Background Pesticide formulations based on nanotechnology can effectively improve the efficiency of pesticide utilization and reduce pesticide residues in the environment. In this study, mesoporous silica nanoparticles containing disulfide bonds were synthesized by the sol–gel method, carboxylated and adsorbed with lufenuron, and grafted with cellulose to obtain a lufenuron-loaded nano-controlled release formulation (Luf@MSNs-ss-cellulose). Results The structure and properties of Luf@MSNs-ss-cellulose were characterized. The results showed that Luf@MSNs-ss-cellulose exhibits a regular spherical shape with 12.41% pesticide loading. The highest cumulative release rate (73.46%) of this pesticide-loaded nanoparticle was observed at 7 days in the environment of glutathione and cellulase, which shows redox-enzyme dual-responsive performance. As a result of cellulose grafting, Luf@MSNs-ss-cellulose had a small contact angle and high adhesion work on corn leaves, indicating good wetting and adhesion properties. After 14 days of spraying with 20 mg L −1 formulations in the long-term control efficacy experiment, the mortality of Luf@MSNs-ss-cellulose against Ostrinia furnacalis larvae (56.67%) was significantly higher than that of commercial Luf@EW (36.67%). Luf@MSNs-ss-cellulose is safer for earthworms and L02 cells. Conclusion The nano-controlled release formulation obtained in this study achieved intelligent pesticide delivery in time and space under the environmental stimulation of glutathione and cellulase, providing an effective method for the development of novel pesticide delivery systems. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Conventional potassium chloride granules have inefficient applications in agricultural production due to particle irregularity and low fluidity. The application of controlled-release potassium chloride could increase the potassium-use efficiency and alleviate the shortage of potassium ore resources. In this study, a well-rounded potassium chloride fertilizer core was prepared, using the graft modification of polyurea to enhance the coating rate and release performance. The adhesive and tensile characteristics of the modified polyurea binder, as well as the granule properties of modified polyurea binder potassium chloride, were studied to determine the ideal lignin-grafted ratio. The effect of the modified polyurea binder with potassium chloride on the properties of coated fertilizer was investigated. The findings, shown by radar maps of the binder’s properties, demonstrated that the ideal mass ratio of the modified lignin polyurea binder to urea is 1:2. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy results demonstrated that the amino functional groups of lignin were enhanced, improving the product’s interfacial compatibility with the polyurea matrix. Compared to humic acid (HA; 12%) and bentonite (Ben; 30%) treatments, the granule intensity of the 9.9%—1:2 treatment considerably increased by 139.10% and 38.86%, respectively, while the static angle of the granules reduced by 16.67% and 3.81%. The 28-day cumulative release rate of the modified polyurea (9.9%—2:1) with a 5% coating thickness was the lowest (28%), 42% lower than that of the lowest conventional treatment. In summary, the creation of a bio-lignin polyurea binder under the optimum conditions reduced the need for petrochemical-based materials, allowed the preparation of fertilizer with granules of increased fluidity, and enabled the successful coating of a high-salt potassium fertilizer, offering a novel technique for the high-value application of potash fertilizer coating. Keywords:lignin;modified polyurea;binder;potassium chloride;controlled-release fertilizer

Sodium alginate hydrogel has been widely used in the field of controlled-release. In this paper, in order to prevent the negative effect of fast degradation and explosive release of pure sodium alginate hydrogel in the drug delivery process, we developed a novel alginate hydrogel supported by hollow silica microsphere for drug delivery. Briefly, the drugs were fused with sodium alginate and the hollow silica microspheres followed by ion crosslinking to form a composite hydrogel microsphere with a core–shell structure (SA@SiO 2 ). The structure and morphology of the composite hydrogel were characterized by Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) along with fluorescence microscope. On this basis, using three different types of organic compounds (rhodamine B, Indocyanine green and salicylic acid) as model molecules, the controlled-release performance of the SA@SiO 2 microspheres were investigated in detail. The research results show that the drug delivery system has broad-spectrum controlled-release performance for different types of molecules, and the controlled-release time can exceed 40 h. At the same time, the pH- responsive property of the sodium alginate hydrogel endows the delivery system with a certain targeting function. This study provides a new strategy for constructing an efficient targeted drug controlled-release system.

An intelligent responsive pesticide delivery system has been applied in agriculture to improve the utilization rate of pesticides. When plants are affected by fungi, a large number of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced rapidly on the wound surface. Based on this, a ROS responsive star polymer micellar slow-release system was constructed to load carbendazim (MBC) and improve its bioavailability. The star polymer was synthesized by using 3-mercaptopropionic acid, acetone, pentaerythritol (PER), ε-caprolactone (ε-CL), and methoxypolyethylene glycols (mPEG5000, Mw = 5000) and named PER-PCL-TK-mPEG5000. By loading MBC, the drug loading micelle MBC-loaded PER-PCL-TK-mPEG5000 was obtained. The cumulative release amount of MBC-loaded PER-PCL-TK-mPEG5000 containing H2O2 is 1.64 times of that without H2O2 after 120 h release. The inhibitory rate of MBC-loaded PER-PCL-TK-mPEG5000 containing H2O2 against Rhizoctonia solani (R. solani) was 91.6%. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of PER-PCL-TK-mPEG5000 is 4.37 mg/L, and the result showed that PER-PCL-TK-mPEG5000 and MBC-loaded PER-PCL-TK-mPEG5000 have good stability at 4 °C for 14 d. This study proved that the strategy of designing pesticide vectors according to the target environment can be widely used to protect crops, improve pesticide utilization rate, and protect the environment.

A composite separable microneedles (MNs) system consisting of silk fibroin (SF) needle tips and hyaluronic acid (HA) base is developed for transdermal delivery of salmon calcitonin (sCT) for therapy of osteoporosis. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is used to modulate the conformation structure of SF to achieve controllable sustained release of sCT. The prepared MNs can effectively penetrate the skin stratum corneum. After application to the skin, the HA base is dissolved within 2 min, allowing these SF drug depots to be implanted into the skin for controllable sustained release of sCT. The release kinetics of sCT can be controlled by regulating the conformation of SF with PEG and the interaction between sCT peptide and SF proteins. Compared with traditional needle injection, delivery of sCT using optimized HA-PEG/SF MNs shows better trabecular bone repair for ovariectomized-induced osteoporosis in mice. The proposed MNs system provides a new noninjection strategy for therapy of osteoporosis.

Multilayer beads made from biomacromolecules are useful for encapsulating, protecting, and delivering active ingredients such as drugs, dyes, and proteins. However, their encapsulated cargos are allowed to diffuse slowly out into the surrounding solvent during storage. This study describes a “smart” multilayer bead that can achieve zero leakage for encapsulated materials during storage and controlled release after triggered by near-infrared (NIR) light. The innermost layer of the multilayer bead containing Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles is prepared based on the thermal-responsive sol-gel transition of agar, which offers magnetic responsiveness to the bead. The middle layer of the bead embedding gold nanorods (Au NRs) is produced by the ionic crosslinking between alginate and terbium ions. Moreover, encapsulated materials (drugs, dyes, and agrochemicals) are loaded in the middle layer. The outermost layer of the bead, a paraffin-wax shell, is formed at 75 ℃ through the phase transition of paraffin wax . Because of the protection of the paraffin-wax shell, the encapsulated materials present zero leakage when the multilayer bead is placed in aqueous solutions for at least six weeks. Under the irradiation of 808 nm NIR light for 1 min, the multilayer bead is heated up to 50 ℃ by the photothermal effect of Au NRs in the middle layer, which triggers the melting of the paraffin-wax shell. Then, the controlled release of the encapsulated materials can be achieved by the rest of the bead. Furthermore, the bead can be recycled after the release due to its magnetic responsiveness. Consequently, the multilayer bead is a novel, green and economical candidate for diverse applications, especially for the encapsulation and controlled release of hydrophilic materials in bio-related applications.

A polysaccharides-based delivery system was designed to encapsulate and control the release of peanut peptide (PP). The PP-loaded polyelectrolyte complex (TMC-PP-SA) was fabricated based on the electrostatic self-assembly between n-trimethy chitosan (TMC) and sodium alginate (SA). The complex exhibited uniform spherical morphology, satisfactory stability and high encapsulation efficiency. In vitro release behavior indicated that TMC-PP-SA polyelectrolyte complex could inhibit the release of PP at simulated gastric medium and enhance the release of PP at simulated intestinal medium. Moreover, the antioxidant activity of PP after encapsulation was significantly improved compared with that of directly digested PP. Ex vivo intestinal permeation study confirmed that about 41.76 ± 1.43% PP in TMC-PP-SA could be absorbed in the intestinal. The cytotoxicity measurement indicated that the fabricated TMC-PP-SA polyelectrolyte complex was biocompatible and nontoxic. Therefore, these results indicated that the polysaccharides-based delivery system had great potential in protecting active peptides from degradation and facilitating their absorption.

The substantial progress made in extrinsic self-healing has been limited to microcapsules containing heat-active polymerizable monomers. Fabrication of self-healing microvascular and nanoparticle systems that are responsive to light is, therefore, an important task. In this study, using azobenzene-grafted mesoporous SBA-15 (Azo-SBA) as the functional nanocontainer to adsorb a photoactive repair agent (glycidyl methacrylate, GMA)(GMA@Azo-SBA), a facile yet feasible strategy is demonstrated to prepare photoresponsive self-healing epoxy composites. The resulting composite integrates the controllable fixation and release of the repair agent driven by the isomerization of azobenzene and photo-induced self-healing properties under UV irradiation. The hydrogenated epoxy resin composite, incorporated with isophorone diamine (IPDA) as the curing agent and 2 wt.% GMA@Azo-SBA and 4 wt.% photoinitiator, exhibits desirable self-healing properties; the microcracks of the composite can be completely repaired after self-healing for 15 min. In addition, the pyrene-modified GMA monomer with fluorescence characteristics as a fluorescent probe is further employed to successfully visualize the fixation and release process of the repair agent under UV irradiation.

The usage of chemical admixtures, such as starch-based materials, is a common approach to addressing the thermal cracking problem of cementitious materials. Capsule-based controlled release technique enables the adjustable action time of loaded chemical admixture and thus reveals the potential on inhibiting the exothermic process of cement hydration . Three types of silica-based nanocapsules loaded with 53–63% sucrose retarder are firstly prepared by interfacial polymerization in water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion. The release characteristics of three types of nanocapsules are precisely tuned by varied preparation conditions. The effects of nanocapsules on the exothermic process of cement hydration have been investigated through calorimetry measurements. All prepared nanocapsules not only delay the appearance of the main hydration peak as the retardation effect but also reduce the maximum heat flow of the main hydration peak, to some extent, as the depression effect. The depression and retardation effects are improved with the increased dosage and slower release rate of added nanocapsules. The relationship between the two effects and the action time of loaded sucrose suggests the importance of persistently inhibiting the cement hydration over the entire accelerating and decelerating processes, which can be estimated by the time window between the action of sucrose (50% release time) and occurrence of main hydration peak.

Intrinsically charged covalent organic frameworks (COFs) afford specific ionic nanochannels for mass transport, and thus become promising platforms to design membranes with unique selectivity. However, internal electrostatic repulsion and large-pore frameworks cause significant barriers that greatly limit membrane performances. Herein, we report a novel strategy to synchronously crystallize and upgrade cationic COF membranes by ion-pairing design. Ion-paired guest molecules are involved in electric-driven interfacial crystallization to offset the charges of the ionic monomers and host frameworks. This host-guest neutralization promotes the crystallization of compact COF membranes. Lateral dimension and charge nature of guest molecules fundamentally affect the ion-pairing efficiency. Tight encapsulation of the large-sized electronegative molecules effectually narrows the molecular sieving channels, yielding a significant elevation in membrane selectivity. The membrane rejection of organic ions with a size larger than 1.2 nm thus can be improved from below 50 % to above 85 % with a water permeance of ∼10 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 . Prominently, our membranes demonstrate efficient recovery and pH-dependent release of bioactive pharmaceuticals, with a release rate that is 12 times higher in an acidic solution compared to a neutral environment. This work provides an ion-pairing strategy to regulate COF membranes for pharmaceutical industries and beyond.

An oral multi-unit delivery system was developed by incorporating the nanoparticle (NP) into the nanofiber mat and its efficiency for intestinal-specific delivery and controlled release of a peptide (insulin) was investigated. Initially, the influence of deacetylation degree (DD) of chitosan and ionic gelation methods on the properties of NPs was studied. High DD (95%) chitosan was attributed to higher encapsulation efficiency and stability when crosslinked with polyanion tripolyphosphate. Subsequently, the multi-unit system was fabricated using a pH-sensitive polymer (sodium alginate) as the coating layer to further encapsulate the NP. Fiber mat with an average diameter of 481 ± 47 nm could significantly decrease the burst release of insulin in acidic condition and release most amount of insulin (>60%) in the simulated intestinal medium. Furthermore, the encapsulated peptide remained in good integrity. This multi-unit carrier provides the better-designed vehicle for intestinal-specific delivery and controlled release of the peptide.

Controlled release formulations (CRFs) of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) with chitosan (CTS) and chitosan-starch (CTS-STA) matrices were prepared in their un-crosslinked and crosslinked forms. Pesticide-matrix interactions were probed by FT-IR, while TGA and SEM provided information on the morphological characteristics of the pesticide-loaded beads. The CRF beads are more hydrophilic at pH 4 than at pH 8 due to increased number and strength of hydrogen bonds at pH 4. Crosslinking reduces the water uptake and expansion capacity of the beads in both acidic and basic media. Swelling of both bead types in water obeys first-order kinetics. Release of 2,4-D from the beads is of the burst type which exhibits zero-order kinetics. Measured n values range from 0.32 to 0.90, indicative of a non-Fickian diffusional release mechanism controlled by both water diffusion into, and relaxation of, the beads. These characteristics predispose the matrix blends as suitable biomaterials for agricultural and environmental sustainability.
