Fabrication of phosphorus-free flame-retardant regenerated cellulose fibers via amidoximation and catechol functionalization of waste recycled polyacrylonitrile

Yiting Tong,Yansong Liu,Dingding Zhang,Zenan Chi,Xiao Liang,Caiyun Zhang,Zengge Guo,Zhaohui Jiang

The development of flame retardant technologies are essential for regenerated cellulose fibers, while the resource recycling of waste fibers remains a challenging issue. Herein, a novel and sustainable strategy was proposed to simultaneously realize Lyocell fiber flame-retardant modification and waste polyacrylonitrile (PAN) resource reuse. Two phosphorus-free flame retardants (A-PAN and A-PAN-Y) were successfully synthesized from recycled waste PAN filaments through hydrolysis, amidoximation and Schiff base reaction, and then applied for the modification of Lyocell fibers. Under similar weight gain rate, the prepared Lyocell@A-PAN (10.8 wt%) and Lyocell@A-PAN-Y (11.3 wt%) presented outstanding fire resistance with limiting oxygen index values (LOI) up to 32.3 % and 34.7 %, respectively. In comparison with pristine Lyocell fiber, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) was reduced by 38.9 % and 45 %, while the total heat release (THR) decreased by 55.8 % and 60 %, respectively. No obvious flame spread was observed during vertical burning tests. Mechanism analysis confirmed a typical gas-condensed phase synergistic flame-retardant effect: amidoxime groups released inert nitrogen-containing gases to dilute combustible volatiles, and the introduced catechol structure further promoted the formation of highly graphitized compact char layer. Distinct from common single modified systems, this work realized the high-value recycling of waste PAN fibers and phosphorus free flame retardation of Lyocell fibers, providing a feasible and sustainable strategy for the circular recycling of PAN waste and high-performance functional cellulose materials.

Cyano amidoximation and catechol functionalization of waste polyacrylonitrile for fabricating flame retardant, thermal insulation and smoke suppression aerogels

Yansong Liu,Yiting Tong,Dingding Zhang,Zenan Chi,Xiao Liang,Renhai Zhao,Zengge Guo,Zhaohui Jiang,Yuanlin Ren

Waste PAN was recycled into flame retardant aerogels to realize utilization. • The aerogels were free of flame retardant elements such as P, Cl and Br. • The aerogels exhibited ignition resistance and thermal insulation properties. • Amidoxime self-crosslinking flame retardant mechanism was proposed. To achieve the reuse of polymer material waste, polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based flame-retardant aerogels (PAN@HA-aer, PAN@HA@PCA-aer) were prepared using waste PAN fiber as raw materials. The cyano groups of PAN were modified via amidoximation with hydroxylamine hydrochloride and functionalized by 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde. The test results indicated that the self-crosslinking effect of amidoxime groups, the aromatic carbonization promotion of catechol, combined with the physical barrier effect of the porous skeleton, synergistically improved the flame retardancy and thermal insulation performance of PAN@HA-aer and PAN@HA@PCA-aer. Combustion tests showed that compared with PAN-aer, the total heat release (THR), peak heat release rate (PHRR), smoke production rate (SPR), and the generation of toxic gas HCN of PAN@HA-aer and PAN@HA@PCA-aer were all significantly reduced. Moreover, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) was increased to over 46%, demonstrating excellent flame-retardant and smoke-suppressant properties. This work not only developed eco-friendly flame-retardant porous materials, but also provided a promising strategy for high-value recycling and resource utilization of waste PAN fiber. Mussel-inspired copper-catechol coordination network enabled fire-retardant polylactide composites with excellent electromagnetic shielding and antibacterial properties

Yadong Wang,Zongmin Zhu,Jingjing Gao,Guoping Zhu,Yu Huang,Zhennan Wang,Chuan Liu,Pingan Song

The development of advanced polylactide (PLA) composites that integrated intrinsic flame retardancy, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, and antibacterial functionality within a single material system remained a significant challenge. Inspired by the robust metal‒phenolic coordination chemistry of mussel byssus threads, this study designs a bio-inspired copper‒catechol Schiff-base complex ( Cu@CSP ) and synergistically combined it with expandable graphite (EG) to fabricate multifunctional PLA composites. The resulting PLA- Cu@CSP +EG composite achieved a UL-94 V-0 rating with a high limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 31.6%, while completely suppressing melt dripping. Cone calorimetry revealed a 69.6% reduction in peak heat release rate (pHRR), a 40.3% decrease in total heat release (THR), and a 76.6% suppression in CO 2 production. These exceptional fire-safety metrics were attributed to a condensed-phase synergistic mechanism in which Cu@CSP catalytically promoted char formation and graphitization, while EG acted as an expanding scaffold, leading to the formation of a voluminous, thermally insulating intumescent char. Remarkably, the blends also exhibited efficient EMI shielding (>20 dB) through a reflection-absorption dual mechanism and potent broad-spectrum antibacterial activity (>99% inhibition against both S. aureus and Escherichia coli ), arising from the combined action of chitosan, copper ions, and Schiff-base structures. This work presented a rational biomimetic strategy for creating multifunctional sustainable polymers with integrated fire safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and antimicrobial properties for next-generation electronics, transportation, and healthcare applications.

A multifunctional zwitterionic–catechol polymer with dynamic Fe3+ coordination for self-healing and chloride-resistant marine anticorrosion coatings

Phuoc-Cuong Le,Dinh Nhi Bui,Xuan Kien Bui,Dinh Ngo Vu,Van Chau Dinh,Thi Thao Minh,Tan Nhat,Ken Kawamoto

A multifunctional zwitterionic–catechol polymer with dynamic Fe 3+ coordination is developed. • The coating achieves ultrahigh impedance (∼10 9  Ω·cm 2 ) and low corrosion current (∼10 −9 A·cm −2 ). • Rapid intrinsic self-healing enables ∼90% recovery at 24 h and ∼95% at 48 h. • Chloride diffusion is strongly suppressed (D ≈ 1.8 × 10 −15  m 2 ·s −1 ) with delayed penetration. • Synergistic mechanism integrates hydration layer, coordination bonding, and dynamic repair. The long-term degradation of metallic structures in marine environments is mainly driven by chloride-induced corrosion and mechanical damage, which severely limits the durability of conventional polymer coatings. Herein, we report a multifunctional zwitterionic-catechol polymer coating (DZCP-Fe) that integrates hydration-mediated ion regulation, catechol interfacial adhesion, fluorinated barrier contribution, and dynamic Fe 3+ -catechol coordination. The coating exhibits a dense morphology, enhanced hydrophobicity, and strong adhesion. Electrochemical measurements show an impedance modulus up to ∼10 9  Ω·cm 2 and a reduced corrosion current density in the 10 −8 –10 −9 A·cm −2 range. After scratching, DZCP-Fe achieves ∼90% crack closure within 24 h and ∼95% after 48 h, accompanied by substantial electrochemical recovery. Chloride-transport analysis shows a strongly suppressed effective diffusion coefficient (∼1.8 × 10 −15  m 2 ·s −1 ) and delayed ion penetration. These results demonstrate that the integrated hydration–adhesion–coordination strategy provides a robust route toward intrinsic self-healing and chloride-resistant marine anticorrosion coatings. Silver–Catechol Dynamic Redox Chemistry Provides Hydrogel Dressings with Sustained Antioxidant and Antibacterial Activity for Chronic Wound Care

Xinxin Huang,Jiajie Wang,Haiqi Wang,Rui Ma,Zihuan Ling,Kang Chen,Zhicheng Xu,Jianan Ren,Xiuwen Wu,Qiuhong Zhang,Xudong Jia

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduction and bacterial infection are prevalent challenges in diabetic wound management. Hence, hydrogel dressings with antioxidant and antibacterial (A&A) activity hold great promise for improving diabetic wound healing. However, the lack of sustained A&A activity of current hydrogel dressings necessitates frequent dressing replacements. This not only disrupts the delicate healing process but also triggers dressing-associated costs, complications, and environmental issues. Herein, a long-acting hydrogel dressing, NPs-PSH, that maintains A&A activity for over 8 days is presented. By engineering silver-deposited cuttlefish ink nanoparticles (AgCINPs) as nanoredox reactors, a silver–catechol dynamic redox chemistry is established. It combines catechol–quinone redox cycling and the catechol–Ag+ redox reaction synergistically, realizing the enduring regeneration of antioxidant catechol groups and the controlled release of antibacterial Ag+. By incorporating AgCINPs, NPs-PSH can continuously scavenge ROS and eradicate bacteria. Moreover, NPs-PSH exhibits favorable bioadhesion (14.21 kPa), biocompatibility, conductivity (0.42 S m–1), and toughness (506.15 kJ m–3). In a diabetic rat model, NPs-PSH demonstrates enhanced wound-healing efficacy by promoting epithelialization, reducing inflammation, and enhancing vascular regeneration, without frequent dressing changes (wear time up to 7 days). This study may provide a paradigm for the development of long-acting therapeutic strategies and undisturbed wound healing.

Highly adhesive conductive hydrogels fabricated by catechol lignin/liquid metal-initiated polymerization of acrylic acid for strain sensors

Dongping Zhao,Jing Luo,Kaili Fang,Caoxing Huang,Xin Zhou,Kankan Jiang

Conductive hydrogels have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation flexible electronics owing to their unique combination of electrical conductivity and mechanical compliance. However, the development of an eco-friendly and efficient polymerization strategy to simultaneously achieve robust adhesion and superior functionality remains a challenge. In the work, catechol lignin (DAL)/liquid metal (LM) were utilized as initiators for the polymerization of acrylic monomers (PAA), resulting in the preparation of conductive hydrogels (PAA-DAL-LM). The engineered DAL component serves dual functions of establishing an interfacial stabilization layer for LM nanoparticles while participating in radical generation for polymerization initiation, and this synthesis protocol eliminates conventional toxic initiators through LM-mediated radical generation mechanisms. The resultant PAA-DAL-1.6 %LM hydrogel demonstrated remarkable performance characteristics, including exceptional compressive strength (688.5 KPa), good self-healing properties, and high electrical conductivity (0.24 S/m). Structural modification of alkali lignin through catechol incorporation significantly improved both the water solubility and interfacial adhesion strength (16.23 KPa). Systematic characterization revealed stable strain-responsive electrical behavior with high strain sensing accuracy as well as stable electrical output. These multifunctional hydrogels not only hold significant potential for advancing flexible sensor technologies but also pave the way for sustainable valorization of lignin biopolymers in advanced material applications.

Preparation and application of zwitterionic polymer wellbore stabilizer with catechol group for drilling in natural gas hydrate reservoir

Xingxing Wang,Guancheng Jiang,Guoshuai Wang,Haozhe Chen,Lili Yang,Yinbo He,Tengfei Dong

A novel approach to enhance wellbore stability was put forth based on the wellbore rock properties and instability mechanism of the hydrate reservoir given the issue of wellbore instability when using water-based drilling fluid in drilling operations in weakly cemented muddy fine silt reservoirs of natural gas hydrates in the South China Sea. Three main strategies were used to increase the stability of reservoirs: enhancing the underwater connection between sandstone particles and clay minerals, preventing clay hydration from spreading and expanding, and strengthening the stability of hydration skeleton structure. An appropriate drilling fluid system was built with soil phase containing wellbore stabilizer. Sulfonic acid groups and electrostatic interaction were introduced based on the characteristics of underwater adhesion of mussels. Through the process of free radical polymerization, a zwitterionic polymer containing catechol groups named DAAT was prepared for application in natural gas hydrate reservoir drilling. DAAT is composed of tannic acid (TA), dimethyl diallyl chloride ammonium chloride (DMDAAC), 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) and acrylamide (AM). Experimental results from mechanical property testing reveal an adhesion force of up to 4206 nN between SiO 2 and 5 wt% DAAT, demonstrating its ability to bind quartz sand particles effectively. The compressive strength and cohesion of the cores treated with DAAT increased by 58.33wt% and 53.26wt%, respectively, at -10°C, compared with pure ice particle cores. This demonstrates DAAT can significantly enhance the compressive strength and cohesion of the core. Furthermore, the adhesion force between DAAT and hydrate particles reaches up to 344.4 mN/m, significantly improving the structural stability between hydrate particles. It demonstrates excellent adhesive properties to hydrate particles. In addition to adsorbing clay minerals, rocks, and hydrate particles, DAAT also forms hydrogen bonds with argillaceous fine silt particles with its low temperature cohesiveness characteristic. As a result, it improves the cohesion between core particles, and enhances the adhesion between hydrates and rocks, thereby enhancing the stability of hydrate reservoirs. In summary, DAAT is characterized by a simple preparation process, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness. It is an innovative and practical material for enhancing wellbore stability in water-based drilling fluid for natural gas hydrate exploration in the South China Sea.

Cu Single Atoms Embedded in N-Doped Hollow Carbon Spheres for Simultaneous Electrochemical Detection of Hydroquinone and Catechol

Xiangwei Yuan,Yao Jin,Junchun Guo,Qain Wang,Li Xu,Yongjiao Song,Xiaoli Xiong

N-doped hollow carbon spheres loaded with Cu single atoms (Cu SAs/N-CSs) were prepared via an in situ hard-template method. As an electrode catalyst, the Cu SAs/N-CSs electrochemical-sensing properties to hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and the linear detection ranges of HQ and CC were 1–324 and 1–123 μM, respectively; the detection limits are 0.33 and 0.17 μM, respectively. The experimental and DFT calculation results show that Cu SAs/N-CSs have stronger adsorption strength and more effective affinity for CC and HQ due to the synergistic effect of dispersed Cu SAs and N-CSs, thus improving the electrocatalytic and sensing properties of CC and HQ. Furthermore, the prepared electrode has been successfully applied to the simultaneous determination of HQ and CC in practical water samples with satisfactory results.

Iron-Based Oxides Anchored on the Catechol/Silane-Coated Polypropylene Nonwoven Fabrics for Effective Removal of Anionic Dyes

Jing Li,Yining Sun,Xiaodong Yang,Zhuan Fu,Hui Sun,Bin Yu

The dopamine modification strategy has received extensive attention in water treatment due to its simple and gentle preparation process, excellent adhesion, and good secondary reactivity. Further research has found that compounds containing the catechol groups can react with the amino-containing silane coupling agents under mild conditions to form dopamine-like hydrophilic coatings on the surface of hydrophobic membranes or fibers. This paper used cheap polypropylene melt-blown nonwovens as the substrate to prepare a large-capacity dye adsorbent PP-(CK-Fe). Specifically, catechol (CA) and (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (KH550) were used to form a codeposited coating on the substrate. Then, we used the secondary reactivity of the coating to grow iron-based oxides in situ. The adsorbent had good adsorption performance on anionic dyes at the initial pH of the dye solution, including Orange II (380 mg/g), methyl orange (268 mg/g), Congo red (294 mg/g), and carmine (263 mg/g). However, it had almost no adsorption effect on cationic dyes at the initial pH, including methylene blue and Rhodamine B. We chose Orange II to explore the possible adsorption mechanism. The results confirmed that the adsorbent had good adsorption performance at pH 3–11. The adsorption process tended to be monolayer chemical adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax) of Orange II was 515.46 mg/g under optimal conditions. This study also confirmed that the codeposition coating constructed with polyphenol and amino-containing silane coupling agents had a secondary reactivity similar to the dopamine coating.

Highly selective colorimetric determination of catechol based on the aggregation-induced oxidase–mimic activity decrease of δ-MnO2

Pengyu Xiao,Yang Liu,Wenjing Zong,Jin Wang,Minghuo Wu,Jingjing Zhan,Xianliang Yi,Lifen Liu,Hao Zhou

Multiple enzyme-like activities of manganese oxides (MnO2) have been reported and applied in catalysis, biosensors, and cancer therapy. Here, we report that catechol can be determined colorimetrically based on the 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidase-like activity of δ-MnO2. The detection was based on pre-incubation of catechol containing water samples with δ-MnO2, and then the residual TMB oxidase-like activity of reacted δ-MnO2 was linearly dependent on the catechol concentration in the range of 0.5 to 10 μM. This determination method was stable at pH 3.73–6.00 and was not affected by ion strength up to 200 μM. Common co-solutes in water bodies (50 μM) have negligible effects and excellent selectivity of catechol among various phenolic compounds (15 μM) was facilitated. Both reduction and aggregation of δ-MnO2 were observed during the incubation process with catechol, and aggregation-induced TMB oxidase–mimic activity decrease was the main factor for this colorimetric determination.

Interfacial Study of Steel Joints Prepared with a Catechol-Modified Epoxy Adhesive with Enhanced Bonding Performance and Durability

Gaoming Li,Yeping Wu,Ping Zhang,Xiuli Zhao,Sixun Zheng,Yinyu Zhang

Bonding is widely used in aircraft and vehicles due to its light weight and simple process, but its strength decreases sharply in hot and humid environments. Anodization treatment, used for enhancing aging performance, is environmentally harmful and unsuitable for steel. In this study, a catechol-modified epoxy adhesive (CMEA) was prepared on a hectogram scale. Comparative analysis with phenol-modified epoxy adhesive (PMEA) and pristine epoxy adhesive (EA) revealed that the underwater bonding of CMEA (13.0 MPa) on stainless steel (SS) significantly outperformed the two control groups. Moreover, after 32 days of hydrothermal aging at 50 °C, CMEA preserved 73.9% of its initial bonding strength, while PMEA and EA retained 59.8 and 11.4%, respectively. Furthermore, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) etching at different times to analyze the interface between adhesives and the SS substrate indicated a marked increase in the O–H/O2– value at the interface between CMEA and the SS substrate compared to the two control groups. The above results demonstrated that the catechol-modified adhesive enhanced the bonding and aging properties of the adhesive, possibly due to the formation of a higher density of hydroxyl groups at the interface between the adhesive and the SS substrate. These findings contribute to the understanding of the enhancement mechanism of catechol in improving the bonding and aging properties of adhesives and suggest a feasible direction for designing adhesives with high bonding strength and high durability.

Catechol modified quaternized chitosan enhanced wet adhesive and antibacterial properties of injectable thermo-sensitive hydrogel for wound healing

Zhiqiang Zheng,Shaoquan Bian,Zhiqiang Li,Zhiyang Zhang,Yuan Liu,Xinyun Zhai,Haobo Pan,Xiaoli Zhao

Wound dressings based on injectable thermo-sensitive hydrogel possess several advantages over preformed conventional dressings such as rapid reversible sol-gel transition behavior and the capacity of filling the irregular wound defect. Nevertheless, its clinical application is hindered by the weak tissue adhesiveness. Therefore, in this study, the catechol modified quaternized chitosan (QCS-C) was fabricated and incorporated into poly(d,l-lactide)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(d,l-lactide) (PLEL) hydrogel to develop an injectable hydrogel with the properties of thermo-sensitive, antibacterial and tissue adhesive . QCS-C could lower the LCST of hydrogel for easy gelation at physiological temperature, and significantly enhanced the tissue adhesion. For wound generation, nano-scaled bioactive glass (nBG:80 SiO 2 , 16 CaO and 4 P 2 O 5 ; mol%) was loaded into hydrogel to promote angiogenesis. The mice partial laceration experiment showed that PLEL-nBG-QCS-C hydrogel could effectively seal the ruptured skin and significantly accelerate wound healing. Thus, our findings established a new type of clinical treatment technology for complicated wounds.
