Photothermal therapy (PTT) guided by bioimaging has attracted much attention. Recently, the multifunctional nanomaterials with multimodal imaging and high-performance therapy effect are extremely important. In this work, a novel nanostructure with Ag nanospheres (NSs) encapsulated Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) film which decorated by Ba 2 GdF 7 :Yb 3+ , Ho 3+ nanoparticles is synthesized by a simple method. The novel nanostructure endows the NCs remarkable originality and excellent multifunctional performance. The morphology, structure, optical properties, biocompatibility, cytotoxicity, superparamagnetic properties and photothermal therapeutic efficiency of the Ag@PVP-Ba 2 GdF 7 :Yb 3+ , Ho 3+ nanocomposites (NCs) are investigated. The results show that Ag@PVP-Ba 2 GdF 7 :Yb 3+ , Ho 3+ NCs possess good upconversion luminescence (UCL) performance and X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging ability. Furthermore, in MTT cytotoxicity measurement, the NCs exhibit low cytotoxicity and excellent biocompatibility. Moreover, the PVP film coating of the NCs can largely promote the stability. In addition, outstanding photothermal conversion ability and stability are also obtained upon NIR laser irradiation. Utilizing the prominent photothermal effect, PTT in vitro shows efficient photothermal killing effect on tumor cells. Therefore, Ag@PVP-Ba 2 GdF 7 :Yb 3+ , Ho 3+ NCs from multifaceted research provides a break to multifunctional nanomaterials for multimodal imaging detection and high-performance tumor photothermal therapy.

Ho 3+ - and Yb 3+ -codoped Sr 4 La 2 Ti 4 Nb 6 O 30 (Sr 4 La 1.94– x Ho 0.06 Yb x Ti 4 Nb 6 O 30 , abbreviated as SLTN: Ho-Yb x ) ceramics have been synthesized, and their structural, up-conversion (UC) photoluminescence, and dielectric properties have been carefully investigated. Through Rietveld structural refinement, SLTN: Ho-Yb x samples are determined as single tetragonal tungsten bronze (TTB) phase with space group P 4 /mbm in which larger Sr 2+ ions fill the A 2 -sites, relative smaller La 3+ , Ho 3+ , and Yb 3+ ions occupy the A 1 -sites, while Ti 4+ and Nb 4+ ions fill the B-sites. Under 980 nm near infrared (NIR) excitation, bright UC green emission, relatively weak red and near-infrared (NIR) emissions, originating from 5 F 4 / 5 S 2 → 5 I 8 , 5 F 5 → 5 I 8 , and 5 F 4 / 5 S 2 → 5 I 7 transitions of Ho 3+ ions, are confirmed for SLTN: Ho-Yb x . Two-photon energy transfer process is proved through pumping laser power dependence of emission intensity measurement. Furthermore, the influence of Ho 3+ - and Yb 3+ - ions on the dielectric properties of SLTN: Ho-Yb x is also investigated and the temperature stability of dielectric permittivity is improved.

Taking advantage of the unique optical properties of upconversion nanoparticles (NP) and the feasibly modified nature of SiO2, NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+@SiO2 core@shell (UCNP@SiO2) NPs with excellent morphology have been synthesized to investigate the surface charge effect on the interactions of NPs with cells. The cellular uptake behaviors, cytotoxicities and intracellular metal ion release of the as-prepared NPs have been investigated in two cell lines (HeLa and HepG-2) by fluorescence microscopy, MTT assay and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), respectively. It is found that the UCNP@SiO2 NPs with positive surface charge have much higher cell internalization ability and cytotoxicity than those with negative surface charge. The experimental results also demonstrate that the cytotoxicity of UCNP@SiO2 NP is closely related to the increase of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and metal ion release of internalized NPs.

Oleic acid together with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) was widely used to control the size, phase and morphology of NaYF4 UCNCs. However, reports are scarce about the modulation of the luminescence intensity and color output of NaYF4 UCNCs by using different amounts of NaOH. Here, we synthesized NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+ nanocrystals by a hydro/solvent thermal method using oleic acid as ligand with different amounts of NaOH and systematically investigated their upconverted fluorescence spectra. The results indicated that the emission intensity of NaYF4 : Yb3+,Er3+, especially the green emission at 540 nm was dramatically increased as NaOH decreased. The enhancement factors of 540 nm emissions were 48, 42 and 32 for samples prepared with 0 g, 0.2 g and 0.4 g NaOH (the corresponding pH of the reaction solution were 5.9, 6.9 and 7.4), respectively, compared with that of the product prepared with the usually used 0.7 g NaOH (the corresponding pH was 8.3). Importantly, the ratio of green to red (RGR) increased from 0.4 to 5.9 when the pH decreased from 8.3 to 5.9. That is to say, the color output was tuned from orange yellow to nearly pure green. This resulted from the high energy vibration of OH−, which led to nonradiative relaxation from green emission levels (2H11/2 and 4S3/2) to the red emission level (4F9/2) and nonradiative relaxation from the red emission level (4F9/2) to the no emission level (4I11/2) of Er3+.

Multifunctional nanomaterials possessing upconversion luminescence, magnetic, and photothermal properties show promising applications in biology and medicine. In this study, a new kind of luminescent-magnetic-thermal core–shell hybrid nanocomposite was fabricated combining rare earth Yb3+ and Er3+ ions doped NaGdF4 nanocrystals as shell layer materials and gold nanorods (AuNRs) as cores. The structure, morphology, composition, and properties of the multifunctional hybrid nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, upconversion photoluminescence spectra, vibrating sample magnetometer, sensitive thermometer, and cytotoxicity assessment, respectively. The multifunctional hybrid nanocomposites have rodlike morphology and core–shell structure. The uniform NaGdF4/Yb3+,Er3+ shell with a thickness of around 4.5 nm was coated on the surface of AuNRs with a length of 40 nm and a diameter of 12 nm. The AuNRs@NaGdF4/Yb3+,Er3+ multifunctional nanocomposites provide an excellent upconversion emission under excitation at 980 nm and a superparamagnetic behavior with magnetic susceptibility of 8.0 × 10–5 emu·g–1·Oe–1 at 300 K and saturation magnetization value of 102 emu·g–1 at 2 K. More significantly, when AuNRs@NaGdF4/Yb3+,Er3+ aqueous suspensions of 100 μg·mL–1 were irradiated by a 980 nm NIR laser for 10 min, the temperature was significantly elevated to 48 °C. At the same time, the temperature of photothermal transduction can be easily controlled by adjusting the concentration of nanocomposites. Preliminary investigation of incubating with HeLa cells displays that the multifunctional nanocomposites exhibit a good biocompatibility. Moreover, the nanocomposites may be effectively utilized for bioimaging and photothermal therapy in living cells.

Single-band red upconversion (UC) emission of Er3+ has been successfully achieved in Yb3+/Er3+ codoped KMgF3 nanocrystals via a nonequivalent substitution strategy, in which lanthanide ions probably aggregate, as evidenced by density functional theory calculations and upconversion dynamic processes. The aggregation of Yb3+/Er3+ would cause large cross-relaxation probabilities among the lanthanide ions when photo-excited, resulting in the disappearance of the green emission and the population of the red emitting level of Er3+. Interestingly, the single-band feature is independent of the dopant concentration and pump power. The possible UC mechanism is discussed in detail according to nanocrystal morphology, ion radii, lattice parameters and decay lifetime studies of the Yb3+–Er3+ doped analogous compounds (KMgF3, KZnF3 and KCdF3). It could be concluded that Yb3+/Er3+ ions tend to aggregate in KMgF3, resulting in the largest ratio of red to green UC emission. This research may give a perspective toward tuning the UC emission of lanthanide ions.

UCNP-based drug delivery systems commonly rely on stimuli-sensitive auxiliaries, lacking a straightforward manipulation strategy. Here we designed Yb3+-enhanced upconversion/mesoporous silica nanocomposites (UCNP@SiO2) for consecutive cell imaging, photothermal drug delivery and cancer therapy. Core UCNPs (NaYbF4: 2% Er3+) were synthesized and coated with mesoporous silica, whose high-efficiency photothermal properties were verified in vitro. Then doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) was loaded on the UCNP@SiO2 and successfully triggered to release by a 975 nm laser of 150 mW or 300 mW. Before the therapy, we used a much lower laser power of 15 mW (which would cause little DOX release) for UCNP-probed fluorescence imaging of Hela cells and affirmed a favorable cell uptake of nanocomposites. Subsequently, cell viability assay and PI stain have demonstrated that the 300 mW laser could manipulate drug delivery of UCNP@SiO2-DOX and cause a severe loss of cell viability. The Yb3+-enhanced UCNP@SiO2 shows a great potential in simultaneous biomedical imaging and photothermal-triggered on-site drug delivery for chemotherapy of cancer.

In this paper, an electrospinning technique was developed to prepare CaSc2O4:Yb3+/Er3+ one dimensional (1D) nanofibers for the first time. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption/desorption were utilized to characterize the structure and morphology of the as-prepared nanofibers, indicating that single phase mesoporous CaSc2O4:Yb3+/Er3+ 1D nanofibers with a uniform size and morphology can be prepared via the electrospinning technique. The as-prepared CaSc2O4:Yb3+/Er3+ 1D nanofibers exhibit strong UCL under the excitation of 980 nm. The cross-relaxation (4S3/2 + 4I15/2 → 4I9/2 + 4I13/2) and energy back transfer (4S3/2 + 4F7/2 → 4I13/2 + 4F5/2) processes are found to be responsible for the concentration-dependent UCL properties, confirmed by rate equation modeling. Optical thermometry in the temperature range of 298–623 K was recorded using the FIR technique with two green UC emissions in the as-prepared CaSc2O4:Yb3+/Er3+ 1D nanofibers. The dependence of the sensitivity on the doping concentration of the Yb3+ and Er3+ ions is found. The above results suggest that the as-prepared CaSc2O4:Yb3+/Er3+ 1D nanofibers have great potential for the applications of drug delivery and optical thermometers.

The rare earth hollow spheres with up-conversion luminescence properties have shown potential applications in drug delivery and bioimaging fields. However, there have been few reports for the degradation properties of rare earth oxide drug carriers. Herein, uniform and well-dispersed Y2O3:Yb3+,Er3+ hollow spheres (YOHSs) have been fabricated by a general Pechini sol–gel process with melamine formaldehyde colloidal spheres as template. The novel YOHSs with up-conversion luminescence has good drug loading amount and drug-release efficiency; moreover, it exhibits pH-responsive release patterns. In particular, the YOHSs sample exhibits low cytotoxicity and excellent degradable properties in acid buffer. After the sample was loaded with anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX), the antitumor result in vitro indicates that YOHS-DOX might be effective in cancer treatment. The animal imaging test also reveals that the YOHSs drug carrier can be used as an outstanding luminescent probe for bioimaging in vivo application prospects. The results suggest that the degradable drug carrier with up-conversion luminescence may enhance the delivery efficiency of drugs and improve the cancer therapy in clinical applications.

Room-temperature green to orange color-tunable upconversion (UC) luminescence has been achieved from Yb3+/Mn2+ co-doped CaO by adjusting the doping concentration of Mn2+ ions and the temperature of the samples upon 980 nm laser diode excitation. In this material system, the green UC emission band centered at 508 nm and the wavelength-tunable orange UC emission band from 560 to 725 nm are realized at 980 nm excitation, which originate from the cooperative luminescence of Yb3+ pairs and the |2F7/2, 4T1(4G)〉 → |2F7/2, 6A1(S)〉 transition of exchange-coupled Yb3+–Mn2+ dimers, respectively. The characteristic Stokes and UC emission properties, UC luminescence decay behaviors, temperature-dependent UC emission properties, as well as the involved UC mechanism of CaO:Yb3+,Mn2+ are investigated and discussed in detail. This study offers a new method to design novel UC materials for lighting and display applications instead of using conventionally investigated lanthanide (Ln3+) ions, such as Er3+, Tm3+ and Ho3+.

NaLuF 4 :Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ micrometer prismatic crystals are potential materials for the preparation of optical waveguide devices. However, structural defects and OH – groups are generated inside and on their surfaces during growth processes. The structural defects and OH – groups lead to a large depletion of excitation energy and severely quench the downconversion luminescence of Er 3+ . In addition, the Yb 3+ /Er 3+ co-doping ratio significantly affects the downconversion luminescence of the microcrystals, which in turn affects the performance of the optical waveguide amplifiers based on the microcrystals. By adjusting the co-doping ratio of Yb 3+ and Er 3+ in the microcrystals and removing the defects in the crystals, their downconversion luminescence performance was significantly improved. The results showed that the downconversion luminescence under the excitation from a 980 nm laser reached the maximum value when the doping ratio of Yb 3+ and Er 3+ was 20:1.5. In addition, the OH – groups and structural defects in the micrometer crystals were significantly eliminated by ion-exchange and high-temperature annealing treatments, and the crystalline quality was significantly improved. After ion-exchange and high-temperature annealing treatments, the downconversion luminescence enhancement of NaLuF 4 :Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ microcrystals was 2.5 times that of the untreated samples.

Inorganic chiral materials have attracted increasing attention due to their application prospects. In this work, we synthesized the chiral nanostructured bismuth oxychloride co-doped with Er 3+ /Yb 3+ phosphor (D-BYEP) by hydrothermal growth with a subsequent air-annealing strategy using chiral sugar alcohols as the chiral inducer. The D-BYEP emitted bright red light under the excitation of 980 nm near-infrared laser. The temperature sensing behavior was evaluated by employing the thermally coupled (TCLs) or non-thermally coupled (NTCLs) levels of Er 3+ . The maximum relative sensitivities ( S R ) obtained are 0.84% K −1 and 1.30% K −1 (298 K), respectively. The results show that the D-BYEP may be ideal candidates for optical temperature sensors. We anticipate that this new type of inorganic chiral phosphor may have a range of applications in temperature measurement of light sources.
