Photocatalytic hydrogen production from water splitting is a technology that takes advantage of solar energy to produce clean and green hydrogen energy with wide application prospects. Herein, an S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst with a nanosheets-on-nanosheets structure was successfully prepared by using a simple low-temperature water bath method and ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets are generated in situ on Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 nanosheets, realizing efficient photocatalytic produce hydrogen under visible light irradiation. The optimal proportion of Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 /ZnIn 2 S 4 (BTO/ZIS) has extraordinary hydrogen production efficiency of 19.8 mmol h −1 g −1 , 2.1 times that of pristine ZIS (9.2 mmol h −1 g −1 ). The main reasons for the improved activity of BTO/ZIS heterojunction photocatalysts are investigated by a series of photochemical characterization data analyses. Finally, its high photocatalytic performance can be attributed to more reactive active sites provided by the sheet-sheet heterostructure and the formation of S-scheme heterojunction between BTO and ZIS, which promotes the transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs.

Pd modified ZnIn 2 S 4 /P25 (Pd@ZnIn 2 S 4 /P25) heterostructures have been synthesized by hydrothermal and photo-reduction method. The H 2 evolution rate of optimal photocatalyst 0.5 %Pd modified 5ZnIn 2 S 4 /2P25 (0.5 %Pd@5ZnIn 2 S 4 /2P25) are approximately 9100 and 3693 μmol · g −1 h −1 under simulated sunlight and visible light irradiation with ethanol as the sacrificial agent, which are nearly 9 and 460 times higher than pure ZnIn 2 S 4 and P25, respectively. The promoted photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the physicochemical properties of the catalysts and the strong electronic interaction between Pd modified ZnIn 2 S 4 (Pd@ZnIn 2 S 4 ) and P25, the improved transfer rate of photo-generated electrons and holes, the inhibited recombination of charge carriers, and the enhanced light harvesting. The results of photo-electrochemistry and EPR indicate that it is a Z-scheme photocatalytic system, in which the electrons accumulate on the conduct band of ZnIn 2 S 4 and the holes assemble on the valence band of P25. This work provides an effective method to construct highly efficient photocatalytic systems for solar H 2 generation.

Graphical Sulfur vacancies and nickel dopants were simultaneously introduced into ultrathin ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets (ZIS NSs) to boost photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Ni 0.05 −V S −ZIS reaches the highest photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 8.91 mmol g −1 h −1 under visible light irradiation. The synergistic role of S vacancies and Ni dopants allows the photoexcited electrons in the CB to transfer to the trap state, thus delaying the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. Introducing vacancies and element doping are effective approaches to boost photocatalytic activities of metal sulfides. In this work, sulfur vacancies and nickel dopants were simultaneously introduced into ultrathin ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets (ZIS NSs) to explore their synergistic role in promoting photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The S vacancies can trap the photo-generated electrons, lower the conduction band minimum (CBM), improve the photo-generated charge reduction capacity and prolong the carrier lifetime. Meanwhile, Ni dopants cause an increase in the Fermi level (E F ), which ensures a higher charge density and an effective carrier separation efficiency. The optimum hydrogen evolution rate of sample Ni 0.05 −V S −ZIS reaches 8.91 mmol g −1 h −1 under visible light due to the synergistic effect of the S vacancies and Ni dopants.

The photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into valuable fuels and sustainable energy has a promising future, yet remains a challenge due to low charge separation efficiency and inadequate active sites. We find that ZnIn2S4-loaded secondary amine-functionalized organic silica (ZnIn2S4/NH–SiO2) was effective for visible-light driven CO2 photocatalytic reduction. The ZnIn2S4/NH–SiO2 with 40% ZnIn2S4 content achieves a CO production rate of 1304.8 μmol g−1 h−1 at room temperature, which is about 3 times higher than that of pristine ZnIn2S4. The thin ZnIn2S4 nanosheet accelerates the separation of photogenerated electron pairs, and the amine groups on ZnIn2S4/NH–SiO2 act as active sites for adsorption and activation of CO2, hence facilitating the photoreduction of CO2.

Defect engineering, inducing photo-excited electrons and holes to different surfaces of semiconductor photocatalyst, is an efficient strategy to improve the photocatalytic activity. A rapid heating-up hydrothermal technique is developed to regulate ZnIn 2 S 4 crystal growth, then, ultrathin ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets with In defect-rich [InS] 6 interlayer but perfect [InS] 4 and [ZnS] 4 surface layers are successfully prepared (ultra-ZIS-V In ). Interestingly, the In defect, inducing the redistribution of the orbitals near the valence band maximum, separates the oxidation and reduction sites on the opposite sides of the ultra-ZIS-V In nanosheets. Simultaneously, In defects increase the density of states (near the valence band maximum and conduction band minimum) and delocalize the electron around In defects. Accordingly, the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate is optimized to 13.4 mmol h −1 g −1 , which is 8.9 times higher than that of defect-free ZnIn 2 S 4 (pristine-ZIS).

Hierarchical structure design and use of cocatalyst are effective strategies to improve the photocatalytic performance of semiconductor catalysts. Herein, 0D NiSe 2 nanoparticles decorated 2D ZnIn 2 S 4 ultrathin nanosheet-assembled microflowers using a facile solvothermal approach are synthesized. The as-obtained NiSe 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 nanocomposites exhibit enhanced visible-light photocatalytic H 2 -evolution activity of 1487 µ mol (g h) –1 , three times higher than that of pure ZnIn 2 S 4 . The hierarchical structure of ZnIn 2 S 4 microflowers exposes more surface-active sites and enhances light harvesting. Meanwhile, the formation of heterojunctions between ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets and NiSe 2 nanoparticles creates a space-charge separation region that facilitates the transfer and separation of photoinduced electrons and holes, resulting in improved photocatalytic H 2 production. This work provides a promising strategy for designing and constructing 0D/2D heterojunctions for efficient solar-driven energy conversion.

Two-dimensional (2D) layered metal sulfides with abundant edge sites and weak van der Waals bonds are promising materials that absorb sensing molecules at low temperatures. The introduction of defects is an effective strategy to improve the sensing performance of two-dimensional sulfide semiconductors. In this experiment, we used a facile hydrothermal method to adjust the S content of the lattice in ZnIn2S4 microflowers(MFs). And the ZnIn 2 S 4 MFs with suitable S-vacancy content were derived from the precursor with a stoichiometric ratio (Zn/In/S) of 1:2:6. These S-defect-engineered controlled growth of ZnIn 2 S 4 MFs is composed of many nanosheets(NSs) with exposed {0001} facets grown along the c-axis direction, which has a large number of S-vacancies that can serve as active sites for sensing reactions. Thus, S-vacancy-rich ZnIn 2 S 4 MFs exhibited better sensing performance for triethylamine even at the optimum operating temperature(90 ℃), including high response(1013–100 ppm), low limit of detection(1 ppm), excellent gas selectivity, and fast response(4 s). It also shows good sensitivity to lower concentrations of triethylamine at room temperature . This work demonstrates the good effect and potential of vacancy modulation in improving the performance of two-dimensional sulfide nanomaterials for low-power sensing.

The dynamic photocatalytic membrane coated with ZnIn 2 S 4 was fabricated to solve the problems of suspended photocatalyst separation and membrane fouling that occur in applying photocatalytic technology and membrane separation technology, respectively. The structural characteristics, photocatalytic performance, and antifouling property of dynamic photocatalytic membranes with different loadings of ZnIn 2 S 4 were systematically investigated. As the loading of photocatalysts increases, a uniform and dense photocatalytic layer formed on the membrane surface, and the surface morphology changed from a protruding structure to an undulating mountain-like structure. The roughness and absorption performance for UV–Vis of dynamic photocatalytic membranes increased because of the formation of a photocatalytic layer while the chemical property and water flux did not change. The removal efficiencies of fluvastatin and total organic carbon by dynamic photocatalytic membranes were significantly increased compared with that of the pristine polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane, indicating that the dynamic photocatalytic membranes possessed excellent photocatalytic performance and high stability. Meanwhile, the dynamic photocatalytic membranes exhibited a greater antifouling property than the pristine PVDF membrane because of the formation of the photocatalytic layer on the membrane surface. Therefore, the fabrication of dynamic photocatalytic membrane is an effective method to promote the advantageous combination of photocatalytic technology and membrane separation technology.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), as a class of semiconductor-like materials, are widely used in photocatalysis. However, the limited visible light absorption and poor charge separation efficiency are the main challenges restricting their photocatalytic performance. Herein, the type II heterojunction MIL-68(In)@ZIS was successfully fabricated by in situ growth of ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) on the surface of a representative MOF, i.e. MIL-68(In). After composition optimization, MIL-68(In)-20@ZIS shows an extraordinary photocatalytic hydrogen production efficiency of 9.09 mmol g−1 h−1 and good photochemical stability, which far exceeds those of most photocatalysts. The hierarchical loose structure of MIL-68(In)-20@ZIS is conducive to the adsorption of reactants and mass transfer. Meanwhile, a large number of tight 2D contact interfaces significantly reduce the obstruction of charge transfer, paving the way for high-perform photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The experimental results demonstrate that the MIL-68(In)@ZIS heterojunction achieves intensive photoresponse and effective charge separation and transfer benefiting from unique charge transport paths of a type II heterojunction. This study opens an avenue toward MOF-based heterojunctions for solar energy conversion.

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction into value-added chemicals such as CO is of great importance for carbon-neutral in the future. However, both high CO 2 activation barriers and sluggish charge kinetics make it still a challenge for CO 2 photoreduction with high reactivity. Herein, a type-II heterojunction (CZ/C), which consists of CdS (C) nanospheres anchored on the defective Ce-doped ZnIn 2 S 4 (CZ) microflowers, was synthesized by an in-situ solvothermal route, realizing exceptional CO 2 catalytic performance under simulated sunlight irradiation. According to the detailed characterizations and density functional theory calculations, the energy barrier of the rate determining step is significantly reduced due to the outstanding CO 2 adsorption and activation on rare earth Ce atoms. Simultaneously, the separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated carriers are greatly facilitated by type-II heterojunction constructed by anchoring CdS on CZ and S vacancies resulting from a heteroatom doping strategy. Thus, the optimum photocatalyst of CZ2/C2 composite provides an advantageous platform for CO 2 photoreduction to CO, which is roughly 7.5- and 3.0-fold higher than those of the pristine ZIS and CZ2, respectively. This work offers a promising avenue for designing effective catalysts with a dual-strategy method for photocatalysis.

Chlorogenic acid (CA) is a phenolic acid compound with broad biological activity. In this study, a high-performance photoelectrochemical sensor based on in situ grown ZnIn2S4@ZnWO4 heterojunctions was developed for the sensitive detection of CA. ZnWO4 nanocrystals were successfully grown on the surface of flower-like ZnIn2S4 through a one-step hydrothermal method, resulting in a tightly coupled heterojunction structure that effectively promoted photo-induced charge separation and enhanced photocurrent response. Experimental results demonstrated that the sensor exhibited excellent analytical performance for CA, with a good linear relationship within a concentration range of 20–800 nM, a detection limit as low as 5 nM (S/N = 3), and high selectivity, stability, and reproducibility. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed the charge transfer mechanism at the heterojunction interface and the interaction between CA and the material surface. Practical sample analysis showed that the sensor was successfully applied to accurately determine CA content in coffee, eucommia ulmoides oliver and lonicera japonica thunb, with recovery rates ranging from 97.08 to 103.56%. This study provides a new method for CA detection and offers fresh insights into the design of efficient photoelectrochemical sensors.

A bactericidal membrane (CNTs-PEI/CZIS) was designed by anchoring Cu-ZnIn 2 S 4 on CNTs-PEI. • In N coordination contributes to the structural stabilization between the CZIS and CNTs-PEI. • CNTs-PEI/CZIS has ultra hydrophilicity/oleophobicity with O/W separation efficiency of ~100%. • CNTs-PEI/CZIS has bactericidal rate of ~100% both at 10 6 CFU mL −1 (artificial) and actual water. • CNTs-PEI/CZIS has excellent self-cleaning and stable long-term antibacterial activity. Membrane technology for water disinfection (MTWD) offers high effluent quality with a small footprint, but its practical application is still limited by bacterial fouling-induced flux decline and insufficient long-term disinfection capability. Herein, we designed a self-cleaning CNTs-PEI/Cu-ZnIn 2 S 4 composite membrane by depositing an ultralow amount of copper-supported ZnIn 2 S 4 (CZIS) nanoflowers (only 2.5 mg per 50 mm-diameter membrane) onto polyethyleneimine-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs-PEI). This membrane preserves the high permeability and hydrophilic-oleophobic characteristics (oil-water separation efficiency of 99.3 ± 0.6%, with a max flux of 6470 ± 500 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ) is mainly ascribed to the CNTs-PEI construction, as well as the efficient photocatalytic sterilization activity (with an efficiency ~100% under bacterial concentration of 10 6 CFU mL −1 ) and its self-cleaning capability (overall, >6000 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ) is demonstrated to CZIS nanomaterial. In practical test, the antibacterial efficiency in natural water reaches ~100% even over 20 cycles. The integrated properties of CNTs-PEI/Cu-ZnIn 2 S 4 composite membrane are related to the design of interfacial coupling between CZIS and CNTs-PEI through In N coordination and the combination of visible-light photocatalytic activity. This work provides a promising strategy on constructing a novel composite membrane for overcoming biofouling by bacterial disinfection. A visible-light-driven carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-based composite membrane enables efficient water disinfection and purification. By anchoring Cu-ZnIn 2 S 4 nanoflowers onto hydrophilic-oleophobic PEI-functionalized CNTs, the membrane achieves ~100% bactericidal efficiency and excellent antifouling/self-cleaning performance. Its functionality in bacterial inactivation highlights its potential in sustainable and advanced water treatment technologies.
