Solar-blind deep ultraviolet (DUV) photodetectors (PDs) have promising applications in a variety of fields due to the zero background under sun or room illumination. As almost all solar-blind DUV PDs are fabricated based on materials prepared by expensive high temperature and vacuum methods, therefore, solution processed devices are highly desirable for large area, flexible and arrayed applications. Here, we demonstrated that solar-blind DUV PDs can be fabricated using colloidal ZnS quantum dots (QDs). In order to synthesize ZnS QDs with a bandgap in the solar-blind region, a new synthesis was developed. The new method produced monodispersed and strongly quantum confined ZnS QDs with an exciton peak at 265 nm. Solar-blind DUV PDs were fabricated via spin coating and ligand exchange. The ZnS QD solar-blind DUV PDs showed a fast response (Tr = 0.35 s, Td = 0.07 s) and good responsivity (∼0.1 mA W−1) and the performance was comparable to other solar-blind DUV PDs based on some traditional wide bandgap semiconductor materials. The response of the ZnS QD PDs was found to be dominated by the drift of the photogenerated carriers, as the ZnS QD thin film was insensitive to their surface states.

Cadmium-free InP quantum dots (QDs) exhibit many unique optical properties , and show great promise as light emitting materials. In this work, a series of high-efficient and color-tunable transition metal ions (Cu, Mn) single- and co-doped InP/ZnS QDs with the average size of 3.2–3.7 nm, were firstly prepared via a nucleation-doping method in an organic synthetic route. These three kinds of doped InP/ZnS QDs all exhibit dual emission with one peak position around green region owing to the intrinsic state and the other peak position around orange-red region resulted from dopant emission, the relative intensity of which can be effectively tuned by varying Cu or Mn dopant concentration. The dopant emission of Cu doped InP/ZnS QDs from 572 to 696 nm can be realized via increasing Cu dopant concertration from 0.25% to 10%, while the peak position of dopant emission in Mn doped InP/ZnS QDs system remains unaltered as Mn dopant concentration increasing. Besides, the interaction mechanism of Cu and Mn dopant in co-doped InP/ZnS QDs system was investigated with steady-state and time-resolved PL spectroscopy measurements. The results reveal that the dopant emission is dominated by Cu doping rather than Mn doping. These unique results in doped InP/ZnS QDs would help to understand the fundamental aspects of doping, and the dual-emissive and color-tunable optical properties of single-phase doped InP/ZnS QDs will endow them with great promise as color-converting materials for use in solid-state lighting.

To meet the need for high-throughput immunoassays, many multiplex fluorescent immunoassays have been proposed. Most of them need different kinds of fluorescent label indicators during the test. In this work, a novel indirect ELISA-inspired dual-channel fluorescent immunoassay based on 3-mercaptopropionic acid capped CdTe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) was constructed. The ELISA wells were coated with two kinds of antigen–QD complex. When the primary antibodies were present in a sample, they mediated the binding of a secondary antibody–DNA–gold nanoparticle complex to the antigen–QD complex. Then the gold nanoparticles quenched the fluorescence of the QDs and a decrease in fluorescence intensity was observed. Thus, the amount of primary antibody could be estimated from the decrease of fluorescence intensity. Owing to the wide absorption range and the relatively narrow emission band of the QDs, the dual-channel fluorescent immunoassay system could work at the same excitation wavelength and the emission wavelengths of each channel had no interference. As a result, two different kinds of primary antibody could be detected at the same time in one ELISA well, which simplified the operation and greatly improved the efficiency. Besides, only one type of secondary antibody needs to be added to the prepared microtiter plates, which further simplified the operation during the detection procedure. This dual-channel fluorescent immunoassay system will provide new insights into high-throughput immunodetection.

Screening a novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) system is crucial to ECL evolution. Herein, an efficient ECL system with less interference and environmental concern under physiological condition is developed via a unique internal Cu(I)/Cu(II) couple cycling amplified strategy by employing the glutathione- and citrate-capped copper indium sulfide (CIS)/ZnS nanocrystals (NCs) as electrochemiluminophore and N2H4·H2O as co-reactant. CIS/ZnS NCs can be electrochemically injected with valence band (VB) hole at 0.46 and 0.87 V (vs Ag/AgCl), and then achieve the same hole-injected states by relocalizing VB holes with the Cu(I) species inside of CIS/ZnS NCs to form internal Cu(II) defects, while each N2H4·H2O molecule can be successively oxidized to two more reducing species N2H3• and N2H2 around 0.10 V, and inject conduction band (CB) electron onto CIS/ZnS NCs for triple times. The internal Cu(I)/Cu(II) couple cycling involved radiative-charge recombination between these VB hole and CB electron eventually enables two efficient near-infrared ECL processes (around 731 nm) at 0.55 and 0.87 V, in which each single nanocrystal may participate in multiple ECL reaction cycles to produce multiple photons for amplified ECL, similar to the tris(bipyridyl)ruthenium(III) based ECL system. The low-triggering-potential ECL process at 0.55 V can be utilized to selectively determine Cu(II) with a wide linear range from 10 and 1500 nM and a limit of detection of 5 nM (S/N = 3). This work presents a NCs engineering and co-reactant selecting combined strategy for further ECL evolution.

In the present research, ZnS/WO 3 composites were prepared by coprecipitation method to construct the Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst with high efficiency electron separation for the photocatalytic reduction of U(VI). Compared with WO 3 and ZnS, the visible light absorption, photoreduction ability and photocatalytic activity of ZnS/WO 3 composites were improved. The ZnS/WO 3 composites show higher photoreduction U(VI) performance under visible light irradiation with the maximum extraction capacity of U(VI) at 1.52 g g −1 . The ZnS/WO 3 composites exhibit high uranium reduction ability under natural light with removal efficiency reaching 93.4 %. In-situ monitoring experiments and DFT calculations were designed to explore the mechanism and pathway of photoelectron transfer in the reduction process from U(VI) to U(IV). The results show that ZnS/WO 3 has an internal electric field to form a Z-scheme electron transfer , and uranium reduction is a dual-electron transfer pathway. In addition, the band gap regulation mechanism of binary composite semiconductor materials is deeply discussed.

All commercial chemiluminescence (CL) assays are conducted with either glow or flash CL of eye-visible waveband from chemical luminophores. Herein, glow and flash, as well as waveband adjustable CL from the same nanoparticle luminophore of thiol-capped CuInS2@ZnS nanocrystals (CIS@ZnS-Thiol), are proposed via extensively exploiting the differed redox nature of CL triggering reagents. Taking thiosalicylic acid (TSA) as the model thiol-capping agent, the electron-injection-initiated charge transfer between CIS@ZnS-TSA and reductant can bring out efficient glow CL while the hole-injection-initiated charge transfer between CIS@ZnS-TSA and oxidant can give off obvious flash CL under optimum conditions. The maximum emission wavelength for CL of CIS@ZnS-TSA is adjustable from 730 nm to 823 nm via employing different triggering agents. Promisingly, the coexistent reductant of N2H4·H2O and oxidant of H2O2 can be employed as dual triggering reagents to trigger eye-visible and highly efficient flash CL from CIS@ZnS-TSA. The maximum emission intensity for flash CL of CIS@ZnS-TSA/N2H4–H2O2 is 101-fold greater than the glow CL of CIS@ZnS-TSA/N2H4 and 22-fold greater than the flash CL of CIS@ZnS-TSA/H2O2, respectively. The flash CL from CIS@ZnS-TSA/N2H4–H2O2 is qualified for highly sensitive and selective CL immunoassay in a commercialized typical procedure with the entire operating process manually terminated within 35 min.

Rice hull biochar modified by ZnS nanocrystals (RBZ) was developed as an efficient absorbent for the removal of Cu(II) in aqueous solution. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied for modeling and optimizing the performance of RBZ. The maximum adsorption capacity of RBZ toward Cu(II) through the Langmuir model fitting was 248.98 mg g−1, which was four times larger than that of rice hull biochar (RB). The adsorption kinetics of Cu(II) and XPS analysis revealed that the chemisorption process played the leading role when using RBZ. Through competition ions study, Pb(II), Cd(II), or Ca(II) can slightly reduce the adsorption of Cu(II). According to the Box Behnken design method, the analysis of variance results showed that the pH and adsorbent dosage had significant effects on the predicted responses of adsorption capacity and removal efficiency. When using the optimum conditions, pH 6, temperature 27 °C, and dosage 0.20 mg mL−1 for removing Cu(II) in solution, the maximum adsorption capacity and relatively higher removal efficiency could be obtained through the 3D response surface plots. The results demonstrated that RSM is feasible to achieve optimal conditions for adsorption capacity and removal efficiency simultaneously toward heavy metals from aqueous medium, and the interaction between them when using the biochar/ZnS composite.

Based on the exchange of the DNA duplex-quadruplex, a multifunctional Pb(II) ion probe was fabricated, in which Pb(II) ion-driven DNA duplexes act as a bridge to link CdSe/ZnS-luminol and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles . As Pb(II) ion owns a strong binding capacity for G-quadruplex (G4), it can unwind the DNA duplex and release its complementary strand. In this strategy, three detection modes, chemiluminescence (CL), fluorescence (FL) assay and colorimetric assay (CA), can be realized via DNA duplex bridged CdSe/ZnS and Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposites . Amongst, FL assay shows the best detection performance, and it exhibits a linear range of 10 nM to 10 µM, as well as the limit of detection (LOD) with 1.63 nM (n = 3, ± 3.5%). In the selective analysis, Pb(II) ion can be specifically detected in the nine different interfering metal ions . Besides, the magnetic probe requires only one “mixing and separation” operation and greatly improves the detection efficiency. The three assays can be combined as one method to achieve a simple and rapid feature. Such a three-in-one analytical platform, therefore, can serve as a powerful tool for selective, accurate and sensitive detection of Pb(II) ion.

The fabrication of flexible and high-output triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) based on low-cost inorganic functional materials has been receiving increasing attention. In this study, sub-10 nm ZnS/ZnO nanoflakes (ZnSO NFs) were successfully synthesized using a facile method and subsequently combined with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a triboelectric layer material for the flexible TENGs (FTENGs). The prepared PDMS/ZnSO NFs-based FTENGs presented a remarkable output power density (~2.95 mW cm −2 ) and excellent flexibility (the output power density retained ~82% of its initial value after 2000 bending cycles). Moreover, when a 2 × 2 cm 2 PDMS/ZnSO NFs-based FTENG was subjected to a force applied by a human fist, it powered 70 LEDs, which confirms that the ultra-thin ZnSO NFs we developed are promising candidates for high-output FTENGs.

Hydrogen evolution from water using solar energy is regarded as a most promising process, thus, exploring efficient photocatalysts for water splitting is highly desirable. To avoid the rapid recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes in CdZnS semiconductors, ZnxCd1−xS/ZnS composites were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method and then annealed at 400 °C for 60 min under argon flow. ZnxCd1−xS/ZnS composites are composed of ZnS nanosheets decorated with ZnxCd1−xS nanorods, and TEM and UV-vis absorption spectra confirm the formation of the heterostructure between ZnxCd1−xS nanorods and ZnS nanosheets. Because of the well-matched band alignment, stronger optical absorption and larger carrier density, Zn0.2Cd0.8S/ZnS has the highest hydrogen production, with a photocatalytic hydrogen production rate up to 16.7 mmol g−1 h−1 under visible light irradiation. Moreover, the photocatalyst also exhibits high stability and good reusability for hydrogen production reaction. The facile and efficient approach for ZnS based heterostructures could be extended to other metal compound materials.

As a representative of III–V semiconductor materials, InP/ZnS quantum dots are regarded as the star material in the field of light-emitting devices due to their low toxicity and suitable luminescence range. However, there are still some major problems in the preparation process of InP/ZnS QDs, such as phosphine precursors are expensive and difficult to preserve, the nucleation time of short wavelength InP/ZnS QDs is too short and the size distribution is too large. In this paper, we'll replace the traditional tris(trimethylsilyl)phosphine with tris(diethylamino)phosphine as a cheaper phosphine precursor and propose a novel and convenient method for adjusting the luminescence wavelength of InP/ZnS QDs. Different from the traditional method to adjust the emission wavelength by changing the nucleation time, the emission wavelength of InP/ZnS QDs was regulated by changing the number of initially formed cores. Zeolites provide a nucleation site for the InP cores. InP/ZnS QDs that emit between 522 nm and 589 nm were obtained. Moreover, the obtained InP/ZnS QDs have good monochromaticity, and the minimum half-width (half-full width) is up to 48 nm. This method provides a new way to adjust the size of quantum dots with good performance.

A facile synthetic route, by using rhombic dodecahedral zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as the structure template, is devoted to fabricating the ZnS/ZnIn2S4 hybrid heterojunction; the compact heterostructure was produced by combining the sulfurization of ZIF-8 and the in situ precipitation of ZnIn2S4 in one pot. The resulting ZnS nanoparticles of about 100 nm were uniformly dispersed in the folds of flower-like ZnIn2S4, whose structure is beneficial for charge transfer at the heterointerface. The additional quantities of ZIF-8 are varied to find an optimum ratio of the two components to obtain the best photocatalytic activity. In the photocatalytic hydrogen generation irradiated by simulated solar light, all the ZnS/ZnIn2S4 hybrid photocatalysts displayed improved hydrogen production rates compared to single ZnS or ZnIn2S4, and the best hydrogen production rate of 453.4 μmol h−1 g−1 is obtained by ZnS/ZIS-20, whose value is approximately 4 times higher than that of single ZnIn2S4. The electrochemical properties of the ZnS/ZnIn2S4 hybrid photocatalysts were measured to explore the charge transfer mode at the interface, and the band structure and enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen generation mechanism have been proposed. The excellent recycling properties of hydrogen production indicated the prospective applications of this kind of ZIF-derived metal sulfide in photocatalytic reactions.
