properties. However, randomly-arranged Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets failed to meet higher corrosion protection requirements especially under alternating hydrostatic pressure (AHP) environment. Herein, inspired by the unique structure of mille crepe cake, the tannic acid (TA)-functionalized Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets were distributed parallelly in the epoxy matrix using a simple blade-coating method to form layer-by-layer (LBL) coating. Particularly, epoxy matrix incorporated with TA@Ti 3 C 2 T x exhibited a nearly perfect internal parallel arrangement structure due to shear force during blade-coating, excellent compatibility, and higher binding force. As being immersed 60 days at 1 atm and 240 h at 20 MPa AHP in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, the worst frequency impedance values was enhanced by 1–3 orders of magnitude for the parallel alignment in comparison to the randomly-arranged TA@Ti 3 C 2 T x composite coating. The results were mainly due to the fact that parallelly-arranged TA@Ti 3 C 2 T x could maximize tortuosity and got the utmost out of the barrier properties of composite coating. Moreover, electrochemical characterization of defects and Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations results proved that TA could react with Q235 steel in three ways to form ferric-tannates, which could further prevent the corrosion of steel. Prospectively, the parallelly alignment of TA@Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets in epoxy would greatly increase the corrosion resistance of composite coating, especially suitable for AHP environment.

In this study, we have successfully prepared a freeze-resistant conductive hydrogel with a fast polymerization rate and excellent mechanical and adhesive properties. In this paper, hydrogels capable of rapid polymerization in a short time were prepared based on the TA@WSCA-Zn (WSCA, water-soluble cellulose acetate; TA@WSCA, tannic acid-coated WSCA suspension; TA@WSCA-Zn, a certain amount of zinc chloride (ZnCl 2 ) was added to TA@WSCA suspension;) autocatalytic system at room temperature or low temperature. TA@WSCA-Zn forms a stable reversible quinone-catechol redox reaction to activate the decomposition of ammonium persulfate (APS, initiator) to produce SO 4 −· radicals, which triggers the ultra-fast polymerization of amphoteric ([2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl), SBMA) and acrylic monomers (AA). To improve the frost resistance and electrical conductivity of the hydrogels, we also introduced amphoteric ions, which can provide migration channels for Zn 2+ and greatly increase the migration rate. The TA@WSCA-7.5/PSA hydrogel (PSA, hydrogel prepared by polymerization of acrylic acid and SBMA as monomers;) can achieve tensile strength and toughness of 1.33 MPa and 4.89 MJ m −3 . It can provide excellent electrical conductivity and interfacial adhesion over a temperature range of 25 to −60 °C. In addition, the supercapacitor assembled from the TA@WSCA-7.5/PSA hydrogel electrolyte still has good capacitance characteristics after folding and 10,000 charge/discharge cycles, with a capacitance retention of 93.33 % and an excellent cycle life. This autocatalytic system provides a new strategy and approach for the preparation of freeze-resistant conductive hydrogel electrolytes.

Bacterial infection is a critical factor in wound healing. Due to the abuse of antibiotics, some pathogenic bacteria have developed resistance. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop a non-antibiotic-dependent multifunctional wound dressing for the treatment of bacteria-infected wounds. In this work, a multifunctional AOCuT hydrogel embedded with CuS@TA-Fe nanoparticles (NPs) through Schiff base reaction between gelatin quaternary ammonium salt – gallic acid (O-Gel-Ga) and sodium dialdehyde alginate (ADA) along with electrostatic interactions with CuS@TA-Fe NPs is prepared. These composite hydrogels possess favorable injectability, rapid shape adaptation, electrical conductivity, photothermal antimicrobial activity, and biocompatibility. Additionally, the doped NPs not only impart fast self-healing properties and excellent adhesion performance to the hydrogels, but also provide excellent peroxide-like properties, enabling them to scavenge free radicals and exhibit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capabilities via photothermal (PTT) and photodynamic (PDT) effects. In an S. aureus infected wound model, the composite hydrogel effectively reduces the expression level of wound inflammatory factors and accelerates collagen deposition, epithelial tissue, and vascular regeneration, thereby promoting wound healing. This safe and synergistic therapeutic system holds great promise for clinical applications in the treatment of infectious wounds.

Tough, self-adhesive and conductive hydrogels have recently attracted considerable interest due to their promising applications in electronic skins, wearable devices and flexible sensors. In this work, we designed a mussel-inspired nanocomposite hydrogel derived from water-soluble tannic acid/polyaniline coated cellulose nanocrystals (TA/PANI@CNCs) and various functional acrylic monomers . The incorporated TA/PANI@CNCs not only endowed the nanocomposite hydrogels with enhanced electrical conductive network and mechanical performance, but also played an important role in repeatable and durable adhesiveness to human skin without additional fixation. By taking the advantage of double networks based on various supramolecular interactions and dynamic borate ester bonds , the hydrogels exhibited a dramatic breaking strain of 974%, fracture stress of 759 kPa and rapid self-healing ability at room temperature without external stimuli. In addition, the as-prepared nanocomposite hydrogels had great strain sensitivity and excellent electrical conductivity , which can be employed as flexible strain sensors for tracking human body motion with a broad range of strain or directly assembled on other materials surfaces as electrical circuits. Compared with previous conductive hydrogels, this work will provide a novel pathway to fabricate nanocomposite hydrogels with self-healing, self-adhesive, strain sensitive and robust mechanical properties for potential applications in wearable strain sensors, flexible electrical interconnection and human motion monitoring.
