Molecular-Level Understanding of Water Transport Mechanisms in Functionalized Ti3C2TX MXene Membrane-Combined Experimental Approaches

Yang He,Guowei Chen,Yiping Zhao,Li Chen

The hydrophilicity of two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal carbides, carbonitrides, and nitrides (MXene) nanochannels plays a critical role in water transport during filtration, yet its specific effects on MXene membranes remain inadequately understood. Herein, we systematically investigated water transport through Ti3C2TX MXene nanochannels using molecular dynamics simulations coupled with experimental validation, addressing a significant knowledge gap in MXene-based separation membranes. Our simulations demonstrated that strong interactions between water molecules and hydrophilic nanochannel MXene surfaces (Ti3C2(OH)2 MXene or Ti3C2(NH)2 MXene) facilitated the formation of ordered molecular arrangements, substantially improving water permeability. Conversely, hydrophobic nanochannels (Ti3C2O2 MXene or Ti3C2F2 MXene) exhibited disordered water molecule distributions, leading to reduced permeability. Experimental validation corroborated these simulation results, demonstrating a direct correlation between the hydrophilicity of the Ti3C2TX surface and the water flux. The highly hydrophilic Ti3C2(OH)2 MXenes exhibited water flux maximum, whereas the more hydrophobic Ti3C2F2 MXenes had the lowest water flux. By integrating molecular dynamics simulations with experimental analyses, we gained comprehensive insights into the influence of nanochannel hydrophilicity on water transport mechanisms in MXene membranes. These findings provide critical guidelines for designing high-performance MXene-based membranes for advanced water treatment and separation applications.

Multicomponent NiFe@C nanoparticles modified accordion-like Ti3C2TX MXene for efficient and tunable microwave absorption

Xinghao Qu,Boyu Li,Yilong Wang,Xiyang Li,Yuping Duan,Xuefeng Zhang,Guimei Shi,Yuanliang Zhou,Xinglong Dong

Electromagnetic pollution is escalating in the advent of the 5 G and forthcoming 6 G era. Ti 3 C 2 T X MXene, an emergent two-dimensional material, has been extensively applied in the field of electromagnetic absorption and shielding owing to its high electrical conductivity, adjustable interlayer spacing, and substantial surface area. However, its practical application as an absorber is severely limited by challenges including face-to-face restacking, surface modification difficulties, and poor impedance matching. Here, carbon-coated NiFe alloy nanoparticles (NiFe@C NPs), fabricated using the DC arc-discharge technique, are electrostatically self-assembled with MXene. This process effectively reduces self-stacking and enhances impedance matching properties. The robust magnetic coupling within NiFe alloy compensates for the deficiency in the magnetic loss capacity of carbon and MXene, while defects in the carbon layer and terminal groups on MXene's surface facilitate dipolar polarization. Furthermore, the heterogeneous interfaces between NiFe@C NPs and MXene produce localized dielectric polarization fields that are conducive to enhancing interfacial polarization. Additionally, the multilayered structure of MXene promotes multiple reflections and scattering of incident electromagnetic waves. When the NiFe@C/MXene composite has a thickness of 2.3 mm, it reaches a minimum reflection loss of −38.40 dB. Computer Simulation Technology (CST) results confirm the high radar cross section reduction value (17.21 dB·m 2 ), indicating the potential of multi-component NiFe/carbon/MXene composite for microwave absorption.

Ti3C2TX MXene/loofah-derived carbon aerogel for high-efficiency adsorption of organic pollutants in wastewater

Tiantian Lv,Jiarong Zhang,Long Yu,Ya’nan Zhao,Tianran Zhao,Yi’na Yang,Chunna Yu,Chang Zhao,Guangjian Xing

The contamination of wastewater by organic pollutants significantly impacts human health and the environment due to their carcinogenic nature and various adverse effects. To address this issue, this study offers a high-efficiency and low-cost biomass-based carbon aerogel adsorbent, which was prepared through the hydrothermal carbonization of loofah, followed by Ti 3 C 2 T X MXene impregnation. The aerogel features a porous three-dimensional network structure and a substantial specific surface area, facilitating broad-spectrum adsorption capabilities for various dyes and drugs. The aerogel achieved impressive adsorption capacities of 175.29 and 75.73 mg/g for cationic methylene blue and Rhodamine B dyes, and 106.33 and 93.29 mg/g for anionic methyl orange and Congo red dyes, as well as 86.25 mg/g for tetracycline hydrochloride, surpassing other reported biomass-based aerogels. Furthermore, it demonstrated effective decolorization ability for wastewater containing mixed dyes. Notably, it exhibited excellent recycling and regeneration properties, maintaining a high removal rate after multiple cycles of adsorption–desorption. The adsorption process of dye/drug by the aerogel followed Langmuir’s monomolecular layer adsorption model, exhibiting spontaneous, endothermic, and disorder-increasing behavior in alignment with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. This study presents an efficient biomass-based aerogel for the removal of organic pollutants from wastewater.

Ultralow-content Co decoration on Ti3C2Tx MXene induced electromagnetic characteristic modulation for efficient microwave absorption

Ying Liu,Yubo Zhao,Changtu Ma,Min Zhao,Huayun Du,Yang Ge,Jianlong Ji,Kexun Li,Yanxia Wu

Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene has been regarded as a promising candidate for advanced microwave absorption materials. However, the microwave absorbing performance of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene is suppressed by the single dielectric loss mechanism and impedance mismatch because of the high conductivity. To effectuate a good absorption capability of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene, this paper constructs a heterostructured Co/Ti 3 C 2 T x hybrid by atomic layer deposition of magnetic Co nanoparticles on Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets . The microstructures, magnetism , and microwave absorption behaviors of the Co/Ti 3 C 2 T x hybrids are investigated systematically. The results show that the frequency-dependent electromagnetic parameters of the Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene become tunable by controlling the content of Co decorations, which are conducive to both magnetic loss and impedance matching . The Co/Ti 3 C 2 T x hybrid with ultralow Co decoration content (only 1.52 wt%) achieves the minimum reflect loss of −54.32 dB at a thin matched thickness of 1.29 mm, and the corresponding effective absorption bandwidth with reflection loss below −10 dB reaches 4.29 GHz. The atomic layer deposited magnetic metal nanostructures provides an effective strategy for preparing MXene-based hybrids which not only have high absorption efficiency but also significantly reduce the use of magnetic metals.

Ultralight Hierarchical Fe3O4/MoS2/rGO/Ti3C2Tx MXene Composite Aerogels for High-Efficiency Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Shiyao Yan,Shiping Shao,Yunxiang Tang,Xin Zhang,Chan Guo,Luxue Wang,Jiurong Liu,Lili Wu,Fenglong Wang

Aerogel-based composites, renowned for their three-dimensional (3D) network architecture, are gaining increasing attention as lightweight electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbers. However, attaining high reflection loss, broad effective absorption bandwidth (EAB), and ultrathin thickness concurrently presents a formidable challenge, owing to the stringent demands for precise structural regulation and incorporation of magnetic/dielectric multicomponents with synergistic loss mechanisms within the 3D networks. In this study, we successfully synthesized a 3D hierarchical porous Fe3O4/MoS2/rGO/Ti3C2Tx MXene (FMGM) composite aerogel via directional freezing and subsequent heat treatment processes. Owing to their ingenious structure and multicomponent design, the FMGM aerogels, featured with abundant heterogeneous interface structure and magnetic/dielectric synergism, show exceptional impedance matching characteristics and diverse EM wave absorption mechanisms. After optimization, the prepared ultralight (6.4 mg cm–3) FMGM-2 aerogel exhibits outstanding EM wave absorption performance, achieving a minimal reflection loss of −66.92 dB at a thickness of 3.61 mm and an EAB of 6.08 GHz corresponding to the thickness of 2.3 mm, outperforming most of the previously reported aerogel-based absorbing materials. This research presents an effective strategy for fabricating lightweight, ultrathin, highly efficient, and broad band EM wave absorption materials.

An intercalated structure MXene@CCNS: cuttlefish ink-derived carbon nanospheres composite Ti3C2Tx MXene for supercapacitors

Dawei Wang,Yue Lian,Qiuping Zhou,Hongliang Fu,Yongfeng Hu,Jing Zhao,Huaihao Zhang

The Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene with unique two-dimensional layered structure is a promising material for energy storage. However, the self-stacking behavior of MXene nanosheets limits its electrochemical performance. In this study, a heterostructured composite has been developed by intercalating cuttlefish ink-derived carbon nanospheres into layers of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheet through an electrostatic self-assembly method. This design effectively increases the interlayer spacing of MXene, and prevents it from tightly stacking. The heterostructure enlarges the specific surface area and exposes more active sites, thus improving the charge storage capacity and ion/electron transport. In Addition, the heterostructure buffers the volume changes of electrode material during charge-discharge processes, resulting in enhanced cycling stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that the heterostructure effectively modulates the electronic structure of MXene. Compared to pure MXene, the composite exhibits significantly improved specific capacitance (264 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 ), better rate capability (76.9 % capacitance retention from 0.5 A g −1 to 10 A g −1 ) and greater cycling stability (93.4 % capacitance retention after 5000 cycles). Based on this electrode material, the assembled symmetric supercapacitor achieves 12.8 Wh kg −1 of energy density at 0.2 kW kg −1 of power density and a capacitance retention of 91.7 % after 5000 cycles.

Constructing heterogeneous interfaces of Ti3C2Tx MXene magnetic nanocomposites for efficient low-frequency microwave absorption performance

Jing Li,Lingling He,Weimin Xia,Chao Du,Li He,Xiao Li,Caiyin You,Di Zhou

Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets have introduced significant potential for enhancing impedance matching, fine-tuning electromagnetic parameters, and improving microwave absorption performance. However, substantial challenges remain regarding the performance in low-frequency (2–8 GHz) microwave absorption. Herein, a facile electrostatic self-assembly approach and modified etching method is employed to construct the heterogeneous interfaces by integrating LiFe 5 O 8 nanoparticles with MXene nanosheets. The results indicate that the epitaxial growth of LiFe 5 O 8 nanoparticles on the MXene surface could enhance interfacial polarization. Furthermore, the heterogeneous structure improves the magnetic coupling and the electromagnetic waves (EMW) reflection. Notably, the minimum reflection loss (RL) value is −60.58 dB at 5.52 GHz in C band when the MXene to LiFe 5 O 8 ratio is 1:4. Moreover, the minimum RL is −61.75 dB at a thickness of 2.46 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) reaches 6 GHz at 1.63 mm when the MXene to LiFe 5 O 8 ratio is 1:2. Additionally, the MXene/LiFe 5 O 8 nanocomposites exhibit varying degrees of absorption across C, X, and Ku bands, signifying the enhancement of microwave absorption performance across frequency bands. This design strategy offers a novel approach for developing microwave absorption materials characterized by high absorption efficiency and wide bandwidth in low-frequency.

Fabrication, microstructure, and properties of Cu nanoparticles-loaded Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets-reinforced Cu matrix composites

Xinru Gong,Haohao Zou,Huadong Ye,Weiwei Zhu,Ying Han,Zhenxin Duan,Suqiu Jia,Xu Ran

In this study, copper (Cu) nanoparticles (NPs)-modified Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets (Ti 3 C 2 T x @Cu) were synthesized via chemical reduction. Subsequently, Ti 3 C 2 T x @Cu/Cu composite powder was synthesized via low-energy ball milling, followed by rapid hot pressing to fabricate Ti 3 C 2 T x @Cu/Cu composites. The influence of Ti 3 C 2 T x @Cu content on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and tribological performance of Ti 3 C 2 T x @Cu/Cu composites was systematically investigated. With increasing Ti 3 C 2 T x @Cu content (0–10 vol%), the Brinell hardness of the composites gradually increased, while the tensile strength showed an initial increase to a maximum of 311.59 MPa at 3 vol%, and then gradually decreased. The main reason for this improvement was the enhancement effect of Ti 3 C 2 T x @Cu. Moreover, Ti 3 C 2 T x @Cu effectively enhanced the tribological performance of the Cu matrix, attributed to the synergistic effect of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets and Cu NPs. These components could get adsorbed onto the surface of the friction pairs and induce tribochemical reactions, resulting in the formation of Fe 2 O 3 and CuO. Consequently, a stable protective film composed of Fe 2 O 3 /CuO/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene was formed on the worn surface, thereby reducing friction.

Langjin Zhang,Yingwen Wang,Yubing Jiao,Min Mao,Weiliang Xiong,Yingjie Zhang,Youning Wang,Songbai Zhang,Wei Zhang,Jinguang Yang

Pathogenic bacteria represent a considerable threat to public health and food safety, necessitating the development of advanced detection methodologies. In this study, a novel fluorescence sensing platform based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) was established to detect Pathogenic bacteria with rapid response, exceptional sensitivity, and stable selectivity. Using carboxyl-modified Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x -COOH) as nanocarriers, double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) were assembled to functionalize the MXene for rapidly efficient quenching of fluorescence dye-labeled aptamers and specific recognition of target bacteria. Upon the incorporation of target bacteria, the aptamer preferentially bound to bacteria, dissociating from the MXene and resulting in a significant and rapid increase in fluorescence intensity. Using E. coli O157:H7 and S. aureus as exemplar biotargets, the sensor demonstrated ultra-sensitive detection of E. coli O157:H7 and S. aureus with limits of detection (LOD, S/N = 3) as low as 0.61 CFU/mL and 1.62 CFU/mL, respectively, within a rapid response time of 15 min, thereby demonstrating superior performance in comparison to the majority of existing FRET-based biosensors. Moreover, this method demonstrates excellent reproducibility and stability, having been successfully applied to spiked milk samples. The recovery rates for S. aureus ranged from 90.2 % to 114.3 %, with acceptable RSDs of 1.4 % to 7.4 %, while those for E. coli O157:H7 ranged from 91.7 % to 93.6 %, with acceptable RSDs of 5.2 % to 8.7 %, confirming its strong potential for practical sample analysis. The present study establishes a foundational framework for subsequent research into biosensors for detecting targets and provides a new pathway for the analysis of other biological factors.

Lu Luo,Qiuyan Kong,Qianqian Zhang,Jing Zhang,Mizi Fan,Weigang Zhao

Layered double hydroxides (LDH) and two-dimensional metal carbides (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) garner significant attention in recent years. LDH/Ti 3 C 2 T x nanohybrids combine the unique characteristics of individual component, making them a promising option for high-power energy storage applications. Here, we present a composite electrode constructed by synergistic coupling of Ti 3 C 2 T x and ternary hydrotalcite (NiCoMn-LDH). Strong interfacial interactions between the NiCoMn-LDH array and Ti 3 C 2 T x nanoflakes, along with effective electron coupling, contribute to enhanced structural stability, conductivity, and electrolyte accessibility, thereby significantly promoting the kinetics of redox reactions . The intriguing “lace-like” structure fully utilizes the high activity of NiCoMn-LDH and the excellent conductivity of Ti 3 C 2 T x , allowing LDH/Ti 3 C 2 T x to exhibit an impressive output capacitance of 1102.9 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , coupled with notable rate capability (66.87 % at 20 A g −1 ). The constructed LDH/Ti 3 C 2 T x //AC hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) achieves a remarkable energy density of 47.3 Wh kg −1 at 800 W kg −1 . Following 5000 cycles, the specific capacity of HSC decreases by merely 8.3 %, while achieving a Coulombic efficiency of 99 %, showcasing remarkable durability and reversible reaction characteristics. This study provides a streamlined and effective methodology for crafting LDH/Ti 3 C 2 T x nanohybrids, showcasing robust coupled interfaces and exceptional electrochemical energy storage application.

Tailoring Tribological Characteristics in Titanium Alloys by Laser Surface Texturing and 2D Ti3C2Tx MXene Nanocoating

Qicheng Zhang,Yong Li,Fei Liang,Haoran Zhang,Bin Wang,Xiaopeng Li,Zifeng Lin,Yan Lin,Xiang Chen

The inferior tribological properties of titanium (Ti) and its alloys, due to their limited work hardening capability and the mechanical instability of their oxide scale, pose substantive challenges in practical applications. Surface texturing and the application of 2D material coatings are acknowledged as efficacious strategies for enhancing these properties. Nevertheless, the rapid loss of effectiveness when employing these methods in isolation highlights a significant limitation. Herein, a 50-nm-thick MXene nanocoating is deposited onto groove-textured pure Ti surface, effectuating a reduction in the coefficient of friction (COF) from ≈0.57 to 0.17, thereby substantially mitigating wear on the Ti substrate. The grooved surface architecture plays a vital role in storing MXenes and facilitating lubricant replenishment through the stirring effect of frictional stress during subsequent friction process. Further, the continuous decomposition and reorganization of MXene coating results in the formation of a robust tribofilm that resists oxidation and plastic deformation in the subsurface layer, markedly enhancing the friction and wear resistance. These findings are crucial for improving tribological performance in Ti and its alloys and provide a straightforward yet effective strategy for tailoring their tribological properties by integrating LST with 2D material nanocoating.

Self-Supporting, Binder-Free, and Flexible Ti3C2Tx MXene-Based Supercapacitor Electrode with Improved Electrochemical Performance

Rui Ma,Xujing Zhang,Jingting Zhuo,Lingyun Cao,Yutong Song,Yajiang Yin,Xiaofeng Wang,Guowei Yang,Fang Yi

MXenes have shown great potential for supercapacitor electrodes due to their unique characteristics, but simultaneously achieving high capacitance, rate capability, and cyclic stability along with good mechanical flexibility is exceptionally challenging. Here, highly enhanced capacitance, rate capability, and cyclic stability, as well as good mechanical flexibility for T3C2Tx MXene-based supercapacitor electrodes are simultaneously obtained by engineering the electrode structure, modifying the surface chemistry, and optimizing the fabrication process via an optimized integration approach. This approach combines and more importantly optimizes three methods that all require a calcination process: carbonizing in situ grown polymer (“Cpolymer”) on the MXene, alkali treatment (“A”), and template sacrificing (“P”); and the optimized processes lead to more abundant active sites, faster ion accessibility, better chemical stability, and good mechanical flexibility. The obtained P-MXene/Cpolymer-A electrodes are binder-free and self-supporting and not only have good mechanical flexibility but also demonstrate much larger capacitances and better rate performance than the pristine MXene electrode. Specifically, the P-MXene/CPAQ-A electrode (PAQ: quinone-amine polymer) achieves a high capacitance of 532.9 F g–1 at 5 mV s–1, together with superior rate performance and improved cyclic stability (97.1% capacitance retention after 40 000 cycles at 20 A g–1) compared with the pristine MXene (79.6% retention) and P-MXene-A (77.3% retention) electrodes. In addition, it is discovered that carbonizing in situ grown polymers can variously remove the −F group and the removal effect can be accumulated with that by the alkali treatment.
